Okay, so I've actually been trying to put together a catfolk race that's unique and not retarded, so let me run this by you guys; why you in particular will make good sense as I go.
So a Wizard DID do it; but as a vindictive hex on another Wizard's favorite niece; the race are actually a variety of humanoids who've contracted the same contagious hex. On one hand, this magical malady makes them into something of the world's gypsies, where every soccer-mom peasant is convinced they kidnap children to make more of them. On the other, they've got serious props from magical academia and leadership, because the hex in question makes them highly resistant to other curses, most importantly necromancy. Considering recent history includes a sizable undead uprising and the near subjugation of the continent by a lich? That's really kinda neat, and lead to a great increase in population during the ensuing war.
As a result, we have lithe and dexterous catfolk with a semi-nomadic culture who are natural enemies of undead with just a touch of Egyptian flavor to culture and designs.
