Turning from the picturesque scene in the mirror in disgust, you change the topic to that of the massive forest that surrounds the remnants of your castle.
"So, the forest, what's the deal with it?"
Your scarecrow caretaker, Strix, scratches at his matted straw beard in thought, or at least a pretty good simulation of thought. For a second you wonder if he was always a scarecrow or if there's someone's brain under his wide-brimmed hat. Wait, no, focus, he's talking.
"The forest, or as I call it, The Wyld, was once our Lord's Garden, from which he grew his Mandrake servants." The old construct gestures with his cane to your listless group of plant beings, tall and weedy and thoughtless. "Grown from his magic, they serve, as I have said. But after the War and our banishment, the magic grew and changed, unattended, and overtook the surrounding land. Perhaps it was a defensive measure, accidentally or intentionally triggered, I could not say. All that is know is that, after it grew, the Wyld took on a strangeness. Monstrous beasts stalk its foggy pathways and it seems to have no end. Still, this comes as much as a boon as a curse. The monsters are powerful and if you were to dominate and control them, they would be a powerful tool. Or become one themselves, at least, if brought to the Harvest Room, where there physical abilities could be bound to you, my Princess."
Jeeze, a lot to take in. So your magic forest hold monsters that you could train or just kill and take their parts... Looking down and flexing a clawed hand, you think to yourself that maybe you could be better. Maybe that's how you could fill the aching emptiness in your chest...
Returning your attention to your caretaker, you speak up.
"So, can we fix it?"

Again then hunched scarecrow hums thoughtfully, sound that still doesn't seem quite right to you, but what do you know? You're, like, only a few hours old.
"As it is now, fighting back the Wyld would be dangerous... and most likely futile. The woods grow back quickly and the beasts within will fiercely defend it. o hold the creatures and the malignant magics at bay would require very difficult, powerful spellwork... As it stands, my Princess, I do not think we have the means to do so."
Well that sucks. you didn't know much about magic, you think. Or at least, you're pretty sure you don't. This is all so confusing! You bet those stupid peasants in the "real" world don't have to deal with this stuff! Jerks...

You make your will known. You want to explore the Wyld, maybe test your powers on something other than the air. After all, you're pretty much the only one worth a damn here, so you'll probably be forced to fight anyways.
Strix looks uneasy about the whole deal, probably worried about you or whatever, but he relents.
"My Princess is wise as she is powerful, and I shall obey. Allow me to escort you to the gates."
The two of you and the Mandrakes trek through the main hall of the castle until you come to a massive double door that opens as soon as you approach, revealing a desolate courtyard surrounded by cracked and jagged walls.
And before you is a gate, which the Mandrakes proceed to haul open by manually dragging the chains above it to life it high, giving you a good view of this "Wyld"
Not far from the gate, you can see the massive trees at ground level, the back ragged and a sickly dark color, unlike the glassy sheen of your home. A heavy fog rolls out from between the trunks, looking like some grotesque, toothy maw, breathing smoke. No sound comes from it, but you still feel like something's watching you from the shadows.
Your caretaker turns to you and nods. "The beasts in the Wyld as wicked and unpredictable, and there is no saying what you will encounter in the woods beyond. Please, take the utmost care, my Princess."

Well, no time like the present. Striding out from the walls of your castle for the first time, to tread towards the Wyld. Fog curls around your hooves as you approach, climbing higher until you are striding through the murk, pushing past the towering trees and into the dark. Your vision adjusts quickly as you travel, letting your eyes pick up small shapes and details in the ancient forest. Claw marks here, a burn there, and always the sensation of being watched.

The high ground. Once you have that, you can control the battle.
Digging your hooves into the earth, you crouch low and kick off, springing high into the air, bouncing off of tree trunks, leaving the misty forest floor behind.
Still, even as you climb, you never seem to get closer to the treetops themselves, merely reaching to where the branches and thicker and longer.
Finally coming to a rest, shaded by the sickly leaves above, you look around the winding branches.
Even still, you feel those eyes on you, more keenly than before...

You dodge to the side, throwing yourself across a natural bridge of branches and vines as something goes screaming overhead. you get just enough time to leap again as a second shape blurs over you, ripping chunks out of the wood you'd been standing on just a moment before.
Throwing your back against a trunk, you raise you eyes to catch sight of what was attacking you. Finally you spy your assailant.
A humanoid shape with a bare female chest, held aloft by two massive wings and armed with sharp talons instead of feet, it glares at you with dark golden eyes. A word comes unbidden to your mind. A harpy!

You dodge the strike and , thanks to your snake tail, catch sight of and spear through the hound that had been creeping up on you.
Just as you strike down one, the others explode into a frenzy, barking and snapping at you, all while you cleanly and carefully jab and strike each away.
each attack is a close call for you and your prize, some coming too close for you to be comfortable, but you punish each one.
As you spear one through the throat, only three remain and they are looking far more wary than before. As you see them waver between attacking again or running, you hear a piercing howl and catch sight of something massive moving in the shadows. At the sound, all three wolves turn and run from you towards the mass, which steps forward to reveal a massive wolf, near three times your height.

Making sure your catch is secure, you look back up at the intimidating beast, waiting for its reply.
"The little snake... is the dominant of the home?" The wolf rumbles. The home...? guess it doesn't know what Strix named the forest.
Slowly, the wolf pads forwards, looming closer and sniffing around you before tilting its head in what must be confusion. "Scent... different. Little Snake does not smell like a snake, taking others for a pack to fight? Hm..." Oh for sin's sake, you're practically falling asleep! How slowly could this guy talk!? The beast grunts and starts turning away, pausing only to snort and say. "This one will not fight for the Little Liar Snake."

You swear there's a crack with the impact before you slump to the ground, groaning in pain for the first time in your short life. The cracking sound continues as your spear disappears into dust, your armor crumbling away as you drift in and out of consciousness. As you look up, you see the wolf devour your harpy in a single bite, glancing at you contemptuously before swallowing its meal and turning away, lumbering deeper into the Wyld. "Little Liar Snake is weak. We will never serve...."
It's right... you're weak... So much weaker than the real monsters of this forest.

Looking around at the lack of evidence left by your utter humiliation, you limp your way back to where you think the castle is. Within moments, far less time than you expected, you emerge from the treeline and head for the gate.
The distant, shrunken form of Strix jabs and gestures frantically to the mandrakes, one of whom makes its way over to you to help you along, it's blank, skull-like face devoid of pity or judgement. you almost envy that stoicism...

Taking its arm to support yourself, you wait for your caretaker's barrage of I-told-you-so's, but he too is silent, instead guiding you and your servant back inside the castle walls, the gate coming down with a sullen thud, closing the Wyld off once more.
Time passes as you lay in your barren room, curled up and nursing your frustration, shame, and anger.

You went out there, proud and ready and you came back even emptier than before...
