>check for traps, ambushers, cursed items, and so on and so on everywhere, expending divinations to help out too
>"You find nothing."
>at one point, neglect to declare being paranoid and searching everything
>"You spring a trap. You should have declared you were searching."
What is the appeal of dungeon crawling again?

nice thread

>Hire burly NPC to go with the party for a cut
>Almost always dies through being trap bait
>Spell slots and tools 100% intact and ready for boss fight
And nothing of value was lost.

Challenging the players. It is a game after all.

You should try out morale rules, fampai
>>46812800
How is that immoral?
They told the guy that he would be going with them to a dungeon where there is a 100% chance of danger. He knows what he is going to do and he is being paid for it. It is not like they tricked him.

Using an NPC as a human mineclearer should give them a morale penalty and make it more difficult to get hirelings in the future
>>46812888
Morale, not moral. A cohort whose purpose is "trap bait" isn't going to have very good loyalty or willingness to carry on.
colette, pls go
>check for traps
>one of your party members is a trap

Our party is usually a group of ranged type classes, barely any of us in our group likes being a melee-based martial class so we usually go this route. We are always up front about the dangers of a dungeon, that it can lead to almost certain death etc., but that we were given this order by (enter prominent name here) and that they too can get a cut of the treasure and glory by coming along.
It doesn't always work, and the NPC doesn't always die, but we never lie about anything.

What if the hired muscle doesn't make it out alive and no one finds out about the people they are baiting into dungeoncrawling?
>>46812932
What if the hireling has more loyalty than one would expect from a hired gun?

News gets around. When his mates at the tavern realize that Gastor didn't come back after leaving with the Human, half-beast, robot, and demon-blood, others will come to realize the group is bad news.
The party isn't the only group of people moving between towns.

I would expect there to be some sort of plot hook about some master plan.
