>because the party can't understand the BBEG and don't have the means to do so, the sweet and perky interpreter must deliver his fierce monologue
>>
>>46882231
We can hire her on after we kill him, right? We needed an interpreter the last 3 sessions.
>>
>>46882231
It can be funny when C3-P0 does this, but it's just irritating in ttrpgs more often than not
>>
Is she OUR interpreter, or his?
>>
>>46882261
>the interpreter is actually a lich in disguise.
>>
>>46882273
His interpreter.
>>
>>46882273
Yes.
>>
>>46882303
Well then, it's clearly time for me, as the party bard, to spend the entire exchange alternately flirting shamelessly with, and offering work to, the cute terp.
>>
>The interpreter accidentally literally translates an idiom
>Instead of "I shall outlast you all and still be here when you are dead", she says "YOU WILL NOT OUTLIVE ME! I SHALL BURY YOU!"
>>
>>46882231
Why yes, I do want to make a sweet girl relay my smack talk to them, now that you mention it
>>
>>46882267
One of the reasons for having a translation spell of some kind, preferably as a permanent effect.

>>46882367
Ah, the classic shoe slamming technique.
>>
>>46882287
I'm not sure whether I would love a twist where she was the BBEG all along or just think the GM was out of ideas. Somewhere in between.
>>
>>46882231
It doesn't really work very well. When you're translating strong letter, or emotional speech, you tend to tone it down a bit. Partially because you're just relaying the message and have no emotional investment yourself, partially because you're aware of the risk that if receiving party is simple minded they might direct their immediate wrath on you.

t. former translator
>>
>>46882231
Doin' it wrong. There's only one language that matters with your enemies, it's the poetry you write in their blood.
>>
>>46882614
You're doing it wrong as well, while poetry of blood has undeniable merits, you should not underestimate other bodily fluids.
>>
>>46882367
>"I, GARLAND, SHALL MAKE YOU FALL DOWN!"
>>
>>46882231
So, do I shoot the interpreter or the BBEG in the middle of the speech?
>>
>>46882613
That's the point of this encounter.
You clearly see bbeg articulate and use angry gestures.
And she just translates that with cutesy and professional voice.
>>
>>46882231
>The BBEG is a kinda dull speaker, and the interpreter not wanting you guys to feel let down by it all decides to spice up his speech a bit.
>The BBEG can understand your language and notices this, and is secretly thankful
>>
>>46883004
I see. Back in the days of VHS we would get dubbed foreign movies. The dubs were made on the budget, so usually all characters were voiced by single person speaking in apathetic monotonous voice.
Imagine that for an action flick.
Or for porn.
>>
>>46883096
>porn

Just why. Not understanding them is a plus
>>
>>46882231
>BBEG is mute, all speeches are pre-written and read by assistant with strong voice.
>BBEG will become visibly agitated / flustered at any unexpected turn of events that isn't covered by prepared speech
>>
>>46883066
>The BBEG falls prone after the Party's final combination attack
>The interpreter rushes teary eyed to his side
>He whispers something unintelligible into her ear with his last breath
>The interpreter just keeps on bawling as she clutches his lifeless form
>>
>>46882342
the cute terp relays your flirt to the bbeg as is her job.
>it's not like i like you, bard-kun
says the BBEG through the cute terp
>>
>>46883211
Smite evil on her.
>>
>>46882367
Better than an interpreter who "localizes" the ominous monologue by cramming it full of memes and removing any actual emotion from the speech.
>>
>>46883185
And so, we shall go to war!
>>
>>46883239
>It has no effect, and Smite Evil is used up for the day
>>
>>46882555
She's not the BBEG, she's a lich. Gosh, it's little wonder you need an interpreter, reading like that. Although realistically, being infinite, her time has no value so she'll surely cut you a good rate.
>>
>>46883211
>She manages to pull herself together enough to pass on his final words
>"Do as you wish with my corpse, but please leave the castle staff with their lives."
>>
>>46883403
Call GM on bullshit. Cite nazi officers working in concentration camps couldn't possibly be evil, their superiors were evil (following the logic of the current situation).
>>
>>46883695
All she's done is communicate what he's said to the party.
Also why waste a Smite Evil on a noncombatant?
>>
I attack her because she's obviously set up to be waifu bait which can be used to railroad me.
>>
>>46883507
>what he actually said is "don't think you have won fools, my case will live on until even one of my minions is standing"
>>
>>46883725
But anon, if GM expected you would attack such waifu bait, aren't you getting yourself railroaded by attacking here?
>>
>>46883725
Isn't that metagaming?
>>
>>46883723
She is still working for a decidedly evil organization, thus she is supporting their endeavors and can be charged with multiple offenses. Look up modern nazi war crime trial strategy.
>>
>>46883799
That's a good point. I'll make it my goal to hold hands and marry her. Bet the GM won't anticipate that!
>>
>>46883935
We don't really know wether the BBEG in question is a cartoony villain or just someone that ended up opposed to the party due to differing ideals.
>>
>>46883935
Yea, and she's still a waste of a Smite Evil.
>>
>>46884011

Then I let my local law enforcement organization know the GM is a Nazi sympathizer. He'll have to be put on a watch list, and he'll be more careful of his behavior and thoughts in the future. Even if he's not, it's still best for an investigation just to be sure, for my and everyone else's safety.
>>
>>46884018
But my paladin's God is a lawful neutral God of order! Lawyering this way should definitely work in my favor.
>>
>>46883935
Wasn't that just people involved in the Final Solution? It was their actions in conjunction with working for Nazi Germany. An interpreter getting charged with crimes against humanity is a bit silly.
>>
>>46884031
Yea, but you're still wasting a Smite Evil on a first-level Expert.
>>
>>46884029
>He'll have to be put on a watch list,
Where do you live, the Caliphate of Germany?
>>
>>46884066
But if smite evil doesn't work I can't sword her to death or else I'll become a shitty featless fighter while the wizard gets to keep all his powers no matter what he does.
>>
>>46883935
Have you considered that she might be working under coercion?
>>
>>46884029
Where do you live where being a Nazi sympathizer is illegal? Also this isn't necessarily Godwin's law but this damn close.
>>
>>46884083
Then get the wizard to do it, or just arrest her and hand her off to the Inquisition or something.
>>
>>46884029
Then you end up in a ditch with a bullet in the bak of your head.

It's, you know. Best for everyone.
>>
>>46884083
Then have the GM fluff yourself as a spellsword, swordsage, or gestalt fighter/cleric.
>>
>>46884071
>>46884092

Yes, actually. About a hundred and ten kilometers east of Stuttgart. I won't disrupt the thread anymore, but anything that could imply Nazi behavior should be reported.

>>
>>46884257

>>
>>46884257
>Yes, actually.
My condolences.
>>
Good thing I'm the CN rogue. After we interrogate her I'll stab her and throw her out (read: through) a window. The party will agree that she was thrown out of the window by the BBEG during the fight and we found out all that information from scrolls in the BBEG's self-destruct enchanted study.

But... I don't need to understand what the BBEG is planning

If he's in the same room as me, trying to monologue he's buying time, isn't he?

I mean, call me crazy but I think we should just kill them.
>>
>>46887123
Obviously if he's monologuing he's in a position where you can't easily attack him. That would be silly if he just stood there in the same room with you. Besides he already executed a crucial piece of his plan 35 minutes ago.
>>

>>
>>46888312
I'd say 400, maybe 500. There's a lot of demand for a good interpreter.
>>
>>46888234
Oh well. I loot her corpse before BBEG can react. Those are some nice tights.
>>
>>46888351
I was thinking 7000gp as the high figure and 100gp as the low figure.
Taking the average of them (via logarithms) gives me a price of 836gp
Which I'd say is about right.

This assumes you're getting the ENTIRE Narrator, including her sweetness and perkiness, not just her interpretation.

Of course, all of this relies on Rule 0, that the GM doesn't just fiat and say we CAN'T loot the interpreter and sell her to the ransom broker (or allow a player to forefeit 840g of their loot to the pool, and keep the interpreter).
I mean I trust the GM
but he's pulled bullshit fiat out of his ass for less, ya know.
>>
>>46888435

Idioms are great. Like the time somebody in Obama's administration called Netanyahu chickenshit, and the entire nation of Israel spent roughly a week buried in English-Hebrew dictionaries trying to figure out what it meant.

Or when Khrushchev said that he will "show us Kuzma's mother," which apparently actually means something in Russian but caused four different translators to have fatal aneurysms on the spot as they tried to relay the meaning of the sentence.
>>
>>46883244
BBEG goes on a rant for several minutes that you're pretty sure includes the word for "Dwarf"

Interpreter just says "Redacted due to Localization"
>>

As long as she still does the interpreting thing while being sweet and perky then she could be a Balor in disguise for all I care.
>>
>>46883695
This is why in my campaigns I don't use alignments.
If there's some "Protection from x" or "Smite y" I ask the player to define what they mean by x or y the first time they use it, and then that's what the spell does.
NPCs have their own idea of what it means. Unless we're having one of those "The DM literally cannot give a shit and throws statblocks at us" at which point their spell is "Protection from players" or "Smite players".

Eichmann's trial remains the greatest work of the natsoc-postminimalist movement. The inescapability of the past combined with the inevitability of death to create a compelling illustration of the human condition.

Although social commentary was rare in that era of natsoc pieces, Eichmann brought his trademark reflections on contemporary politics and culture to his last great performance work. The unoriginality, repetition of catchphrases and lack of real critical thinking he demonstrated was a cutting commentary on not only popular views of the Holocaust but also modern culture as a whole.

How about a game playing as the underlings to the BBEG? His translator, tailor, chef, accountant, librarian, babysitter, fitness instructor, etc. He wants to be good at more then just BBEG stuff and keeps asking you for help between rounds of the heroes showing up to raid the place.

Now you've got me wondering what Dadaist nazi war crimes would look like

>Using shit-tier bandit souls to pay Succubus interpreter

War prisoners are each given a shovel, then led by armed soldiers into a far-away empty fields, stopping, organized into a long line, each with a soldier pointing his gun on his head and asking "no, please act according to what goes through your head, come on, express your inner repressed self, surprise me".

The first to flee is allowed to do so in respect of his exuberant freedom. Other following them are murdered like dogs for lack of originality.

As for those who start to dig their own grave, judgment will be passed on how much of their Id did they managed to infer in their own work. The most perfected holes will be filled with corpses due to rampant academism.

What happens to the first guy to swing his shovel into the head of the soldier pointing the gun at him?

Remarkable expression of the Thanatos contained at the heart of the artist and of the tension in the fabric of society caused by this constant unconscious extroverted autodestruction.

*blam*

Still, it's lacking in execution.

Reminds me of one idea I heard, where the players are minons of an ancient and evil lich. Problem is, the lich has gone senile millenia ago, so it's up to the PCs to manage the Evil Empire, help him find the artefact of doom (that he accidentally misplaced: it's probably behind the sofa again), and maintain the appearance that he's still the terrifying dark overlord people think he is.
>>
>>46899146
Wow, that post-mortem one-liner was fucking brilliant.
>>
>>46899061
clearly he's left unharmed, but any second prisoners is going to get killed

>q; how many can that guy kill with his shovel before his fellow prisoners are killed by guards?
>>
>>46898952
Souls are souls. It's not like they're above posing as dockside whores to steal random sailor's souls, so some bandit souls would be like, I don't know, the equivalent of McDonald's of Taco Smell.

Seconded. I'm still trying to unravel that. Well done, Anon, have you studied this?

What about the soul of a bandit with soul level 99?

Being a translator and being a guard are not equivalent in terms of their involvement in the atrocity. You'll notice that not every single member of the German military or government were tried for crimes against humanity, only those that were actually involved in specific crimes were.

A concentration camp guard is enforcing the captivity of the victims at the concentration camp, which makes them part of that crime, a translator is only involved in translating speech, so unless the speech being translated is considered a crime, or delivery of the message to its particular audience is considered criminal you can't reasonably accuse the translator of doing anything wrong. They may not even be aware of any wrongdoing by their employer at all.

I know you just want to tar every member of an organization with the same brush so you can murderhobo your way through them with your paladin pretending to be righteous, but not every individual in a group necessarily shares the same responsibility and some of them may actually be completely innocent.

>being a liche this results in tounge stealing
>>
>>46899491
>judging individual responsibility on a case by case basis like a rational human being
but anon that's difficult and requires actual mental effort, I'm just going to make thoughtless sweeping generalizations and murder people based on that

that's what the good guy does right?

How do you even determine the value of souls, anyway? Demons value getting their hands on souls of virtuous people, but that's generally because it takes effort to corrupt them, rather than any particular quality of the soul. Is a soul of a king worth more than a commoner? And if bandid souls are succubus equivalent of McDonald's, does that imply that eating them is unhealthy, and eating paladin souls or something is better for you?

Joules

Less unhealthy and more the fact that it's just a cheap, unmemorable meal. Paladins would be better compared to, say, eating at one of those fancy artsy places. Not necessarily the best, but definitely memorable.

It really depends on what the use of souls is.

Nope. You don't get to try and be all noble and shit now, asshole. And I wasn't going to do shit to your staff anyways unless they're evil, too.

Happened in the latest campaign.

Only one of us knew the Admiral's language Only one of us spoke Common but they acted like they didn't so she brought out a slave girl who knew most of the local dialects.

We've spoken to her a few times and because of the language barrier we could discuss things more frankly while the slave girl would diplomaticise what we said and she also gave us a a few secrets as well.

Then we all find out later the Lady Admiral has a small translation stone hidden in an ear.
We were doing the same.

On the upside it seems she is genuine in trying to avoid bloodshed in dealing with us, mostly because she's to busy running her self-proclaimed empire to be bothered with an expensive, violent solution.
