Starter topic: This week's Magic Story is "Drownyard Temple," by Mel Li.

http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/drownyard-temple-2016-04-06

Eldritch Moon has been title-dropped, as an unknown, unseen Object descending on the plane. Also, Jace seems to have finally caught the madness.
>>
First for Emrakul.

" How many legs on the moon shrew—?"

FUCKING MOON SHREWS
>>
>>46499772
at this point is it anything else?

This article confirmed that some large celestial body is being pulled to innistrad. All the ocean stuff is just where it happens to be landing, not actually coming out of the ocean itself.
>>
>>46499942
Well, uh, it could be Liliana or something. There are zombies and angels getting fucked over.

Liliana's not fat enough to alter the tides

>Jace is going insane

Sure hope he dies. A shame that Tamiyo saves his dumb ass from Avacyn.
>>
>>46500504
That's not actually true. Pure black mana has always been better at it than oil. Hell, Serra Angels were some of the most valuable forces against Yawgmoth, and the only one that aligned herself with Phyrexia...had already been cursed.
>>
>>46500716
>wanting Jace to die
>not wanting him to be literally blinded as a result of his actions while insane
>not wanting him to, unable to see through his own eyes, be forced to telepathically look through the eyes of others in order to perceive the world around him
>not wanting the madness to return in fits and spurts, granting him eldritch insights and useless flashes of the future that he can't interpret until they're already come to pass
>>
>>46500747
I thought Oil was a manifestation of black mana? maybe I was mistaken.
>>

>Making Jace an interesting character

I think you're expecting a bit much from the story team.
>>
>>46500826
To be fair, they already managed a hell of a lot in that direction since Origins.
>>
>>46500933
Yeah true, I will admit that even though I still kind of hate Jace because of how he was previously portrayed, he's actually become a kind of decent character since Origins. Ditto Gideon as long as you always keep in mind that he's probably constantly thinking about what happens when he fucks up and gets too arrogant (everyone around him explodes into gore).
>>
>>46499942
It could be something like

I don't know, something original or a new threat

Nothing about Emrakul is bad writing. It's like saying comic books are bad writing because they continue the plot from the last issue. They're bad writing but not because of serialized storytelling. No one thought Tarkir block was bad writing even though it was a direct set up for the following block just like BFZ was a set up for SOI.
>>
>this had Jace turning into a cute bunny girl

Ok, just to cover my ass, no one thought it was bad writing BECAUSE it was set up for BFZ is more specifically what I meant and not that no one thought KTK block had a bad story which is obviously wrong.

To be fair, throwing Phyrexia at something pretty much fucks that plane up bigtime. Innistrad can potentially recover from whatever is going on. but it couldn't 'stand up' against New Phyrexia I think, not unless they had some serious advencements between sets. And they wouldn't want to make Ravinca vs New Phyrexia either.

I'm just curious about what happened with Urabask, I thought he was the most interesting.

The Eldrazi are and probably really should have been a much bigger threat than Phyrexians. If they could come up with a way to eradicate two titans until they decide they want to come up with a reason for them to show up again, they can come up with a way for them to beat Phyrexians.

Phyrexia is meant to be one of those ramping up threats. They're a danger if they can find a bunch of weaker planes to dominate and compleat, and then they can use the combined forces of multiple planes to invade bigger planes and threats. But as it is, between the color division and just one plane, I think they won't be as major a player as old Phyrexia.

Besides, there's still the Jacetice league.

You say that like I prefer the eldrazi instead.
I dislike multiplanar threats in general unless they're shit like Ob Nixilis or Bolas once he finds his fucking coffee and starts doing shit. Just people with big egos that think being a planeswalker makes them more important than everyone else.

>Planned to come back
That doesn't make that shit a good idea. It turned the entire fucking weatherlight saga into a joke. It's no longer a story about how Urza defeated phyrexia it becomes a footnote. A really skippable footnote.
The entire story is now relegated to one of those "Thousands of years ago, a group of heroes banded together and saved the multiverse from the phyrexians, but they are returning" anime backstory bullshit. Fuck these stupid "muh hypnotizing oil" monsters. It's fucking old. New Phyrexia was interesting for all of that set but you fucks just beat the dead horse so much I wish the block ended with Karn dropping the white, red, and green suns on the plane and just artifact destructioning the entire thing.

I don't get why Jace acts like an average 20-something nerdy white dude that fumbles with women. When one's surname is the Mind fucking Sculptor, you'd expect them to have enough reasonable insights into human nature so as to be perfectly at ease in any social situation ever, right? Most of the social anxiety comes from not being afraid of what other people think, and guys' shyness comes from not knowing if a girl likes them. He's a little kid now exploring a plane tailor fit to fuck with him for being himself; ask too many questions, and you drown yourself in the unknowable.
>>
>>46505179
>he used to mind read his way through life before it almost killed him
I don't know the lore about this, could you elaborate Anon?
>>
>>46505238
He read a Sphinx's mind, Sphinx was doing some bad shit, then he got into a mind battle with said Sphinx, had to drop his defenses to get at him, and a side effect was having his memories blanked hh
>>
>>46505238
He used his mind reading to get a good life by blackmailing people with their secrets. That can't go wrong, and it didn't until Liliana used him to take the Infinite Consortium from Tezzeret. Leading to Jace fighting against Bolas and getting the high praise of knowing the only creature post mending to last longer in a fight against Bolas was Ajani. The issue was that the fight wasn't even Bolas trying Jace tried to read his mind while he should have been distracted by Tezzeret and got shit on.
>>
>>46505336
Why would you read a Sphinx's mind when they are known to be the among most mindfucking creatures in the multiverse

>>46505334
Why didn't he read Liliana's mind to check if she wasn't abusing him
>>
>>46505434
>Why would you read a Sphinx's mind when they are known to be the among most mindfucking creatures in the multiverse

It makes sense in context.
Mind you Jace gets neuralyzed a lot in his Origin story because he inevitably starts asking the wrong kinds of questions to that sphinx.
>>
>>46505434
Liliana was given protection magic by Bolas just for that reason. That's part of why Jace was so interested in her because he couldn't read her mind. The point is it was all a plan by Bolas and Liliana to gain control over the last multiverse spanning group.
>>
>>46505434
The sphinx was his trusted mentor and teacher, and was explicitly training him in his mind magic.
>>46505434
Bolas can prevent people from invading his and other people's minds. In fact this happens a lot to Jace explicitly to help with the fact that telepathy is a pretty busted power and many things that would be an issue or conflict is minimized when you can just read people's minds to solve the problem.

If you're willing to. Not if you have the capacity.

If you spent the early part of your life constantly and uncontrollably hearing the thoughts of everyone around you, then matured in isolation while honing your psychic abilities so as to have control over them, and finally realized that there are moral and ethical issues with reading others' thoughts and manipulating their minds, you'd be incredibly socially awkward. You missed your major socialization period, AND you spent your early life without any uncertainty. That means you're even less suited to dealing with the not knowing than most people.

They're not doing too badly at the moment. Most of the flagrancy over the BFZ block can be attributed to the shock of having to crank out the story over two sets, which even kicked the creative team in the ghoulies.

>>46515280

Mm, I also noticed that the drownyard structure is growing in size - the Nephalia Drownyard card has the ring be at sea level, and the Revelations card has it rising up.

Though, that could be... actually, that's probably low tide - allowing the cultists to walk in to the exposed ring.

Most importantly, it proves that Tamiyo is the best female planeswalker, just from her being a renaissance woman - skilled at drawing, anatomy, geology and something like late 19th century physics.

It all fits now.
>>
>>46515634

Yeah, they kindof failed to give any evidence that Sorin gave a fuck about Avacyn.

I liked her characterization in the brief moment before she was corrupted though. I didn't think it was very robotic, she seemed rather nice.

I suppose there's a possibility that she could be resurrected, as that's a feature of angels, just without that fixing the oldwalker-tier planar protections.

Plus legendary summons are basically copies of the real thing, and as Sorin created her in the first place, it could be that would pretty much count as a resurrection.

>>46515745

I think they might do a story section on Sorin and Avacyn's past. It'd make sense to establish their bond, let them slip in more worldbuilding for Innistrad's past and perhaps bring up the WB angel again.
>>
>>46515784

I really do hope there is some way for the angels and humans to trust in each other again after this rather than "Innistrad's fucked, but hey, fucking ZENDIKAR will be OK! Yay!"

It might be interesting at least if Nahiri's changing the rules of mana on Innistrad actually disables the "infinite lives cheat" the demons were using, or makes it possible for angels to do it as well.
>>
>>46515821
>disables the "infinite lives cheat"

That's an interesting thought!

Or if the whole supernatural playing field was wiped clean, leaving humans to enter an Age of Reason! (and Mad Science!)...

But from the sounds of the "Avacyn's death breaks the last wards protecting the plane" it sounds like things are going to go really badly for humanity. They might have been the last things preventing the emergence of the Eldritch Moon - Nahiri might have needed to drive Avacyn mad to force Sorin to kill her himself and break the warding.

Oh, also - from the talk of gravity as a thing that means anything to the heron moon, it seems that Innistrad is an actual planet rather than just a chunk of country and ocean floating in the void. Otherwise I don't think Tamiyo's calculations would be functional.

We've gotten confirmation of other continents on Innistrad, as well as a bit of detail on the composition of planes. Some of them are just weird disks, some of them are just planets with the planar boundary being the top of the atmosphere. Some are a small section of actual space-like space with a planet and moon(s), and hypothetically you could have one that was solar-system sized or even larger.

He believes Sorin is able to help them or inform them about the next threat they need to face ("Remember, they came as three"), so he heads of to the place where he believes he can find him.

Far more dubious is the fact that, despite being the magically elected administrative head of Ravnica, he insists on ignoring the entire plane for at least a couple of months by now. I think it is only a matter of time before Ral comes to fetch Jace to haul his ass back to office.

Jace talked about it to the merfolk he was travelling with for a while, you can leave the plane and then go back to a place as long as you remember where it is.
