Competitive Modern Magic discussion
>Please do not discuss counterfeits in this thread, it deserves a seperate thread

Not interested in blogposts. Just answer this if you must:
>What is your opinion on Grixis? What Grixis creaturebase is the most potent in the current metagame and why?
>>
I'd like to discuss proxies and the best place to find tourny fooling real looking ones.

Anyone who pays straight up over 1k for a modern deck is a retard. Discuss.
>>
>>46866355
How long until people realize vision isn't that good in modern?
>>
>>46866478
It's very nice in the slower matchups, but the metagame really isn't all that slow right now. It could maybe slot well in the sideboard for these matchups, but your sideboard should have more "Game Over" cards than good cards. AV is weird.
>>
>>46866419
I play with real cards and didn't spend over 1k on a deck. fight me.
>>
>>46866478
Hopefully soon. I was putting of buying a playset for casual and deeply regret it. Modern is just too damn fast right now.
>>
>>46866355
I think grixis is the best control color scheme in modern. I think a density of cheap threats is needed. Angler is best.
>>
>>46866478
I think it's final form will be as either a 2-of in some controlling decks as lategame fuel, or as a 3-4 of in sideboards for control mirror-busters.
>>
Friendly reminder, don't post in here unless you have at least 700 dollars invested in your deck.

Grixis is really good right now. Tons of removal for the aggro matchups, good value engines for the fair matchups and nice options for the combo matchups.

I've seen a list with 4 Snapcasters, 3 Dark-Dwellers, 2 Kalitas and 1 Tasigur and it's pretty darn tough when they're paired with the goodstuff draws like Kommand. Lack of Flip-Jace is unfortunate because the card is pretty fun, but I can understand its omission. It's probably a little too slow with 4 AV.

The only reason someone would care about how much money other people spent on decks is if they lose a lot to decks far out of their paltry price range. Because, you know, they're poor. Like you.

>>What is your opinion on Grixis? What Grixis creaturebase is the most potent in the current metagame and why?
Grixis Control like Chapin built it is a powerful midrange/control deck that is at its best against aggro decks which are weak to spot removal (infect, delver, affinity) and slower combo decks (ad naus, turns). It has the power to grind over BGx and Company decks, but most of its card advatage comes from the graveyard, so it can be shut down by an unanswered Scavenging Ooze.

"Blue Jund" Grixis with Vryn's Prodigy and no counterspells is just that - a bad knock off of real Jund which no one should really be playing.

Something like:
4 Snapcaster
(4 Tar Pit)
3 Angler
2 Tasigur
1 Kalitas
With a Kalitas and a Grave Titan in the side
Is what I would run in Grixis Control.

I blew the shit out of my FNM with a $70 deck. I was murking $1000 decks every other game. It's how your deck is constructed and how good of a player you are. Sideboarding also helps a lot.

>The only reason someone would care about how much money other people spent on decks is if they lose a lot to decks far out of their paltry price range. Because, you know, they're poor.

I can state another reason: don't talk about your budget deck. It means you don't know much about the competitive aspect of the format (and the metagame).

I will no longer reply to your posts because the conversation is over.

PS: My Tarmogoyfs laughed at your post.

What's the list? this is now Budget Modern General. I've been doing pretty well on MTGO with a budget Blue Tron list. I play Scuttling Doom Engine instead of Wurmcoil, no Ugin, Perilous Vault instead of O-Stone, and an extra Platinum Angel to try to compensate for my tiny penis. I did drop the dough for Remands because they're integral. But everything else is < 2 tix per card. Whole thing was probably 50 tix tops. I should probably grab Wurms and Ugin since they've come down a bit lately and I could probably afford 15 bucks of cards.

Guys if I use colorless lands, can I use land cards like evolving wilds to pick them? Also does the mana from things like rogue's passage and foundry of the consuls count?
>>
>>46876889
There's less pressure on WotC to make significant changes to the B&R list every year to make for an interesting PT. It means that the format should be more stable and the only cards likely to get banned now are the truly degenerate ones rather than there being bannings "in the interest of diversity".
>>
>>46876902
Evolving Wilds only searches for basic lands, so it can be used to find a copy of Wastes. Rogue's Passage and Foundry of the Consoles do tap for colourless mana and can be used to cast spells like Thought-Knot Seer,
>>
>>46876902
All lands (aside from dryad arbor) are colourless. Which ones are you talking about?

If you mean ones that just produce colourless, you can only fetch them if they meet the requirements. So for evolving wilds it needs to be a basic land, so basically wastes would be your option.

There's not going to be a price crash because of this announcement. If anything, there are going to fewer price fluctuations because people won't be rushing to buy into new modern cards/decks that show up at the Pro Tour and less erratic bannings mean that established archetypes are less likely to get banned and cause crashes.

>>

>>

Simple rule - if you can haul back home more than you paid for entry, it's competitive. I'm pretty sure FNM meets the criteria.
>>
Guess I'm done with Modern now.

It was a little too good to be true that they'd have a popular format with a large card pool of fun interesting cards without supporting their greedy quarterly releases.

I hope they realize how bad this looks for Eternal Masters.

I'm not even sure what format I will play now if any. I may just sell my collection before it tanks and stick to limited.

I'm not so sure about this. I tested it in Esper Control and found it to be too clunky and vulnerable conpared to Think Twice, and while UWR does want some copies, I'd say 3 is a safer number than 4.
>>
>>46878152
Are you currently considering building modern affinity?
Also there's different legacy types, like an aggro affinity, tezzorator and metalworker
>>
>>46878785
I built modern affinity a copule years ago, when many of the cards were much cheaper (got Ravager for $10 each).

I was interested in turning it into a legacy deck since Modern is shit, and it'll probably be easier and cheaper to make a few changes to a deck I already have than to build a whole new deck.

As for types, I suppose I'd prefer to go for whichever one is closest to modern affinity. I did pick up a set of Tezz before the unbanning, so I might be able to do that too.

What are the chances of more unbans if modern is no longer a pro tour format? Isn't that the reason cards like pod and twin got the ax in the first place?
>>
>>46880290
They are higher. They used to fear unbans because it could ruin the Pro Tour. Now this problem only exists in GPs and stuff. While they will still be scared, the unban chance is higher.
>>
>>46880417
Maybe Jace and blood braid, and more will finally get unbanned.

Just prior to the ban twin was below it's highest point (which was a couple years earlier) and even a few points below affinity.

Not to mention it removed the three decks most likely to have helped against eldrazi; bloom, twin, jund.

It was a odd decision. However without twin in the format they were probably more willing to unban blue cards like visions and sword (I know its not blue per SE, but the combo is). All I hope for is pod to be unbanned. Pod, Jace, and BBE would make modern great.

official rules: Artistic modifications are acceptable in sanctioned tournaments, provided that the modifications do not make the card art unrecognizable, contain substantial strategic advice, or contain offensive images. Artistic modifications also may not obstruct or change the mana cost or name of the card.

The Head Judge is the final authority on acceptable cards for a tournament.

>>46884006
Remember, the judge program is mostly a player-regulated program where its members and recruiters are players themselves. Only at the highest levels is there actual accountability by someone who knows what the fuck they're talking about at Wizards. Lower level judges can be as stupid and retarded as your regular player - just because they passed a test doesn't mean they are capable of being unbiased.

I'm not bashing on judges for not being infallible; they're human too. But the point is that at a lower level they are held to no fucking standards at all - so you get what you get with any group of people.

Judges are not sports referees; kid league referees have to know how to fucking run and play the game - judges don't need to be fucking good at all. Does that make sense? There's knowing the rules; and there's knowing how to play the game.
>>
>>46884859
How do you become a judge? Do you need to pass a skill exam or something, or just randomly pay money, read a book, and pass some shitty multiple choice test?
>>
>>46884633
I've been playing a B/W Deadguy brew that's some blend between D&T and tokens and it's been doing okay
>>
>>46884859
>>46885014
The judge exam actually requires a fairly thorough knowledge of the game rules and interactions. I took the online practice L1 exam and passed, but barely. I got all the rules questions correct, but policy and procedure questions (like how to handle a draw during a single round elimination event, or what type of offense is calling your opponent a faggot and what punitive action is taken) are things I'm not terribly familiar with.

But I've also seen judges make terrible fucking calls. Sometimes they get stretched thin at events and have to run around and quickly resolve issues in multiple games and sometimes give an answer without fully understanding the situation.

TI actually become a judge, you have to take an in person pen and paper exam administered by a level 2 judge. It's a bit of a pain in the ass to schedule and if you don't pass I think there's a cool-down period before you can try to take it again.

Lets look at other formats in terms of amount of attention from wizards and overall health of the format

Standard: most attention, least diverse/interesting

Vintage: went years without attention, format, remained diverse. Format started to get more coverage, 2 restrictions later there is only one deck.

Legacy: minimal bans, minimal attention, most diverse and most fun.

Then modern: wizards has been constantly meddling with it, each time making the format less diverse and less interesting.

So does less attention from wizards spell the end of the format? Or could it mean that Modern might finally get good?
>>
>>46886454

>Legacy
>most diverse

There are two decks: ones that run Force of Will and ones designed to work around them.
