Were Rick and Bryan correct about this?

Probably. The current stuff is a shitshow. AoS blows in every way possible, and 40k is being driven into the shitter.
>>
>>46577589

I've was looking at getting back into 40k...

At least my armies are Blood Angels and Eldar. Games Workshop has been doing a terrible job with the games portion. I'm assuming BA aren't shit since they're SM. The real craving I have is a decently balanced mini game.

>Ain't perfect at the high-end of tournament play, but casual play is close to perfectly balanced.

See, all that means is that in your local meta, you don't have anyone playing competitive armies. That's good for you, but doesn't make the rules well-balanced.
>>
>>46578116

You're mistaken. I live in Minneapolis, m8.
15 minute drive to FFG headquarters.
Casual X-wing nights - two or thee nights a week at just that store - bring in 20-40 people for pickup games or a chill tournament. Many of them are practicing for major tournaments with top-meta lists, and many of them are just flying whatever it is they want to fly.

So again.
Balance isn't perfect, but it is pretty fucking good. A good player with a casual list will utterly crush a bad player with a top-tier list.
>>
>>46578360
I don't think X-Wing meta factors much into playing 40k

Wow. That is objectively wrong in so many ways. How you could even think that is baffling. Either you dont play this game, ever, at all. Or youre a myopic Tau/Eldar/Necron/WarConvo/Demi-Company/Skyhammer retard. Whatever the case, it's possible that you're mildly retarded.

Everything remotely generic has been renamed to better fit copyright, fantasy has been replaced by an entirely new game without any real rules and a setting best described as if someone who made anime looked at 3 warhammer miniatures a gundum and an episode of thunder cats for inspiration, and basically everything is terrible.
>>
>>46584190
that sounds awful. Why would they change it up?
>>
>>46583918
You'll get plenty of negative and entirely accurate answers, but in the interests of balance, they did release some great mechanicus models and a nice imperial knight, a 30k set (personally I'm not a mehreen fan, but plenty of people are) and they're now doing starter boxes which are surprisingly good value compared to most of their other stuff.
>>
>>46584190
also, whats up with these ridiculous prices?
>>
>>46584309

Nobody could afford starting up a fantasy army anymore and they stopped getting new players. Instead of working out a way to introduce lower price points they created a new game where you throw whatever models you own onto a table, run them headfirst into eachother at the middle of the board and roll dice untill one side is eliminated
>>

Have you heard the good news about our Lord and savior Mantic?
>>
>>46587901
Not him, but I've only seen mentions of it, so I'd be happy if you would enlighten me.
>>
>>46587929
Kings of War is EXTREMELY balanced. Every single faction is playable with numerous builds that work instead of everyone copying and pasting overpowered lists. Their sci-fi stuff is still in the works so it has some balance issues, but they're working on it and by the time it's out of beta odds are it will all be fixed. They listen to what the community wants and actively try to improve. KoW has equivalent factions for you to play your Warhammer Fantasy armies, and they encourage you using the models you already have instead of being anal about only using theirs. And if you do want their models, the bundles are cheap. The Undead Army is $85 and has 90 models.
>>
>>46588123
And how many models does one need?
>>
>>46588123
KoW is good alternative for people who already have WHF army and don't want to just throw it in the trash because GW axed the game.
But actual KoW models look like unwashed protestant ass for the most part.
>>
>>46588212
It depends on which ones you are looking at, but some of them are really nice. Their zombies easily look better than their equivalent, and none of their hard plastics are really bad. Their restic models however are simply lame. There is no good reason anyone should use that junk in this day and age. Thankfully all of their new models avoid it, and their newer hard plastics are entirely posable and come with tones of extra bits in contrast to the older hard plastics which are about a step away from being snap fit.
>>
>>46588212
>But actual KoW models look like unwashed protestant ass for the most part.

One of the first passages in the KoW rulebook encourages you to use any model you want, and not feel like you need to buy Mantic models.
>>
>>46588212
Mantic models are what they are, you are not required to buy them to play KoW if you don't like them. The fact that Mantic still makes money on both the rules and the minis probably means that some people like it.
>>
>>46588166
Depends one what faction you play. Keep in mind that the game goes off of unit footprint instead of number of models, and you're good as long as you have just over half the number it says you need. So if the book says a regiment has 20 models you can play it with 11.
>>
>>46588166
Depends.

A 1500 points army can be anything between 20 and 200 models and not be ass.

Kirby pulled his buyout in 1991, which meant that he needed to start making a lot of money to pay back his creditors. It took a long while for the studio to be completely subsumed by the sales people, though. First there were problems with Specialist games, where they overprinted and had a few other back-end problems that caused GW to veer away from trying to capture niche markets.

I think LotR was the nail in the coffin, though. It was a beautifully designed skirmish system, playable with only a box of models per side, and the designers basically used it as a testing ground for ideas that couldn't be done in Warhammer at that moment, with the hope that they would get to repackage the SBG for Warhammer or another sustainable line after the LotR craze ended. But the sales people didn't realise that the Jackson movie bubble would burst, and they freaked out when they suddenly had all these LotR minis that weren't selling. Then they tried War of the Ring, but that didn't catch on because it would mean consumers spending hundreds more on a game that was already losing momentum. It perfectly encapsulates the Apocalypse/Warhammer 8th problem, where when they're not sure of their next step they try to make something huge with lots of minis, but people don't want to spend that much when the old editions still work and the game suffers.
>>
>>46583341
>6th edition reign
