No, you know it's fucking boring when you're trying to make a believable and cool character with a background capable of offering some decent plot hooks to the DM and then THAT GUY, yes, THAT GUY, shows up telling that his original idea is playing a drunkard asshole with an axe. Rigorously CN even though their usual alignment should be LG.
I mean, I'm not asking you to play a thri-kreen rogue/wizard, just... just try something that isn't a walking fucking joke, senpai.

D&D elves are also manlets though, it's not like they're Tolkien elves or anything. Dwarves are just easier to meme with, because an elf is expected to act his age.

I'm the guy running the game, therefore I have ultimate control over the NPC.

I just won't indulge his magical realm. Maybe if he behaves, I'll have one or two female characters squee over how cute he is, but that's the limit of it.

Seriously, when is it ever a problem, if the GM isn't in on it? Besides, knowing my group, if he tries acting effeminate or weak, he'll get bullied out of the room.

Save me. I don't indulge magical realm (much), but ffs, they approach every problem with ultraviolence and testosterone! It's impossible to run a game where something doesn't get blown up or disemboweled twice a session!

Automated Defenses Mate.
Someone that Minmaxed has a weak point. He's not an Ultramarine. Poison gas, LSD Grenades, Social Conflict that can't be resolved with physical combat thus forcing him to either act or set the party back so far they fine themselves stuck spinning their wheels, their investigations going nowhere all the clues they find keep leading them to people who are already dead. Make the party not want to support him.
>>
>>46767350

Thats actually quite good, mermaid bone totems are up there in price with unicorn totems, so all I need is a comparable mate and I can start up my fortress breeding/harvesting program. Best part is, we don't even need to wait for them to reach adulthood, as the bone drop is the same, just let them pump out babies that immediately air drown.
>>
For fuck's sake dude, I said you were gonna play a party of maids and butlers with guns. Where the fuck did you even come up with mermaid fuckboy? He doesn't even look slightly dapper!
>>
>>46767866
>wives
Prized breeders, you mean
>>
>>46769613
I've tried automatic defenses. The combat wombat tech priest just hacks them and shuts them down, or turns them on the fleshy enemies.

And I've tried poison rounds and hallucinogen grenades. They've practically never failed a toughness test! Fuck, they're mixing spook in with their own hallucinogen grenades for the lulz! The psyker is snorting the stuff neat!

And every time I put a social character in their way, then just go, "Okay lol, whatever" and leave, then go, "Right, we'll find their cogitator and hack that for the info we need!"

I try to come up with a reason like, "Uh, cogitators aren't common, guys..?" and they just reply,
"Yeah, but for an organisation this big, they HAVE to have one, right? Just to keep everything co-ordinated!" I make a point not to try and shoot down logic without better logic, so what can I even do?

And it's not ONE character! The psyker's a fanatical, drug-addled nutbar who solves everything with telekinetic ass-whuppin; the arbites is never there, due to his irl wife being in hospital lately; tech priest 1 is a close combat monster who loves everything to explode; tech priest 2 is literally only there to loot all the guns and improve them; the assassin is silent half the time, except to snipe people; then the latest addition's a fucking Atillan rough rider!

Please, GOD, what can I do to try and make them realise this system is supposed to be dangerous and lethal and you're supposed to approach every conflict with care and consideration?!
>>
>>46769688
Daemons.

Also swap their dice for a new set you've just bought in the shop because the rolls sound suspect.
>>
>>46769713
I've made them roll with my dice! It doesn't help!

Plus the bloody anarchists often use this sodding computer program one of them wrote... I've tested it. It is random, but their fucking luck...

And I tried a daemon at the climax of the first mission. The psyker opened a warp portal and they noped out to the extraction point. Didn't even see the damn thing, much less confront it.

It's got to the point where they're starting to get upset that my attitude is "Antagonistic." Well maybe it wouldn't HAVE to be, if you chucklefucks would suffer some fucking consequences for your actions!

>>
How do you get around? I told you this game was taking place in a fucking high desert, and I guess it's worth mentioning now that it's far inland.

I'll allow one of the following, if you can't think of anything: You Can polymorph your tail into legs and back at will, but it feels like you're walking on glass when you're using your legs, and you take -2 CON during the effect; You can polymorph your tail into legs, but they're toddler legs.

yeah but telling people that they should play something else is a little difficult and could be met with some hostility.

Hey, I was teenager back then and the games weren't serious, but usual murderhobo dungeon crawls, so my drunken Dorfy McDorfington just fit fine with group that usually consisted of similar walking jokes like ambiguously gay elves and absent-minded wizards with dementia.

Reminds me of a manga called +Anima where small children who endure a near death experience get animal totems ang can gaon a partial shift into their totem.
So you had the crow protag who could sprout wings, the androgynous pretty boy fish totem who could be a merman, the token loli with bat wings and ears and the bear totem silent dude with amnesia.
Surprisingly fun at times that mango. I'd play in that setting.

Things echo terribly and a very loud noise could collapse a mine. Stop being a short viking raider and be a dwarf instead.

Or spend 500 to 1,000 gold on an item that can cast it at will. Or, even better, talk to your GM about spending a bit more on a collar that keeps you perpetually moist... with create water as the prerequisite spell, it should still be pretty cheap.

unf
>>
>>46780947
Y'know, that's not how I meant it, but now that I think about it... there has to be some subconscious reason why I defaulted to "collar" instead of "amulet", or "ring", or something.

where'd they banish the smut thread to, I finally have need for it
>>
>>46780899
What item would that be? Wont you need a decent UMD? Pretty cool, thats an interesting thing to invest in.

And even though create water might be a cheap spell to cast, permanency sure is isnt. Might be a while before you run into anyone who can too.
>>
>>46781088
Let me go find my 3.5 books and tell you the answer to that.
>>
>>46781088
There are rules for creating your own magic items. An at-will spell is spell level x caster level x 2,000 gold, and a 0 level spell counts as 1/2 for calculations, so you can either pay someone 1,000 gold to make it for you, or pay 500 gold if you make it yourself.

If you want the "constant moisture" item instead of just an at-will usage of a cantrip, those rules aren't really as concrete, you just kind of have to eyeball it. Use create water as a starting point (you don't actually need permanency, it's just used as prerequisite because it's the most thematically appropriate spell), and I'd say 2,000 gold is a good price for an item that takes up a slot, doesn't give you any overt benefits, and is just around so you can travel with your party without dying.

Plus, it opens up some interesting story ideas, like your item being stolen and you having to track it down before you dry out... dashing from water trough to flooded gutter just to keep your moisture up.
>>
>>46781088
>>46781288

Oh, and a "use activated" magic item doesn't require UMD, you just use it and it works. UMD is only needed for a spell completion or spell trigger item, like a scroll or a wand.

Unless it was an item that only worked for mermaids, and your non-merfolk character wanted to use it, or something... then a UMD check is needed to "Trick" the item into thinking you're a merfolk.
>>
>>46781288
>>46781322
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#craftWondrousItem

Cool. That's an interesting feat to take when you hit that level 3. It'll give the party acces to a bunch of interesting options. I'm probably still gonna need to see that Permanency though, I'm not the kind of DM to wave making sense just because the benefit might not be that significant. But seeing how you're all commited with taking Feats and all, I might throw a scroll your way.

And show me this "use activated" item that lets you cast Create Water. It sounds cool.
>>
>>46781537
>I'm probably still gonna need to see that Permanency though, I'm not the kind of DM to wave making sense just because the benefit might not be that significant.
What do you mean? You don't need permanency to make a magic item, it's a magic item, it's permanent because you're paying gold (and exp, in some editions). And pricing on magic items is supposed to take into account how useful they are anyway.

> And show me this "use activated" item that lets you cast Create Water.
The entire point of my comments was that you can make your own magic items, you don't have to only settle for the ones listed in the book. There is no create water item in the official items (that I know of), which is why you have to use the guidelines for creating your own items. It does require GM permission and input, but the guidelines are all there.

What's the general consensus here on tolerance of GM and/or player magical realming? Just tell them to show self-control and not be too self-indulgent? Or kill it with fire?
>>
>>46783914
Magical realm is forcing your unwanted fetishes into the game. It doesn't automatically mean the presence of fetishes in the game. With this in mind magical realm is never something that should be tolerated, it should be rebuked. As for the level of rebuke it depends on how hard and transparently they opened the gates to their realm. If they throw that shit shamelessly then it needs to be killed with fire.
>>
>>46783996
It seems that a lot of people freak out and cry 'magical realm' whenever something seemingly fetishy shows up, resulting in players and GMs shying away from such things in order to avoid such accusations. Monsterpeople and beastfolk especially. Is that actually the case?
>>
>>46784123
No, mostly just /tg/ autists, those sort of people never last more than a session in a real game
>>
>>46784123
Expanding on >>46784210, fetishy or potential fetishy aspects in games are only magical realm when they're unwanted, if no one cares it's not an issue
>>
>>46770869
Oceangrunge is better.
>>
>>46784123
It's overexaggerated, like all things on 4chan, I really think a lot of anons are doing something to get themselves into these awful games.

In the case of beastfolk it's mainly just paranoid lashing out at furries since furries were the enemy of this site before sjws came into the limelight. It's a lot of hot air and autism.

Also, sometimes it's because it's THEIR magical realm and they don't like being hot, bothered, distracted, and uncomfortable. So they try to get it out of the game or don't take it well.
>>
>>46781940
> Keeping someone permanently moist isnt what Create Water does though.

Yes, but every magic item needs a prerequisite spell. The item doesn't necessarily have to do exactly what the spell does, it just has to be thematically appropriate. That's why you can use flame blade, flame strike, or fireball as the prerequisite to create a flaming weapon, despite the fact that a flaming weapon doesn't duplicate the effects of any of those spells. You just pick a spell that is closest, thematically, to what you want the item to do... and create water is closest, thematically, to an item that keeps its wearer slightly moist at all times.

> I'm not letting you make an item that lets you just invinitely cast a spell effect at will either.

It's your game, so you can run it how you like (though it worries me that you're running a game while knowing so little about how the game works). This is also why I prefer the "wearable item that keeps you moist at all times" approach, as well, since it doesn't have the added utility that a simple at-will create water would.
>>
What should someone do if they're falsely accused of magical realming? State their case or just back down?
>>
>>46784774
Like all touchy subjects there's no one right answer. It depends on the person.
>>
>>46784660
But thats how a specific item is created by set rules in the game. When you're given general guidelines for creating magic items, you cant just go by whatever is thematically appropriate because that invites a crazy amount of abuse.
>>
>>46784774
Say "fuck it" and show them what it really looks like when you magical realm. Just go all out...lay a tauric dragon hermaphrodite with three dicks and twelve breasts, take any feats you can to get a slave harem, and make sure to throw in a bunch of mind-control and transmutation magic so you can bend the minds and bodies of everyone you meet to your will.

Maybe next time they'll remember that playing a cute elf mage girl really isn't so bad, all things considered.
>>
>>46784879
No, because the GM is supposed to be involved in the creation of the item, so if it's abusive, you can just say "No, that's too much." You can't just let your players create whatever the fuck they want with no input, that's just irresponsible GM'ing.

Thats too meta and emmersion breaking. The rules of the game are the rules of the world which define what the PCs get to do.

I'm not getting in a discussion with players about whatever they consider "thematically appropriate" whenever they think of something broken they want to do or in this case, think of an easy way to make a limitating racial trait not matter.
>>
>>46785290
>The rules of the game are the rules of the world which define what the PCs get to do.
And the rules of the game are that a spell used as a prerequisite doesn't have to perfectly match what the item does.

Look, if you're not comfortable with players making their own magic items, that's fine. New GM's rarely are. But the rules work just fine the way they are,

> I'm not getting in a discussion with players about whatever they consider "thematically appropriate" whenever they... think of an easy way to make a limitating racial trait not matter.

Except that there is no merfolk racial trait saying that they have to be wet all the time. This isn't trying to get past a limiting racial trait, it's just flavor for the character. By RAW, merfolk are not in any way penalized by being dry... they're slow on land, but this item wouldn't change that. Literally all it does is add some flavor to the character.

A merfolk would have a lifetime of experience in using their tail then a human who just had their legs tied together, and would far more then likely have a much greater degree of movement in it as well.
