Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you fought a disciple and launched an invasion of R'lyeh.

It is currently the 30th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You shoot a bolt of flame along Zahak's side, the scales on his neck rattling contentedly. {Why don't you help Mahana's servants. Torch the creatures wielding spears. I want to perform a little experiment upon the disciple.}

There's a vague impression of his agreement, and then he leaps into the air. The throne room is large enough that he can freely circle about the ceiling without worrying about colliding with anything, and the hallway wide enough to accommodate his wingspan. You can't help but feel a tinge of pride as your son swoops down upon the enemy, flames leaping from his gaping maw to incinerate his enemies.

With Zahak occupied, you stalk towards Melancholy and his immobilized opponent. Clapping Renaud on the shoulder elicits a hollow metallic clang from his armor, and he jerks his crushed head violently towards you as if expecting some unseen enemy. His perpetual frown has been warped into a comical grimace, making it difficult to get a read on what he's thinking. “Would you allow me a moment? You seem to have this incompetent fool well in hand, and I'd like to test a theory of mine. If you'd be willing to hold him still, of course.”

There's a lengthy pause, before Renaud drives the dagger deeper still into the stone. You can see the very tip of the blade protruding from the back of the flaming orb which serves as the disciple's core. After that, Melancholy merely nods his metallic head, the helmet slowly starting to reshape itself into its original form. You take that as your cue to get started, so while channeling vys you press your hand against the ice of the disciple's arm. Draining the disciple's vys is like sucking water through a narrow straw, but your vys pool is better off for it.

In the interest of expediency you cut your attempts to leech the man's vys short. Taking a seat on the coral floor, you assume a meditative pose and skip the usual process of gathering ambient vys. You only have so much time available, the spirit could return at any moment and you'd like to be ready when it does. Forgoing the process of restoring your depleted husk, you allow yourself to sink into a trance. Becoming sufficiently detached from your mortal form requires more time than you'd necessarily like, but it's necessary for any sort of fine manipulation of the soul.

Something odd catches your attention. The gladiators and tentacle creatures have very strange souls. For one, they don't have a husk and they lack the black stone shell present in most mortals. Their souls consist only of the exposed divine shard. From what little you know of death and the afterlife, there should be nothing preventing Pani or Surya from dragging away their souls for their own respective purposes. You also note their souls are green rather than the usual gold. Renaud and the other disicple also have green souls, which you assume is the result of their respective patrons imbuing them with a part of their own divine essence, but at least they have also have a husk.

You passively wonder if the difference between a disciple and a servant is the ability to self-determine. The servants, lacking husk, ought to also lack memories. If they cannot form memories they're probably little more than puppets given some semblance of consciousness by their patron spirits. It's a disturbing prospect, the idea that Mahana has created a small army of mindless slaves to carry out his bidding, and yet they're presumably able to move freely through the mortal coil without attracting attention.

Channeling Earth magic, you create a blade from your will and begin to carve into the spirit of the rival disciple. Unlike the bandit who you previously dissected, carving through the soul of a disciple is incredibly difficult. You think their souls are, for lack of a better word, denser than the souls of most other mortals. However, the blade jammed into the disciple's core seems to have created a soft spot in its soul through which you're able to work.

Remember what crazy library bitch said, that it was easier to manipulate the world when we're angry as our soul is more agitated? I imagine it's something like that
>>
>>46864867
Yup. Being angry helps us influence reality.
>>
>>46864867
Yup. Active emotion causes or allows more essence to escape the shard of divinity, thus making you better at task involving the soul. So enchantment, and certain forms of meditation.
>>
>>46864830
Hey Soma, would it be possible to use the shaping arts to relive memories and re-experience the emotions during them in order to prime ourself for finalization rolls?
>>
>>46864913
And we're only getting this bonus for the first time now, because...?
>>
>>46864933
Who knows~
From what Mik's experienced thus far, emotion seems dulled when viewed through the Shaping Arts. Perhaps this would not be the case with more recent memories, or with more emotionally charged memories, but that's mere speculation.
>>
>>46864947
Mik's not a particularly emotional guy, Anon.
>>

Ain't nobody messing with Zahak.
>>
>>46864947
We have literally only finalized enchantments 3 times ever, and every single time we did so we were in a normal state of mind. Other soul related rolls we've done: gate meditation, shaping arts meditation(?), closing the void rift, dissecting a bandit's soul. None of these were emotionally charged moments worthy of the bonus. Please inform me of any soul-related meditations we've performed aside from these
>>

imprisoning the spirit, I think?
>>
>>46865066

>>
>>46865092
Getting bodysnatched by a horrorshow doesn't count as something to get you emotionally charged?
>>
>>46865151
Soma does describe the desperation in the flashback, but I think we were more confused initially and then detached as we eroded away our memories.
>>
>>46865013
Also missed the roll to reinforce the shell around our DE, after which Mortia gave us the soul restoration potion. Incidentally we should ask her to brew up a ton of that so that if we need to use a huge amount of our husk in a fight we can drink it to recover. We'd probably be out of the fight after we did that, but it'd be better than being a danger to our allies because we can't remember them.
>>
Difficult though it may be to work your way through the disciple's husk, you get the sense that your armor is helping you along. It seems to supplement the vys you channel with the ambient vys it constantly floods into your reserves, lending your spells significantly more weight than they'd have otherwise. It also doesn't hurt that you're not trying to be perfect here. In fact, you're hacking away at this bastard's soul with wild abandon. His patron hurt your son, and in some small way this allows you to get back at the spirit.

Working through the weakened area created by Melancholy's dagger, you sheer away an immense chunk of the disciples soul. This serves to reveal the black shell beneath, which is absolutely ridden with holes. You're surprised it's holding together at all, some of the strands connecting its disparate elements are as thin as cobwebs. Within the shell sits his divine shard, but also something else. A small, blue fragment of essence orbits around the golden shard of divinity which lends him sentience.

You suppose this sliver of essence is what constitutes the spirit's presence. Odd to think that it's not actually bound to the divine shard, but merely contained within the shell alongside it. That is not the case for the servants battling in the hall, their shards are properly green, rather than being separated into blue and gold elements. Part of you wants to separate the spirits' essence from the disciple's soul, but you've never actually worked with the shard of divinity directly. Only with the husk and the shell.

(1/2)
>>
Channeling Vys, you pull the separated portion of the disciple's husk towards you. You would guess that you've seized roughly a third its substance, and his husk is far larger than your own. You could simply force it into your pistol, which you had the foresight to place on the ground before you rather than resting it in your lap, but you worry that forcing so much of the husk into a receptacle not designed to contain it may damage your pistol.

Thus, you thought to use the disciple's husk to reinforce your pistol. You thought the process might be similar to casting from ambient vys, but now it occurs to you that when casting from ambient vys you first bind it to your reserves. The idea of joining this man's husk to your own sets you ill at ease. What if you're forced to absorb some of his memories? What if it changes who you are, and your personality? More than that, this man was presumably a human, or perhaps an elf. Do you really wish to contaminate your soul by mingling its essence with that of a lesser race?

>Try to bind this portion of his husk to your own, and then channel it into the pistol.
>Perhaps this was unwise. Reinforce the pistol with the substance of your own soul, and then use the disciple's merely to charge the weapon.

Since the husk of one's soul determines their max vys, does this binding temporarily increase our max vys? This is just semantics really but I think it would be cool. It shouldn't influence how much we can spend on a roll though based on how temporary changes to max vys work.
>>
>>46865935
Oh shit.

We could seriously get important shit if we could pull this off successfully. And with these sort of bonuses we probably could.
>>
>>46866005
Well it would only increase our max vys for a moment until we remove it and reinforce the pistol with it.
>>
>>46865935
>>46866008
When we erode our husk though, our memories come back with time. That means that any memories we gain would probably only be temporary. That said, it could still be useful to borrow knowledge from someone until that knowledge gets eroded away naturally.

Okay, so when you mix a spirit's shard with a mortal's, you get a mindless drone the spirit can control from his master shard. But what happens when you mix a small mortal shard into a spirit's main shard? Or what if the mortal shards are abundant enough to overcome the spirit's tendency to dominate, so that the green has far more yellow than blue? Does the spirit become more human, or does it always retain dominance by virtue of its innate properties?

Furthermore, if Dragons and Voibardians, as born from the gods directly, have red shards, and mortals have yellow, and spirits have blue, does that happen due to a representation of the nature of the being via the spectrum?

Does it mean void beings are even further down the spectrum, being ultraviolet and therefore imperceptible to mortals because of how much they differ from them?

What happens if you mix a dragon and a spirit? Do you get a mortal? What of other combinations, like human and dragon? Are the gods in the infrared?

What happens when you forcibly mix shards of the same color? If you combine the shards of ten people, do you get an insane person with the vys pool of a century-old dragon?

Souls lose memories after they die. If we combine the shards of the recently deceased like that kid we Jesus'd, would that create a coherent entity? After all, there must be a problem with mixing shards, since the Mahatma is designed to keep them separate, and you can't tell me the Hiacians didn't experiment around with that shit. You all know how Samjan vatis get as they age.

We have access to human souls, and a spirit soul in our pocket. We're obviously not touching Zahak, but we might eventually imprison a dragon. So because of that, and also because of my long list of mental deficiencies, I thought I'd just throw these out there.

...Now, someone just needs to read all that.

Greater Spirits like Mahana, Atma, and the Water Spirit tend to appear as blindingly bright white outlines of their actual forms. There's not just a focused single area around a shard, their entire body is composed of essence.
>>
>>46866300
yeah, but what color is it? yellow is samjan, blue is detached from the original, dragons are presumably red (the husk reflects the shard, as seen in disciples, Regulus, and Skull Kid), void is an absence of light, so what about its color?
>>
>>46866394
The colors dont really matter.

You're focusing on the wrong thing.
>>
>>46866370
Does Divine Essence regenerate, or do spirits have a finite, non-replenishable supply of power? Can they even manipulate husk or vys?
>>
>>46866322
>>
>>46866457
We know that the destruction of the detached blue infused into a disciple's soul would be a permanent loss of strength for the associated spirit.
>>
>>46866537
it would kill him.
>>
>>46866500
Now that's a plan I can get behind. You should post it every thread.
>>
>>46866457
In Spirits, Divine Essence does not regenerate. They restore themselves by consuming lesser spirits. Only the Gods are capable of creating new divine essence. However, Divine Essence also cannot be destroyed. When a spirit is made to bleed, their essence degrades rapidly into vys. If a spirit bleeds enough, it will lose the consistency of its form and be reduced to a minor spirit. However, they can never bleed away all of their essence.

Thus, a spirit can only truly die when it is absorbed by a greater spirit.

Spirits can manipulate both husk and vys, but a spirit only has husk in its outermost layer. You can think of the husk as their skin, and beneath that is their essence. Thus, manipulating the husk to any large degree would require bleeding some of their essence, which is undesirable.

I'm not sure I exactly understand what you mean. Is the degradation from essence to vys an irreversible process? Wouldn't that then be the destruction of divine essence?

Elaudia would've been hard at the start of the quest, not for an almost-double grandmaster riding a dragon.

>we just steamroll or crawlroll through everything as long as we have vys
Untrue. We have gotten into situations with a non negligible chance of failure. In fact, certain rolls could have ended the quest on the spot
Eg
Chryssa's GM meditation
The crown
The child encounter in the void
The mines of Longia (actually we incurred an as of yet unpaid debt to not die, so luck and vys didn't even save us from this situation)

Additionally, though it seems that our combat is unfailable, that is often because of techniques that we have incidentally picked up as a result of our study, and then usually because we decided to use those techniques in a dangerous way. Consider our first use of napalm against. It was against horrorbeasts that we seemingly had know good way to kill. We actually went into that encounter without obvious tools and used the untested battle meditation technique to learn the theoretical liquid fire technique in order to destroy the monsters.
Consider also the fight against profectus, which was only won without significant losses because of our decision to brooch Darzi, something that was not provided as a default option. Profectus was guaranteed to die at the time of that roll without intervention that was not available through options given by Soma.
>>
>>46866945

Niggas. The Spice incident with Prof was literally not too long ago and the odds were that we die there.

Skin of our teeth man.
>>
>>46866742
Just as no matter is lost due to radioactive decay, no divine essence is lost when it decays into vys. In fact, divine essence is the only reason that vys is able to effect the strings which bind reality. So when a spirit bleeds essence, some of it is siphoned off by the Gods to be recycled or absorbed, much like the souls of mortals after their death, siphoned off to be recycled by the gods. The rest simply remains within the base reality, or within one of the two hundred sixteen outer layers.

Based on what Mik knows of the afterlife, Surya also acts as something of a 'heat sink', in that he drains away as much loose divine essence as he can in the hopes of finally escaping from underneath Pani's boot heel.
>>
>>46866994
We were just too stupid to use the cloak then

>I only want Soma to not hold back is all.
But anon, Soma literally can't stop giving us tangential plothooks, each fraught with their own random dangers. That enchantress lady in her pocket reality, for example, could have been a dangerous fight that would probably have killed us. We chose to handle that encounter by using our negotiation skills to leave and then building a wall around her door to prevent people from leaving.
>>
>>46867066
Fortunately now it is to Elaudia, and I hope well that's fine too.

We know that Namek is part of our reality, at least somewhere in the 216 layers because of multiple things. The most obvious of which are our ability to communicate with Demetrios through the brooches and the portal entity's knowledge of the void.
>>
Tbh the only reason people say it's too easy is that Mik is a water GM so he can simply heal himself as long as he's not dead.

If the level of difficulty increased, we would die pretty soon. The ideal of "good decisions, good results, and also the opposite" is all good and well, but the audience is too big, the writer is too callous to throw shitfits about it, and, oh yeah, we're on fucking 4chan.

Well, you'll set aside your reservations for the moment. You have more pressing concerns than the purity of your soul. Acting largely on instinct, you draw the chunk of the disciple's husk into yourself. There is immense resistance as it draws closer and closer to your own golden soul, and several times the disciple's husk slides right off the outer layer of your own soul. However, after much trial and tribulation, you're finally able to make some sort of connection to the disciple's husk.
>Vys Pool: (49/[79])

You taste citrus on your lips, and are momentarily overcome by the smell of saltwater. However, you feel few effects other than these vague sensory impressions. Siphoning off this portion of your husk still very much identified as foreign, you begin to slowly force it into your pistol. You can feel the threads which bind reality are increasingly strained by the burden of your pistol. Previously it had been only a vague blue impression at the edge of your consciousness, but by the time you've finished it's blindingly white, much like the form of a spirit when viewed from a deep trance.
>Vys Pool: (49/[55])

That finished, you carve away the rest of the disciple's husk. It's a simple process, now that you've created an initial opening. You manage to flay the rest of the disciple's soul, leaving his shell laid bare for all the world. It looks as though the slightest of effort on your part would be enough to shatter the thin net of stone stretched around his twin shards, but you would rather spare yourself the exertion.

He's useless. It's his general attitude towards life, an Mik especially, that makes him worth keeping around.

He could potentially become useful if we bother to spend a few meditations on unfucking up his arm, but that involves enchantment and doing something that doesn't involve granting Mik more personal power, so we probably never will.

>>46868143
Fulvia is the opposite: Great for combat, utility, everything, but personality-wise has been a complete non-entity since we last entered her (hue) and entered that chained up door. She could become great if we reentered her (hue hue) and removed some of the limiters on her, but that also would involve a couple threads.

But it would be solo and spiritey bullshit, which I and other anons seem to enjoy, so maybe? Who knows?

Cramming the green mass of the disciple's husk into your pistol proves a more difficult task than you'd initially anticipated. The world protest against such abuse, a quiet, high-pitched hum seeming to fill the air as the pistol glows brighter and brighter. Frankly, you're a little worried to actually shoot the thing. What if it collapses this reality in upon itself, with you trapped inside? Were would that place you? Would you simply appear in the middle of the ocean surrounded by corpses, or perhaps would you be counted among the dead?

Regardless, you finish packing the last of the disciple's husk into the ancient pistol and begin to withdraw from your trance. When your eyes snap open, you sit beside Melancholy, with Zahak feasting upon the grey flesh of one of the water spirit's tentacled servants near-by. You see no sign of Mahana's own servants, though his minions are streaming with some regularity through the portal behind you. The disciple is clearly unconscious, slumped over against Melancholy's blade lifelessly.

Your pistol is a strange thing. Bubbles of nonexistence seem to blossom around its barrel, only to pop as reality reasserts itself. Looking at it just feels wrong, as though you're staring at something which ought not to exist, and holding it is even worse. It sends an electric shock running up the length of your arm, a sensation like needles digging into your skin growing worse for every second you hold the now charged weapon.

As you begin to stir, Renaud jerks is blade free, shoving the body of the disciple onto the floor. Its core is shattered with a single, triumphant swing from his halberd. The disciple is dead, and his corpse lies still on the coral floor next to you. Oddly, the fragments of the stone core slowly begin to lose their firmness, instead becoming almost as soft as wet clay. Mahana's disciple offers you a hand up once he's assured himself that his rival is dead, an offer which you accept.

He says nothing to you, though to be fair you're not wholly certain he can talk. The other one, Clarisse, hadn't said a word to you after you entered the spirit realm. This realization brings about another, you don't think you've ever encountered a disciple that said a single word within the realm of its patron. At least, not that you can recall. You don't think the two disciples of that spirit who occupied Anthus prior to your launching of an invasion said anything to you, and the carapace-garbed knight certainly didn't.

Odd. Why would disciples be rendered incapable of speech within the realm of their patrons?

You're distracted from your absentminded contemplation by the earth beginning to quake, flecks of coral falling from the ceiling as something immense lands upon the landscape. You don't need to channel Nature magic to know that the spirit has returned, its presence can be felt across every inch of this place, the immensity of his power enough to give you pause.

It's only a few moments later that Mahana comes striding through the portal you created for him. He seems to have healed the wound upon his side at some point, and he bows his leonine head to you in greeting. {Mikhael.} His voice rumbles through your thoughts, practically a purr. {I would urge caution, in his desperation my rival has resorted to using his essence directly. Here, in his realm, he will hold a distinct advantage.}

{Surely he must be holding on by mere threads, if he is using that which gives him life to fuel his aggression.} The boar spirit which serves Mahana passes its immense bulk through the portal, momentarily distracting you. It suffered a terrible wound across its flank, which is only slowly beginning to repair itself. {Strike a decisive blow now, and the battle will be won.}

The Cat takes a seat by the portal as a veritable army of his servants, both the humanoid constructions of stone and fire and the tiny, almost ferret-like forms of his weaker minions, begin to stream into this realm. {I am afraid it will not be so simple. He has consumed one of his vassals, and through this restored himself. I am much of our work has been undone. However, with the loss of a disciple and the majority of both his servants and minions, I believe we will be able to win a war of attrition.}

>You didn't charge this pistol for nothing. Hunt down the giant bastard that hurt your son and make him fear mortal might.
We have this nuke sitting around and it would be a massive shame to not see what happens. Might want to mention this to Mahana though.

Should we be worried?

SO THEY CANNOT SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OF THE GODS

Supporting this. It's better to ask the fucking cat.

>hunt the creature down.

also explain to Mahana what you had done with the pistol and the disciples soul.

I just want to read about the creatures expression when we explain to him we literally ripped out a dudes soul and compressed it into a bullet to fire at his master.

also maybe explain to him how we were banished from Surya's embrace because we figured out how to bring the dead back to life, if only the recently dead.
>>
>>46868432
Probably. I want to fire the thing anyways.

I'm sure he won't turn on us after hearing that.

Also, I'm kind of worried about the gun going off and killing us when we fire. Can we distract the creature by flying around with Zahak, and then use manipulate to move the pistol into point blank range of the Water spirit and firing?

Might be a good idea to mention the soul and gun thing to the cat first, just in case it can collapse reality and kill us.

I wonder if it's based on the assertion that medieval humans are supposedly shorter than modern ones.

Pfft, planning and common sense. Let's blow this mother and ride the explosion.
