You are Kittrane, demon soulborn, school badgirl, and right now you're having the time of your life!

This dungeoning thing is starting to get fun: together you and Phoebe just took down some fake city guards and for a moment everything between you was perfect...alas the moment didn't last long enough and reality intruded.

Still, you now have something else fun to do. The struggling Inky wizard Thaddeus is slung over your shoulder. You'll seen have a new, albeit temporary team-mate alongside Phoebe, Cleya and Evrumine.

“Kittrane is this really a good idea?” asks Cleya as you lead them inside an abandoned house and deposit the teenage scribe on a chair. He immediately tries to flee, but you grab him and throw him back on the chair.

“Why wouldn't it be?” you ask, grinning, still high off the glow from the recent fight.

“Well for starters were not competing as a team here” Cleya points out “I'm not sure the recruiting rules are even in force.”

“Thad doesn't mind, do you Thad?” you say, one hand on his shoulder as you lean down over him. He leans away trying to escape, but you have him firmly trapped.

“A few minutes of 'interrogation' and he's officially an ally” you say, looking around for support.

Phoebe chuckles and says “sure, sounds fun, and if its against the rules, someone will tell us, right?”

Evrumine shakes her head “zis is silly” she says.

“We could just interrogate him for their plans?” points out Phoebe.

“Either way” says Cleya “this is wasting time – we have other teams to hunt.”

Thad just stays silent, looking at you all in fear.

The Inky, Thaddeus, is not a very impressive-looking boy. He's far smaller than you, in fact even Cleya is almost as tall as him. He has well-combed short black hair and his eyes are currently wide with fear as you look over him in his cheap-looking wizards outfit.

“Well Thad” you rumble in a deep voice “anything you want to tell us?”

“Y-y-y-y-you can't hurt me!” he squeaks out in a high pitched voice, then coughs and says in a slightly deeper tone “the rules says.”

“Pssh, rules” you say, waving a hand dismissively and casually breaking the corner off the back of the chair he's leaning back on “the judges aren't here Thad, but I am.”

“You can't do this!” he protests, blood draining from his face, do what – you haven't touched him yet?

“Who's going to stop me?” you purr, your face level with his.

Thad is breathing way to fast, if he doesn't calm down he's going to pass out “Ok, okQ!” he says "I'll tell you everything, just please don't steal my soul!”

You chuckle “no promises Thad...” What a strange belief, is it because you're soulborn, or because you're a demon soulborn?

In the end he doesn't know much. As expected the various teams are heading for the safe houses per the games rules. But an interesting bit of information is that they were given some information you weren't.

Specifically that some of the civilians taking part in the game had magic items that the adventurers – or anyone who captured them – could use.

And that some of the underground cellars are connected by tunnels. According to Thad, some groups, including the Merciful Sisters, are heading to rescue the civilians.

And some of the groups, including Liberated Joy, Hongenstone and Swift Shadow Run, are sneaking through underground tunnels, safe from undead pursuit.
>>
“Let's go catch some innocent townsfolk!” declares Evrumine, with uncharacteristic bloodlust.

“No, a tunnel ambush means we can wipe out some groups before they know we're there” objects Cleya.

“Underground?” says Phoebe, pulling a face “do we have to?”

As you debate the matter Thad tries to slip away, but you grab him one handed and drag him back, before tying him to the chair.

XXX

You sneak through the tunnels and cellars for what feels like hours, but probably isn't even a full hour, before catching sight of Liberated Joy skulking through the tunnels ahead of you.

They're pretty good at sneaking, just not as good as you all are at finding them.

-Careful- sends Cleya, linked to you via Phoebe's ring -They have some spells active on them-

-What sort?- You ask her

-Protective spells and anti-undead stuff on their weapons- she responds -maybe we should follow them, see where they're going?-

-No, just attack- suggests Evrumine.

-Whatever gets us out of these tunnels quicker- sends Phoebe. She's sweating slightly and keeps looking at the ceiling.

-Cleya's right- you send to the others, -they must be headed somewhere special, we'll follow them and find out-

-Fine, let's just get it done- responds Phoebe,m looking increasingly uncomfortable.

You follow the girls in their revealing outfits for some time, as they move quietly through cellars and tunnels. It seems like they're not moving towards any of the safe houses you know of, though distances and directions are hard to track down here.

Suddenly, you come around a corner, and they're no longer there.

-Where?- Evrumine starts to ask, only to yell loudly as there is a quiet hissing noise. Something bounces off your armour and Phoebe gives a yell of surprise.

Everything goes dark.

-What happened?- You send to the others.

-Something hit me in the neck!- an outraged Phoebe sends -An arrow or something, didn't get through though-

-Me too- you get a fuzzy message from Evrumine -It hurts a lot- her mental voice fades in and out.

-Cleya?- You send. There's no answer

-Cleya the darkness- you send -can you get rid of it?-

Again, no answer. Then there's yelling and arrows flying all around you. Damn, ambush!

It's dark, you can't see what's happening, and Cleya might be down.

Presumably, they detected an entity behind them, set up an ambush, and then individually changed the plan on the fly.

Why the hell would others not get caught in an ambush that they were setting up from detecting one entity when we're traveling in a group?

it actually is because it means we must have either moved around the corner without looking around at all, and they blinked behind us, also without us noticing at all.

-Phoebe- You send -Get rid of the darkness!-

At the same time you use draw forth your own innate powers and the whole place seems to light up around you, though you can still see a faint haze of the darkness.

Seconds later Phoebe's spell goes off and the faint haze in your vision disappears.

You're in a cellar full of someone's junk: chairs and tables and all odds and ends. You and your allies are back to back, Cleya is crumpled in the middle of your little group, lying on the floor but her chest is still moving, a dart in her neck. Whatever they shot at you really did a number on her.

Surrounding you: two to either side of you are Liberated Joy. All of them have small crossbows out, and as Evrumine charges, two drop these and draw forth short swords and whips. The other two fire off another pair of bolts at you and Phoebe, to little effect.

Evrumine swings her axe at one – who tries to jump back but isn't quick enough and Evvy's strike knocks her flying back into a pile of chairs. The leather-clad girl quickly shakes her head and starts to rise though. The other one dances around Evrumine, hitting her with sword and whip – to little effect.

The other two start frantically loading their crossbows. How they managed to surprise you, you don't know. Sure they obviously ducked aside when they came in here, but how did you not see them?

-Get Cleya up!- You send to Syphoebeus, drawing on the burning heat within you as Phoebe kneels down and starts casting her own spell.

A tiny glowing bead appears in your hand and you fling it at the two girls reloading hand crossbows. They quickly drop their weapons and dive for cover- the ball of fire erupts in between them. The two shriek in surprise and pain.

Behind you, another muffled grunt tells you that Evrumine is still battling hard. A loud bellow from that direction tells you that she is not having everything her own way.

Under Syphoebeus' hands Cleya awakens and quickly asks “What's going on?” Sitting up with an abrupt jerk.

“Ambush” you say tersely, as the two girls you blasted down rise and start casting spells of their own.

With a roar you charge forwards as the girl in leathers throws a sickly-looking green mass at you. It hits you head on: you feel sick and weak, like you want to just lay down and sleep. Your limbs feel heavy and just putting one foot in-front of the other is difficult.

Out of the corner of your eye you can see that Syphoebeus is similarly afflicted.

Beams of light flash past you from behind, but Cleya must still be woozy or something: none of them hit their targets. You power on through the weakness, batting aside the hastily drawn sword your foe thrusts in your direction and focusing all of your considerable strength into a powerful strike. Your flaming axe slams into her, and she drops, wheezing.

At your side Phoebe brings the hammer down on her foe: smashing her into the floor. At the same time the spell on you fades and your strength returns. Looking around you can see that Evrumine has downed her foe as well. As stealthy and sneaky as this team is, they reckoned without the sheer toughness of yours.

The last one throws down her sword with a scowl and shows you all open hands.

“Geez, fine!” she snaps “this is a really tough first mission, they could have told us before we signed on that this was an elite event.”

You try not to smile too much at that, instead you just point your burning axe at her, As Evrumine breathes deeply, trying to get her temper under control.

“Strip” you say to the girl from Liberated Joy.

She gives you an astonished look, as do your team mates.

“I'm not trusting you to not have hidden weapons” you say “clothes off, now – you can put them on once we can see you're not hiding anything.”

Evrumine and Syphoebeus look away as the last standing member of the opposing team strips. Cleya as always, can see all around her.
>>
“Why were you even coming this way?” asks Syphoebeus.

The girl gives you a considering look “heard there was a safe house this way” she says. Hmm, no, that doesn't sound right. The safe houses were deeper in town, these girls were hugging the town wall.

“Try again” you growl. Now down to her underwear, and discarding the knives in hidden sheaths on her legs the girls shoulders slump “Ok, fine, we heard there was a hidden stash of gold in one of these cellars – and not a quest-thing either – an actual treasure hoard someone buried years and years ago.”

“And you came 'ere to steal it?” an outraged Evrumine spins around jiust as the girl is removing the last of her clothing under your stern gaze. Evrumine blushes and spins back around.

“We heard the original owner was dead.” says the girl, starting to dress again once you give her a permissive nod “seemed like it was up for taking.”

“Even if that's the case” points out Cleya, sounding like a miniature lawyer “the owner will have descendants, or if not then it'll belong to the city or something.”

The girl shrugs “just what I was told to do” she says.

“We should report this” says Syphoebeus “We might get a rewards or something for doing so, but even if we don't, we should report it.”

Cleya nods in agreement. Evrumine huffs in disapproval “And zey will get punished” she adds.

The girl from Liberated Joy gives you a calculating look “If you don't tell anyone we were after it, we'll owe you one” she says “and if you let us report the treasure to the city we'll owe you two – what do you say?”

The other girls from Liberated Joy are just starting to rouse.

>Report Liberated Joy's attempt at theft (and existence of treasure)
>Report treasure to town (keep Liberated Joy out of it)
>Let Liberated Joy report the treasure.

I don't really want to let them get away with it or even really have anything more to do with them than necessary. Worst team, 0/10.

We should be honest. There's no telling how honest these girls are, for all we know they could lie and say we were going to steal the treasure just to cover their asses or be spiteful.

Oh boy, does anybody else think that Report treasure to town would be everyones second choice but this will come down to one vote (or GMs call) and half of us wont be happy with the outcome or am I worrying too much?

Thats just how it goes. I would change, but at this point with all the samefag I won't even bother,
>>
>>46716664
Well, it's already over (10-7 in favor of reporting the treasure and the theft, I think), and reporting to the town without reporting the theft attempt was actually my first choice, but I bandwagoned onto reporting the theft as well because the alternative was worse to me.
>>
>>46716664
>Oh boy, does anybody else think that Report treasure to town would be everyones second choice but this will come down to one vote (or GMs call) and half of us wont be happy with the outcome or am I worrying too much?
Probably accurate.
>>
>>46716688
Make sure to try and get their teacher written up as well, preferably with her taking the blame rather than her students. One of them gave away that they were doing as told.
>>
>>46716705
I was thinking that Report treasure to town (keep Liberated Joy out of it) might have been best after reading >>46716557 but at that point as you said it was 10/7 (or 9/6/2 if we had both voted for it) so not much point.
>>
>Liberated Joy
>Clerics and rogues who follow Salaya. Also from an all-girls school. These girls are wearing outfits that would give Chame ideas. Apparently even thieves guilds are allowed to sponsor schools and adventurers clubs nowadays. Their mistress (not teacher) gives you a disdainful look that makes you want to slap her. You hope your girls humiliate them in the battle to come.
At least our totally-not-adoptive-father will be happy.
>>
>>46716619
I'll admit that I completely forgot they worshiped her.
>>
As the other girls from Liberated Joy wake up, the followers of the Goddess of oath-breaking, you shake your head “No” you say “We'll be reporting this – the treasure and everything you've said. If you're telling the truth, then your teachers will take the blame and not you, but we're not letting you get away with this.”

The members of Liberated Joy glare at you, and have some choice words as you order the rest of them to strip down to reveal any hidden weapons. You've been called worse.

At one point you even think they're going to resume the fight, but they think better of it, and do as you tell them.

The four of you escort them out of the cellars under close watch. Syphoebeus takes the opportunity to lean in, put an arm around your shoulders for a quick one-armed squeeze and whisper in your ear “I knew you'd do the right thing Kitten, I am so proud of you!”

Phoebe is the only one who can call you that without it pissing you off. And her words light a warmth in your stomach that persists all the way to the judges offices in the town hall – you know you made the right choice.

XXX

After handing the girls of Liberated Joy over to the judges, you find the Professor standing outside the town hall, still in his goofy-looking Witch-King get-up.

“Hey girls” he says, spotting you “How did it go?”

“We took out the Inkies and Liberated Joy” you say, explaining your escapades. Professor Sallazar claps his hands together in uncharacteristic glee before saying in a calmer manner “very well done girls, excellent work, I'm proud of the way you handled that.”

You try not to show any appreciation of his praise, instead asking in a disinterested tone “so, what's next?” You are aware of Cleya at your side squirming and turning away, she should have gone to the water closet sooner...
>>
“Well all the teams are accounted for” says the Professor “so now there will be some smaller missions with one or more teams to a mission. The Daves tell me that he wants the club on some of these.”

“Ritual Circle – basic defence mission. As the Witch King I'll be raising the towns dead for reinforcements. Several of the club will try to stop me. I can';t participate in the battle directly due to casting my spell.”

“Take Down the High Priest – Basically the opposite to the first one. The Towns High Priest is calling the wrath of the gods down on the undead – he needs to be stopped. Some teams will be defending him.”

“Hunt or Rescue – The Lord Mayor requested this one, his son is a fan. Anyway, the lord of the towns son is trapped across town and needs rescuing from a heavily undead infested area. Your mission is two-fold: stop the teams sent to rescue him, and kidnap as many of them as you can. You can convert them into allies.”

“And last, but not least. A retired Paladin has turned up and the Daves have written him into the plot. Lord Tamulus was a very fierce warrior in his day, and despite his age...might be more than most teams can handle. I'm thinking whether I should even send a team after him or not. Still, he said he wants to get involved, and getting on his good side could have some real benefits for Janrael and one or two others....”

The Professor taps the bottom of his skull mask with his fingers “but who to send where.” It's already late evening, you hope you get a chance to rest before this next encounter.

True but Anons that voted for Old Paladin got to vote on the team (unless you took all the votes then you've counted votes not intended for this mission) so 3 of us didn't get to vote as punishment for wanting a different mission.

I would like to change my vote please.
>>
>>46718324
Anon, if we have a revote every time someone votes for an outlier option in multiple choice, we'll take hours to get through each vote.
>>
>>46718370
When it's something where the vote is dependent on information we don't have until the vote is over then we didn't get the information needed to make the vote, if we were voting on where to go on holiday and what to bring would you say I couldn't get a revote on taking skis and a warm coat to Italy?
>>
>>46718476
You could go skiing

You are Janrael, Angel Soulborn, member of the adventurers club, and apprentice wizard.

You are perched on the top of a roof, looking down at a mass of zombies and skeletons being...destroyed. There's no other way to describe it.

A plate-mail covered man is walking slowly down the street, ornate longsword in hand. The merest brush with this blade causes the undead – simulacrum or otherwise to dissolve into dust. None of the undead can harm this man in his gold-burnished armour as he wanders casually down the street, destroying them at his leisure and, from the sounds coming within his helmet, singing in a cheerful, upbeat tone as he does so.

Being this close to him feels...strange. Your protective spells block out evil, but even dozens of feet away from him it's like you don't need them. His paladins aura or whatever it is, is driving evil away. Within the range of whatever this is, you feel at peace, but more than that you feel....good. Happy and content and slightly tickled all at once.

You shake your head to clear it and leap off the roof, heading away from the paladin and gliding down to your team: Phaysis, Calluna and Nataline.

Phaysis asks “Well?”

“It's him” you say “no way can it be anyone else.”

“It can always be someone else” says Calluna “but he might not know that.”

You try not to figure out what she's thinking, all it does is give you a headache.

“So what are we to do?” asks Nataline, in a voice that singers would kill for.

“Frontal assault is well, suicidal” you say “the undead are supposed to respond to our commands – we could round a lot of them up and try to wear him out.”

“Or keep hitting him at a distance” adds Phaysis “hit and run, ranged attacks, I mean, he's old right, I bet he doesn't want to run around a lot.”

“We should trap him” Calluna interjects “on a place he can't fight. Like in a building or alleyway, drop nets and stuff on him, his limbs aren't detachable I'll bet.” A short but awkward silence follows that.
>>
Nataline suggests tentatively “or we could talk to him, perhaps he'll be amenable to a duel or contest of some sort.”

How to approach this? (please pick only 1)

Fight at a distance it is. This will be OP of next thread - which will be same time next saturday.

Thanks you for playing, asnd apologies about the misunderstanding re: the ambush. I will try to be clearer over what's happening in future.

You can spend XP and Training points to boost the girls up in preparation for next thread.
