Dengar's good. Like, really good. Itms not a bad idea, due to his "reverse Predator" ability. Plus you get to reroll an additonal die if you're targeting a unique pilot. If you go with Dengar, you could also swap out Marksmanship for Predator and laugh as you are *almost* always rerolling 3 dice an attack.

Honestly, there are no truly "bad" ships to get. There are some lemons currently, but FFG tries to bump them back into play when they see a problem.

For Imperials, if a few more Ties is never a bad plan. Two more in Blister form would supplement the two from the starter set nicely, and round you out with most of the pilots. The Force Awakens starter is also a good purchase, as it comes with a pair of Tie/fo and some different cards. The two ties are drastically different in how they play, as well. Imperial Veterans and an Interceptor is also a good buy, as it gets you all the Interceptor pilots, Push the Limit, and all the Interceptors you are likely to need. Bombers aren't bad, but hold off on them until the Imperial Veterans pack comes out or until you get a Guidance Chip card. Which comes in the Tie Advanced Prototype, and is a fun little ship as well.

After that, just get what you think would be fun to play with. Tie Defenders are about to get a huge boost with Imperial Veterans.

Looking at the online Squad Builder, the Defender already looks bitchin with Rexler Brath.

The only bigger ship I look to be interested in is the Gozanti honestly, and I need at least two more regular TIEs for that I feel. I mostly bought the TFA box for the updated rules and stuff, but unless there comes a large roster of TFA ships soon, I'll likely stick with regular Imperials.

How valid a tactic is it to bring a gorillion TIE Fighters to a game?
>>
>>46634023

No but Twitter was what gave shipping morons a way to make people think their opinions were the majority's.
>>
>>46634023
Twitter lets you easily find others who share your ideas, which reaffirms them, and lets you be louder about them. That's why dirty commie countries block it and stuff. I'm sure we can find a way to tie this back into the star wars HoloNet or something.
>>
>>46633850

Chaztruck Blazzclump isn't just the youngest of the Blazzclumps, he's also the biggest. And ever since the Blazzclumps put down roots on Rhimjab 4 they've been supporters of the Empire. It was, after all, Imperial subsidiaries and grants which allowed the Blazzclump family to make their living farming Hukhuk beetles and the occasional Kakfu Triblump beast (the latter of which provides the Triblump leather so crucial to the manufacture of Triblump leather jackets).

Chaztruck joined the Imperial academy shortly after coming of age, just like his older brothers Chadbrick and Bretkharr. He joined with a gleam in his eye--patriotic through and through--and the notion that he would be serving a cause greater than himself.

Some of that gleam went away after the death of Bretkharr (Rebels destroyed the station he was on). More of that gleam went away when Chadbrick went MIA at Yavin.

A hard harvest year and shrinking Imperial subsidiaries have since put his parents off the family farm. Chaztruck does what he can to help them, financially, but a small stipend seems the most he can manage.
>>
>>46634083
>How valid a tactic is it to bring a gorillion TIE Fighters to a game?

It can work, but it's extraordinarily difficult to fly in a tournament setting. Eight, ten, twelve hours of flying seven ships while your opponents are mostly flying two or three, and the decision fatigue really starts to add up. You make the clock your enemy. And when the clock is your enemy, it's your opponent's friend.

Blunt Thundurr loved living on the Edge-- that was until suspected Rebel activity in the sector saw the shutdown of the space station Edge. He has since channeled his wit and passion into a military career. He sees a lot of opportunity for illicit business among the rank-and-file; far be it for Blunt Thundurr to pass up an easy cred.

As the saying goes "If you can't blunt Blunt Thundurr, you're going to get the thunder of Thundurr." Blunt knows this saying is going to take off, as he's already sold seven t-shirts with the saying on it. It's called 'growing the brand' and Blunt Thundurr is a natural.

That's another of his t-shirts. "The natural Thundurr of Blunt is better than the naturally blunt thunder of lightening". He's sold three of those.

Tie swarms (6 or more Ties) work well, actually. 8 is as high as it goes without breaking into an Epic game, and usually Howlrunner is in there somewhere. Although Youngster from the Gozanti is growing in popularity.

The biggest problem Tie Swarms run into, is getting two attack dice through on something with 3 Agility, a focus, and evade (i.e. Soontir Fel).

The Defender's main problem is the price tag. At 30pta base for PS 1, it's a super-fighter. Rexlar and Vessery are both great pilots, but prepare to dump about 40 points into them (or more). And the ship's key weakness is it's inflexible dial. Basically it's greens are all forward, it has a marvelous white K-turn, and it's 1 and 2 turns are red... So it tends to fly back and forth. The Tie Mk2 Ion Engine from the Punisher helps it by making all the banks green as well, but it still doesn't like turning. Imperial Veterans is going to have two titles for the Defender: the Tie/D, which lets you equip a 3pt or less cannon and shoot it along with your primary weapon; and the X-7 title which reduces it's cost by 2, removes the cannon and missile slot, and gives you a free evade anytime you take a 3, 4, or 5 speed maneuver.

>>
>>46634295
Almost. The list is more like:

>Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics
>Black Squadrons + Swarm Tactics x 4
>Black Squadron

That leaves you with a total of 98 points. One Black Squadron TIE is naked because he's at the end of the PS 8 chain, and thus, he has no need for a Swarm Tactics card. Spending those remaining 2 points is up to personal taste. I usually replace him with one of the 16-point named TIE/LNs.

>Learn to formation fly, and it becomes a hell of a lot easier.

This is true up to a point. You will usually have to break formation sooner or later, and usually sooner since the main strength of Academy TIEs is blocking.

>It also helps that Ties are expendable, and losing three isn't a problem.

This is less true. TIEs are not really all that expendable. The way X-wing plays out, you don't actually get much utility from squadron granularity. For a wide variety of reasons, a ship worth 36 points is usually much better than three TIEs worth 12 points each even though you lose all of it's utility if/when it is destroyed.

The expandability comes in greater with builds like:
>>46634798

Blockers often have a mediocre 2-dice damage output, and a low initiative for moving first. Prototype As with chaardan, Academy Ties, Bannana Pirate Z-95, etc. Barrel Roll is usually the more valuable repositioning action for these ships, but the fact remains they exist primarily to get in the way and fill 12-15pts. Their damage output is low so that they aren't expected to knock out an Ace if they chance a shot, unless that Ace is blocked. But at 12 or 15pts, their loss is hardly a setback for most lists.

Now cue Youngster with Expose, and suddenly for 4pts you can make an entire Tie Swarm 3-dice base attack. It eats your action, but there are other ways to get a Focus (bomber with shuttle title and Fleet Officer). Plus there are some Ties that simply don't care (Wampa), or naturally buff the damage output of surrounding Ties (Howl). In these cases the academies are very much expendable, blockers, and are a real threat due to sheer numbers of dice they can roll.

Big ships don't get Focus or Evade tokens (ever), and so they run off Energy instead. They start with a set amount, and then regenerate some each turn. If they do a maneuver that's too fast, they burn energy. A lot of their upgrades also burn energy to use. And of course there are cases like the Raider, which burns energy to KEEP FIRING, ASSHOLES!

High school. Dated a Yaoi fangirl of the first rank for a time. Hit a sticking point when she eventually decided that she was a gonna git me to fuck another guy while she watched. Well, I said no way ma'am, and that was that. Month later, a mutual friend tells me that she was over at Mrs. Yaoi's house when she finds a certain word document open. Turns out, Mrs. Yaoi had gone and used my name and physical description for a character in a yet-to-be-uploaded slashfic of hers. Needless to say, we had words and she agreed to delete the whole damn thing and never publish it else certain details of her hobbies would be made known to certain conservative relatives of hers.
So that's what it was. Any more questions?

I read both of those. They hold up surprisingly well today, although some things are obviously YA. There was a really cool book that crossed over the two books, with Obi-Wan and Anakin returning to a planet to complete a mission Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon had been on many years before.
>>
>>46637019

>>
>>46637052
Yeah, Jude Watson did both series. I seem to remember Anakin being pretty positively portrayed, sort of similarly to Jacen in the Young Jedi Knights books if you ever read those. Question: How does it portray Palpatine's relationship with Anakin?
>>
>>46637089
Somewhere halfway through True Colors. But it's readable up to about halfway into Order 66 when everything goes to hell in a handbasket
>>
>>46637089
I might be crucified, but I liked all of them. I liked the edgy viewpoint that the Jedi were aloof and heartless, and though the Mando wankery was present I never found it so overwhelming I couldn't stand it. I liked the Etain/Dar thing, I thought it was mostly well done.

I'm not sure why people hate it so much, I thought the glimpse into Mando culture was stronger than what's depicted in other mediums for sure.
>>
>>46637520
Is that where the Mandowanking comes in?
>>
>>46637487
I don't remember, sorry :/
>>
>>46637540
The Mandowanking is pretty clearly happening the most in True Colors when we actually have characters on Mandalore.

I'd personally say it's worth it to read all the way up to what's been written. The clone perspective is never really poorly done compared to the Mandowanking, and Imperial Commandos is actually pretty good.
>>
>>46637539
It's kinda like how Vikings are portrayed as noble warriors despite the fact that they were murdering rapists.

The original Mandalorians were terrible, awful people. The Modern Mandalorians are Death Watch (who take after the original Mandalorians) the Supercommandoes (who are honorable mercenaries), the New Mandalorians (who are pacifists) and the normal everyday civilians.
>>
>>46637609
Yeah, I agree.

>>46631619

>>
>>46637540
It builds up from Triple Zero and the short stories (Targets in Triple Zero and Odds in True Colors off the top of my head) but it's on a OK level up to the later part of True Colors where stuff gets a bit too much. Mind you it's just small details but enough to put a lot of readers off. In Order 66 however the mandowank is in full swing.

Now this is the place where i must tell you i'm a fan of the Republic Commando series (but not Traviss' later works. Wouldn't touch those with a 10-foot lightsaber pike) and i've read through them all several times. I do think, in my oppinion, that the mandowank is a bit much in the later books (True Colors, Order 66 & Imperial Commando) but not to the extreme degree that /swg/ makes it out to be.

I advise you to read through them all with a open mind and form your own opinion.
>>
>>46637631
Yeah, that makes sense.
Because the books are from the perspective of Mando's, I guess they look on their own culture and history with bias. Much like most countries today.

I always appreciated the whole Jaster Mereel arc, if you've read the True Colors comic.
I felt like her books tied well into that.

The original Mandalorians and the neo-Crusaders that would follow in the Old Republic era were what happens when a warrior culture never really calms down with modernization.

The big deal modern Mandos are actually the Protectors (supercommandos) who own pretty much the entire planet--considering the Mandalore has been Protector for a few generations straight--with the Death Watch acting as neo-neo-crusader terrorists.

Until we get to Clone Wars nuCanon. Then we have the New Mandalorians on the poles of the planet.

The regular people of Mandalore as of the EU Clone Wars (not the CGI show) are all basically Protectors in regards to their beliefs and cultural behavior. The warrior culture done right through moderation and mercenary work.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the Mandalorians. Trying to find a way to add an extreme parallel to the Death Watch in the New Mandos on the poles is actually a good move. I feel that having an extreme neo-neo-Crusader group isn't bad, nor is an extreme pacifist faction. The Protectors outnumbered the former in the EU, and the latter never existed until nuCanon.

It only went bad in my opinion when the Vizla assault on the Dutchess' city implied that it was actually the proper Mandalorian throne. Not, you know, the title of Mandalore, which it should have been.
>>
>>46637777
I didn't realize the New Mandalorians were on the Poles. I thought they were in the devastated wasteland regions that served as a natural barrier to the rest of the world.
>>
Say, what's Fantasy Flight's policy for replacing broken ships? I had no issues with replacing broken or missing stands, but what about ships? A few of mine have broken due to poor storage solution, and I'm looking to ask for replacements.
>>
>>46637814
I interpreted all the snow and whatnot as the poles. If it turns out it was some sort of irradiated wasteland portion of Mandalore, that's kind of...bleh.

It makes it more difficult to justify trying to blend them in with the rest of Mandalore as of the EU--having them on the poles made that easy enough--and I liked the idea of having a minority Mandalorian government being the only one that the Republic would interact with because they were the most peaceful; introducing even more political grey area in regards to how the Republic is treating Mandalorians as a whole.

I would like to be able to combine the Duchy into the rest of Mandalore as just another standalone faction. I think if I ever run games, I will. They'll just have little impact on Mandalore and its people outside of their cities as a whole, while also having the awkward situation of the Republic liking them because, hey, pacifists and political grey area.
>>
>>46637901

I'd mix it up a bit. A good portion of the planet is devastated and the safe areas are split between the Protectors, the New Mandalorians and the neutrals. The Protectors and New Mandalorians have about an even amount of influence but the neutrals are the plurality. The Republic only deals with the New Mandalorians because they're a peaceful government.

Expanded lore representation on Vader is really inconclusive, unfortunately. In some stories he's portrayed as an absolutely damaged psychopath, in others he's a relatively personable individual with an appreciation of the common folk and an extremely strong internal pain; in the latter he goes into a kind of kill-mode when its time for shit to go down, whereas in the former he seems to always be in it.
>>
>>46638412

Go with the OT. He's on a mission from god and he will kill people who get in the way of that or people who fuck up.

You never see him force choke a stormtrooper for not finding the plans on the Tantive IV, nor does anyone seem to bitch about him offing Ozzel.

It's entirely possible that he can be a ball of evil and still act as a competent leader 99% of the time.
>>
>>46638561
>be Evil guy

>Kill him

God Vader is such a douche
>>
>>46638608
I think he treated Darth as his first name.
>>
>>46638443

The inconsistency is because Vader is actually a very difficult character to write. Most of his personality doesn't come just from his dialogue. He's a combination of character design, voice acting, stunt acting, cinemotagraphy, and mythological throwback being made for the right movie at the right time.

Most of his personality is conveyed by the way he speaks and the way he moves. He has a very distinct, deliberate gate, and of course James Earl Jones's iconic voice added a massive amount to the character. Neither of these things translate well to the printed medium so writers have a hard time keeping true to his personality.

There's also the fact who Darth Vader actually is is not easy to peg down. There is no "slice of life" for the guy. He exists completely in the moment and is motivated entirely by single goals. And all of those goals are shown to be extremely personal. He didn't kill Ozzel because he's a ball of rage, he killed him because Ozzel fucked up his plans of capturing Luke.

When you take Vader out of anything involving Obi-Wan or Luke, he basically just exists in a vacuum. This is why so many portrayals of him in the EU feel inconsistent or out-of-character. Because locking down just what IS "in-character" for him is really hard to do.
>>
>>46638590
This is probably best. I always interpreted Vader (at least, before the prequels turned him into space Jesus) as just a really badass Gestapo officer who goes in with the troops and does well with them, but doesn't do well with the civilian populace or his higher officers.

Stormtrooper can't find the plans? He's just doing his job, tough bit, let's improvise and fix the situation. Admiral fucks up our jump out of hyperspace and gives the Rebels an advance warning that we're coming to crush them? Kill him, he fucked with my plans in a major way and he should know better.
>>
>>46638443
I run Vader as a guy who is only ever happy when he has an excuse to kill someone.

His only reason to continue existing is to serve his master's vision, because if his master's vision is not worth serving, then his life has no purpose. Every other Anakin Skywalker that could have been died on Mustafar, at Anakin Skywalker's hand. Darth Vader knows that the Empire is right, that Palpatine's ascendancy is the only path forward for the galaxy, because if it is not there is no reason for Darth Vader to continue living.

He is the Emperor's short-tempered, invincible errand boy, and there is nothing he relishes more than the moments when he gets to unleash the bottomless wellspring of hatred in his heart and crush some stupid asshole who is opposing him.

Palpatine's usually good about sending him somewhere where he can do that.
>>
>>46638590
Lots of sources show Vader having immense comradery with stormies but a huge hate boner for generals, leaders, and political figures who have no idea what theyre talking about and mostly just got their rank from social and political positioning
>>
>>46638658
To expand on what I mean here, I always figured that he had all this inner pain and rage, and he does well enough with *his boys*, but take him outside of that situation or out of a situation where he's in control, and his internal struggle and the maelstrom of torment that is him has an easier chance of coming out; especially when the stupidity of those that he feels should know better gets in the way of his goals.
>>
>>46638660
As a result of that, the second Luke enters the picture his motivation changes entirely to "we will rule the galaxy as father and son, and anyone who tries to fuck that up is going to die."
>>
>>46638642

It's very obvious "Darth Vader" was just supposed to be the guy's name (later his assumed name when they decided Vader and Anakin should be the same person).

That's why everyone calls him "Lord Vader". I really wish George hadn't turned "Darth" into a title because every single Sith Lord who isn't Vader has the cringiest fucking name.
>>
>>46638652
Not this anon but in short writing vader is like trying to characterize a hurricane.

You can try, but it's hard to capture the sheer spectacle and terrifying visage with words, let alone describe its "personality" beyond that moment
>>

My guess? He was bro tier with the clones and has a hate boner for civvie officers ever since.

>>
>>46638702
Vader gets along well with grunts. They are expendable tools. He is a slightly less expendable tool.

Vader gets along absolutely horribly with any kind of bigger picture person. His whole life, the bigger picture has been something that Padme, Obi-Wan, or Palpatine handled for him. He does not get the bigger picture, never has, and never will, and is eternally frustrated by the existence of people who have an agenda other than his own.

This is part of why if Vader turned Luke, the Empire would probably collapse a shit-ton faster into a million feuding warlords. You do not let Ani anywhere near any political negotiations. He makes his son in Jabba's Palace look like a goddamn savant.

That's because Luke is the last bit of Padme in the galaxy (that he knows of).

In full pottery, he says to padme that they can rule in episode 3, his fear of losing padme turns him evil, then he tells Luke they can rule, then his fear of losing like (and thus the last but of padme) causes him to throw the emperor into the pit-o-doom
>>

That seems pretty true to the character. If a Stormtrooper had a gun to Luke's head and was about to execute him, Vader would probably kill the poor sod in a heartbeat.

>>46638787
I cannot imagine someone even bothering to ask him that. Even as a formality.

The hound can be run either with Bossk and Mangler/Calculation, or kept cheap. If you plan on making it fat-ish, get a Punishing One and throw fucking Gonk on the thing. The Hound's Tooth simply can't take a hit like the Falcon or even Decimator can (with Ysaard Ygritte Ygrrrgloyf).

My two favorite ways of running it is Morello with the HLC, broadsiding shit, with a K4, Outlaw, and possibly Gonk. And with Latts, kept cheap, with a Weapons Engineer and little else (maybe a Gonk and Experimental Interface). The important thing to note is EI doesn't let you double-Gonk, but it does let you take an action and them regen a shield you've stacked up on it.

actually that would be a great Edge of the Empire campaign come to write it down.

"Emperor Palpatine is dead. Long Live Emperor Skywalker."

Most of the fleet at Yavin IV still fled. The Emperor's advisors on Coruscant attempted to claim power. The Emperor's Hand, Luke Skywalker, cut them down in the middle of an empire-wide broadcast, and proclaimed his father, Darth Vader, Emperor.

It is estimated that over the next two months, over a trillion sentients died.

The Rebel Alliance and the Skywalker Empire are the two most powerful dominions still standing now that the battle lines have mostly shaken out, but both are a pale shadow of their former strength. And between them stand the Warlord Territories, whose regional governors refuse to bend the knee to the new emperor.

honestly you can take that and run with it in a ton of fun directions. most of which involve a boss fight against Luke Skywalker.

Looking to get back into reading some Star Wars novels since newcanon is a thing. Any particularly good ones I should start with?
>>
>>46639078
Nucanon novels?

Only Tarkin is considered "good." Everything else is awful.
>>
>>46639114
A New Dawn is widely considered to be as entertaining or better than Tarkin.
>>
>>46639137
I actually just heard of that one. Interesting.
>>
>>46639114
Darn.

Well how about the Han Solo adventures or Lando's? I know its Legends but I've heard good thing.

Also while I'm at it is there any other Legends stuff that's required reading for Star Wars fans?

>Legends stuff that's required reading for Star Wars fans
Thrawn
X-Wing
Starfighters of Adumar
Hand of Thrawn
The Farlander Papers
The Stele Chronicles
Mercy Kill
The Han Solo and Lando Calrissian books
Scoundrels
The good bits of Tales of the Jedi
The KOTOR comic
WEG's splat books
Tag & Bink
If you want closure for the original Wraith Squadron story arc, Courtship of Princess Leia

And as always, /swg/ tradition requires me to recommend Jedi Prince.
>>
>>46639256
Isn't Starfighters of Adumar and The Farlander Papers part of the X-Wing Series?

Yeah. Guess I just wanted to emphasize Starfighters of Adumar because it's that fucking fun to read. It's important to note, however, that the Farlander Papers (and the flight sim) have only a minor story connection to the X-Wing novels and comics.

I would throw in Legacy (comic not Legacy of the Force) but that's pretty Skub around these parts. Knight Errant is pretty cool too and stars one of /swg/'s top waifus. But I'm more of a movies and vidya guy so other than Heir to the Empire, KOTOR comic and TOTJ I'm pretty lacking on this list

Legacy had lots of good bits but I'd hesitate to make it required reading, since understanding some of the early stuff requires having to slog through the Vong era. It's also not strongly connected to the main time period, so it doesn't really have much effect on Legends' main story. The biggest deal breaker for me, though, is the starfighter designs.
>>
>>46639399
Legacy is entertaining, at times. But as far as "recommended" goes it's not on the list.
>>
>>46639472
I like some of the stuff from Legacy, but I never really cared to follow the plot (or characters).
>>
>>46639472

Legacy is very much a product of its times (2007) and it features an edgelord protagonist who is essentially a combination of Luke and Anakin Skywalker turned into a burnout junkie. But oh, he's got a super speshul snowflake healing power that nobody else in the galaxy can use or understand.

So yeah, as >>46639399 said, it's pretty Skub. I'd also recommend Outbound Flight. It's set in the PT era but it features Thrawn in his first appearance in the legends timeline and shows how batshit the original Jorus C'boath really was.
>>
>>46637539
>edgy viewpoint that the Jedi were aloof and heartless

Could someone elaborate on this? I've never read the books.
>>
>>46639685
Outbound Flight is pretty interesting but I am very leery of anything that involves the Yuuzhan Vong as a plot point, even indirectly.

Veitch gave Luke a competent trainer in Palpatine

giving him Darth "I Am Definitely Someone You Can Trust To Train An Apprentice, Look At My Track Record Of Unbroken Successes" Vader as the universe's worst helicopter parent safely brings him down to tolerable bossfight NPC levels
