There are a trillion elf subraces and interpretations, but dwarves are almost always gruff mountain miners with beards, ale, and Scottish accents. Even Dragon Age, which did its best to subvert fantasy cliches, left dwarves as normal except for sometimes shaving. Why are dwarves always so dwarfy?

Done in one.
That's all, folks.
Look into dwarven folklore for different sorts of dwarves.
The main problem for me is that gnomes and even halflings take up much of that sort of space.

Eh I've seen a few interesting Dwarven Subraces.
Check the Jungle Dwarves from FR for example.
I've also seen them as Arctic Dwarves who make shit out of Ice.

>He thinks dwarves are unfriendly drunkards
>Not hospitable crafters who can be good friends, but also the toughest of enemies.

Have Hill Dwarves, plucky architects or merchants with a taste for wine. Have them involved alot in Halfling towns where their burrows are dug out by the Hill Dwarves thanks to their genetic disposition for manual labour

Dwarves of Shannara are gardeners and kinda claustrophobic

>scottish accents
that kinda a pet peeve me since they're closer to germanic than anything
and if you want variations of dwarves, there's always short angry mesopotamians with silly hats
