This thread is about RPG's, but you could apply it to board games and card games as well.
I live in an area that has the highest concentration of FLGS in the U.S. Many of them open early to host RPG sessions. I spent another Saturday traveling betwixt game stores, taking a look at all the different RPG groups meeting up. I was immediately reminded of all my times on roll20, all my times traveling to Gen Con, running games at my house, playing in games at others houses.
Why are RPG players so maladjusted? Bad employment, bad hygiene, difficulty in social situations, bad physical condition, bad control of emotions, extremely weak willpower against addiction.
I have well-adjusted friends, but they only want to go out hiking or to play sports, and aren't interested in "traditional" games when I try and invite them.
I just want to play or run a game with a human being who bathes, doesn't look at his phone constantly, and is able to have a conversation.
Where is my dysfunction, what am I doing wrong in my search?

You're committing the same classic blunder that people looking for players in gamefinder threads are so fond of. That being looking to play with people that nobody else wants to play with.
Invite your coworkers or classmates, see if it sticks. People who you actually want to be around, rather than people who play X.

I've hardly set a foot in any gameshop and I'm forming new groups with new people left and right. Seriously.
I've formed seververal groups with serveral combinations of close friends, all objectively cool and creative people. Board games are sliding into mainstream here in Belgium, that helps.
Two other categories of people I've had success with that could help you:
Semi-nerds, those guys who are lingering on the edge of meme and cosplay twice a year but otherwise live a pretty standard life.
Art students, they are devoting their student years to creativity and story-telling, surely some of them are interested in trying something new.
Yoe know, the more I think about it, the more I get the feeling my circle of friends is awesome and I can totally be a bragging shit about it on 4chan.

People that game at FLGS's are crap representation of the hobby. Why play D&D (or, god forbid, anything else) in a store where you can't drink beer, you've got random 15 year olds asking dumb questions, and the chairs are about as comfortable as church pews?
The answer is if you don't have anywhere else to game, and you're either too much of a sperg for people to invite you into their homes, or too shitty to have people over to your own place, or too new/friendless to have either option.
My usual gaming group for the last 15 years has never played outside of a home or (rarely) at a bar. The few times I've played at a FLGS - usually Pathfinder or D&D organized play - I've been surrounded by spergs. Don't rely on your FLGS as a pool of potential gamers. Convert your friends or make friends with an established group. Or put up with the spergs and sift through the trash at your FLGS until you find a few other decent people (this will take a lot of patience and trying) and then move to someones house ASAP.
Really, the FLGS is like the appendix of the hobby. All the shit and weirdness gets trapped there, because they don't have anywhere else to go.

I say some. No doubt you are correct that running a game in some FLGS is terrible.
My local store, by constrast, is pretty awesome for it. They have a dedicated gaming space on a seperate floor to the shop, so you don't have randoms pestering you, and the chairs aren't terrible. I grant you, you can't drink alcohol, but that's a minor point. I can't say I've seen many truly awful people there, but that may just be my luck.

If you like closed-group story games, you're kinda SOL. The idea is that you have a roleplaying experience that people can drop and drop out of like a weekly board games night.
This potentially means running a kick in the door, take the loot dungeon crawler in a location that is ripe for exploration and won't truly be cleared.

A FLGS is a space with a big table, really. My old GM just used it because he worked there and all the books and dice were already there. It sounds like you're describing people playing, like, during business hours? Or at least during events? That's so fucked and strange of an idea to me that it might explain some of the dissonance I'm having with this thread. But then I've also played M:tG at stores in the area and had a good time so there's some other disconnect. I can confirm that this works. After a bunch of abortive attempts at getting an RPG group together, I've started playing with a bunch of friends from uni, most of whom have never played RPGs before. It's one of, if not the best, groups I've played in.

Well adjusted people have to constantly maintain that. Exercise, social activities, ect ect. People who play RPGs have to maintain their knowledge of the setting and rules, their freedom to play these games and learn all this information.
Neither of them are necessarily bad - just both require different things and often include differing responsibilities that people often cannot juggle at once if they want to get too deeply into either of them, and people have difficulty changing their habits and viewpoints.

It was easy as a kid - just made friends with a couple guys that were into it, and we had a solid group for 5 years.
As an adult, its impossible.
