My 4000ish points of assembled but unpainted HH Night Lords sitting on the shelf, about 3 months left til they get started. Then about 4 months to paint them. I'll be happy if I can play 2500 point games with them this fall.

Night Lords aren't so much atheists (that would be more the Alpha Legion's hat) as they are anti-theist. That being said, there are several possible answers:
A) The artists are lazy/don't do their homework
2) As the old, virulently anti-Chaos guard gradually dies off, new pro-Chaos recruits join the fold and the Legion is moving gradually to a Chaos-tolerant/positive stance
D) GW is inconsistent as fuck, which is nothing new

No. Wings actually used to be a common mutation for chaos space marines back in the third addition. You chaos lord could have wings which counted and functioned like a jump pack.

They aren't atheist, they don't believe the chaos gods don't actually exist. They just refuse to grovel before them, and instead just use them as a resource like the Black Legion. Although they do have a lot of mutated members.

On of the parts I like alot about the night lords is that most of them don't have the self awareness to realize they're just as fucked, if not more than, both their loyalists foes and their more chaotically devoted brethren. In their current state they exemplify they confused, selfish, petty and violent humans they so despise. Shit' perfect.
