Constructs dozens of different patterns for different armies, sisters of bolter. Imperial guard. Space marines and various other smaller factions.

Wonders why its losing the tech to do so.

Why isn't the imperial guard supplied with rhinos and predators as a replacement for the lemruss and their respected transports or vice versa.
>>
The Sisters of Battle 90% use the same models of vehicles are marines.

I mean, the Immolator is a very slight variant of a space marine Vehicle and both the Repressor and Exorcist are built on the Predator Chassis.
>>
>>46687238
Yeah. Why doesn't the imperial guard use the same?
>>
>>46687245
guard vehicles are better than vehicles based on the rhinos chassis.
>>
>>46687245
i think the lore response is price,
a russ is cheaper than dirt, and by killing a enemy elite or 100 idiots it probably paid itself
>>
>>46687245
They used to.
>>
The same reason why the Soviet Union was building T-64, T-72 and T-80 concurrently.

Because politics.
>>
>>46687245
Russ and Chimera are less technologically advanced than the Predator / Rhino, making them cheaper and easier to build.
>>
Properly maintained rhino-chasis based vehicles can easily serve for thousands of years. Chimeras and Leman Russes break as any other vehicles. Also, there are elements of equipment in Astartes vehicles that make them much more technologicaly advanced but have no representation in the rules - advamced cogitators, autopilot systems, life support, medical support, black carapace compatibility, you name it. A Chimera is just a heavy apc.

>Chimeras and Leman Russes break as any other vehicles.

How many combat vehicles do you know that are still active after 326 years of service? In Chapter Approved 2004, pg. 22, they have a Russ just showcasing some of the elements of a Russ, and then a list of its history, which starts from 673.M41 and goes all the way to 999.M41, and during that time it has collected well over 1500 citations for itself.
>>
>>46688912

Agreed, but remember that it's 40k. 400 yrs of service is a lot, hence the vehicle in question was mentioned, but for Predators and Land Raiders two millenia is normal.
>>
>>46688912
We didn't have combat vehicles 326 years ago.

I see your point, but our military tech is advancing. 40k is stagnant.
Plus that Russ has probably none of the original parts still in it.

On a sidenote, a ft-17 was still fighting in afganistan a few years ago, and pre-1900 rifles or even jezzails are used in various parts of the world today.
>>
>>46687214
Space marine vehicles aren't made for slugging matches like what the guard carry out. This is why the Chimera and Russ are more heavily armored and armed.

Space marine vehicles are meant to get in and get out, aside from land raiders (which are way too expensive for IG use) and Vindicator's, which job is done better by the Leman Russ Demolisher for IG purposes.

In addition, while IG vehicles may not be as reliable as SM vehicles (and that's a big if, as many sources quote IG vehicles to be very reliable as long as the crews don't modify them) they are far easier to work on in the field. Even a regular guardsman can fix most simple issues on a Russ, and those that can't be attended by regular tecpriests. A space marine needs a dedicated tech marine to do anything to a rhino.
>>
>>46687214
The Chimera is better that the Rhino at everything except transporting massive dudes in power armor. Space Marines don't use it because they wouldn't fit.

>hence the vehicle in question was mentioned

Or it was an example of a typical vehicle you'd find in the IG. Nothing in the bit made it stand out as anything special, just a normal Russ.

Is there much fluff regarding the service age of Marine vehicles? Sure, there's the one in IA vol. 2, which was in active duty for 8,000 years, but it also belonged to a primarch, so no fucking way are they not going to maintain it like a motherfucker.

>a ft-17 was still fighting in afganistan a few years ago

Do give a source, because all I can find are old ass models rusting in the desert or propped on pedestals at museums and such. Also, did the tank have an active combat history from WW1 to modern day, or was it just something they found, refurbished and rolled out?

>pre-1900 rifles or even jezzails are used in various parts of the world today

How much use do they see and how many of them date back to the that long time ago and aren't mere reproductions of a later date?

>>46691499
>wouldn't fit.
>chimera can fit more terminators than a land raider
>>
>>46691499

So instead of accomodating the Chimera to serve their purpuse they construct and maintan highly advanced transports for thousands of years.

Yeah, I call bullshit on that.

>>46687245
Why isn't every marine a SEAL?
Why isn't every airforce plane an A-10?
>>
Logic and science doesn't apply to 40k at all. Then you add the fact that chaps in GW are amateur historians at best with no proper know how of modern shit.

Nowadays old weapons are usually found in irregular forces or insurgents. They are mainly either Mosin Nagants or Enfields.

There is few exceptions on this. Pre-WW2 Madsen LMGs have been seen with Brazilian police and Finns still use Mosin Nagant parts with Imperial Russian markings in their sniper rifles.

The fact that the setting was created in the 80's, do you really expect them to update it to modern standards with tacticool and nanomachines, son? The whole point is that it's feudal society with WW1-2 looking stuff with l4z0rz and fusion reactors.

>Nowadays old weapons are usually found in irregular forces or insurgents.

Pic related: irregular forces and insurgents using pre-WW2 machine gun.

>>46691614
Space marines don't get Chimeras because Robot Gurliman forgot about Multilasers when he wrote the Codex Astartes, so they have to shun it.

Same with sentinels.
>>
>>46691749
Because the f-16 can do the job just as good, no need for the ugly warthog :^).
>>
>>46691749
Because the A-10 is a shitty plane that doesn't even do what it was designed for correctly
>>
>>46691610
Not sure about jezzails and martini-henrys but the CIA specifically gave old Lee Enfields to the Mujahideen for most of the Soviet-Afghan war. Later they started giving them Chinese AKs laundered through Pakistan

Codex SM vehicles are fucking terrible.

>A space marine needs a dedicated tech marine to do anything to a rhino.
Actually, Rhino Crews are able to repair the Rhino in the field, or at least they used to.
>>
>>46695916
They can still. And all Marines are taught how to operate a Rhino (IA vol. 2).
>>
>>46687214

Because the Rhino and Chimera are designed to do two different jobs, and they complement the forces that use them, although some of the original differences are no longer apparent.

The Rhino is a pure transport, designed to get to the drop off, and dump a squad of Power-Armoured shock troops where they can do most good. These shock troops (Astartes, Arbites, or Sororitas, whatever) are forces that fight using high mobility strikes.

The Chimera on the other hand is designed to deliver troops as part of a formation, then to stick around and provide fire support to slower moving forces, whose tactics involve actually holding ground, and fighting in a more defensive manner.

If you go back to the 2nd ed vehicle sheets it becomes more apparent, the Rhinos (and their variants) had higher max speeds and accelerations than the Chimera chassis, allowing them to better show off the mobility that Marines et al are supposed to use, whereas the Chimera and Russ chassis were slower, but could actually soak a shot or two.
