I know there's a big OSR community for D&D. But are there "OSR communities" for games other than D&D?

Like, are there dudes out there making retroclones of Shadowrun 1E or TMNT or mid-90s Vampire or something?

Does that happen?

I've been wracking my brain trying to think of any examples, but all I can come up with is D&D.

There MIGHT be an OSR Traveller clone, but I can't remember if I just dreamed that or not.
>>
>>46801959
Traveller's already so retro it doesn't need any clones.

I mean, it has the cloning tech but not the nostalgia need. Well, okay, you can synthesize nostalgia with some pheromonal substances..., fuck, you know what I'm trying to say.
>>
>>46800630
I think there's a certain critical mass you need in order to really be a community. I'm sure there are people out there house-ruling and homebrewing shit for other old school games, but I don't know that there's the same sort of feedback loop you have with the retroclone community, where OSR folks inspire each other and build on each others works. I cut my teeth on old school games (at a time when they weren't old), and so my base-level thinking tends to be rooted in them. I've done hombrew stuff for Gamma World going back to 2nd and 3rd edition, and I've toyed around with Star Frontiers some, because I love the setting but not so much the mechanics (though I can't quite seem to come up with satisfactory alterations that are essentially compatible with--or easily convertible from--the existing stats).

But D&D is unique in a few ways. The size of its following is important, but so is the fact of how radically it's changed. The OSR movement probably wouldn't be a thing if 3e hadn't abruptly turned things on their head. And it's not only the big changes going into 3e, then 4e, then 5e, but the fact that all the stuff before 3e is essentially cross-compatible. So you have a quarter century of play in the highest profile RPG in existence reacting to a radical change in not only mechanics but play philosophy. Try finding that with another game.

The Fantasy Trip sort of has one. Dark City Games, Heroes & Other Worlds, the WIP Blades & Black Magic, for example.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was also one for WHFRP.
>>
What other editions might have a market for people who are disgruntled enough with the new edition of a popular game to make an old version to satisfy a play experience they feel has disappeared?

I guess you could say that 13th Age was a retro-clone of D&D 4E and PF a retroclone of 3.5E, but outside of D&D there doesn't seem to be enough nostalgia or player base to support retroclones.

With that said, I've thought having an occasional non-D&D old school game thread might be interested. The tricky thing would be that unlike D&D OSR, the discussions about different games would essentially be separate, making it difficult to sustain things (or even get some conversations going). With that in mind, the threads would probably have to only be an occasional thing, and should probably focus on a particular game (while welcoming discussion on others as well). Hell, you might even advertise what the next week's game topic would be so that folks who liked that game would be sure to tune in.

Star Frontiers and old Gamma World still get love. Not much of it but it's there.

I really like Heroes & Other Worlds. Especially the Raedwald setting book.

This PDF contains a quickstart.

I'm trying to think of all the shit I played in the old days that isn't D&D.

In decending order of play:
Gamma World 2e and 3e
Star Frontiers
Paranoia 1e and 2e
TMNT
Doctor Who (FASA)
Ghostbusters
Lords of Creation (a very little bit)

Uh... I know there's other shit I'm forgotten (other than my homebrew stuff like Aliens, which was a sort of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ripoff).

Maybe, though /tg/ in general is more of a Game of the Month board than a place where lovers of old games congregate (as they do on places like Dragonsfoot and G+). Might work, there's a regular OSR thread up here though.

>>46803004
My old-school games were:

TMNT
After the Bomb
TORG
Rifts
Shadowrun 1e
Cyberpunk 2020
Talislanta

and Call of Cthulhu, but, uhh, it's still old-school since the rules haven't really changed in 35 years.
>>
>>46803087
I feel like with the OSR thread, you'd be drowned out by D&D and and having a non-D&D old school thread ("classic gaming"?) you'd have a greater chance to keep the thread alive than if you just started one about Star Frontiers or something.

>Cyberpunk 2020
I've definitely played some of that, though for me that's starting not to be as old school anymore. Still, it should probably go on the list (crappy as my experience with it was). Also, thought of some other stuff...

Cyberpunk 2020
Stormbringer
Call of Cthulhu
Runequest
Champions
Traveller

On a tangent, it's weird how a lot of people these days don't know who Max Headroom is. That shit was huge back in the day. He had a movie, a couple of TV shows, a music video, a video game, and the Coke commercials. I can't see Matt Frewer without thinking "that's Max Headroom!"

Tft is my favourite system, i could keep 3 d6 and some scrap paper in my pocket and be able to teach and dm it to people, coming from number heavy, equation based gaming systems, i found it to be greatly complex for the base simplicity, especially when your trying to lure new non pnp players, they can have a character and be playing in 5 minutes.

i wonder if i can find the text document for my Fallout pnp tft conversion? which is, fallout the video game, is based on early gurps rules. the history of tft is quite a fun read, from the evolution of being a simple melee skirmish game that came in bag to make it afforadable compared to red box dnd, to making a wizard version to finally saying fuck it and making rules for adventuring.

The Hollow World setting was apparently for Basic D&D. I don't really have anything to contribute other than to say that I love the idea of hollow Earth settings.

West End Star Wars is making a comeback. I don't know why. It's not a great system, and Jedi were intentionally overpowered to the point of it being caster edition.
>>
>>46800630
Not as much, because basically the OSR community is made of hipsters and grognards nostalgic for the bygone eras of adversarial GMing, and needing to look up charts for everything.
Needless to say, I view these people the same way secularists in the middle east view ISIS.

>>46805709
The D&D OSR is amazingly schizophrenic

>the OSR is for REAL GAMERS who aren't afriad of character death not WEEBS and WANNABE STAGE ACTORS

>the OSR is for REAL ROLEPLAYERS who care about storytelling not ROLLPLAYERS and RULES LAWYERS

>the OSR is for LATERAL THINKERS who care about solving puzzles not RETARDS and CAWODOOTY BABBIES

And when someone tells them they should try something other than D&D they sperg out about how other games aren't REALLY oldschool when they're over 30 years old.
>>
>>46806373
Yeah, and then you ignore those guys completely and hang out with the osr dudes who are actually fun.
>>
>>46806373
It's not surprising that different people have different points of view on something and that some of them are assholes. If you check out the OSR threads here though, they tend to be some of the chillest, most reasonable ones around.

TSR Marvel has FASERIP over on DTRPG. The guy who wrote it wrote Dark Dungeons, the RC clone.

WHFRP is getting a retroclone called Zweihander that totters along at a geriatric pace, but might be completed sometime next year. Maybe. If you're an optimist.

Gamma World 1e has Mutant Future, but it's not quite the same. I want a cleaned up clone of 3rd or 4th edition Gamma World myself. Probably going to have to write it and we all know /tg/ never gets things done.

Exalted got Qwixalted, which I guess is a retroclone? More in line with the 2nd generation of OSR games (the ones that came after everyone and their monkey-butlers jammed out "Swords and Wizardry White Box With My Houserules Baked In" editions.

I don't see how any of those things you mentioned are contradictory.

FASERIP is the name of the game, a nod to the fact that Marvel Superheroic Roleplaying's 7 stats spelled FASE RIP.

DTRPG Drivethru RPG. You should know this one senpai.
