In any realistic system a level 20 brawler should not exist. E6 exists for a reason.
In any system a level 20 brawler (as well as magic and shit) exists, they should just take the spear at worst and kill the fucker.
In any case, this is why I like stuff like KSBD and Exalted over DnD. If you hone your skill well enough, it becomes supernatural, whether it is magic, martial arts, or gardening.

Long spears are an incredibly powerful weapon for phalanxes, but terribly stupid weapons for single soldiers to wield; it's entirely realistic for a combatant with a short weapon or no weapon to get inside the range of a polearm wielder. That weapon is an advantage, but not the overwhelming one that a proper weapon for that kind of one on one engagement (eg, longsword) would be.
Much closer to correct with crossbows, though there's still some of the same problem. A single crossbowman without backup doing something other than assassination or guarding a long narrow position (eg, corridor, bridge, top of a wall) is not a great proposition. Think about the fact that it's not a given that in a calm, zero pressure situation against a still target, there are professionals that miss targets with guns, much less bows. A hit will be lethal, but one missed shot against an opponent with a skill and physique advantage and a crossbowman is probably done for.
Really, the entire structure of most TRPG adventures comes off kind of silly compared to real life. One very rarely sees very small, relatively equally matched groups facing off in a long sequence.
