Are there any traditional games that you could literally play anywhere?
>>
Cards, chess and draughts with dirt and rocks, you can invent a basic rpg on a desert island with as little as a knucklebone die and some wet sand to keep notes on.

With a survival knife you can carve your own gamepieces out of wood and pay whatever wherever.

Mancala, Go.

Both boards & pieces are simple enough to improvise.

Fuck you Tommy.

We just shunned that kid, like hardcore Amish-level shunning. For at least the rest of the day.

Kinda brutal for kids, now that I think about it......then again they usually got out of it by bribing us with gameboy time or Sour Patch Kids, so whatever.

I like it. Forbidden Island, on an island. It's fucking genius

Back when I actually played chess, I could play a game without any pieces, but I still needed an empty board to look at. My sense of geometry isn't the best.

Storytelling can be done anywhere and IMO the oldest traditional game. Whether it's sagas, myths, made up bullshit or all the above, sitting around a fire and telling stories is a pastime that trencends places and ages.

Finger Throws.png

Back in the days before cell phones that could roll dice for you, people had all kinds of ways to generate die rolls, from finger throws to using the second hand on a watch. I played D&D at summer camp that way.
>>
I thought playing anywhere was the point of /tg/?
>>
>>46540577
So, I take it this worked like rock-paper-scissors, right? Two people each throw a number simultaneously, match 'em on the grid for result? That's kinda neat.
>>
>>46541189
You don't even need the grid, that's just displaying how it works. Basically you have the player and the DM put a hand behind their back, put up a number of fingers, then show their hand.

You add up all the fingers, if the number is 7 or higher you subtract 6. If both people picked no fingers, the result is 6. It works really well when you're walking around.
>>
>>46542296
That's neat. How about the second hand, is that just for d10s or something? I feel like waiting would probably be involved.

>>46542374
I'm not sure I follow. You and the DM both use one hand so that the result is random and you can't cheat. I put up 3 fingers, he puts up 1, add 'em up, the result is 4. We tried with both people using both hands to make d10s, but it's less convenient and frankly fuck d10s. 1 to 6 is good enough for 99% of the games out there, it's good enough to keep you going on a hike.
>>
>>46542474
Ah, no, by "second hand" I meant the second hand on a watch, which was the other method you described.
>>
>>46542506
Ah. That one came a bit later, when we got smarter and someone had a real quality watch with a second hand. You have someone with a watch, and another person who calls when they roll, then a bit of subtraction.

For example, we used it for d20s. You divide every minute into segments, from 1-20, 21-40, and 41-60. When you call roll, the watch guy notes the second it takes place on, and converts it to the roll. So if you call it on 15 seconds into the minute, you rolled 15. If you called at 38, you rolled 18. Called it on the minute, you rolled 20. Take nerdy boys to the woods and tell them to learn about nature, and they'll do anything to avoid it.
