You shake your head at Hiss’ offer. Being beside her in the middle of all this is strange. When you first arrived you called this scene a hellscape and you’re still right but with Hiss it’s different. Men and women are still fighting and dying and blood and fire still reign supreme but Hiss sits through all of it as if it wasn’t there. She can’t be hurt or barely even touched by anything here and so the desperate struggle and deaths of many become nothing more than backdrop.

“No thanks,” you say as you turn down her offer. “Unlike you, killing doesn’t make me happy. I need to find Hom.”

Hiss rolls her eyes.
“It’s not the kill-you know what? Whatever. I need to find whoever’s in charge here. And how are you planning on finding him in the first place?”

Sorry about the delay on this one, had a phone call.

>Skinshedder

You take advantage of the clearing that Hiss has hewn through the chaos of battle to drag your Skinshedder out of your pack and drink it. You need a form that can fly, with good eyesight, something that can survey the battlefield...

You diminish and curl in on yourself before taking the form of a huge wedge-tailed eagle. Getting off the ground is actually pretty hard but once you get high enough to soar it becomes surprisingly easy. You barely have to flap your wings at all!

You can see from above the patterns you couldn't see from below. Up here the chaos resolves into a mostly ordered group. You can clearly see the main line of conflict between the King's host and Hiss' forces.
It looks like you're winning. They really weren't ready for Hiss' trick with the boats.

It doesn't take you long for you to pick out Hom from up here, his true form is unmistakeable. The pig-offal monster is raging through the front line, burying soldiers beneath waves of entrails and blubber. His three sub-heads scream in pain as Hom is hacked at and cut, his body slowly reforming around the wounds.

He is leaking from dozens of spots and his slug-like tail has nearly been severed entirely. It's hanging on by only a thread. He lashes out with his tentacles but does little damage with them, his main offense coming from his disgusting bulk as he simply rolls over men and suffocates them. Many flee rather than face the abomination head on.

As you watch, one of the last surviving archer-towers pivots and Hom screams as arrows find their mark again and again in his soft flesh. He heals over them but these are the same alchemically treated arrows as those that had rained down upon you in the crossing! Hom's screams grow louder as he starts to burn from within.

Helping Hom won't do any good until you take out those archers first! And how dare they do that to one of your creations! Do they have any idea how long it took you to make him?

You fold your wings and immediately fall into a steep dive. Too bad you can't drop any potions while you're in bird form, that'd be the easiest way to do this. But you have a few other ideas.

>Just swoop in and rake the hell out of them.

>Swoop in and retake human form atop the archer-tower.

>Swoop in and retake human form atop the archer-tower.

You let your dive curve out, flying in just above the started archer's heads and reforming atop the wooden tower itself. You hit your head on the side but that's fine, the Champion's Elixir prevents you from feeling it.

You're already moving before they can react, drawing sword and extending thorn. What follows isn't a pleasant experience.. They punch and kick and stab at you but with your skin toughened to steel there isn't much they can do. Blood splatters the floor and you do your best not to be sick.
This will get easier at some point.

Hom bellows as he sees you, lumbering away from the fight with several spears jammed into his burning body.

"Oh dear, let me look at that."
You pull a Heal-All from your bandoleer and pour it down his ragged throat-hole. He'll probably need more than that but combined with the Regen just one should be enough to tie him over for now. Hom groans as you take hold of a spear shaft and pull it out of him, picking out each thorn in his side. The smell of rooting meat and pig blood fills the air.
"And your tail...are you alright?"

"aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

You don't know what that means so you settle for just stepping in and wrapping your arms around one of his less-disgusting parts. It's very warm and very sticky. Fortunately you're already covered in blood anyway.
"I shouldn't have left you out here alone. I'm so sorry. Now come on, we've got to get you out of here."

Hom follows you, slowly transforming back into human form while you lead him by the hand back towards the river banks.
"Just take one of these boats back and rejoin your sister. Be good, alright?"

Hom nods and you watch him leave. You don't know what you would have done if you'd found him dead. You've already made too many mistakes in raising him and you'll be damned before you make another. He has to get back to safety.

>Get some brewing done by the shore.

You wave goodbye to Hom as his boat sets back towards the other side and then think for a moment. You know what? They don't need you in the battle right now. You can get some brewing done.
You squat down, taking out your waterlogged pack and setting up your cauldron. You also take the time to properly dry your Caster.

Idk man killing the wizard is probably smarter. Change that magetheft to a heal all for my vote.
>>
>Dispel
>Snakebreaker
>Magetheft
>Knockout Brew

You prepare four potions and dry out your Caster, slotting the Magetheft into your bandoleer as you do so. Behind you the battle rages unchanging.
Or is it?

You begin to hear horns in the distance. Long slow ones mixed together to form some kind of signal. What's going on?
You scramble back up towards the fight and rub your eyes. The battle is draining away, soldiers fleeing back away from the river. The King's forces are retreating. Has Hiss won already?

>Retake bird form.

You can't see shit from down here! You return to your eagle form and clumsily take to the air as you focus mainly on gaining altitude enough to soar. From up here you can see the battlefield in all its gory glory.

And you can indeed confirm that the King's men are breaking, retreating. They're falling back down the sides and parting along the middle, leaving Hiss' army free to triumphantly charge down between them. From down there it must look like a grand opportunity.

But from up here you can see the trap.

The horns sound again and in the distance you see the gleam of metal and the rising cloud of dust. Knights!
Hundreds of mounted warriors, each one clad in the same perfect plate that you had seen before. Each one is alchemically dosed, some of them still knocking back potions as they charge. You can't identify them but you can make an easy guess. Endurance potions. Strength enhancers. All what they need to lift their massive swords and spears. Long lances of solid steel, impossible to lift with normal hands, are hefted with relative ease.

And they're closing fast! The horses they ride are a far cry from the horses you've known. Every man here is rich or noble or both and so they only have the finest of the finest, no doubt imported from Jheri. Many of them are atop even stranger creatures, war-horses who have had some kind of magic or alchemy involved in their breeding. Steel-skinned creatures with eyes aflame. Each one is probably worth more money than you've ever seen in your life.

They had been waiting for Hiss to fully commit her forces to the other side of the river.
The King's men keep retreating, leaving a clear path for the monstrous cavalry of Taldenral to advance.
You watch your army slow as they see the horses ahead. Some of them are already starting to flee. But they can't outrun this.

Fine, let's not use that.
But surely you'll agree a coordinated rattle will disrupt the charge, right?
>>
>Find Hiss!

You wheel back down towards your forces, doing your best to pick out Hiss. It isn't too hard. She's right near the front.
You begin your transformation while you're still in the air, regaining human form as you descend the last few feet. You land on your feet and stagger around a little.
"Knights!," you cry out.

"Yeah thanks Cennen, I've seen them."

"Do you have any rattlers nearby? We need to line them up before they hit!"
You'd judge there to be less than a minute remaining before the cavalry arrives.

Hiss pats you on the head as she walks past you. She's advancing towards the knights alone.
"There's nothing to worry about. Everyone fall back! I'll kill t-"

There's a strange heat-shimmer in the air around her and Hiss jumps back as a slim figure in a hooded brown cloak appears by her side, staff in hand.
The staff points at Hiss and strikes her with a plume of flame. It doesn't hurt her but it takes advantage of the fact that both of her feet are off the ground to knock her high into the air. You watch open-mouthed as Hiss is sent flying back hundreds of feet towards the river.

The wizard prepares to follow her.

The wizard vanishes in a blast of flame, chasing after Hiss to continue vanquishing her. There's a muffled explosion in the river just a moment later. You're not worried about Hiss however. She can absolutely take care of herself. But what are you going to do about all of these knights?

You press your hands together and pray as hard as you can, imploring every rattler to make their way to the front lines NOW. They should already be nearby!
Your prayer quickly takes effect, snakes worming their way up front as the rest of the army begins to retreat in vain.

Luckily Hiss kept her court close to hand so she could continue to use Royal Blood so you soon find yourself with a surplus of snakes. Now what?

They snake breakers are preventative, the Danger flask is not. It's literally using it after the fact. The snakebreakers will at least fuck up their lines some which might save lives. The Danger flask only matter if this works in the first place.
>>
>>46680769
Not saying we should use it, but if I recall correctly It was a snakebreaker mixed with snake blood and strong poison. It will certainly be awful to whoever gets hit by it, but why should it have a greater range than an ordinary snakebreaker?

Because the snakebraeker has a much greater range than an explosive, and the more powerful reagents you add to a potion the exponentially stronger it gets.

Right? It can probably fuck up anything mortal that is even nicked by the scales which can penetrate anything short of a stone wall and probably affects spirits. It probably will lease a toxic cloud as well which is the reason we need to not be anywhere near it when it goes off but that's about it.

Because they can collect themselves and try again?
>>
>>46681106
Because it makes some distance to deploy it without getting iffy on the friendly fire aspect. They've gotten pretty close by this point!

Also the rattles don't autowin the battle, they just tilt the advantage massively in the snake's favor. Morale is huge in combat but they're not going to just give up and go home immediately.

Anyway I'm calling it for the Danger Flask.
>>
>>46681179
Well that's what danger flask anons are voting for. Because that's what it says we're doing in the prompt.

>>
>>46681188
Yeah, because we cant just chase them and make them scatter or take prisoners. We have to absolutely destroy them!!

We should probably have all the snakes with strong scale arts move to the front to act as a buffer from any stray shrapnel as well. And drop the flask well away from our forces.

Of course not, you have to realize anon, most anons in this quest are impulsive assholes who want to press the button no matter how badly it fucks everything up. Look at how anons instantly voted for a weapon from the Duke instead of anything remotely useful for construction or building.

>DANGER

You do your best to rally the snakes forward with prayer, calling them to the front. Many of them are wearing plate armour and holding swords and spears. You guess not every snake can really trust in its Art like Hiss or Zigzag.

They all know you. You might be human but your the Queen's consort, you have her authority. And now's the time to test it.
"Rattlers to the front!," you bellow. "Those with strong scales too! Go! Go! Go!"

You sound tired and hoarse but in the end it has effect, serpents springing into action around you. You almost didn't think you had it in you to get their attention but how about that? They respect you.

And not a moment too soon for the thunder of augmented hooves now drowns out all other sound.
You start running back and plug your ears as a dry chorus of rattles briefly fills the world.

You like to think that you're extremely resilient to Rattle Art by now and you'd be right. But being so near so many of them is taking its toll even on you.
Plugging your ears does nothing. You can FEEL it.

You feel your stomach briefly overturn but you manage to hold yourself steady. This is fine. This is nothing! You didn't live through the rattles of the Serpent King and Snake Empress just to fall for this! Long experience and fortitude pulls you through after spending only a second dazed.
The men around you are not so lucky. There was a reason Hiss organized the first mass-rattle to be on the boats spearheading the crossing, before any human allies arrived. You watch helplessly as your own army begins to break under the force of Serpent Art, nearly every nearby human who isn't a living corpse turning and running like cowards. What had been an unsteady retreat in the face of cavalry has become a rout.
If these knights aren't turned aside here, they'll run everyone all the way back into the river like children.

Fortunately neither knight nor steed is immune. The charge slows and then stops as reins are pulled and horses stumble. Many knights are unseated entirely as their horses panic and try to turn, leaving them dead in the water as they are run down by their own brothers behind them. The screams of horse and man fill the air as the charge stalls...and stops.
Where there was once a plate-clad hammer ready to descend there is now just a disorganized crowd of confused men and rearing horses. Most of them aren't actually running but they aren't continuing their charge either.
Only a few knights are able to hold firm and keep their mounts steady enough and a moment later those doomed few charge into the line. Some of them are even briefly successful, massive lances goring through a few unlucky snakes or dropping those with Scale Art but no Dragon Scales, their skin unharmed but their insides pulped.
But they are just a few drops of rain where there was once a storm and they are quickly dragged off their horses. Their vaunted armour does little then and you can only watch as they desperately fight in vain.

Their souls are stolen within seconds and from then it's just a matter of slowly dismantling their plate so that their comatose bodies can be devoured en-masse. You watch a screaming horse ride by, Zigzag latched onto it's underside like a bloated tick.

The rest of the snakes cheer and start to advance forward to attack the rest but you step in front of them.
"Stop! Fall back! Make distance!"
All but a few obey your order unquestioningly.

The knights are still not yet vanquished. While their charge might be broken they are still an incredibly formidable fighting force when together and they could easily rally any moment now. You don't really want to do this but it has to be done. You have to remove them.
You rescue the Danger Flask from the pack and use the Skinshedder to transform back into the eagle. You soar upwards with Danger Flask in talons.
Below you the snakes are backing off, widening the distance between them and the main mass of knights.

It's time.

It occurs to you that it's a little bit too late to back out now. You're fully committed to crushing humanity under Hiss' boot. If you were going to back out, you probably should have done it back when she was rounding up villagers into mass graves or the like. You fly above the centre of them, close your eyes, and let go.

You can't stop yourself from opening your eyes again. You need to see it happen.
The bottle blossoms in the midst of the recovering horseman. None of them even have time to notice it before it ignites. A pillar of white fire leaps up and quickly swallows them up before expanding outwards.

From way up here you can barely hear the explosion and you can't hear the screams at all. The poisoned fireball expands soundlessly and blooms in a way akin to some kind of blasphemous flower. And beneath it, a rain of deadly shrapnel that kills all it touches and strikes the land barren.
From up here there's a kind of perverse beauty to be found in it. You don't see the people swallowed. You only see alchemy and Snake Art twinned in glorious and terrifying unison.

There are no survivors. You accept this. That is as it should be.

You return to the ground, your back to the massacre. The snakes crowd around you, cheering your name. You find yourself lifted up by a dozen hands and subjected to a stream of adulation.
How about that? You finally won them over. They love you now.

It isn't long before they leave you behind however, snakes and corpse-soldiers charging forward to finish the retreating army. They want you to come with them.

Well, the blast radius is a lot smaller. And it doesn't actually have any lingering radiation, just venomed shards lying all over the place. And the explosion is less of a vaporization and more of 'burn all the features from your face' incineration kind of deal.
>>
>>46682420
are those venomed shards still there poisoning the land and anyone who treads upon it? If so you have your radiations stand in and it for all intents and purposes a fantasy version of a tac nuke.

You have now gained an explanation of the Danger Flask! Because you sure saw what it did now.

>Created by combining an empowered Snakebreaker with snake blood, venom of the Serpent Queen as well as a direct infusion of the Queen's Art.
>Much like the Hissbrew, the Danger Flask becomes not just a brew but also a wordly incarnation of Hiss' inner self and desires.
>The first effect is that of a large explosion of white flame. This is enough to incinerate humans in the vicinity of the flask and should mutilate/kill all others in the primary blast radius. If nothing else they will be struck blind.
>The secondary blast radius stretches much further than the primary and is filled with envenomed scales that can pierce all mundane and most magical forms of defence. The venom is identical to the Queen's and will thus kill immediately. As an additional effect, anywhere a scale falls is rendered barren.
>Most scales are limited to secondary blast radius but stray scales can fly in random directions for potential miles.

>Find Hiss.
>Stay behind to help care for the wounded.

You wordlessly shake your head and stay back as the serpents and the dead charge forward. You've already done enough. You remember a certain conversation you had with Aashenpreet in Lombai. That seems so naive in hindsight.
But you can try your best anyway.

You turn your back and open up your pack, walking among the fallen snakes and tending to them. Some of them you can save with a quick Heal-All, some you can't. One of them is in the far back, too far to even have been struck by a knight.
She's bent double with a single black scale lodged in her chest. You leave her be. There's no saving that one.

And so you continue with this as best you can for the next few minutes. Small good works still hold moral value, right? You're not sure.

Inevitably however, you are interrupted by Hiss as she walks up to you. She's carrying the wizard over one shoulder, hood undone to reveal long red hair. She's remarkably jaunty and has even found the time to shapeshift away all the blood and grime, making it look more like she just stepped out from a high society ball than the battlefield.
"Hi Cennen! I've got a pet wizard now! What are you up to?"

She looks out beyond you and whistles.
"Was that you? Nice. You saved me from having to do it myself."
She drops the wizard on the ground and sits down beside you, one hand around your shoulder and holding you close. She's very cold.
"I'm so proud of you, Cennen. I knew you had it in you."

You don't reply. Eventually she takes a long hard look at you.

Hiss' smile quickly fades away.
"Don't worry about it Cennen, you did what you had to do. And it was magnificent! I mean, I would have survived it bu-"

"That's not the point, Hiss. I just killed a lot of people who were just trying to protect their homes."

You're expecting Hiss to comfort you like she always does but this time as she does is let out a drawn-out sigh.
"Come ON! Do you have to get into one of these funks every single time? I just talked you out of one this morning! I've been trying to be patient with you but at this point it's stopped being endearing."

"Oh well, sorry for the inconvenience."
You do your best to sound as sarcastic as possible.

Hiss taps your head hard enough to set your ears ringing.
"Snap out of it! Shit happens and you just got to deal!"

When you fail to respond she lets go of you and sits back.
"Is everything I do so unpalatable to you?"

"Pardon?"

"You promised me this morning that you'd follow me to glory. Again. You say that a lot. But it's evidently a pretty rocky path if you fall over crying every three steps of the way. I have always placed my trust in you and every time you refuse to trust me or the path I've set ahead of you is a little betrayal. Ones I've chosen to ignore before now but this? This is starting to get pathetic."

"Hiss, I-"

She rises to her feet and all compassion on her face is gone, replaced only with sneering contempt.
"I'm sick of being the only one who has to be strong in this relationship. You knew this would happen and yet you swore yourself to me anyway. Am I supposed to believe that to be all lies? But look, your brand is gone now! You are no longer my servant nor my tool and maybe that's for the best. So unless you're willing to actually help shoulder the burden for once you can just go run off and cry. I ill need a servant such as you."

She lifts the unconscious wizard back up and starts walking away.

Her argument is a simplification, in this case its not her that he should blame but himself. But its a difficult situation to resolve.

I still think that were we to share our work on soul alchemy with the humans it would tilt the balance in their favor

SHE LIES! She lies and hides things from us all the damn time. She openly believes human are inferior and not worth shit, and will let snakes run roughshod over them because of it.

It wouldn't help all that much, and Hiss would kill all alchemist's like she's probably going to do when she wins.

>Shout an insult to her back.

Hiss is the worst but we're gonna follow her like a puppy it seems. Perfect time now that she's disgusted with us too.

I'd change my vote to insult just anything to not follow her. Hiss is the worst.

All this shit that we could have avoided by just being a bit less of a pussy and saying we are okay.

I know
Slaves is a strong word.
the point i'm trying to make is that we are Hiss' only sense of right and wrong. If we aren't here then who knows what will happen when she gets on top. I just want us to get off this our high horse and deal with things honestly. Cennen is NOT a good person and its starting to bother me how everyone pretends hes some type of victim of circumstance. we stopped being that a long time ago.

Not Enjoy
no man enjoys going to war. but having this reaction every time we need to get our hand dirty is counterproductive.
