This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Chunin named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. You have just recently graduated to a Chunin after winning the final tournament. You've been regularly completing missions as a Chunin, and making progress in training. You have a busy week before your next mission.

>>
After you leave Kichiro's place, you take a look at the sky. It seems to be fairly early in the afternoon. The last half week has been fairly full of training, and today you're simply looking to take a break and relax shortly. Your recent defeat at the hands of Shozuku have weighed somewhat heavily on your mind, although by keeping busy with your career you avoid thinking about the subject.

As you walk down the road, you think about who to go see next. Inside, you note that it could be good to become friends with people who might teach you something as well. Would it be worth investigating where Ai lives, also?

There's also the vision that you recently had, thanks to the ritual Ino assisted you in. No matter how you look at it, something heavy is on the horizon.

Oh well. Forget all that for now. You're out to relax.

Who do you want to visit?

You decide that now is a good a time as any time try and see what Mari is up to. She's certainly someone you could benefit from training with, especially now that you have a real weapon. The village is rather busy, so you stick to the sides of the roads to avoid the traffic of people. After a while you make it to the weapon shop, and find Tenten manning the counter. She's dealing with several customers as you enter, but she gives you a small wave. Off to the side, Mari is wearing her work clothes with her hair tied back in a pony tail. She seems to be grumpily mopping up a spilled soft drink that someone brought in, although you clearly noticed a "no food or drink" sign outside the building.

Stepping forward, you approach and say hello. She looks up, her grumpy face going to a neutral state. "Oh, it's you. Are you here to buy something? My mom can take care of you in a second."

You look around, and notice that the store is busier than you usually remember. This must be their peak hours. It's the middle of the day, after all. "I was going to ask if you wanted to spar a little bit, but I can see that you're busy with work. Maybe some other time."

She leans on the mop. "Did you have anything specific in mind, or do you just wanna get your butt kicked?"

You nod. "I was hoping you could teach me to be better with my tanto. It's simple enough to swing a little blade like that, but seeing as your mom is making a special sheath for me I think I should get some actual skill with it."

Mari nods, shutting her eyes briefly. She seems tired. "Well, that's a good idea to have. I could show you how to use a tanto sometime, sure." She stands up straight, leaning the mop against the counter and raising her arms above her head and stretching." I'm usually free later in the afternoon, unless I have a mission. Just stop by, and I'll be here. Except tomorrow though! Mission, heh."

You can tell that you're not the only one busy with training. Of course someone like Mari wouldn't slack off, even in her downtime.

Tenten calls out. "Mari, could you come here? I need you to grab some things out of the back real quick."

She nods. "'Kay, mom!" She whips her head back to you, looking on with large, pale eyes. "I guess you're the customer who's getting the jet sheath, then? Mom should be able to tell you more about it, if you wait a little!"

She runs off.

So Mari time is on the schedule later this week. Good good
>>
It's worth it to wait and talk to Tenten. It doesn't take very long for the customers in front of you to disperse, before you get you turn. As you approach, she leans on the counter and smiles. "My favorite customer! What can I do for you, today?" You chuckle, and rub the back of your head. "Well, I was actually here to see Mari, but she's busy right now. How's the sheath coming?"

Tenten nods. "It's coming along smoothly. Your funds mostly went towards acquiring materials, although we have a good bit of budget from the village government. This weapon we're making could be the basis of the future of the Leaf's military!"

You blink. "Really? What makes you say that?"

Tenten takes out a diagram of the machine, and lays it on the glass counter. "The sheath is designed to attack with extreme speed and power, more than what a shinobi that isn't highly trained in Taijutsu could put out. It uses electromagnetism to propel to blade with great force. It could cover the physical weakness of many of our troops. This is the type of weapon that would have been really useful, during the war."

You nod, understanding. "I'm honored to be the first to try it out then."

Tenten smiles. "Well, you get the privilege for putting up the cash! Now, was there anything you needed?"

(As far as I can tell there's nothing Tenten can sell you that you're not currently filled up on, unless you wanted to buy a puppet frame or extra explosive tags.)

>A. Buy extra explosive tags. (Spend small, medium, or large amount of money. Nets you one tag, two tags, and three tags respectively. it's being taken care of from this point on.

You'll still need to buy it up front when it becomes available. That's really when you'll pay for the development, the initial fund was to kickstart the project.

The payment is more for tenten's family, as it's not going to be as excessive as the ridiculous technological developments that went on prior. It's going to be expensive but within your price range, which is a monumental bargain for a prototype military weapon like this.

That you don't even have permission to use. Tenten's just sort of doing what she wants, not that Naruto would object to this particularly.

>>
>>46574405
Yeah but we might be able to get something basic like blades that we can shoot at people and bend around in the air

I definitely wont be suggesting we get an actual puppet but we might be able to get something basic

Maybe even an armour piece with a bomb attached or poison spray that can be activated instantly with a chakra wire
How fucking sneaky would that be, in taijutsu fight as we punch a flick our finger and suddenly poison senbon spew out of our side
>>
>>46574462
Sure, likely a waste of time though.

>>46574512
We'd still need to be a pretty good puppeteer for that and those come with weaknesses depending on build. Also expensive as fuck.
>>
Looking over, you can see a couple of the frames for puppets in glass casing. They're faceless and wooden, and quite barren of equipment. Of course, they're just the frames. All the equipment has to be purchased separately, but the bodies are all you really need for training. You decide that it's at least worth asking what they're all about. Memories of the kind of power that Kagami wielded are a perfect example. Makoto also seemed to display some sort of skill with puppetry, using his sword.

"How much are the puppet frames?"

Tenten looks over. "These? Well, it depends on which one you want. I assume you have no experience with them, since I'm pretty much the only person in town that sells them. I have three humanoid ones on stock, which are what you want if you're starting out. You can custom order animal based ones, buuut I would wait until you're more advanced for those. Their control schemes are always different."

"You sure seem to know a lot about puppetry." you state.

She nods. "Well, it's a part of my business. I don't use them myself, but they're certainly an impressive shinobi tool. There's probably some workshop in the Sand village which puts me to shame though, heheh!"
>>
>>46574616

She walks over to the cases and points to a short, stocky puppet. It's limbs are thicker than the other two humanoid ones, and it's chest is somewhat barrel shaped. "This frame is sturdy, although a bit slower for it. It has plenty of interior space. Really, it's up to what you do with all that interior space that determines what it's capable of. Enough space to shield a fuel tank for a flamethrower, or perhaps some sort of generator for an electrical edge to it's attacks. Whatever your money and skill can afford."

She moves over to a taller, much more humanoid puppet. This one is about the same size as you, in fact. "This is what I suggest for beginners. It's average in size and weight, and perfect for substitution jutsu. Puppeteers I've seen make the most out of this type by outfitting it with various poison attacks, or giving it a series of surprise melee installments."

The third and final puppet is much taller than the other two, although it seems to be rather thin. She opens up the glass, and shows you the back. "This puppet is intended to specialize in melee, with it's light weight and long reach. Blades are common."

You thank her for tell you about them, but say that you'd prefer to save your money for other things right now.

The only thing you think you made need from Tenten in the near future on your mind, is explosives. She sets you up with a couple of the tags for a sum of cash and you are out the door, after saying goodbye. It's a bit later in the afternoon now, just about the evening. You could explore a little more, although people are probably eating dinner with their families just about now. You could go get something to eat yourself, or head home and see if your bro is making dinner.

You head home, and find your bro in the middle of cooking burgers! It seems he was anticipating you coming home tonight, somehow. He grins. "Hey, little brother. I went and got a bunch of stuff on sale at the supermarket, yeah? I haven't had burgers in such a long time, and thinking about it made me hungry. I hope you didn't eat before you came home."

You smile, and shake your head. "Nope, I'm starving. It smells great!"

He grins as well, and sets down a plate. "Perfect. I've noticed that you've had this week off, it seems. You know, if you want your brother to train you some time I could probably find some space. I may have to wake you up especially early, though!"

"That sounds great. Do you think you may be able to teach me more water jutsu? I've made great use of the ones that I know so far. I think I'm really beginning to improve at Ninjutsu."

He nods. "I agree. I'll show you some of my better moves, when we meet!"

He lays some burgers on the table, and you start to assemble yours as you like it. The condiments available are a couple pieces of fried bacon, lettuce, tomato, hot sauce, pickles, mustard, a few types of cheeses and almost everything else you could think of. It's quite a treat, and the two of you are enjoying the food so much you hardly talk for a few minutes. At the end, you both burp, and laugh loudly.

"I'm also interested in anything special that you might want to show me. You must have some sort of secret move, right?"

He looks over at you, a glint in his eyes. "Secret move...Hmmm, I guess I do have something like that. Fine, I'll show it to you soon."

After dinner, you relax at your house for the night, staying up a bit later than you usually would reading comics or watching movies. You also grab a fudgesicle from the freezer.

After a long sleep, it's Thursday. Today you plan to study. After a short while, you head to the Academy and find it empty as expected this early in the morning.

There are several options in terms of training Genjutsu for your current skill level. You'll have to learn a couple of the more basic techniques before moving onto more powerful ones, however. No matter how good your talent, you'll need a foundation of fundamentals to work with. You have a strong understanding of how to manipulate the senses of hearing and sight, and to some extent you can halt the body. For now, you decide to focus on Genjutsu that affect the body as the next part of your training.

>A. Pain Destruction Jutsu. A ranged, direct mental attack that's designed to activate pain receptors in the target's brain. The strength of the Genjutsu is dependent on the user's skill, as pain normally releases one from a Genjutsu. It causes no damage, but if the target is already suffering from another soruce of pain, or begins to suffer from another source of pain, the illusion will vanish. Therefore this technique has no effect on wounded targets.

>B. Body Numbing Strike Jutsu. A blend of Taijutsu and Genjutsu, if you can strike the target with your palm or fist after using it, this will send an illusory wave of relaxation, and physical comfort throughout their body. This could momentarily disarm an opponent, relax a wounded ally, or keep your own mind off of pain.

>C. Paralysis jutsu. A Genjutsu that allows you to manipulate the opponent's nervous system and freeze them in place. You can only target multiple opponent at a time with it and you're capable of moving while it is in use. The larger the opponent's chakra pool, the more difficult it is to maintain the jutsu.

>>
>>46576534
>>
>>46576534

Anyway, I don't care which one we learn because we need to learn them all. Seriously, I'm already seeing ways to combine these three.

Also, don't we also have to learn false scent jutsu or something?

The Paralysis Jutsu seems like the natural advancement, when you consider your prior techniques. Having something like this that you can whip out on command could be extremely useful, especially in a situation where you have an ally on your side. It seems to come with quite a few stipulations, but being able to completely disable someone's movements is quite a powerful jutsu. You start by studying deeper into the methods of controlling the nervous system through chakra. With using the bells, it's more a side-effect of the particular delivery method, getting to the brain straight through the ears. Here, you'll simply be hitting the skull with a controlled pulse. From there, you maintain it through feeding this pulse.

The stronger your opponent, the more chakra you'll need to contain them. Of course, physical strength has little to do with this. If they don't have the chakra to resist you, they won't be able to at all. The moral implications of a technique like this really hit you. Anyone who isn't a shinobi is more or less completely helpless, now.

This type of jutsu seems to be more complicated than the others. Learning to directly affect the nervous system is a large part of Genjutsu as a whole. It's through these techniques that you bring a touch of reality to the illusions.

You spend up until about noon reading, until you go and get some lunch at Ichiraku's. It takes a little while to get your food, but after a filling meal you keep up your session. You've grown quite accustomed to being able to focus on a particular subject on your own for an entire day.

Well into the afternoon, you're about ready to head home and rest. You've learned all you feel you can on the theory of the Jutsu, now tomorrow you'll have to apply it with your partner. Whoever that happens to be. Since you'll be training hard, you go home and get some dinner and sleep.

The next day, you lightly exercise after going through your morning ritual. You're just about to head out the door. There are a couple people who said they'd train with you.

There's a ton of exposition that answers a lot of these questions, but do you really want it? I figure most people would hate gigantic exposition dumps and this series is absolutely bonkers with them sadly, I really try to cut it down when I can.

If I didn't do it in the form of pastebins it'd take up time in the quest, and the main story is already moving at such a crawl because of how much side content there is to explore in terms of the missions being the main way of interacting with foreign characters

then I have social time for interacting with the myriad characters in the leaf.

Questions will get answered anon, don't worry.

I can explain more side content in pastebin. Hopefully that'll clear more stuff up too eventually.

Once you've gotten across town, you find Kichiro's house in the center of many other tall buildings. This side of town has always had a bad history, but you're reminded of the large group of friends that Kichiro seemed to have present at all times. You knock on the door, and moments later you're greeted by the tiny face of his sister peeking through the door.

"Kichiro said he'd train with me, is he here?"

She nods slowly, and runs off. Seconds later, Kichiro jumps through the door wearing gray sweatpants and a gray sweatshirt. "Let's go!" he yells, taking off in a jog and forcing you to turn heel and follow him. "H-hey! Are we going to the training field?"

Kichiro shakes his head. "Nope! Too many schmucks, we're going to the forest to train. Speaking of which, we should try to think if there are any jutsu that we could teach each other. Is there anything that you wanted to learn from me? I have fire jutsu and taijutsu, as you know."

We could either focus on a specific area of your physical abilities, your skill, or learning a new Jutsu. Obviously I'd be the best for strength training, but by no means have I been slacking in any other area. Take your pick, I'll ask you about what you can teach me later on. Considering that it's your friend's specialty, you ask him to help improve your physical strength. Happily he agrees, and soon enough the two of you have jogged deep into the forests outside the village. The trees here are a dozen feet or more thick, and impossibly tall. Stepping out in these forests always makes you feel tiny.

Kichiro skids to a stop, and turns around. "Okay, to start, we're going to do what Hanto called a super squat."

You blink. "Yeah? How's it different?"

He holds up a finger. "You'll see, let me loosen up for a second. You should too."

The both of you go through a series of stretches, to be sure that you don't injure yourselves during training. Kichiro steps near the base of one of the gigantic trees. "The reason we came out here is for this puppy." he slaps his palm against it. "Just try to do as I do. Don't really worry about matching me right away. I've..done this quite a bit, heheheh."

Kichiro kneels down, placing his hand against the forest floor for balance for a few seconds. He looks straight up, and takes a deep breath, and begins to bounce on his heels while kneeling.

After a few seconds of this, he yells. "One!"

There's an explosion of dust and twigs in front of you as he rockets into the sky, propelled by nothing but his physical strength. He must clear at least two stories before reaching the apex, and reaching with his hands to cling tree with chakra.

Slowly, he slides back down. "Alright, now you try! Just give it everything you got."

You kneel down, and bounce on your heels as you try to enter a mental rhythm. On the upswing, you fully extend your legs as powerfully as you can. You're shot up into the air, only about ten feet, but enough to shock you.

In fact, you almost lose control. Your body flips backwards, but as your foot hits the tree you cling to it for dear life.
>>
>>46594202
Sliding back down, Kichiro takes his turn. The two of you repeat this process, carefully watching if you'd need to catch one another. A Switching to various other exercises, Kichiro seems to be targeting the parts of your body which exert the most force. This was probably essentially the same training he received from Hanto.

It's noon. You're physically exhausted, a sweaty mess. You'll be sure all over tomorrow for sure, but you will benefit greatly from it. Not only that, but now you know some advanced exercises to keep up on it.

"Thanks for that" you say between breaths. "This was one of my more prominent weaknesses, heh."

Kichiro nods. "No problem. Hey, you still got the energy to return the favor, right? I was wondering if you could teach me how to break out of Genjutsu."

You describe the usage of the Kai technique to Kichiro, and rest as he starts to practice it on his own. Of course, for now he's simply manipulating his own chakra network. After about twenty minutes you stand up, and tell him that you're going to use your Paralysis Jutsu to try and restrain him.

Kichiro raises an eyebrow. "You mean the bells?"

You shake your head. "No, this is a new technique that I've been meaning to practice. It's just called the Paralysis Techinique. I need to see how it feels, and you need to practice breaking Genjutsu. Perfect."

He grins. "Then try it out!"

You go through a few handsigns, and hold the final one while looking at Kichiro with a glare. You launch the chakra, and it connects cleanly. There's an invisible connection between you and Kichiro, your chakra directly feeding into his brain and nervous system. It spreads throughout his body and freezes him in his current position, and you can see your friend grit his teeth as he tries to resist you physically at first. There's pretty much no effect, and though your chakra is being slowly drained he's kept in place. That is, until he begins to resist your Genjutsu by manipulating his own chakra network. Once he pushes against you, it becomes a battle of force as opposed to one of control. You have to increase the amount of chakra you're feeding into the technique to keep him from breaking it, and this amount is increasing exponentially. It's clear that Kichiro's larger chakra pool will let him break out of the technique, but not before sapping you of your strength.

It seems that for people who are roughly your level or higher, this jutsu will only have a momentary effect before becoming to inefficient to maintain. But when it comes to targets weaker than you, you can hold them nearly indefinitely. As long as you have chakra left.
>>
>>46594676

You and your friend go through the motions of casting the jutsu, and him breaking it as his bindings are loosened. It's good practice for him to break a jutsu, as it weakens over time.

A couple hours of this, and it's now later in the afternoon. The two of you jog back to town to cool down, and you go your separate ways at the village gate. You feel as if you have essentially mastered the Paralysis Jutsu.

(++ to strength, raising it to 2.5. Mastered Paralysis Jutsu.)

You're physically and mentally drained. You'll have to stop training today if you want to be able to move tomorrow. You've got time to go visit someone or get something to eat, though.
