That was what they called you now.
Brushing past the other doctors of the morgue, you readjust the glasses on your face and try to think back to when you were able to abandon the civilian life.
Everything was free from the constraints of sociality--eating was something you could forget to do. Socializing? As if--you had work to do far too often.
But as your wings were clipped, as you fell like Icarus to the cold waters beneath you, one cold truth settled in.
Nothing lasts forever.
Rather than let that philosophy bring you down, it's done much the opposite. The people who had cast you out, had done so much wrong to you while you were the innocent party...they wouldn't rule forever. And you would sure as hell make certain of that.
In the past few weeks, you've kept your eye on a certain up-and-coming hero who could have the potential to take down your enemies. She matched you in physical prowess, and all signs indicate this 'Vanquish' can only get stronger.
Good. She'll need to be if she'll take down your former allies in the Peacekeeper's Union.

Work at the morgue is, no pun intended, a 24-hour graveyard shift. There's not much to do but stare into the blue light of your computer, documenting the causes of death, times of entry for the bodies as well as their exits to be buried or investigated by police force, or otherwise.
You recount specifically on just why the emphasis on keeping bodies had been so heavily emphasized--an incident years prior.
While you were still simply 'Knight' of the Peacekeeper's Union, a case came in as the local morgue--one even your fellow members knew you worked at--had bodies disappear nightly. Even as you worked there trying to stake out the place, there was no trace of just who had been taking them out. More disturbingly, you'd only get trace signs of where they had gone--a chipped bit of fingernail, some dead skin, hair...
Explaining to the families just where their loved ones had gone was depressing enough, but it was more disturbing lying awake at night knowing a grave robber was at large. In a city where superheroes and villains were a constant, the possibilities were endless as to what depraved acts they could be doing...

The answer was worse than you could've imagined.
Placing a cell phone you could track into a fresh corpse's pants pocket, you waited in your office, filing away paperwork like any other day. But as soon as your phone displayed the tracker moving down the halls, you immediately sprung into action, heels clacking as you walked to track the thief.
Opening a pried-open exit door, you saw the briefest glimpse of them as they went away--tall. Presumably male from the broad shoulders, the short hair. And definitely fast. Turning into your bright-white armor, you ran as fast as you could down the darkened streets, only illuminated by streetlights and the occasional flash of a car driving by. Your thief didn't seem to notice your pursuit, running down at a rate uninhibited by the idea of being pursued.
As you finally tracked them down into a cornered alleyway, you caught a glimpse of just why you had never seen where any of the bodies had gone.
The figure, pitch-black even with the leaking light of the streetlights pouring into the alley, sucked in the corpse, clothes, flesh, meat, bones and all. Sickening crunching noises resonated in the dead night air as the body was absorbed into the figure. The pooling blood simply sucked in where the thing was standing, and it shuddered as the cadaver finally disappeared.
It's eyes cracked open on the other side of it's head--facing you--and a too-familiar face began to form.
Nighthawk.
"What--Damian, what the hell do you think you're doing!? That's a person, for Christ's sakes!" you cry out. Everything plays out like a dream. You know your actions have no effect, and yet you have to try regardless.
"Necessary measures. What you saw tonight didn't happen." he said, voice dull, and he begins to breathe heavily, as if he needs to immediately suck in as much oxygen as possible. Nighthawk's form shudders, and a skull falls out of his chest, some of the inky substance of his body still clutching to the orifices.

That horrifying image--the skull of a body you had just seen come in that day--never left you.
You filed for formal resignation from the Peacekeeper's Union the day after, but you were denied. Payne tried to say that due to your 'history of incidents' you would not be allowed to choose your termination.
What she really meant was that you were going to be completely wiped from their history and records--your portrait in the HQ destroyed, your name lost to history, and censored from all news outlets.
Since that day, you've dedicated everything you could to stopping that monster Nighthawk--even if you know he is merely a part of a much more dangerous system. But, that would come later.
You snap back to life at hand, as your assisting doctor taps your shoulder.
"Dr. Sanguis? We're going to need you to pull a double-shift, do you mind? I know you said you have a second job out in the deeper parts of the city, but we're really overclocked." She turns into you, whispering, "The police are suspecting there's some mass killer on the loose."

Nighthawk is essentially meant to be The Blob (the classic horror monster, not anything else) as a sapient, albeit sociopathic being. He's a representative of what a corrupt ruling body can lead to--but he isn't the root of it.

Despite the nagging feeling in your chest, you know that it's in your best interest that no one at work starts to think less of you. Still, it disturbs you to think that another serial killer could be ravaging the city and lead to the Peacekeeper's getting involved. To see those hypocrites on your TV one more time, after all the harm they've done to this city...
It wouldn't make you very happy to be certain.
Still you nod at her and fake a smile (something very hard for you to do).
"It'd be my pleasure." You lie.
So the next nine hours of your life go by, eyes glued to the same screen and fingers clacking away information on each body as it comes in--right arms missing, with a half-circle gouged into the chest and pulled out, like a disgusting skin flap. None of the internal organs are disturbed on any of them, it just seems like this serial killer wanted to make an immediate violent name for themself.
One you wouldn't allow him to, as soon as you could get your hands on him...

You walk out into the examination room, looking onto the cold steel slabs that contain the body bags of each victim. Unzipping the first is a dark skinned woman, young adult, relatively fit looking.
Zipping further down you see the telltale signs of this killer--missing arm and the half-circle. But as you glance closer at the wound, you notice a fine powder surrounding the cut...it smells somewhat like sulfur and metal, an unpleasant combination. The slightest hint of burn marks is at the edge of the cuts, and as you look over the other bodies, you notice this as well.
The half-circle, it would seem, is less of a skinflap, and more of a gorey brand of the killer. Disgusting.
You come across the most recent of the bodies to be transferred in, an older man. While he holds all the other signs of being a victim of this killer, there's something different--a glistening in his brand. You examine closer and find a broken edge of steel--somehow the knife must have broken, possibly from being heated during the cut.
While it was little to go off of, you now know your killer has a broken weapon. The small details pile up in the end, you find.
Your shift, you notice, is nearly up. Yours eyes scan the clock, and it's roughly half an hour until midnight. While you'll have started your patrol far later than you normally do, it's a possibility that you could still find this culprit in the act tonight...

As the clock strikes time for you to leave, you immediately punch out and head into the darkness of the night, your armor seamlessly appearing on your body. The cold steel grips your flesh as tightly as it can, and your mighty blade forms within the once-empty grip of your hand. Kneeling slightly, you make a mighty leap to the rooftops and land on a three-point with your arm planted firmly in the ground.
You glance down in your non-sword hand for what you took as you walked out--the broken bit of knife. Concentrating your thought processes on the object, you try to see through the mind of the killer themself.
While this ability never made itself known to you...you simply began to know of it's existence after a time. People eerily think you're some sort of psychic, when really, it's just material-based-connections to them. Not the same thing at all, right? Handy for guessing birthday gifts people want, as well as tracking down serial killers.
You see a window, through the killer's eyes. They're peering down into the streets, casually observing the people walking by--flashes of what they want to do to them flicker.
That one.
Then that one.
I want that one first.
That one second.
You pull yourself out before the thoughts gnaw at you harder. It would be difficult to track them with such a resigned use of your powers, but it would have to do for now. You pull back into their mind, as they walk out the door to their apartment--number 322. Good, something concrete. They take another glance out the window just before the elevator and you can see a dry cleaners...there's a flower shop, and a cafe nearby...you know that cafe.
That hero you've been watching lately, Vanquish...she frequents there. It's just by her...

Leaping with more strength than you've ever put into your legs, you ascend an almost impossible height right up to the window the scumbag is looking down, gripping the windowsill tightly with your free hand. He stumbles back in surprise as you lift yourself up and smash the window, crawling your massive body through the opening.
"/You/." You spit, stepping towards him and brandishing your massive broadsword.
"I-I don't want any trouble! Please!" he pleads, stepping back further down the hall towards his apartment door. You faintly hear the rattling of metal on metal from his direction. It sounds like...
Handcuffs.
Dragging your broadsword along the ground, you let it grind against the tiles, digging and making a screeching gouge in the floor. Your open hand squeezes at the air as you slowly walk towards him--you know this man deserves to suffer for his actions.
He cowers before you, fumbling through his pockets for the keys to his apartment. His hands shake with the urgency to live as he drives the key into the lock and twists it, slamming the door behind him. You hear the futile click of the locks working.
A quick slam of your sword splinters the redwood of the door, incidentally severing the man's left arm.
Not as poetic as you had hoped, but it got the point across. A spatter of blood fell to the ground, as did the chunky remains of what was his hand, but the time for remorse was past. Your eyes scan over and see a young woman, mouth taped over, chained to the radiator of the man's apartment. Despicable.
"P-Please, this isn't what it looks like! M-Me and my girl, you know, we like to get a little freaky! I-It's roleplaying, I swear!" The man sputters, as he breathes in and out. His eyes dart from you, to the girl, to his severed hand and stump.

You gotta understand that Knightmare doesn't really have an issue with killing. While Vanquish is definitely of the ilk to knock out and arrest people, Nellie comes to the 'logical' conclusion that a dead criminal is a criminal who won't commit crime again.

As you lift your sword overhead to swing down on him, the man already stops dead, giving a small deathrattle before slumping forward. Surprised, you look down and notice a fist plunged through his stomach--red with blood, but pure white elsewhere. As the fist retracts and the killer falls over, you spot the person who just stole your kill.
Clad in an all-white costume, with a half-moon decoration adorning over the otherwise featureless face.
"Hello there." He speaks to you, walking over and starting to set the hysterical woman free, breaking the cuffs with a single punch.
"...How long have you been here?" You ask. You're above the pettiness of caring that he stole your kill. Someone who submitted to letting their emotions, rather than results, might. Not you, however.
"I arrive in a flash, and disappear even quicker! I was told by a higher power to arrive here, for if I did not, then the greatest rival of my life might die!"
You step out of the way to let the woman run out, and then return to your normal stance.
"Greatest rival...?" You say.
"I know not their name, but my own higher power told me we're destined to fight! Soon, they will have a battle, where they unlock a power beyond understanding...ah, but I talk too much." He sighs, tapping his moon-accessory with two fingers. "Thank you for doing the right thing at least in trying to apprehend this man, but I won't hesitate to do the same. For I know that if you lay a hand on 'Vanquish', whoever that may be, I will have to slay you for denying me a battle."
Your eyes narrow. This man wanted to protect her as well...but for far more selfish purposes. Your teeth grind in frustration that someone would want someone with such potential for nothing but /sparring practice/. What an over-passionate fool.
"The same goes for you, Mr...?"
"Moon!" His arms sweep around him before settling in a crescent. "Ivory Moon!"

You roll your eyes as much as you can in response.
"Regardless! It's time for me to make my exit! Farewell, spooky knight!"
...and he just dove out the window. You feel like if you knew him better, this would fall under typical behavior.
You sigh and wonder about this Vanquish's future, and what role you'll play in it. Her physical exams--so you've gleaned from peering in her mind-- are imminent, and she's quite nervous. Also, this other hero, Hurricane Vanguard was her name, has revealed her identity...
Whatever kind of person this Vanquish becomes, you know she'll be integral to either save or damn this city. You very much hope it's the former.

Makoto is very much like either The Flash or Viewtiful Joe's Mach Speed--incredibly fast punches and kicks and moving around to dodge attacks, with her finishers being a plethora of special combo attacks.
Yukari is more straight up flashy shonen, which the typical array becoming more available the more Phoenix-empowered she is. Ivory, as a rival character, mirrors her moves as well.
Knightmare is essentially just a heavy swordsman, and Nighthawk is similar to Arakune from Blazblue.
