Would it be scarier to fight Dark Eldar or Chaos? Who commits bigger atrocities? How do you even motivate Guardsmen to not completly shit themselves? I would rather get shot by Comissar than to be captured by either of them.

But Dark Eldar weapons almost certaintly hurt a fuck ton more and being captured by the Dark Eldar is probably the scariest thing I can imagine in 40k

Then turn it up to 11 and you'll getnot even close to what the Deldar do on a daily basis just so Slaanesh doesn't eat their souls, let alone for fun.

DEldar have to inflict the most unimaginable pain and suffering to their victims to make enough of a psychic sandwich to give to Slaanesh in exchange for their souls. All the novels have them doing things like skinning and reknitting people together, using their technology to amplify every sensation of pain and anguish while they do it. Think all the disgusting horror torture movies and double that with a little crazy Eldar technology sprinkled in.

Being captured by Chaos means you're now serving on a ship that is likely possessed and full of the worst human beings alive. All the other slaves are like rats and the biggest, meanest rats are the only ones that live more than a week. Or your now a reagent for a sorcerers ritual. Or your just let loose on the ship and hunted for fun, or if you're skilled, you get to be an attendent or artificer for the traitor marines which has the lifespan of a common fly.

That's not how it works. Feeding on pain regenerates the damage Slaanesh does to their souls. It isn't a bribe or an offering to make Slaanesh look elsewhere.

In one of the 40k books I read, Ultramarines Omnibus maybe, one Haemonculus had a human noble torture-raped until he couldn't feel pain. Then he repaired his nerves, flayed him alive, and cut him into pieces, which he suspended from the ceiling and hooked up to machines to keep him alive and aware, yet still in excruciating pain.
The Spess Mehreens then walked in to see sheets of skin hanging from the ceiling wired into various machines with a semi-recognizable human face, no bones, no muscles, just skin.
And that's just ONE Haemonculus, without most of his tools and equipment, trying to lay low as to not be discovered too early. Just imagine the shit he could do without those restraints.

On an individual level, no faction comes close to the level of atrocity one can inflict to the Dark Eldar. On a galactic level, Chaos is the most terrifying blight, at least the other three apocalyptic races will just outright kill you.

Yet there exists living beings without souls that can banish demons with laser beams of No-Soul-ness.
The lore is stupid and taken so seriously that it ends up being funny.
