So a Dark Souls tabletop game officially endorsed by Namco is coming to kickstarter today. Already these two figurines have been revealed.

It is supposedly gonna have a huge focus on stamina management and will be very tough. I'm looking forward to hearing of the details on it soon.
>>
Probably won't even play the game, but gimme some souls minis for sure
>>
I'm expecting something like The Dark Eye - convoluted shit by people who think they like crunch but don't understand game design.
>>
>>46769348
Oh hell yes. It'll be worth it just for the sweet minis alone. The biggie and smalls figurines already got me excited
>>
>>46769364
I haven't played it, but Guildball is pretty well regarded.

So who would you like to see in the core game as minis?
We got Ornstein and Smough, of course. Those two are pretty much the most iconic of the game.

I'd also like to see the Gaping Dragon, Nito, Seath, Maneater Mildred, Queelag, the other three knights of Gwyn, Gwyn himself, and perhaps even some bosses from Dark Souls 2, like the Looking Glass Knight.

Expansions can include more characters from Dark Souls 2 and 3, and hell maybe a rule extension for Bloodborne as well.
>>
>>46769343
I might buy it just for the minis, but Steamforged did pretty fucking good with Guildball so I'm optimistic about the actual game part.
>>
>>46769447
Artorias, Elite Knight, Kirk, Solaire, Havel, Tarkus.
For monster types, Smelter Demon, Taurus Demon, Gaping Dragon, Aldia, Bell Gargoyle. 4kings would be cool, but needing 4 of them would be a drag hey.

I am curious if this will be a legit board game or if it will be more of a tabletop RPG. According to their website they intend for the game to be very easy to get into, but scales into complexity overtime. If this is intended for long term play, it does sound like it is meant for longer or at least mid-length campaigns.

I am sure that means that you start with one of the starting classes like you would in the video game, then spec your stats with soul levels overtime. No race or rolling stats bullshit: You just pick a class, get your starting equipment, spells, and maybe one special item of choice, then go to town.
>>
http://steamforged.com/dark-souls-kickstarter

Oh, phew, it's just a board game.
If it's something like the Castle Ravenloft DnD4e-inspired board game, that could be pretty cool.
>>
>>46769364
Out of interest, what's so bad about tDA in your opinion?

dont forget The Pursuer, one of the cooler elements of DS2

or is this only going to draw from the original?

Holy fucking shit, Gibs me dat Ornstein! I'm not too big into the whole boardgame aspect but I hope they made the figures available separately too. Would make god-like proxies.

Replacing all logical, coherent thought with BOOBS is an act humanity has been performing for about as long as humanity has been a thing, anon.

Though personally I'd like to see more of the demon types, Capra demon and dogs, Taurus Demon, Titanite demon...

Also, Artorius and Sif are cool.

I definitely need the Knights of Gwyn.

From DS2, I'd want Emerald Herald, Benhart of Jugo, Lucatiel, Darklurker, Lost Sinner, Iron King, Executioner's Chariot, Velstadt, Fume Knight, Sir Alonne, Ivory King, and maybe Sihn, if they can make one that big.

DS3, Abyss Watchers, Saint Aldritch (though his appearance is itself a spoiler), Yhorm the Giant, Pontiff Sulyvain, High Lord Wolnir (just imagine the giant skele), Prince Lothric/Lorian , and some of the NPCs like Siegward.

Also Soul of Cinder
>>
>>46769364
We're talking about a board game, not an RPG.
>>
On one hand, I hate that "cool miniatures" and massive over-production are what drives so much success on kickstarter for board games, but on the other hand... we keep getting really cool miniatures for the folks that want them.

Hopefully the game itself is cool as well.

"Dungeon-delve" board games can walk that line pretty well - and can lean either way.

That's certainly the most obvious route to take with the license - and the most miniatures-intensive.

>>
I'm a little disappointed they're doing a dungeon crawler, and especially concerned that it's a dice based one, but as with many in the thread, I'm gonna back this entirely for the minis.

It is a shame, though. I still think there are vastly more interesting things you could do with a boardgame in the Souls universe. The XCOM boardgame had the right idea, trying to create a new and different experience in the same universe without directly competing with what the vidya version already does better.

They better release those minis separately because Im not going to buy some game Ill play maybe twice with people.

They'd better put as much effort into the board art as they do into the minis.
>>
>>46769447
>So who would you like to see in the core game as minis?
I'd like some new knights. Guys we haven't seen before. I just love the Dark Souls knight designs and would legit buy the whole game just for them.
>>
So what core game mechanic that perfectly embodies Dark Souls should be present in the board game to differentiate it from a standard dungeon crawl?
>>
>>46770442

Personally, I wouldn't make it a dungeon crawl, but if I had to I'd build it around balancing and management of risk against reward. Set it up as semi co-op, semi-competitive, with each person on their own journey but with the ability to assist or invade others.

You're all heading for the same endpoint, and it's a matter of who gets there first. You're balancing health and stamina in each fight, whether to press on to try and win or withdraw for another go, while also dealing with the risk and reward of going from bonfire to bonfire. Can you make it to the next one, or should you recharge and try again?

Covenants could be picked up in play, alongside items etc, giving you extra options and bonuses for interacting with other people.

Honestly, that idea would likely work better as a dungeon crawl themed card game than a tabletop with a lot of minis.

Is there a Soulsborne character more evil than Pontiff Sulyvahn?
Look at the list of crimes he is responsible for:
>Stole the Profane flame after Yhorn went LoC. cheapening his legacy while using it to bolster his down
>Usurped the capital of Anor Londo, making it his powerbase while tearing down the symbols of the once glorious Old Gods and enslaving their servants
>Let Gwyndolin be horrible raped and devoured slowly by his pet cannibalistic slime monster, Saint Aldritch
>Turn the Knights of Anor Londo into his own personal army and made the Handmaiden his personal Dancer Harem, removing their ass armor to oogle at them at will
>Kidnap children that even resembles the Old gods to ensure his power will remain forever and to wipe out potential threats
>Exiled his enemies as Outrider knights but secretly booby trapped their rings so that they are driven insane into bestial knights.
>Usurp the Darkmoon blades and make his own twisted imitation of their powers.
>Slaughtered almost everyone of his the Darkmoon knights in the company and lock their cutie Captain who is basically Priscella 2.0 in a tower.
>Keeps a dungeon that's basically Lataria 2.0 complete with branding jailors and half-insane inmates
>Organised a fightclub with the Abyss Watchers right before their debut so that you only get to fight 1 as an mid-boss instead of a glorious endboss
>Returned one of the Stormruler blades to Yhorn so he ends up as a shitty gimmick fight instead of a fitting conclusion to the Epic saga of Onion Kinght's quest
>Has such a kickass theme that's used in the Launcher trailer, but is actually disappointingly short
>Separated his boss weapons into 2 generic weapon instead of an Awesome paired weapon that lets you be a Sithlord
>Swapped the INT and FAITH scaling around so he can remain as Sorcrer supreme
>Actually cause you Sin when you kill him because he's the new boss of Darkmoons now
>Is a majority shareholder in Scamco and delayed DS3 because he wanted more buffs

I wonder if the whole 'Snaketrap dies slowly and horribly, then his desecrated remains get waved in your face during the boss fight' was just a fuck you to the rule 34 crowd. It's not like he was a particularly memorable boss or an important part of the franchise, no reason for him to make a cameo.

It's like at some early meeting they went, 'So here we have The Blob on this recycled map, who are we going to feed to it that the players will recognize?'
'The sunny guy.'
'No, he's roasted.'
'Ornstein?'
'No, he's in DLC.'
'Andre?'
'Nah, we'll have to make a new blacksmith then.'
'...The snake dude.'
'Who?'
'The tranny from that covenant that never worked properly. The one with the moveset that does not in any way fit the theme of a devouring blob monster.'
'Eh whatever.'

Most likely they made another attempt at making a "liquid boss" FROM have been dreaming about for a while now, failed and decided to turn him into a fanservice boipucci boss. I mean, other bosses didn't get their title changed, yet somehow Aldrich went from being Saint of the Deep to Devourer of Gods. Most likely he was supposed to be a Cathedral of the Deep final boss, and Deacons would've been placed somewhere earlier in one of the large open areas, like where you see them in the trailer.
That said, I don't think it turned out to be that bad, and the fight itself is pretty much Aldia's fight from DaS2 done right.

He is still probably alive and you can hear him screaming, although it's hard because the ebin remix theme is so damn loud. Aldrich is a slow eater.

It's the literal opposite of that. That's what I was saying. It was a Fuck You: The Boss to snaketrap fans and a crappy fight for everyone else. It served no point other than being annoying. >>
So how does this compare to Kingdom Death?
>>
>>46773421

Very different games, KD will still likely be a better game overall.
>>
>>46773421

No idea, we have limited details.

It sounds like, instead of having a settlement, you play 'levels'. Levels start with a bonfire, and then you fight through a bunch of minions (we don't know if the level is randomly generated or a set path) and ends with a boss monsters. If you die, you get sent back to the bonfire and everything respawns.

The monster has an AI deck, like KDM, that determines what attacks it uses, where that attack targets, and also where the monster is most vulnerable right now as a result. Unlike KDM, when the AI deck runs out you just take it and put it back, without shuffling it, so if you can remember the pattern of attacks last time you will know in advance what the monster will do this time around.

Stamina = Health. Taking actions temporarily lowers it, taking damage permanently lowers it. So as you take damage you ability to take actions suffers, and taking a bunch of actions at once leaves you open to getting one hit killed in reprisal. Estus takes you back to full, but takes an entire turn to drink so you better be out of harms way first.

I get the impression that it scratches a lot of the same itches as KDM, but with less of a campaign focus because there is no settlement. There was a proof of concept game demo for the combat system at a convention, but it was just a boss fight. We have no idea what the rest of the game looks like.

If the Dark Souls kickstarter can offer a poor mans KD:M, with a broader appeal - they'll get a lot of attention. The name alone ensures they utterly crush any sane kickstarter goals. I just hope they can get it out in a reasonable timeframe. I have faith the game will be worth owning. I am ready, lets hurry up and do this.

Shibuya was directing DaS2 initially, fucked up miserably, they had to assign a new director (Yui Tanimura), but BAMCO wouldn't let him re-build the game from scratch due to time restrictions and he was forced to sew together already created assets, thus making a vidya Frankenstein and becoming the ultimate scapegoat and antichrist of Souls fandom, even though he is not fully responsible for the game ending up the way it ended up being.
>>
>>46774038

I've only played Scholar, but I don't think it was a bad game. Not a great one, not up to the standards of the Souls series, but I enjoyed my time with Scholar of the First sin enough to make it worth playing.

I think Dark Souls 2 is a fine game. It sure is a whole lot better than most other games in the genre released at the time. People are just being too emotional and invested in the first game. Hell, I thought Dark Souls was inferior to Demon's Souls at the time due to all the unfinished flaws in the game like Lost Izalith.
>>
>>46774167

Dark Souls 1 is one of few games where I'd really enjoy seeing a full HD remake. Do a 'classic' mode with the same mechanics and features, just a UI and graphics overhaul, but I'd also love it if they went all out on making an improved version of the game. Import some of the mechanical refinements from the future games and fully implement some of the cut features and scaled back areas to create a really definitive version of the game.
>>
>>46774234
I would like a touched up version of Demon's Souls. It would make me buy a PS4.

>>
>>46774234
Despite lost izalith being pretty shitty and rushed, I think being slightly unfinished and having cut content really improved dark souls. Based off of what they had wanted to do with Oscar originally, it seems the two endings existing would have been much more blatant.
>>
>>46774389
The minis are kinda underwhelming. They look a bit too smooth and unrefined.
>>
>>46774433
I'm sure that was the intent, they lowball, knowing that $1m is their real goal.

I'm just curious how much they had to pay for licensing costs.
>>
>>46774433
Looks good, but I would like to see more player characters. Hope they'll make some good expansions. And that they will actually be affordable without selling your kidney.
>>
I'm torn, because I've not been able to play Dark Souls 2 or 3, and I've been relatively unspoiled for a lot of them. I did like the first game an enormous amount though.
>>
>>46774482
Well it's the early renders of them
>>
>>46774575
I really like DaS2, but you won't miss much by skipping it.
>>
>>46774489
Gotta be at least 100K for something like this. Probably more. It'll limit it to a single production run in all likelihood, I don't expect a sustained project beyond the initial boardgame without more kickstarters backing it.
>>
>>46774599
I will wait and see. I might just save my money for a Kingdom Death starter box instead. I'm really liking that White Lion mini.
>>
>>46774454
You could argue that any area after Sen's is shitty and rushed. There was the passage to Anor Londo that was cut and replaced with the winged demons cutscene, Anor Londo is too clean and empty, all four lord soul areas suck some kind of ass. While it's good they had to drop some of their original ideas, DaS1 could use going through another development cycle. The contrast between the first and the second half is... stark.
>>
>>46774609
That's what I thought, but I'm still curious. Its highly unlikely I'm going to be able to get a PS4 or time to play the new one any time soon as well.

The one thing that doesn't translate well to a board game at all is the verticality of DS, or really the exploratory adventure aspects at all. The idea that Lordran was one vast environment, logically linked from top to bottom that was very slowly decaying but where people were still trying (or at least had tried) to repair and salvage it. That was my favourite part of the whole experience, and something that DS2 apparently lost.

>>46774708
I noticed that, but I quite liked the winged demon transports. They were a bit Dreamlands, and the idea that the olympian heaven of the Gods had obvious demons in place of angels was an early sign that things were not right even there.
>>
>>46774666
I'll see what the campaign is looking like near the end before I put money in.

>>46774708
>The contrast between the first and the second half is... stark.

It really is. And yet it's hard to put a finger on why except for some areas of blatant problems aka we're out of time and the publisher is breathing down our necks, copy and paste a load of the same mob areas.
I can happily replay everything up to Anor Londo, and go through the painting. But the trudge to Ornstien and Smough sucks the life out of me every time, and doesn't feel worth the slog through the more dull stuff after that to get the more dispersed good bits.

Well good news is that Pyromancer and Hunter classes had been added as stretch goals and met. I am hoping the Sorcerer and Cleric classes will make it too. And for those wanting high risk/reward, the Deprived.

I do like how the bosses have specific behavior cards too. Makes them feel more unique to eachother.

My only real worry is how they will be able to sustain the game with only three bosses at the start. Will you HAVE to get the Minis for the expansion sets, or will they have booster sets that are just card packs instead for those who can't afford to spend 40 to 70 bucks per expansion?
>>
Looking forward to painting these minis

Dark Souls minis are one of those things I've wanted for years... but space is an issue, and I'd rather spend this money on video games. If I back the kickstarter, it's really going to be contingent on whether or not the stretch goals are good. That's the main reason I like mini kickstarters, you get shit tons of high quality minis (hopefully) for a cutthroat price.

This is a travesty. I get that Giantdad himself might be too much to hope for, but that is the least impressive Invader they could have designed.
>>

>Uh, they said the minis come fully assembled. What can I expect since I only had contact with unassembled ones so far?

Nothing exciting, just means they come like you see in the pictures. What you see is what you'll get. Most board game minis work like this since they're also trying to appeal to non-wargamers who aren't into the modelling side of the hobby.
>>
>>46776340

>>
>>46774817
>I'll see what the campaign is looking like near the end before I put money in.

Yeah, I have put enough money into kickstarters by now to learn some temperance. I have already put a lot of money into the Monolith Conan boardgame. So I don't feel like I need another boardgame with lots of minis at this point.

Honestly, I would be more interested in the kickstarter if they would just produced resin or plastic sprue Dark Souls minis, instead of having to just tie it all into a yet another boardgame.
>>

You can expect having to carefully disassemble them, clean mold lines, fill gaps and put them back together. Because the underpaid Chinese factory worker who did original assembly did piss poor job.

This one is a company that has actually made games before and not just in a 'one of these guys who is on the project did a thing when he was backed by a major corporation once'. Said game making company is still in business.

They are working with a popular IP of an ongoing franchise.

They have a proof of concept and physical elements already available for cons and shit.

This is a pretty safe bet, as far as kickstarter goes. We are getting a game out of this. The only question is whether that game is worth what we paid, but the stretch goals that we reached just today alone leave me fairly satisfied.
