Change objective as soon as possible, you must now locate the village and return your friend to her parents. As to the morality of the situation, I'd say it depends. If you knew she was a kid from the start, then yeah you're a piece of crap, if you didn't, the fact is that her parents are probably worried sick and you should really get her home. This will either be a great chance to retire the character or simply have a bit of character development during the sidequest before the parents give their approval. (Perhaps giants typically go wandering when they come of age and her parents won't mind as long as they get a letter now and then.)

A large number of characters are juveniles as well. You can create a character as young as 15 in a lot of systems, which is a juvenile as well. They may not be making the best decisions, but by a lot of standards, the character is still responsible for themselves.
Now if we are talking much younger - going through puberty, for example - then it would be understandable to be more concerned about their welfare. But if the character is that young, it really should come across by the way they act and handle situations. It should not come across as that much of a surprise to anyone who has spent a lot of time with them.

Defenseless innocents can also have special privileges under the law that they can leverage over the common man (e.g. control of currency), so even if they are defenseless when alone, they become dangerous in a system.
Defenseless innocents are also able to act as baby factories for producing well-armed warriors, and sometimes it's more efficient to cut the problem off at the source.
I agree with you that defenseless innocents who are uninvolved with the conflict/problem, should be kept out of danger. But it's important to put limits on how far being a defenseless innocent can protect you.

Basically a orphan recruited into a civil war stirred up by a noble seeking to gain power politically and secure an artifact held by a local group of low key clergyman in a semi-hidden temple. The kid was ironically a bastard child of the noble and the one to put him down along with the rest of his squad after they stormed his estate at the tail end of a 8 year war. The king didn't want to keep paying wages since the economy was destroyed after so much fighting. Character found he taste for killing and since he was 'retiring' he decided he'd try his hand at banditry. Bandits turned out to be a bunch of cowards that went after the old ladies and even children instead of anyone who'd put up a fight. Character figures he doesn't like this as much as he thought so he goes around and puts an axe to each one of the bandits during his turn at nightwatch while they sleep. He then took some supplies and torched the place since he's not very materialistic. Now he goes around with the party looking for things to kill . He enjoys cooking monsters since I have a hard on for Dungeon Meshi but the GM insists that results of his cooking are either "unnerving but edible" or "affronts to the Gods". Sadly we don't keep track of food or water so these are just roleplaying opportunities. The character isn't necessarily evil, but his understanding of mercy is to completely destroy the enemy rather than let them suffer and die after you failed to finish them properly. He doesn't believe in drawing a weapon unless you mean to use it either. Over all he doesn't cause the party trouble. That's the druid's job.
