hey
i suddenly decided to join the x-wing tourney at my lgs this saturday and i ordered the 2 core sets which i will pick up today.
gonna read through everything in it and i was wondering since i dont have that much time, what are the current top tier lists?
i am planning on trading in my full mtg schockland set for store credit for x-wing stuff.

is the 8 tie fighter list still valid ?

the first drug are more like stocks. the second i will actually use.
also the price limit on x-wing isnt that high, you cant actually spend much more then 200-300 bucks on it.

The new list to beat is triple JumpMaster 5000s.
The basic list is three of the same ship -
>Contracted Scout (JumpMaster 5000)
>Plasma Torpedoes
>Extra Munitions
>Guidance Chips
>R4 Agromech
>Deadeye
That's the basic list, and it gets tweaked from there. There's lots of strong cheap crew that can be added on to make the list play differently, and I've often seen one of the JumpMasters reduced in price a bit to run less ordnance and get outfitted for aggressively blocking opponents manoeuvres instead.
But the problem is that it's a fairly upgrade-heavy list and they're all pretty essential parts of how it works. You're looking at buying three JumpMasters, three K-Wings or TIE Punishers in combination for the Extra Munitions and three A-Wings or TIE Advanced Prototypes in combination for the Deadeyes.
The real top tier list at the moment is Palp Aces, but that needs Palpatine from the Raider kit to be run and I'm going to guess you're not looking at dropping that kind of money right off the bat.

TIE Fighter swarms have gotten a new lease on life with a couple of great new options lately. Youngster lets nearby TIEs share any actions on his Elite talent card, giving massive offensive potential with the Rage EPT, but his card is only available through the Gozanti Carrier box.
The Blackcrack swarm is also strong, with a pack of Black Squadron TIEs all equipped with the Crack Shot EPT to boost their offensive potential. But again it's awkward to assemble given the number of Crack Shot cards you need.

are the ties and x-wings in the 2 core sets different from eachother?
the jumpmaster looks like a really cool ship but it might be a bit to expensive to buy 12 models right at the start.
what would be a good list for the core sets? i am willing to buy at least 5 packs minimum.
>>46789328
>Raider kit
mmm, it looks like a cool ship so maaaaaybe.
whats the list ?

There's a good tool called "Han Shopped First" that you can use to input a list and it will tell you what the cheapest way to buy that list is.
http://randolphw.github.io/han-shopped-first/
You need a list builder that will export in the right format - I usually use (Yet Another) Squad Builder
http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/
As for cheaper lists, nothing is springing to mind as "This is a top tier competitive list that you can buy in very few expansions", but at the same time, the way you fly a list matters a lot more than what's in it. You can't go too wrong with deciding on a faction, buying some ships that look cool and then making the best list you can with what you have on hand.
The Palp Aces list these days is usually some variation of
>Omicron Group Pilot (Lamba Shuttle)
>Emperor Palpatine
>Omega Leader (TIE/fo Fighter)
>Juke
>Comms Relay
>Wampa
Plus a fourth ship, generally either Darth Vader or The Inquisitor.
Palpatine offers you a massive advantage while he's on the board, literally changing the rules in your favour. Omega Leader is just one of the most points-efficient ships in the game currently, able to go one-on-one with just about any ship out there. In larger dogfights he's not quite so golden, but in a duel he really shines.
Wampa is a wonderful game piece with Palpatine on the board, letting you just force through hits to any slippery target you want.
The fourth ship will generally be a solid, competent ace. Vader and the Inquisitor are obvious choices because they can be oufitted a little more cheaply than Soontir Fel or a Phantom. Carnor Jax is a reasonable black horse to bet on though.

so many upgrades to look at.
i was thinking of using the 4 tie fighters from the core set and just buy some stuff that fits with them.
maybe imperial aces
>>46789654
The one thing I would tell you to definitely purchase if you're looking at flying Imperial is a standalone TIE/fo expansion.
You get some new pilots for the ship and Omega Leader is just one of the best pilots out there at the moment. Plus, he comes with all the upgrades you need to run him effectively straight out of the box. Juke + Comms Relay, throw him in literally any list and he'll perform.
Beyond that, Imperial Aces is good but you'll want to get a StarViper Expansion at some point for the Autothrusters card, and probably a standalone Interceptor for the Soontir Fel pilot (Though Carnor Jax is perfectly competent.)
Bombers and Defenders are both a bit second rate at the moment but will become amazing once Imperial Veterans drops (June-ish, maybe? FFG's release schedules are whack.)
A TIE Fighter expansion wouldn't hurt at all if you're interested in running a swarm-style list, there are some relevant cards for that but not really otherwise.
TIE Phantoms are fun ships but upgrade-dependant
The TIE Adv Prototype is a great little ship that you should grab at some point after Imperial Veterans.

this game is hard to craft a list for when you start out.
i guess il drop the idea of running a top tier list at the tourney for now. it seems like those are a little bit pay to win with all the amazing cards locked behind 100 buck ships.
>>46789801
It's not terrible - I was listening to a podcast recently where they spoke about a guy cleaning up a store championship with nothing but Dark Curse and 7 Academy Pilots. That's four core sets and nothing else.
Like I said, it's more about how you fly than what you fly. Efficient generics are always good, it's just that the 'Ace' builds often want lots of different pieces from different expansions to really run.
>>46789852
yeah so i am looking at the best way to make a swarmy list.
but i cant use academy pilots on tie/fo fighters can i ?
il probably buy the standar tie/fo and tie fighter plus the star viper. and search what else i should get.
>>46789884
Yeah the TIE/fo is a different ship to the TIE Fighter, but there's no reason you can't fly them alongside each other.
Hold off on the StarViper until you've got Imperial Aces, that's the real place to be playing Autothrusters.
Something like
>"Howlrunner" (TIE Fighter)
>Obsidian Squadron Pilot (TIE Fighter)
>Obsidian Squadron Pilot (TIE Fighter)
>"Omega Leader" (TIE/fo Fighter)
>Juke
>Comms Relay
>Epsilon Squadron Pilot (TIE/fo Fighter)
>Epsilon Squadron Pilot (TIE/fo Fighter)
Should perform fairly well, and only needs the two expansions beyond what you have already (TIE Fighter and TIE/fo). Just try and put aside some time to get some practice with the list beforehand, because handling a swarm can look a lot like bumper cars if you don't know where your ships are going to go.
>>46789654
The Decimator is a fairly self contained ship you can run a few different ways straight out the box. Oicunn and the rear admiral both being good.
A lot of ships can't be flown in a top tier way without the upgrades a large collection/buying singles. People do tend to accumulate duplicates though, people in the community may well be willing to lend cards to a noob, particularly if your already know in the area.
Fly casual
>>46790001
seems like a fun list what are upgrade options for it?
>>46789379
>are the ties and x-wings in the 2 core sets different from eachother?
Yes. The T-70 is better in basically every way.
Sadly, the good old T-65 X-Wing is in a really bad place right now. She's a touch overcosted for what you get, has no repositioning options, and is just plain less points efficient than the T-70. Certain Aces are still viable, but generally a T-70 is just more bang for your points, and Poe is just plain old fucking NASTY, making him a big contender when you're picking your "centerpiece" ace, especially combined with R2 for utterly DEGENERATE levels of regen.
>>46790001
so far i now have the 2 core sets and a tie fighter expansion, gonna read up and see what i want to add to that, il buy the rest i need on the day of the tourny this saturday.
store people said tie/fo's are kinda bad compared to just running cheap ties.
>>46793701
whats the difference between an acedamy tie fighter and an obsidian tie fighter ?
