Kobolds, /tg/. I want pictures, books, articles, videos, stories. Inspire me to new heights with kobold-related shenanigans for my campaign.

Love your stuff
I actually played a Kobold Monk recently in Pathfinder, and it went really well.
I'm one of the most experienced players in my group, and we were getting some new rookies with this round of campaigning, so I was asked to be more of a support & skill fill for the newer guys who would invariably play their class straight with little deviance. So instead of playing a Dwarvish or Human monk, I picked a Kobold Monk. And not just any Kobold, a Carnation Scale Kobold.
And I played him like a tiny typhoon of fury & fists.
It's worth noting that Pathfinder Kobold culture is very much made up of racial hatred for anything but Kobolds and Dragons. The fact that he was A) a pink Kobold, and B) a heavy martial class, meant that he was literally for all intents and purposes a walking talking contradiction. Just take a Cutebold and make him a candidate for the Angry Marines.
We started off by clearing out some demonic possession on a tree spirit by stomping the shit out of it and it's animated fruit goblins. I spent most of that game just CCing everything in sight with stunning strike & similar status effects. At the end I even managed to avoid pissing off a druidic deity via knowledge: religions. The second session I played it a little more in character, and fucked off when we arrived on an island where locals were being harassed by sea serpents & pissed off sea dragon deities. Needless to say my character hopped on the whole dragon deity bit, and even smacked the shit out of one of our teammates for hitting on the daughter of one of the deities in an incredibly trashy manner (she was hiding among the native population to avoid her enraged father). He got rewarded at the end with draconic features, and electric elemental damage, which really reinforced the typhoon fury bit. We had quite a bit of fun with that campaign, but by the end of it I was woefully underpowered, being a small creature.

So, I've found multiple homebrew kobold races for DnD 5e. Which ones do you guys like?
i love kobolds!
im not even sure that's a kobold.
I actually don't like kobolds much, but I have some art.
Anyone nabbed a screenshot of the 'boldtube comment from the thread yesterday? :(
I've wanted to try and get a petition going around to pass on to Paizo / Wizards to change Kobolds stat-block to a more reasonable number. No one would change anything, but I think it'd be nice if they'd finally get rid of that stupid -4 STR. Even just lower it to -2 I'd be fine with- it'd be nice if they could be brought up to a reasonable little monstrous race, though- as opposed to being the absolute shit version of Goblins.
"But muh natural armurr"

>Already have lizard men in my setting and have no idea how I'm going to justify both
>>47122657
One lives on another continent. Early on a common ancestor migrated and they evolved differently.
Only now are the kobolds beginning to show up on the other continent after sneaking aboard trade ships to loot, but then the ship left port with them on board.
>>47122657
What's there to justify? They can be at least as different from each other as humans and dwarfs or halflings or whatever.
>>47123022
Well I don't really have dwarves or halflings either, but I would ask for feedback on this idea;
>Eggs of lizardmen determine their size
>Hotter temperatures decrease the size of the resulting baby and bring out more draconian traits, though obviously there is lower limit of how cold it can be or else baby won't develop
>Lizardmen grow their children in warm spring waters or in large compost heaps; makes 7 and a half foot tall lizard men
>Humans sometimes steal or buy slave - eggs from the lizard people, put them in blankets on their beds or next to fire places; hatches into 4 foot tall little cute kobolds
>Rarely humans raise the eggs in a really hot place or a Wizard keeps a special Fite burning around the egg for maximum heat; hatches into tiny 1 foot tall at most knuckle dragons, which actually have fire breath. Basically Mushu.
How does this work?
>>47122657
Long ago, a group of Dwarves and a group of Lizard men were at war with one another. Their war was so great and terrible that it brought the mountains down around them, trapping them all in a cavern deep, deep underground. The two sides decided that they would need to work together in order to survive, and, one thing leading to another, they eventually began interbreeding.
Thusly, a race of Shortstack Kobolds was born.

>>47127377
Are you saying goblins are masterwork kobolds?
>>47127377
I just got to this thread, but what you just said sounds like exactly what I did, so I pulled out the homebrew version of Kobold I did. These are designed around the now commonly accepted idea of them acting like Tucker's Kobolds, being masters of traps and stuff. This particular setting also had them as skilled engineers in general, building clever and intricate devices to give them an edge in their underground environment. Built for Pathfinder.
Small size
30 foot move speed
60 ft Darkvision
Light Blindness
+1 Natural Armour
+2 racial bonus on Craft (Trapmaking), Profession (Miner), and Perception
-Craft (Trapmaking) and Stealth are always class skills
-Automatically proficient with all self-made weapons
+4 Dex, -2 Con, -2 Str
The idea here is that Kobold, while physically weak, are viciously clever, and even keeping one captured can prove dangerous. Any adult Kobold has spent enough time helping maintain the communal traps that they can usually kludge together surprisingly deadly devices from random scrap.
Prideful but cowardly, they really do rely on fighting on their terms. Walking straight into a Kobold chokepoint is a good way to get gunned down by a chorus of burst-fire repeating crossbows.
If that seems excessive, it's because black powder weapons are used by other races in the setting, but Kobold dislike them for the bright flash and noise which makes them unpleasant for tunnel use. In a setting with no black powder, they should probably tuned down to just use high-grade regular crossbows.

I actually had a GM that made a big talk about how "my character would be hated" in society if I chose to play kobold, but I think he softened his stance when he noticed everyone else in the party was playing monsters. Regardless, I bought a disguise kit as part of my starting equipment just so I wouldn't be overly hindered.
The DM ruled that the disguise kit was entirely made of mr. potato head pieces. I asked if that meant I could get unlimited uses out of it, and he agreed.
I spent the rest of the short-lived campaign wearing a plastic moustache and glasses with a bowler hat resting on top of my hedgehog familiar who was acting as my wig, telling anyone in the bar who would listen I was a dragon.

>>47156183

>>47165349
I think that Tucker's kobolds are a way to make them more of a race rather than only somebody's minions.
>>47123962
Lizardmen are a "perfect" hybrid between dragons and cold-blooded lizards, being that cold conditions means hostile conditions, and their body develop in order to be able to fight quickly. On the other hand, warmer conditions means better conditions, meaning that they may start weaker in order to grow with time in stronger beings, developing their magic or physical bodies.
>>47122657
In my setting Kobolds are cursed Dragons, stripped from their magic and might because of reasons.
For said reasons they are divided between those that are fighting for redemption and those fighting for revenge, either way they have to do the best with what they have, so they usually turn into political figures, rogues, clerics or engineers in order to achieve some degree of power, being the latter one the most important class inside their society for being the responsible for maintaining it without depending on other races and/or beings.
Any source on :

>>47167598
>>47167674
Usually the sword with a guns and not by far, because the guns usually easier to break despite of it's higher power.
But these are more questions of setting rather than race. For the usual take on the race I would say that they usually reproduce from 4 to 8 times faster than humans (cycles of 4 months probably). They tend to have their lives cut short, but they have long natural life spans (a few centuries for a healthy and powerful one), and they reach "maturity" very quickly in the range of 7~10 years
>>47167598
>How fast do they breed ? (X eggs every Y weeks)
>How long do they live ?
>How long untill they are mature enough to lay eggs ?
Races of the Dragon for D&D 3.5 gives some info. It says that it's 2 weeks from conception to egglaying, then 60 days till hatching. No mention of breeding cycles, so it's unknown how long it takes before they're able to have another egg. Physical maturity at 6-10 years of age (full adulthood is 11+ years old). Middle age is 60 years, old age 90, and maximum age is ~120.
>>47167598
A kobold can lay eggs as soon as its body is large enough to accommodate at least one egg. Once they ate big enough to hold two eggs they lay two, and so on up until their full size, somewhere between 6-8 eggs.
>>47127446
>"Big-ass titties!"

>>47169407
Kobolds are generally just small lizardfolk at this point.
>>47108901
Kobold are lizard-like or dog-like?
>>47170668
In d&d they were originally little goblin things with dog-like muzzles, small horns, rat-like tails, and covered in scales.
>>47170668
Since 3rd edition D&D they've been playing up the idea that they're related to dragons, so they're most like weak dragonkin/dragonborn whatever.
Outside of D&D they're gnomes that live in mines.
>>47170668

>>47170834
>>47170875
Thanks, I just remember them in "Baldur's Gate" and Tormenta.

>>47171327
>>47171234
Let's start simply. Where do they live and what is their overall cultural aesthetic?
>>47170668
Depends on the setting. I hate to say that, but it's true. Default for most settings after 3e D&D seems to be lizard-like, but dog-like is still popular (kobolds ate my baby), and some even go with rat-like (Warcraft)
>>47171114
I've got something kinda like that in a setting I'm working on. Thanks to needing less food per head and being able to eat a wider variety of stuff, there's a large and organized kobold population inhabiting the great desert and the surrounding coasts (think north africa, environment-wise). While they used to be a bunch of small kingdoms, a self-styled "emperor" recently (~60 years ago) started taking over and uniting a large number of them. Tech-wise, they're roughly even with the more normal races on the northern continent, but culturally they are quite distinct.

the original Midgard Campaign Setting book talks a lot more about the setting and the kobolds place in it. Midgard Heroes really is only full of rules to run the setting in 5e.
All I can say for finding it is look for a torrent, as I have yet to find a direct download link that still works and aint a scam. Of course could ask for it in the 7chan request thread.
>>47171627
it was a bit popular for a short while, I think mostly because you could get tf2 hats playing the game. then dropped out of relevance due to it's pay to play system IIRC
>>47174673

>>47171627
It's is (mostly was) a F2P RPG with Legend of Zelda style gameplay and one of the most adorable art styles in all of recent gaming. It never got super popular because there was always this dearth of content that was never really rectified over the run of the game, and the way the F2P system was set up didn't do it any favors to win over the hardcore crowd.

reread what I said. Heroes of Midgard gives you stats for 5e, but not any sort of setting information in depth. It is only 30 pages

personally prefer the stat line from Midgard, in fact maybe I will just dump it and a few tidbits of info.
one of my favorite tidbits
>Kobolds are deeply enamored of their tools, and some kobolds spend a great deal of effort to improve them. Mining picks, a mason’s hammer, jeweler’s loup, and even simple items like a kobold’s spear or dagger are all named and cherished. At the same time, kobolds tend to gnaw on tool handles, forget to oil blades, or even pry out inlays or decorative gems to improve them. As a result, most kobold items are entirely distinctive and unlikely to be mistaken for anyone else’s items. Some believe this decorative urge may be a form of defense against theft.
>>47185041
It would be fun to have Kobolds believe in a Shinto-styled animism in which all their tools and cherished objects possess a spirit of their own.

Running a Viking+Cthulhuian campaign. Come to the rescue of a wounded dragon who is against a Dark One's lieutenant. The dragon dies, but with some very lucky rolls we save her last egg (others were being used as sacrifices) and a single kobold servant. No story progression on the egg thus far, but the kobold has become a npc "mascot" and we've even gotten him training and some combat experience. Due to his 5E creation he is lucky and fuck me if he isn't. At one point he last-hit 5 orcs after we bled them to minimum hp.
