Anyone good at mathhammer?
I want a comparison for Thunderwolf Cavelry vs Wulfen. Against say, a unit of 3 csm.
Just based on an individual model from each unit, no upgrades. Both offensiveness and survivability.
Respecting it's 30points vs 40points.

I'm not great at that kind of stuff, but i know a mathfag will get a kick out of doing it and I respect then for that.

Returning player looking for some advice here.

I used to play back in 4th and 5th edition, mostly IG and Nids, although I've also got some CSM and Eldar stuff.
Moved over to Warmachine and from there into Infinity and historicals.

Recently, I've been bitten by a bit of a nostalgia bug and might try playing a few games of 40k every now and then again since it seems to be getting a bit of a revival in the local scene as well.
Are there any particular things I should keep in mind, any common pitfalls I should avoid?

I'll probably have a simple 750-point game against one of the local players later today.

That is quite a lot of variations (wulfen/thunderwolves with base weapons, claws, hammers, axes; then CSM with and without marks, (though we can probably ignore tzeentch,) and whether an aspiring champion is involved, and then whether said aspiring champion has a melee weapon). It's not a quick thing to work out all the permutations, as you've posed the question.

In an upgrade-less situation for both SW and CSM the Thunderwolves win both offensively and defensively thanks to rending, higher toughness and higher armor

Why is GW producing so many Chaos models for end times but not 40k. Surely they most have realised since Dark Vengance if they re-made a bunch of basic kits anywhere close to the design of the chosen models they would make a killing. I'm fine with the price increases but not for 15 year old kits.

Astra Militarum

HQ

Command Squad [177]
> 1x - Castellan Creed
> 4x - Veteran; Vox-caster, Medi-pack, Regimental Standard, Sniper Rifle

Troops

Veteran Squad [100]
> 1x - Veteran Sergeant
> 9x - Veteran; 2 flamers, vox-caster, Krak Grenades, Grenadiers doctrine

Veteran Squad [100]
> 1x - Veteran Sergeant

Veteran Squad [100]
> 1x - Veteran Sergeant
> 9x - Veteran; 2 launchers, vox-caster, Krak Grenades, Grenadiers doctrine

Heavy Support

Leman Russ Squadron [300]
> 2x - Leman Russ Vanquisher; Heavy Flamers

Wyvern Battery [130]
> 2x - Wyvern; Heavy Flamers

Hydra Flak Battery [70]

Total Points: 977

Setting this as a 1000 point goal. I want to eventually build up to a 1500, but I'm thinking of using this as casual play against people in store.

is there a printable version of the 40k rulebook, that is not 400 pages long? i wanted to print four or five for my gaming club. the reference sheet is an option, but i would like to have the whole rulebook. maybe a decent scan?
>>
>>46518255
I guess you're sticking to what bitz you get in the infantry squad box, but grenade launchers are pretty mediocre when plasma guns are an option. Is there any way you could get hold of plasma guns, either from asking around at your local club (marine players tend to have spare special weapons) or ebay etc.?

A couple of chimeras wouldn't be a bad idea either to get squads onto midfield objectives, but I do realise you're up against it points-wise. I'd drop the hydra and demote CREEEED to a company commander, as neither is essential at 1000 points.
>>
>>46518371
I've got game day coming up so I might see if I've someone has spare parts. I haven't actually built the third vet squad (waiting for some third party head to come in) and haven't gotten the second lot of Wyvern or Russ.

How needed is AA typically? I was talking with a few guys about it and they said some metas are different where some absolutely wreck because no one bothers to pack AA.

>>46518398
Round my way, you generally don't need AA at 1000 points (any fliers that are taken may not do enough damage). But like those dudes say, it varies from place to place. Maybe best to hang about at your local club to see what people tend to bring.

In any event, personally I view the hydra as a "take two or don't bother" unit, hence why I'd leave it at lower points levels. (And remember vendettas are another option.)

since you have some spare points
take the wrath of cadia pistol on creed, it's only 5 points for the pistol and it's pretty great (always wounds on a 4+ and armor saves always fail on a 4+)
im' not sure if you can take volkovs cane since it says company commanders only but then again creed is an upgraded company commander so i'm unsure
volkovs cane means orders within 6' only fail on a 12 not really necessary since creed gets an reroll regardless (which is another thing i think you can scrap your vox carriers since creed gets automatic rerolls and i don't think you can reroll them twice but i might be wrong there)

The model range is ancient heavy pewter, which is rather expensive, for relatively few minis-per-purchase. It's something like $30 for three minis that aren't exactly modern in detail.

GW hasn't made the Sisters look very cool for the last few years, because they keep dying/getting worfed in fluff to make other factions look better.

Similarly, the codex has been rather neglected. They've never been a particularly top-tier or well-rounded army, so there haven't been many flavor-of-the-month collectors in comparison, to, say, Tau or Space Wolves.

Long story short, in comparison to most of the other armies, everything about them is out-of-date, so they don't sell. But because they don't sell, they don't get support. It's a vicious cycle.

As for Traitor Sororitas, no, there aren't really many. There's one who has willingly chosen chaos, and there are a few instances of them falling. But by and large the Sisters fluff is that their love of/dedication to the Emperor is far stronger than the average Space Marines and Grey Knights chapter. That's why they get the Emperor's protection and Saints.

Mates, I can't choose between the Astra Militarum Start Collecting box, or the Tyranids Start Collecting box.

The Tyranids looks more fun to paint, but I absolutely love the vehicles of the Astra Militarum, as well as their 'Normal Guys' sort of theme going on, but hate the way their faces/heads look, as well as the Commisar looking like it'd be a pain to paint.

Can you guys list me the pros and cons between the two?

My friend is getting the Necrons Start Collecting box, if it matters?

>>
>>46519755
>but I absolutely love the vehicles of the Astra Militarum, as well as their 'Normal Guys' sort of theme going on,

It seems like you like Imperial Guard more.

You're in luck, you can field a parking lot army with IA, where you literally just plop tanks onto the field (that have infantry hiding inside).
>>
>>46519755
I'd say the astra militarum one is a much more usable force out of the box than the tyranids. Or, to put it another way, everything in the AM box will be useful as your army grows, while with the nid box you may end up leaving stuff on the shelf.

There's plenty of options for headswaps out there if you don't like the cadians.
>>
>>46519755
Go AM, but keep that tank away from the Necron Warriors.

Tyranids and guard are kind of the same, lots of guys and a few heavy units supporting them. Suppose it boils down to do you like Combat or Shooting more?

Astra Militarum allow for more character and you could always pick up some alternate WW2 heads
>>
>>46519755
Imperial Guard:

Pros
-HUMANITY FUCK YEAH
-Can ally with the other 10 imperium armies
-Horde shooty army or TANK SPAM shooty army

Cons
-If you dont like horde shooting or tank spam they're not the army for you
-if you go with an infantry list it'll take for-fucking-ever to get through turn 1 and 2 movement/shooting

Tyranids

Pros
-MOTHERFUCKING MURDERBUGS
-imo best looking army
-you're a swarm of spacebugs who just want to consume
-how fucking cool is that shit
-it's like alien up in here, sheeeiiitt
-fun playstyle in theory, hordes of cheap infantry backed up by monstrous creature murder machines
-close range/melee army, almost all of their shooting is withing 18 or 24 inches

Cons
-current codex is fucking terrible, one of the worst codexes in the game alongside SoB and Chaos Marines
-it's real bad bro
-get ready to lose

tl;dr go Imperial Guard if you want to shoot, Tyranids if you want to get up in your opponent's face

I'm guessing there's no really cheap way of buying the paints? Each collection requires around 3 sets of paints. When combined with the tools I'll need its going to cost me over double the collection price.

Even if you intend to play a tank-heavy army, here is a big tip for Astra-Militarum players:

You will find yourself searching for melta/plasmaguns soon, because the basic infantry kit does not provide any, only the command squad. So get some of these old metal minis, cadian with melta and plasmagun while they are still available.
>>
>>46520462
You don't have to use citadel paints but yes the buy in for the hobby is rather high especially if you plan on painting well.
>>
>>46519627
Dedicated Transports have to start with nothing or their indicated units aboard. First turn, Wytches will have to embark before it moves.
>>
>>46520495
A big problem with paints is, that you spend alot on paints, where you need only little.
So while the main paints are okay, as in you empty the pot with a reasonable amount of minis, many paints are needed in ridculously small quantities making one pot enough for a whole chapter

look at these. How much Iron/gold is needed here? How much red?
>>
>>46520568
If you mean Wycharlies you can buy an empty raider from the fast attack to give them a clowncar where they can begin the game inside.
>>
>>46520462
Yeah, the paints can be a fairly sizable upfront cost, but they last fucking years if you water them down as you use them

>>46518511
I used to use them years ago, circa 5e grey knight release.
Suggested them to my friend this December to get him to order some hordes.

Found out what they say they have in stock isn't really in .stock
You order something, so they then order it from their supplier, wait for it to get to them, then forward it to you.

That's isn't the case for everything, something's they keep stock of and send straight our, if it's popular or common.

Another friend confirmed his game group found the same.

Another thing was when my friend ordered his hordes warlock model it got lost in the post and he had to wait a month before they would do anything. They didn't offer to send it out again, just refunded his money without asking... So he had to go through the purchase process all over again...

I felt bad for making the recommendation

After yesterday's bitchfest, I took it upon myself to slice the OP'S rulebook.
Originally it was 800+ pages.

Defluffed, it's 412 pages of rules- still nearly twice the size it should be considering the physical copy is a little over 200 pages. I would love a straight scanned pdf of the physical rulebook for further convenience, but as that one anon pointed out, nobody is willing to put forth the effort and would rather deal with geedub's fucking awful digital versions.

I'm at work and on my smartphone, but I'm willing to upload it if anyone has a site to recommend where I don't have to make an account or anything. It's 58MB so I can't attach it to this post sadly.
>>
Would Eldar Jetbikes be more reasonable if they only had a 4+ armor save?
>>
I thought the catalog had a quick reference version of the game rules. I mean, I have it on my computer and phone, it's about 6 pages...
>>
How Viable is a 'Wraithwall'?

>>
>>46522108

>>
>>46522052

>>46522108

>>
I was wondering about the effects of chimeric geneseed. What would happen if there was a chapter made from Blood Angel and Dark Angel geneseed?
>>
>>46522052

While it would make them much easier to kill (Heavy Bolters would be able to start forcing Jink saves which is nice) it doesn't solve the issue of them having way too high killing power per model (Scatter Lasers) and being too God damn fast and thus being able to play the Objectives Game stupidly easily.

It also rubs some people the wrong way that all other Bike upgrade equivalents don't boost armour to the degree that Jetbikes do.
Like regular Marine bikers, Orks ('eavy Armour kind of counts I suppose), and even Dark Eldar just get the +1 Toughness whereas Eldar also get a nice 3+ armour save on top of it.
>>
>>46522140
Really? A friend told me Wraithlords were a liability. Guess I should be careful what I believe.
Are there any configurations I can use to tone it down for casual games like taking lots of x weapon on the 'lords (I plan to magnetise the options anyway)?
>>
>>46522207
Wraithlords and Wraithblades are both fine. They're not OP, but you won't be gimping yourself by taking toughness 6 infantry and toughness 8 MCs.

Its wraithguard and wraithknights you need to be careful with.
>>
>>46522169
good question, you probably end up like the lamenters or another set of blood angel's with the black rage
>>
>>46522207
Wraithlords?
Oh, these, they are pretty ok,
the other option to tone it down are wraithblades, who can be a bit underwhelming

I thought you meant wraithguard(either weapon) or the wraithknight. Both are strong contenders for best unit ingame
>>
>>46522187
Well, marine bikes would get ridiculous if their save went up to 2+. Scout bikers and Orks bikers both benefit though.

I think this change would be good if it applied to Dark Eldar as well and gave them 4+ bikes, just so they're less reliant on Jinking. The only Eldar bikes that could possibly justify a 3+ save are shining spears.

I do agree that the heavy weapons issue is the real issue, which is a shame because squads having all the same guns is so stylish.
>>
>>46522259
I was wondering if the Dangle genes would offset the Thirst and Rage.
>>
>>46522169
I think hybridic geneseed has been tried. Once. It did not work out well. They were called the 'ill-faited' chapters IIRC
>>
>>46522259
>>46522260
Well, it's a flavour army that I'd like mostly to paint and look at, finding the appeal in the idea of a roughly lawful/true neutral necromancer. I might try to take 50:50 Guard/Blades and a few lords so.

It might be the best of both worlds. I'll have a pretty, themed army that's only two dozen models or so off being very competitive if I ever feel the need to win anything other than the adoration of fellow painterfags, which is unlikely.
>>
>>46522380
There was the Relictors who were UM/DA but that did end badly.
>>
>>46522381
Good luck, I hope you don't get shat on when playing because you truly do not deserve that, but many people do have an aversion to that kind of army.
What do you prefer on the wraithblades, sword or axe?
>>
>>46522381
A good way to tone down wraithguard is to take Cannons instead of scythes, and footslogging them so they don't have a transport.

They'll still be incredibly dangerous, but they won't be quite as optimal and reliable.
>>
When people say they have a "flavorful" and/or "fluffy" list, what does this mean?
Does it mean they put a lot of lore into their list creation?
How does one even do that?

New player here, if you couldn't tell.
>>
>>46522473
I would've said swords, just because I'm somewhat averse to 1H axes. I don't have the 7th ed lit yet, so I don't know what the stat difference is.
>>46522527
Good to know, though I might still take a Serpant since I have them from 5th ed.

If either of you know offhand, is it still ususal to lob a warlock into a wraithguard squad?
>>
>>46522763
Typically, it just means there list has a theme or a concept its built around, rather than just taking stuff because its strong.

For example, a fluffy list for the concept of 'stealthy space marine force' wouldn't be bringing along a lot of vehicles or centurions, instead focusing on smaller models that fit with the idea of sneaking around.
>>
>>46522809
Swords are AP 3 and give you extra attacks. Axes are AP 2, but also come with a 5+ invuln save shield.

I'd suggest including at least a few with axes, just for variety. It could also make a good bodyguard unit for a Spirit seer.

Using a Wave Serpent is fine, though I'd recommend against sticking the Wraithguard in it. Their main downside is lack of speed and short range, and a transport solves both of those neatly.

I think you can still stick a warlock in a Wraith squad without issue. Would be a decent place too, since it helps the warlock survive and gives the wraiths some more support.
>>
>>46522763
To me it means that they've read over the lore, got inspired by an idea in it, such as 'Blood Angels use jumppacks. I'm going to make a Blood Angels army and take a lore-appropriate amount of Jumppacks, whether they're effective or not because I find the idea appealing'.

There are a few incarnations of this and it can involve creating their own donutsteel successor chapter. The core of the idea though is embracing the lore and incorporating it into your list building.
>>
>>46522809
stat diff is huge. You won't find anything in the rulebook, only the codex.
basically axes hit at ini 1 because unwieldy. That gubbin on the other arm is a 4++ invul shield. Don't ask me how. Axes are AP2 and +2S

swords give +1A because 2swords +1S and AP3

Keep in mind wraithblades are 1A base. Swords do look really cool, methinks and it is a travesty you cannot mix
>>
So, I am thinking of getting back into 40k, and was wondering what armies are good in the current edition?

Ideally I would like to play an army like GK which is high points with a low model count, as I don't want to spend a lot but still play with some buddies.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>46522915

Eldar/Tau/SM
GK are near bottom of the tiers.
>>
>>46522763
mono god over min maxing daemons. one army plays to the "fluffy' aspect of following 1 god while the other cherrypicks the best parts of daemons

mostly fluffy armies are more casual and beardy/cheesy armies are built for competitive play
>>
>>46522970
>Near bottom

>>
what do grey knights (or i guess their players) think about the daemon incursion? the nemesis formation is helpful but they might lose hard on objectives
>>
>>46522970

>>
>>46523263
Inquisition can be a silly army. Conversion beamers, orbital strikes, jokaero, etc
>>
>>46523143
GKs do struggle on Maelstrom. Being overall slow and limited units / hard lack of Obj Secured.

What really hurts GKs is the AP2 creep and AWFUL internal balance.

"20" units (3 being the Land Raider Variants)

But their book boils down to 2-3 options a slot with one choice being head and shoulders better. Only "balanced" slot being Fast Attack

Only thing keep GKs in mid tier is Dreadknights / Imperium Battlebuddy Shenanigans.
>>
>>46523008
They're not great. They're slightly above Blood Angels in Marines. BA are the bottom of the Marines.

Dark Eldar, Nids, Orks and BA are probably the bottom 4. That's ignoring the 'meme' armies like Inquisition and Harlequins.

Either way. Grey Knights aren't really what they're meant to be. They're expensive, but with the abundance of AP2 and S8+ by the top tier, it's difficult to get anything out of them. Paladins were GOAT, but they're expensive and can be ID'd by top tier reltively easily. However, Purifiers can be pretty good in the formations.

My current thoughts are since my friends split Dark Vengeance having the inquisition showing up, looking at SW and DA and going with SW to fight Chaos.

What would be the best way to represent this?

I was thinking vanilla marines with a librarius conclave summoning daemons

Dude is selling:
>6 Talos
>1 Cronos
>40 Wracks
>2 Haemies
>3 Venom
>1 Raider
>3 Grotesque conversions

All are assembled and at least primed.
Venoms and Raider have super shitty paint jobs and I would only be using them as a destroyed vehicle for when my vehicles wreck.

I mean, almost all of my DE were assembled by me, so it feels weird to add these to my collection.
But he wants $300, what do?
>>
>>46525353
wow that looks great how did you do it ?
>>

>>46525452
Run them as Space Wolves. Go full Mr. freeze with Helfrost.
>>
>>46525423
>does for Scout Bikers

Nnnnope.
>>
>>46525452

Not bad, what's his alignment? Sounds like someone who would go Undivided or Tzeentch.
>>
>>46525423

Scout Bikers still only have a 4+ save broski.

Orks just have the 'eavy Armour built-in to the bike upgrade.
>>
>>46525467
USD? and what is the value if bought new?
Do you want the models?
Does it come with spare parts?
Is nothing from 3rd edition?
>>
>>46525509
>>46525528
Huh, weird.

Either way, I still support a 4+ save on Eldar Jet bikes, I'd only so I can get a 4+ save on Dark Eldar ones.

I have seen my fair share of them here.

Two years ago one that has since stopped playing always wore a tail on his center back belt loop.

ideally.

I think the cut off is mid twenties

Any older then that and you are lucky to get augmented.
>>
>>46525571

Depends on the chapter. Ultramarines and Dark Angels and their successors with their super pure geneseed probably have to. But on the flip side, Space Wolves can take older recruits(Lukas the Trickster's fluff says he was a ladies' man before he got picked up to Asaheim).

Also there was Great Crusade tech that allowed old guys to become space marines(i.e. Kor Phaeron).
>>
>>46525640
That's too late for gene-seeds to affect your growth or development. You might get some benefits from the gene-seeds, but you'd be inferior in just about every way to marines made from kids.
>>
>>46525441
Most smoke launchers come hollowed out, it's only reasonable to assume that's how they all work.
>>
>>46525589

If your legion has a totem animal, it doesn't make you a furry. If you use dogs for tracking and mauling the enemy, or cavalry charges, those are legitimate tactics too. So here I was thinking the Yiff was just a joke/rage over 5th edition overpoweredness...
>>
>>46517725
Give those two some spacy looking helmets and make them Daft Sororitas.
>>
>>46525662
>Kor Phaeron

He was too old for gene-seeds. He got bionics and drugs.
>>
>>46525703
>Most smoke launchers

Only ones I've seen as such are the SM ones. The IG ones have caps on them. The old ones even had little nubs on the caps, like in the pic.
>>
>>46519710
Haha, do you even Ld7 for a seargent upgrade, bro?
>>
>>46525539
Yes USD.
Total value if purchased would be $864, so he's selling them for 35% retail.

Of course I want the models, but he's selling as a lot only.
I'm only interested in the Talos/Cronos and the Wracks.
Therefore according to the 35% retail, I'd be spending $89 of that $300 on models I don't want.

I'm kind of torn here.
>>
>>46521126
yes, yes you absolutley can. I like to call this number more than one. Grots and toys is how the game works now.

Cut a dozer blade or meltabombs?
>>
>>46525769
You can't really say "only" space marines when they're the armies with the most common source of smoke launchers, actually other than the marines and IG are there even any others?

but anyway even the chaos smoke launchers have the grenades modelled inside the barrels, it's only the older chimera kits such as basilisks that come with capped smoke launchers and they are very obviously capped, if you cut off those smoke tubes you could make a small rendition of St Basils cathedral.

>If your legion has a totem animal, it doesn't make you a furry. If you use dogs for tracking and mauling the enemy, or cavalry charges, those are legitimate tactics too.
I agree completely.
However there is a small sect of SW players that like to go into detail about how they breed Thunderwolves.
In a Dark Heresy General (may have been a 40kg) months ago there was some autist who spent a solid hour sperging out about how Thunderwolves are Spacewolves' wives. Explaining how they should "take care of them" and how breeding them which each other wolves was basically kəkəlding.
>>
>>46520657
This. They can spam meltas like crazy. Also, with the Priest's posse, they have access to one of the best close combat units in the game.

I'm actually kind of afraid that the SoB might get an update soon. They're good now. An update might make them worse.
>>
>>46525901
I've had people tell me I should just chill and accept that they are three points over.

Fuck you. That's what I have to say to that. You probably suck at coloring books, too.
>>
>>46525901
Could we see your list?
>>
>>46525921
Ain't got no dozers of melta bombs.

Either I remove three bolters and add camo netting on all three transports, or I drop a heavy stubber and do the same, or stick with what I have and jam a 40 points scout sentinel with autcannon in instead of the camo netting.
>>
>>46525825
Different anon here, could you maybe save the vehicles by stripping the shitty paintjob? With simple green or something?
Cuz those wracks could surely use some transportation... and then it'd be a really nice deal (provided you like the poses and so on - I can totally relate to your concern about not assembling them yourself)

>>46519710 man, already the dinobots are calling me to the dark side (together with that sweet warpsmith) so pls no joking about mega fiends with transport cap, cause then I'd wave my skitarii and space elves goodbye and bow to chaos once and for all
>>
>>46525925
>You can't really say "only" space marines

What kit, other than ones associated with space marines, comes with hollowed out smoke launchers? Because if they're all in SM kits, how can't I say it's only SM kits?

>grenades modelled inside the barrels

Ergo, not hollow tubes.

Look, you can always model them as spent launchers, but the IG ones clearly have caps on them, so if one drills them out, at least remove the cap from the launcher as well.
>>
>>46525825
ebay the rest ?
