Steamforged announced upcoming KS for a Dark Souls boardgame, can we hype yet?
Also KS general I suppose.
>>
>>46631525
No, but you can get Cease & Desist.
>>
Everytime I hear they've announced a DS game it then just disappears
>>
Makes just as much sense a a super mario boardgame.
>>
>>46631732
Isnt that sort of mario party?
>>
>>46631567
Seeing as they're working with Bandai Namco I doubt they'll be getting C&D'ed
>>
>>46631525

What kind of game? Based on that image I am presuming set in Lordran, but I am having trouble imagining a DS board game that can capture anything akin to the experience of the original.

Which is fine. They can do something different with it. But that doesn't answer the question of what that is.
>>
>>46631525
While they look pretty good, the fucks got Smough's helmet wrong , he doesn't see out of the face, he has a visor slit under the face's chin.
>>
Well, their first game, Guild Ball was small but well received. Let's see how they handle this.
>>
>>46631525
I'm gonna need some sauce on that

>tfw your gpu decides to take a shit three days before souls 3 releases
>>
>>46631791
I think he means the OP should cease and desist.
>>
Guildball is the best wargame I've ever played and doing my best to become a tourney regular has been nothing but a blast both with the community and the devs. I have pretty much total faith in them to make this good, though obviously I want some gameplay examples before I pledge anything. That said, they are previewing this weekend at Salute, so expect lots of stuff coming in.

Only thing I'm worried about is them accidentally copying Kingdom Death, but we'll see. I think they are really excellent devs.
>>
>>46631525
I hadn't noticed the testicles-with-eyes-chin until now.
>>
>>46631525
Only care if the Spider Sisters, Priscilla; Queen of the Painting and Miss Mega-Milk receive miniatures.
>>
>>46632256
I think it will be more of a gritty Descent clone before it becomes a KD clone. Beyond the mood, the gameplay ideas are different.
>>
>>46632372
I more meant the "ai" system they hinted at. I think KD's implementation of ai decks and hit locations is fucking brilliant, but I also wanna see other options for it. I'm not expecting a settlement thing in the DS game of course.

This raises the question of scale.
Half the monsters you face are horrifically towering things that even at 25-30mm are going to be 30cm or more large.
Unless scale becomes mutable or they skip all/almost all of the monsters to just focus on a tiny handful of known characters.

You know, for a long moment there I was wondering why you posted a Kingdom Death picture before it occurred to me.

Yeah, I was joking about her size but it actually would become a problem for certain enemies/monster. I guess the miniatures would only consist of humanoids and smaller creatures.

That's where Smough's actual eye-holes are. The head on his helmet is purely decorative and actually rests above his head.

Pretty hype. It will be way easier for me to games in of this rather than Descent or Kingdom Death because I can rope in my /v/idya friends pretty easily instead of having to rely on my board game group for games.

I've also picked up some Guild Ball. The game is great and the minis are a fantastic quality for a kickstarted game, even when you compare it to the 3D renders. With that in mind I'm fucking hyped looking at Oreo and S'mores in the OP.

....Soooo why did people not like DaS-2 as much?

Setting aside it's superior mechanics, and inferior level transitions.

It's nowhere near as cult-classic as DaS1, but it isn't clunky either.
>>
>>46640905
I didn't like it because it's linear AS FUCK.
Most of the bosses suck and some are even repeated in a shitty way (HAHA YOU FIGHT TWO DRAGON RIDERS! XD).
Oh the bosses sucking, they're mostly easy, don't have a large variety of interesting attacks, and basically spam 2-3 moves at you.
The last boss was especially shitty and boring (avoid the cloud whooooooooooooo).
Weapons are mostly uninteresting, there's not as many lazer/explosion swords.
A lot of the generic enemies are fucking lame or have annoying mechanics.

Did I mention your shit breaking 24/7?
>>
>>46640905
>superior mechanics
The only good thing was power stance, which almost no one ever used it, and incremental hollowing. Agility was an abortion, hitboxes were wonky on everything, bosses were boring and constantly relied on killing people with tracking overheads, the writing was sub par, Soul Memory was atrocious, there was obviois power creep, and they just kept buffing Katanas over and over again

Beating anything never felt like an accomplishment, rather who whole game just felt like a complete chore, and it left more questions than answers and introduced pointless olot elements to introduce a shitty Cycle narrative that was honestly done much better in other games.

In all honesty, you could skip 2 to go straight into 3 without really missing much at all.
>>
>>46634779
Video games don't often translate well to tabletop because video game mechanics often only work well IN video games. If talking about RPGs it works even worse because even most of the mechanics that could work are there for the sake it being a video game and are just plain stupid in an RPG.

I've always been an advocate that if you want to run a campaign based on a video game, don't try to emulate the GAME. Care only about the aesthetics and lore, not the mechanics, and you'll have a much better time of it than you would worrying about how to stat endurance meters and bonfire respawning.

>>

>>
>>46642407
Demon's Souls is clunky and broken so if you play it at all, make it first.
>>
>>46641140
This, and frankly the game felt half-assed as hell. Like, the level design itself just felt rushed and disconnected. The whole 'take an elevator up from a windmill and come out underground' segment in particular, but the game was basically one portal area and a shitload of instance portals.

Enemies too, in placement and implementation. There were a lot of "kill rooms" that were essentially a room with a small door filled with some mob and if you went in without knowing beforehand you got fucking rushed and killed. Just shit game design all around.

Hmm. Now I am imagining a system where you spend stamina on moves with various inititive values, and your move plays out at whatever speed it was....Resulting in Ornstien and Smough rape. The game has to have that at least.

Even a skirmish miniatures game with various dark souls characters could be neat.

Ya know, i laughed an sort of agreed with your post at first. But no.

Its actually a rather different thing.

Dark Souls was specifically crafted by a crazy asian man who seriously loved and wanted to try the sorts of worlds and stories that say....Dungeons and Dragons for instance was designed to portray.

The issue really comes from the the fact that in D&D damage is random and frequently expected. In Dark Souls damage is ALWAYS your own damn fault.

I just started reading Band of Bastards though. Maybe that will help with this problem.

We don't know if it's going to be grid based tactics. The board could be locations with unlimited space or slots like in Dead of Winter. The player can even be not represented as a miniature. Or just a really tiny one.
>>
>>46646776
>>46646216

>scale
It by all likelihood won't be in a consistent scale of any kind.

I do think this could work though, and it could go several ways in it's design with being incredibly abstract and having the character move about different areas on a board fighting the various challenges there or it could go for a far more literal interpretation as more of a dungeoncrawler. I suspect it's going to be more of the former though, miniatures for boss fights but not regular enemies.
>>
"Further to the exciting announcement we made last week, it's time to share some details about the upcoming Dark Souls board game.

Designed from the ground up, the Dark Souls board game is a brutally hard exploration miniatures game for 1-4 players. Prepare to die. Because this will be the hardest board game you have ever played.

Featuring an exciting "fast setup, long reveal" mechanic that gets you into the game faster and builds the location as you explore. The sense of danger is palpable as you discover new locations and the monsters that inhabit these dark places. The core combat mechanic and enemy behavior system forces deep strategic play and clever management of stamina to survive.

The game will ship with numerous boss and mini-boss encounters, and as mentioned above, will utilize an innovative behavior mechanic that will mean no two encounters are ever the same, thus giving the game near infinite replayability.

Using our advanced miniatures pipeline and working with one of the finest board game manufacturers in the world, the quality and detail in the miniatures will be world class. As Dark Souls fans, and with the entirety of the Dark Souls universe available to us, one of the hardest decision has been to narrow down which enemies and bosses to include in the core game. We wanted to be sure to use both old favorites as well as new enemies from Dark Souls 3.

We are pleased to reveal that one of the boss fights included in the core game will be the Dragon Slayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough.

From the start of this project, Steamforged Games has worked closely with the team at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment; Dark Souls fans can be sure that this board game will give an experience that captures the very essence of the original video games.

We launch the Kickstarter project on the 19th April."

Well, that's something.

So we're probably going to get the 'iconic' enemies of each. the ones that feature in the commercials and such, rather then the unique and popular ones.
I'm interested but I hold little hope for it personally.
>>
>>46647645
I don't think Steamforged will make it RNG instadeath difficult. They built their first game, guildball, from the ground up with competitive depth and fairness to the player in mind, and did a good job. Though it sounds like this game is either cooperative or hybrid competitive/cooperative, I doubt they will suddenly switch gears and say fuck the player.

Yeah, I'm kinda dubious after reading that too. I don't mind losing in Elder Sign, for example, because it's part of the learning curve, but if the game is just going to be an unavoidable deathfest because "lol that's what you people like about Dark Souls," that doesn't really inspire much confidence.

>>
>>46647769
>>RNG difficulty
>What's this?
DSII had a major problem with conflating player deaths with difficulty. Many of the features advertised as being difficult presented the player not with a real challenge of skill, but simply slapping you in the face with a near-impossible obstacle passable only after dying repeatedly. Not as in "it takes a few tries to beat", but rather "the solution is visible only in hindsight." There is simply no indication of the threat until a response is too late.
Take for example the area in the Undead Crypt where you're dropped into a large chamber full of headstones. Thanks to the drop, you cannot see the layout of the room until you're already in it. Once you drop, you have a scant few seconds to immediately rush the specific hollows who, rather than attacking, instead run away to ring bells which summon an unlimited number of pyromancer ghosts, who are unaffected by the maze of tombstones and use powerful AoEs in a tight space. There are several paths out of this room, all but one of which lead to dead ends. Thanks to the way the game generates Firestorm's pillars in tight hallways, this results in certain death as what's supposed to be a scattered attack which lands only one hit instead becomes a death ray that lands three at once and fills the entire area. Killing the ghosts does nothing, because they will respawn every time the bells are struck.
One of the bells is down said dead-end hallway.

The only possible solution is to know where the exit is before dropping down, which is only possible by panning around the camera after your first effectively unavoidable death.

Also, terrible hitboxes mean you often take damage after what should have been an effective dodge.
And bullshit overhead tracking.
>>
>>46648284
Yeah, stances and weapon switching are definitely a thing that I plan on doing, as are "special moves", which is basically what weapon arts are.

>>
>>46648503
It was definitely a lot less aweful than being a level 54 guy getting either invaded or matched with some level 165 Havel Mages with an enchanted RITwinblade.
And yes, this happened to me. On multiple occasions. I'd righter fight a dozen minmaxed giantdads than a continuous stream of over leveled assholes, especially since in the previous example I could eventually scale up to their capabilities and equipment to meet the challenges, while it's near impossible in DS2 since those faggots just keep scaling higher as well. It also punishes players who want to be able to play through the game multiple times and/or play different areas with more than 2-3 types of weapons.

Then you never sunk 4 different character runs or tried to give co-op support much in those games.
The whole system was bonkers, and it was a major problem for many players who wanted to be able to enjoy repeatability, test out multiple weapons, or even just wanted to use those rings to have fun and play alongside your friends.

So basically, despite respeccong being an option, it wasn't really all that useful since Soul Memory all but required you to build entirely new character if you wanted to upgrade and try out different Weapon and armor combos, making fashion/cosplay Souls much weaker and impractical than it was in DS1
it was a multiplayer killer, and only went to make the entire online community even worse. It caused rampant escalation issues, especially since trying to get Souls to buy more items only jacked up your SM, so you had to keep pushing more and more into poorly balanced waters.
The only way to mitigate it was to use that ring they patched in, but all it served to do was handicap players and force you to munchkin run if you wanted to get it early enough to matter.
At least in DS1, if one had the skill or patience they could easily deal with all the giantdads and other minmaxers. In DS2, there's virtually no way to close the gap other than to be an exploitive shit like the overleveled assholes who are invading you.

Seriously, fuck Soul Memory with a rusty lucerne. If it wasn't for the fact I like helping other people with runs and bosses, and hosting Fight Clubs, I would've gone offline ages ago.

This. So much this.

It's very easy for a Dark-Souls-like game, either vidja or in this case, tabletop, to latch on to what is actually bad game design, because of all the advertising and culture about Dark Souls being hard as to what defines it, rather than all the stuff the games manage to do right, like great environment and enemy design, interesting combat that requires patience and timing more than item stats and so on. Sudden difficulty spikes of the beating your head against a wall bullshit kind of situations reminiscent of so many bad games trying to pad their run time through impossible to predict level design is the consistently worst aspect bit of Dark Souls games, not the thing that should be focused on. And yet all too easily is.

Blight Town's toxic-damage sniper midgets for another major example, though at least the level design let you deal with them without death if you were super careful and observant. Mostly.

I really hope the devs of this game don't do that. But they so easily could, so... fuck it, I'm gonna have to see more of the models and get in on the kikestarter for them alone and just hope the game itself isn't shit as a secondary thing.
>>
>>46649626
Damn those midgets. All of the lonesome ones are easy enough to deal with if you pay attention, but that cul-de-sac with three or four of them behind a narrow little branch-bridge was the worst. I used to rush them to try and kill as many as I could before succumbing to the poison, since there was no way to have your shield facing all of them.
>>
>>46649702
Thinking about that more, It was a smart design decision to not have them re-spawn once they'd been killed. A lot of the bigger or more annoying non-boss enemies were like that, too. It was an interesting design choice, justifying certain tough or painful enemies by making them only a problem once, and I wonder how this Cardboard Souls will handle that kind of thing.
>>
>>46646009
I heard he was inspired by game books by former GW founders.
>>
>>46649702
It was possible, you just had to pay attention and remember to carry some blooming grass. Also, that shield the bandits start with is good for that area.
>>
>>46648317
It's the difference between having an objective marker on the other side of the field and dying 15 times trying to cross it, and having a sign next to the field saying "Danger! Mines."

Neither makes it any easier to get across the field, but at least you know what's going on, what's killing you, and can try and figure how to get around it, instead of just going by trial and error with no clues as to what's going on.
>>
>>46649783
The Spider Shield is great, and you don't have to be a bandit to get it, you find it about that Giant Rat if you drop down from the first butcher's room.

Thinking back, I want to say the midgets' area had three you could face pretty safely, but the fourth was off on the other side and would invariably shoot you in the back or flank while you were dealing with his friends-- who you had to deal with fast, or he would get you a second time. I guess if I farmed more grass it would go a little better, but I always found that tedious, especially since you got the red or purple stuff so much more often.
>>
>>46649783
>>46649932
Yeah the game gave you that shield shortly before you got to the place you'd need it, which is good design.
You could also snipe the little bastards right back with poison arrows if you could use one of the basic bows that took pretty much nothing in terms of stat upgrades to use. Though it was a pain in the arse.

>>46649742
It really was a small mercy to not have them respawn, but honestly I think the game would have lost nothing by not having them in the first place. Or have them do poison not Toxic damage at least. They'd still be annoying but not quite so annoying.
They're not the kind of problem I think could be modelled well in a boardgame though since so much of dealing with them is about long term preparation (gathering moss/arrows/items) and then timing in movement to avoid their darts. That doesn't translate well to set-up a dungeon and go forth gameplay.
>>
>>46650037
Even the ear;y ones were a pain, because while you could handle them pretty safely once you know they were there, the way you found out they were there in the first place was usually getting hit once, which was often a death sentence unless you were close to a bonfire or decided to use a grass-- further lowering your stock for when you would really need them, against the group.
>>
>>46649626
Why would anyone live in Blighttown? The Depths is the place where people go when they're banished from the Undead Burg, and it's full of giant rats, basilisks, the Gaping Dragon, and poo water. And even they think that Blighttown is so bad they had to build a gate to keep everything in Blighttown out.

Speaking of which, I gathered an awful lot of souls of proud knights down in Blighttown... Which seems like the result of an ill-fated crusade to purge the place.

Shit you've done a lot more work than I have.

I had the idea of each weapon class having specific moves. Each move has a damage value, a stamina cost, a damage type, and a speed value.

So your weapon stats are going to be a page or two each, unfortunately. The trade-off is with a standard straight sword, you can slash, thrust, pommel strike, two handed slash, and half-sword.

Damage types are mostly for armor, so a slashing attack might do half damage to plate.

I love the frames system though, and generic weapon attacks means more focus on other things and less walls of text to read.

i just simply don't have the means of production. as of right now each play set of my game costs about 80 dollars. i would much rather sell the distribution rights to a larger company that has the equipment to mass produce and market it.

how far-fetched is the idea that a gaming company would look at my game and want to buy the rights?

i'm assuming because you're on the internet you must be an expert in this subject.

>>
>>46660368
typically the one thing companies have in abundance is ideas. ideas are cheap as hell.

you could survey places and see if any of the publishers have a process for receiving pitches. If any reputable company says "YES ACTUALLY we do have a slush pile for game pitches," you can give it a shot. otherwise, you'd be stuck hustling in some other way to get your game noticed, like doing indie sales or events at cons to build publicity.

if you have a full finished game and a solid knowledge of its production costs you're a million years ahead of most amateurs with dreams and I applaud you for your hard work, but i have a feeling that most publishers are already churning out all the games then can manage from designers they already know or from in-house dudes with big dreams.

thanks, we'll see. i've easily put a thousand hours into this game and i've only actually shown it to my girlfriend and the guy with whom i playtest it.

other than some slight balance issues it's pretty much done. i looked into patent law and that shit is impossible. i'm sort of a workaholic and now that it's done i need to actually do something with it before i get caught up designing my next game.

for what it's worth i can't find any games similar to it. i feel like most games i see try too hard to be like video games or simply imitate other games that already exist.

>>46662791

Naw, you are making it too hard.

Stamina, and HP aren't whats important.
Having to make calls and watch them play out is where the dark souls feel can come in during a game.

If you haven't tabletoped before, I'd recommend against trying to create a game from scratch.
I'd just rip off a game that can fit the tone you want and work from there.

>>46665881

The main idea I had, honestly, was the concept of your character's will to survive being a tangible resource. One that's invoked to stand up from massive injury, strike just one more blow, or hold the line against all odds.

The key being that you can only burn so bright for so long. "I fight for my children" might be motivating, but sooner or later you'll start to forget their faces under the pain of old injuries that never fully healed.
"I defend the weak" may be noble, but watching peasants scatter after your shield shatters may shatter your faith along with it.
What keeps you going when all other hope is lost?

The hope is to engender moments like that one with Sam and Frodo climbing the slope of Mount Doom. To be larger than life in a way that only the truly small can.

>>46660368

Your idea seems fucking great. I can't say I'd play it for certain (I have five games I haven't played yet on the phone I'm typing this from) but the idea of timing mechanics in tabletop is too good to pass up.
>>
>>46641049
At least the bosses were better than the bosses from Bloordborne. You can tell what is going on with bosses from DS2. In Bloodborne, it's like I'm fighting some kid's flash cartoon from 10 years ago. There's so little you can actually take in and learn when your bosses are covered with so much hair/moss/half-flayed skin that you can't tell what exactly they are. How many of you fought the Blood Letting Beast and thought, "Oh yeah, I know what that is. It's like a cleric beast but with half of it's skin flapping out and around all the time. Totally digestible."
