Well first, you fight back your autism, develop an imagination, and give her a well-defined personality, ambitions, allies and enemies.
Occasionally have her struggle against her enemies (either to try to achieve her ambitions or thwart theirs), perhaps dangling her need for assistance as a plot hook. Maybe she's legit or maybe she's more crooked than a Shadowrun Dragon. Depends on how you want to swing it.
The point is, being a princess is merely a meaningless status if the character is just a flat mook. Build a interesting base and being a princess just adds another dimension to something that is already compelling.

People seem to dislike "Save the Princess" quests nowadays because of the feminism, but I say if you want to make her interesting, why not make her so much like an object that you raise the question of is it better to serve a purpose for the greater good or to be a person and work towards the same good to a lesser effect. For example:
The princess has been blessed with the ability to destroy the bbeg, but currently the plan is rough. First the party has to rescue her from the bbeg's pet dragon, but then sacrifice her during the final fight. Thing is, the prophecy says her blood is the key, so you could teach her to fight then let her cut her hand or something and die like a hero.
With this the heroes have time to become invested in her character and her development and can choose how they handle her fate which will make them care.

Okay so you've got two aspects of the whole thing to consider. Firstly, what's the seemingly trivial task and how does it go to hell? Since you're interacting with royalty consider having some potentially become grounds for foreign offense, since you're an agent of the crown sort of. Secondly, how is the king going to find out and how is the party going to escape his explicit notice? It's fine if he knows there's *someone* the princess is hiring, but as long as he can never identify who, or even that it's always the same goons, then the princess is the only one taking the heat, and getting written off because "lol just a child". So then over time your party grows to like this kid, and they feel like they're doing cool secret ops shit. Trivial tasks are unexpectedly hard for me to think of, so I'm mixing in some other Weird Shit You Can't Tell Anyone About.
Some example scenarios:
>The aforementioned doll. Turns out that doll has been supercharged with love, making it a very significant meal for some fey creature that eats love-energy-or-whatever that lurk in the background of society. You really, really don't want to piss them off because they serve some unseen purpose and/or would seriously fuck over everyone if you turn them hostile.Completely transparent ripoff of an unmentionable source, I know.
>The princess' friend is on a trip to another kingdom, with an armed escort. She wants you to guard the escort. Make sure that they absolutely do not notice any hostilities. For whatever reason she believes there will be, and she doesn't want anyone to know about it and possibly cause grounds for war. Maybe she just doesn't want it to be centered on that person, who needs to serve some other purpose.

So if asked what your job is, all they can say are things like "find lost dolls" and "help grannies" or whatever. But your only real exposure to it from NPCs is a kid telling tall stories and saying weird shit.

It was a small mercy to Galegon Alablung and his companions that the market had cleared itself out, a fact that the opportunistic elven pickpocket appreciated greatly.
He peered around the corner of a shopping district building, checking the structural integrity of his chosen cover while keeping his guard up and knife in hand.
"Now, now, we can discuss this-" He didn't finish his sentence as the sign of a fruit stand sailed not six inches from where he moves his face out of the way, bouncing off of the building's corner with a crack.
'Like rational people,' he thought, wincing and clutching at his throat as he heard his faithful mercenary buddy being thrown through a storefront window.
Not thirty feet away from the cowering thief, a dwarven shield-maiden, worn to the goddess of law and war, barely deflected one of the terrible foe's blows.
"This is just getting ridiculous!" Spitting out blood, Sanzing Mili scored a direct hit on the opponent, a seething tower of human flesh and rage. "I know you can't keep this up forever, so just snap out of it already!"
Ignoring the suggestion, the barbarian snatched up an iron bar from a broken clothes rack and cleared out a three-foot radius with the next swing, only barely dodged by the priestess. "Hell to you, your whore mother, and all three of your fathers-"
"Got you!" The ex-soldier had picked himself out of the shattered glass and assorted wares just in time to tackle his allies' adversary to the ground- and just below an arcane blast.
"Dammit, Erert, stay out of my casting line!" A gnome wizard who was still huffing and puffing from his hurried pursuit of the others lowered his finger before dodging the thrown body of Erert, who rolled to take the impact.
"Sorry, Monder, but our friend's not as nice as I am." Standing up, Erert drew a shortsword strapped to his side and placed himself between the wizard and danger. "Gotta run outta steam sometime, though."

Adjusting his glasses, Modner checked Erert's state to find he was still capable for combat. "Indeed. This is nothing less than our most difficult assignment yet."
"Tell me when YOU get defenestrated." The human sellsword snorted before turning his good eye back to the target, which charged him and grabbed his forearms, holding him a few inches above the ground.
His legs instinctively flailed, and he nearly choked as the furious foe roared, "I TOLD YOU TO STOP HELPING ME!"
At this, Galegon looked around the corner again and recognized an opening when he saw one. "Bingo."
Before Mili could drive her hammer into the barbarian's exposed back, Alablung turned just short of three-quarters and hurled a knife across the empty street with a practiced, fluid snap of the wrist.
A defiant screech echoed across nearly a quarter of the capital city as their enemy, who they had been following for over six months, finally collapsed, exhausted and unconscious but alive.
Finally regaining the use of his hands, Erert gave a narrowed look to Galegon. "Where was that HALF AN HOUR ago?"
An innocent shrug was the only response. "Not my fault. You didn't set it up."
"Dear heavens-" The king arrived with his guard, who were unsettled at the towering figure they saw sprawled on the ground.
"I had heard, but I was not-" The monarch covered his face with his hands for a second, attempting to concentrate. "-I am truly sorry I did not believe you earlier and you had to deal with this."
"The important part of the matter is that you take the lesson to heart." Mili put down her hammer and leaned on her shield.
The slightly rotund wizard stepped forward, nodding solemnly. "Yes, and pay us, of course."
"That's my line, Modner." Galegon swaggered in front of the king and his retainers. "I assume this means you believe our tales?"
One of the guards picked up what was left of the formerly-mentioned fruit stand with one hand, gazing amazed at the damage. "Holy shit."

The king looked around at all the wreckage and swallowed. "...Stronger than I expected."
"And payment is?"
The human regent sighed in defeat, before holding out a hand. "Incoming."

She's actually an ancient red dragon that killed the princess and took her place in order to own the entire kingdom without having any responsibility to rule it.
Everyone knows it but nobody says anything because a) the original Princess was kind of a bitch and this new on pretty much is a shut in masturbating all the time in the treasury, and b) nobody really wants to fight a red dragon over whether or not she can masturbate in the treasury, and finally c) When she does leave it's to bully corporations trying to remove money from her Kingdom.
It's adorable how each time she forgets she's a Dragon and uses magic/super strength/fire breath she just claims it's a natural ability of princesses to defend themselves from Knights and everyone else has gone along with it so she's come to believe it's true.
Mostly it's adorable because it makes her extremely suspicious and aggressive towards but also afraid of other Princesses since she assumes they all have special powers.
There's some speculation that she's so stupid that there's probably White Dragon somewhere in her heritage.

>Then they need to get her out of the country since the invading enemy army has already captured the capital and are hunting down the remaining royal family and there are men still loyal to her father that can take care of her once you get her to safety.
Now the players are going to ask "How much do we get if we just sell her to the invading army?" and then you through roleplay try to have her come up with a convincing enough reason not to have them sell her out. If it works you'll have a personalized non-contrived reason for her to matter to the characters and if it fails then so long princess.

Begin her in an abbey where she is learning the basics of being a Cleric. While there, she receives a message in her dream from a God of an impending threat to the world. After completing a trial, she returns to her home to her kingdom trying to avoid her role as a princess.
There's demon attack at the festival hurts her the hardest. She loses her family, making her the last in line for the crown and her kingdom is in ruins. To save the lives of the citizens, she gives the demons the most powerful magical object in the castle, and appeases them to spare her kingdom.
Afterwards, she joins with the PCs with grim determination to reclaim this object and thwart the demon's plans to use it to revive the demon's god.
