Greetings /tg/
I am building up a crafing system for mage staves.
Mage PCs can assemble upt to four pieces: the stick, the head, the trinkets and the core.
The core should be the thing that powers up the staff, by recieving the incantation the mage casts and storing it, making the staff an actual magical object instead of just a puzzle of inert parts.
It can be the classic gem of power, it can be a pulsating heart, it can be some kind of magical fluid inside a vial.
It can even be something immaterial, a sacrifice that binds the soul to the staff.
What else can you suggest it to be, /tg/?
Thanks in advance
System is WFRP, but it's not that important: anything that is enough low fantasy will be fitting.

Practice! And I read too much.

Items bought from a general store that aroused the suspicions of the seller.
>only glanced over the suggestions.
If i were to create such a system. i would probably provide an example list of like 10 items and how well they work as a core and then leave it to the P(C)s to find something appropriate on their own.
They can make checks before hand to try and find out how effective the Core will be, but only the fully assembled staff shows how powerful the core really is, or if the PC just miscalculated.
Also;
bones (or pieces of them), organs or whole body parts of exceptonally mighty or magical creatures are always good.
Shards or Pieces of once mighty artifact, weapons or armor
A lovers handkerchief
A family heirloom
A cog from a very old clock
A toy that belonged to your dead child
A general idea could be that items which a strong feelings associated with them work very well.
As an addition the staff would only work for its creator, since the core only has a meaning for them.
