In 3.5, if you have a Fighter that excels in Tripping, he will do that EVERY TIME, and if the opponent is immune to trip (Oozes) or basically impossible to trip (Giants), you are fucked and near useless.
In comparison, in a power system, if the player is not a braindead mongoloid like you, he will have powers that can cover a wide range of situations, and still be useful.

First and foremost; not every player plays a fighter, nor a wizard. Some play in-between classes and are always hungry for their next feat or spell level.
Secondarily, I myself have not suggested fighter doesn't work; I personally believe that fighter is the expert-player class, because it gets few actual class features, requiring system mastery to use. This does not dismiss that it has flaws, however, such as having a very unpredictable nature or being the slave to feat taxes.

I view 4e as "DnD: Tactics". HP bloat, and some monster setups can make the game drag. But overall it's fun for mostly dungeon crawl adventures, or adventures with very little mechanics outside of combat.

Trip is a wasted endeavor against over half the monsters you'll ever face, and certainly any past the first few levels of a campaign.

A gender change potion ranges from 500gp (that's what a spell like that would actually cost) to 2250 (the one that actually exists in the rules).
Even a commoner with a single rank in craft or profession (and absolutely no other bonuses) taking 10 on every roll could afford a gender change potion in roughly 4 years, it gets easier when you do stuff like take skill focus, account for trained class skills and have a decent statline... like three or four times as fast.
