DA DW are gross because according to DW:OK they wear hoods while serving in the DW. That's just tacky as fuck. I never liked the robes when they were in their home chapter, but bringing it over to DW too?

It's like people who wear jackets over a hoodie, except a million times worse.

I don't think so. There was some joke when an anon asked if she was "happy screamer anon", with a bit of light innuendo on that, which seemed to be more on the anon with the poorly phrased anon rather than her. Posting again since I didn't get a response last thread (my own fault for leaving it until 450ish posts).

Considering dwarfs are about 90% beard, I want to make sure they are done right. What do you guys think of the beards I have here?

They are:
Zameri Desert, washed with Agrax Earthshade.
Steel Legion Drab, washed with Agrax Earthshade.
Dawnstone, washed with Nuln Oil. (I don't think I am going to do it this way again)
Troll Slayer Orange, washed with Reikland Fleshshade.
I also have another model which isn't pictured there, which is Eshin Grey, washed with Nuln Oil, then after I brightened it back up, I highlighted it with Dawnstone, since it looked to dark without.

For white beards, I have one basecoated Ulthuan Grey, but I am not sure what colour to wash it with. I know that Agrax Earthshade or Seaphim Sepia applied carefully works well on clothing and armour, but will it look good on hair, or would Nuln Oil come out looking better?
>>
>>47112655

What are you talking about, you had like 6 responses.
>>
>>47112655
I thought slayers dyed their hair red, looks a bit odd to see that shade on an ironbreaker.
>>
first attempt at marble effect. did a base coat of dark grey with a bit of green. then did the lines with thinned white paint and added random areas with dark green wash. then i sealed it all with coats of a white wash to melt everything together. Any tips on how i could improve it further?

And general tips on how to make sharp lines when highlighting the aircrafts edges?
>>
>>47112798

Small synthetic brush, keep it at a 45 degree angle and use very very small amounts of paint. Moisten the brush a little but don't thin the paint to the point where it's runny.
>>
>>47112006
As poster of the innuendo I would feel bad if that scared her off, but as the Instagram is the same as it's always been I don't think we've seen the last of those beautiful daemons.
>>
>>47112893
So i use the tip of the brush to run along the edge?
>>
>>47112737
I figured that just because slayer dye their hair red, it doesn't mean there can't be natural red heads.
I think as long as I don't start doing regular Dwarfs with mohawk, I am fine.

There doesn't seem to be a prevailing direction for the flaws in the marble, although after the last guy's LONG journey with marble effects I think you should post your reference whenever you ask about marble.

The marble flaws are also quite smooth on the edges, whereas blurred or feathered edges often looks better.
>>
>>47112909

The side of the tip
>>
>>47112909
You can use the flat of the brush on the edge. Not everything is about the tip.

Check out almost any Duncan video, he shows that technique a lot (off the top of my head it's in the Chaos Warrior tutorial)
>>
>>47112732

>>
>>47112926
I remember that thread. I dont think i had a specific reference besides something alike the pattern on the dark talon on the GW store site. i can imagine i need more small, secondary lines of anything. should i do anythign to enhance the edges of the marble?

unless you legitimately asked a question/advice, fishing for replies (like that death guard dude) is a bit of a dick act. most of the time when people post shit here I scroll past and think, "hey that looks cool" but the only thing commenting that adds is replies. loads of people are looking at your shit man, it's ok. the dwarves are cool.

Is that not a legitimate enough question? I honestly have no idea how to do white in this particular circumstance.

Last time I also asked for general tips as well as about how to do the white, but I figured if people had any they would say them anyway.
>>
>>47113128
I forgot to mention my main worry is because on armour or clothing, the shading is normally there to represent shadow, or darker areas in general, but in hair it is less of a shadow more of a depth look (if you get what I mean), which is why I am stumped on how to do it.

>>47113166
Dilute some Nuln quite a bit with medium and apply it a little at a time, focusing towards the parts of the beard where it's thickest / densest (braids, the area just below the chin).

You can then decide if the effect is too subtle and add more if you think it needs it.

Wouldn't shade it with a brown as actual white hair is quite a cool white, and Ulthuan doesn't have much brown in it anyway.

Can anyone recommend a good way to cover up glue joints when spray priming and base coating model sub-assemblies? I'm getting tired of scraping paint off already and I'm not even close to finishing everything.

First I considered tape, but it would be a lot of slicing and placing tape in tiny places.

Now I'm thinking of brushing on plasti dip where I dont want paint, and peeling it off after I've done all the spraying.

Any thoughts?

Plastic glue will not work at all on metal models. It works by fusing the two plastic pieces together, melting them ever so slightly. If one of the pieces is metal, then this whole scheme... comes unglued!

Gotta use the side of the tip at a 45 degree angle with very little paint on it for those edge highlights. Can't use the tip or paint will go everywhere.

You can easily salvage this highlight by making it thinner with the original colors though.

>>
>>47119798
I don't think that would be a good idea for the overall scene, too many colors are a bad thing.
You see, there are two main colors in the squad: white and green, and each one of these have one main contrasting color: black and red, respectively. Adding something blue to that would look weird and out of place. Another reason is I think the platform has enough gems already, as the red color should be minimal in order to let the green dominate the pair.
Color theory is fun.

yep. Imperial Armor Vol. 1 2nd edition lets you field all kinds of armor from the depths of the munitorum warehouse.

salamanders basically play like an autocannon armored sentinel that has a few extra guns and are a Fast vehicle (plus they cost about the same and can scout or outflank). Very cool and underappreciated vehicles that provide much necessary speed in a plodding imperial guard armored battlegroup.

Next batch of bases done.
The one with the grating is for the Deathwatch terminator that I'll be fielding along with the other guys. Not terribly fond of the one in the upper right corner as it's pretty boring. The top middle one might get some broken pipes lying across it once I figure out what legs are going on the base.
For the guy who was wondering the paneling is made with 18 gauge nailgun nails in a double layer so there's a bit of space in between.

Your call obviously, but I found some of the fuckhueg mutation sprue limbs looked better on light infantry figs when cut down at the shoulder a bit. If you're talking about plastic models and spray enamel primer, masking isn't necessary. Styrene cement will easily blast through enamel primer on its way to melting the plastic parts themselves without weakening the join. I can't vouch for the strength of joins using other paints though, so if you airbrush your primer using acrylics for instance, masking may indeed be necessary.

Looks nice, but I reckon you could push the contrast further:
> around rivets
>on the scale half-tabards.
> shadow behind the guy on the left's knee-guard could be deeper/darker
>shadows on underside of armour contours

Weapons are clean but not very exciting.

Highlights on the purple are thick in places, both in width and I think I can see some texture.
Clean those up with your base colour.

The shoulders on Stormcasts are also large enough that doing a zenithal highlight on them looks really nice and isn't actually that hard.

As others have said, dark bases to contrast the minis.

I won't give you paint names as I have a good mixing sense and don't care about labels, but you want a desaturated yellow (primary yellow + a little bit of grey) and a cool deep blue (cyan + a little bit of purple) to start with.
>>
>>47125205
IIRC you said that was Fireblade in the other thread and this is a filthy nitpick but Fireblade is described as having a golden blade that 'forever burned with the fires of the forge', and has a dark iron hilt.
>>
>>47128888
The camera kills it a bit, but I'm afraid you are correct, it actually turned out a little bit flat, should have used a darker grey. You can see it a little bit better here >>47119031

This is my first eldar unit so it's not a big matter, I can do the white better in the next thing I paint (either a wave serpent or a wraithlord), then come back to the guardians to update the white with more contrast. Right now I'm a bit tired of this squad so I'll leave them like this for now.
>>
>>47129089
You've got the hardest bit down atleast. Smooth white is shitty to do typically.

Maybe try a super thinned wash just into the shadowed areas.
I'm talking like 1:10 wash to thinner. You just need that hint to break up the white board effect.
>>
>>47115478

Testing skin paint schemes on my first orc for a new army, thoughts?
>>
>>47129244
Not bad, like a darker sort of tone.

The contrast with the teeth really changes your skin look though. You should do the mouth to get a better idea.

Do you have a set pallet for the clothing yet?
>>
>>47129270
Not really, I was going to go for a savage orc army so there won't really be much clothes as such, but I guess tattoos will be there, I was thinking purple tattoos.

Also I've never really done open mouths, what would you suggest for the inside of the mouth?
>>
>>47129403
I've done ork armies 2 ways.

Assume their blood is green. So they get a light green skin tone with some very subtle pale flesh tones in the highlights. Then the inside of the mouth is dark green. With a gloss varnish so it looks very wet.

Or a more traditional darker all green skin tone with a very vibrant red tongue and gums.
Then the teeth get a yellow base coat highlighting up to bone so they look quite bright with a touch of yellowness at their base.

For their clothing I tend to go reds, browns and neutral tones.
Weapons and steel gets a forge blackened look rather than the overly rustly look you often see. With shine on the bits that see heavy movement and use.
Yellow decorations and checker pattern for details as I still love the 90s style orks.

Tanks get that similar forge blackening with some roughtly painted racing stripes usually in patchy red.
Then oily looking grunge running out of the bolts and engine areas.

There's a very delecate balance between grungely looking and just a garbage paint job.

As far as speed I'd lay down every colour on all of them at once.

tried drybrushing the lighter bronze. Realized my mistake later. Hopefully an extra coat of green will hide most of it.

The purple smudge isn't actually a smudge. It's either a shadow or reflection, because it's not on the model, just on the pic. unless you mean the strap and satchel, because those are going to be brone, and need another couple coats, because I trying to paint the runes under the strap without hitting the strap wasn't working. so I figured I paint the strap after.

nice! as an answer to your question about how much time/effort peoples spend on their scenery, it depends really. a friend of mine scratchbuilds/paints his own, with a level of detail thats awsome. people at my gaming club mostly buy theirs and paint it from basecoat/drybrush level to really nice. i personally don't do scenery, somehow i don't get round to it. from time to time i have a nice idea and make some sketches but it never gets build

>>47133957
paint thickness isn't terrible, but if you get it done in one coat and you aren't wash painting or painting something that's really close to the primer in color, it's too thick.

The brown/bronze is probably the worst parts, but those also look bad because they have no shading. I also can't tell if you have actual hightlights of if that's just the light, but overall very flat.

You're also stepping into just over the line of becoming overly busy looking, which models like this are prone too. Shading, saturation and chroma control could help tone that down. But that's not a major issue.

Think I'm gonna have to go with some regular edge highlights. I normally do dry brushing but this color scheme doesn't lend itself well to it.

Also going to stick some German tank number decals on the engine blocks, I think that'll look really sharp once I'm done
>>
>>47136386
True enough the model would be better without the gladius. I always paint my stuff in separated parts, almost every part alone, sometimes putting torso and legs together but that's it. Spend a good 30 mins when you're done painting to see how the whole thing can be posed, because that can definitely make or break a model.
I still prefer a much earlier ork boy that I painted even though his paintjob is not as good, simply because the pose is soooo dynamic comapred to the others.
But I battled for quite some time as I was stupid enough not to dryfit first with him, wanting to see another model finished as fast as possible.
Sorry for the blog post.

I have two groups of two Wookiee Warriors for Imperial Assault that I am planning to paint up. Pic related shows someone's painted (and slightly modded) versions.

I plan to paint one group with silvery/steel armor pieces and the other group with bronze/golden armor pieces. I know how I plain to do the steel armor, but any tips on a good gold or bronze armor look?

I did post a Dervish some days ago. Now I am preparing a Jenner, it will be just red, with black lines. The visor will be a dark green.

you will need to do multiple coats. Expect 2-4 if you're doing it right.
A properly thinned paint should actually flow more smoothly than a too thick paint, but you need to make sure you don't have too much paint on the brush or it will spread out like your worried about.
Also, using medium instead of water helps with getting good coverage and control.

For bronze, copper and gold I've found that white actually looks worse and requires more coats than black, gray or brown. For bronze a single first coat of warplock bronze over the full surface, followd by a coat of lighter bronze on the raised surfaces give a really nice effect.
Or two coats your normal color, shade with agrax then highlight.

repeating for effect, after you learn to thin properly, you need to learn to control the amount of paint on your brush. Having less on the brush and going back to the pallet more often is better for details.

well we have money to buy more stuff, and don't live at home so we can set up a good painting area. and we've developed an actual work ethic so we spend the time we set asside for painting well.

Could Contrast More.

Take your lightest silver and hit the high points like the points of the plates on his sabatons, tips of the scales on his skirt, weapon tips, and I'd also hit his mask to bring more focus to the face.

I think it's
>they have purple shoulderpads

I'm getting some cheapo starter set Liberators in next week and hope to go for a look like pic related.
I may end up doing a rainbow squad of different test finishes as my local store's manager has a huge pile of the bastards that he wants rid of.

Okay, so I got these cheap bones figures today as possible head swaps.
I am also going to re-do the arms. I will probably remove the space marine shoulder pads all together in order to allow space for larger shoulders. I may cut down the number of limbs even though I really like the idea of 9.

If you keep the book and give him the super beaky head, you can nickname him Thoth.
>>

Might use the wings from the left dude instead of the metal ones... thoughts?
>>

I think I will use Thoth and maybe use the serpent head as a "hand." Maybe not.

Didn't want to say while you were obviously heavily committed to the arm plan, but I agree with this course of action.

I think your extra arms should actually start at the body instead of the elbow, as it puts so much visual weight away from the centre, while wings and arms radiating from the centre shouldn't have the same effect.
When taking the wings into account as well, the many, many arms detract from a nice silhouette.

I think I'd recommend planning your primary arms (suggest you use the book and staff or kris) on each side.

It would then be very cool to have one or two hands poring over the book, maybe going to turn the page or holding a lamp / torch.

On the other side, after you pose your main arm (I think pointing the staff as a spellcasting gesture would be cool), you could either mirror it with the others you want to keep (which will keep them roughly parallel and help keep interest central), or try some other crazy stuff.

I'm fond of the idea of him holding the kris behind his back while reaching out with an open hand.
