Now if it's actually a part of the setting and their characterization doesn't begin and end on "uhh it's cute i guess", then it's fine.my setting even has a mithra/miqo'te-like catpeople race. So far none of NPCs were waifu'd or husbando'd.

A waifu, in the original /a/ vernacular is a female character from an anime that you are in love with. You devote your life to this 2D, fictional character whose entire personality is derived by a writer (or even more debased, a team of writers) and collect massive amounts of art and paraphernalia based around her. Even though she is imaginary, even though she is likely the waifu of many other Anons, you still pathetically devote yourself to her because you are a disgusting basement dwelling /a/utist who would never dare go outside. That is what a waifu is. Husbando is the reverse term, for girls who aren't quite fujoshit but who certainly aren't anywhere near normies.
Now it's just a term for a girl, not even necessarily a fictitious one, as GoT general on /tv/ shows us, that you dig and think is cute.

Do note that that video is 4 and a half years old by now, and as already mentioned, the word's usage has already changed again, but the video is still pretty informative as to the roots of the word.
