Quick! You have 10 seconds to come up with an original concept or idea that adds a major twist to the conventional high fantasy setting.
GO!

Hard mode: No guns.
Hard mode plus: Humans only
>>
>>46482136
Anyone who dies via magical means is reincarnated 3 days later as a gender swapped version of themselves.
>>
Everyone is immortal, nobody can reproduce.
>>

I'd play it.

>>46482136
A sort of Tolken esque world, but set way back several thousand BC. The elves and Dwarves and the like have ruled the earth, at one with nature. However, the human's technologies have been improving, and they're developing civilization. Agriculture, large, multi-story buildings. Large-scale organization. The age of magic is ending, the age of man is beginning.

>GO!

Hard light, in an ancient era campaign.

No.2
Players play a neutral country during a war, having to take favours and give favours from the two warring factions. Diplomacy inc.
>>
The gods are actually all parasitic giants that thrive when people pray to them.

It's not actually a fantasy setting, it's a far off post apocalyptic setting and humans are the only 'pure' race, the rest are mutants descended from differently afflicted survivors.
>>
>>46482136
The world is starting to become affected by a black hole in space. Slowly it is torn asunder.
>>
>>46482194
Everyone is ageless, but can be killed, no one can reproduce.

There can be only one.

>>46482136
When you die your soul is malformed into some kinda of monster unless a ritual is performed upon your death.

Highly religious world and shit, monsters are double the humans
>>
The setting is both enviromentally lethal yet amazingly beautiful

Adventurers are mostly artist, cartographers and thrill seekers wanting to see the beauty of the world
>>
Combining the Ideas in this thread:
> Literally many thousand years ago, the Mages of the Kingdom Past discovered magics to prolong someones Life indefinitely by hardcoding him into reality.
> The only requirement for immortality is, that people remember you and think about you, as long as the Idea of ( You ) exists, you will keep living.
> The Wizards enchanted the Richest of the Rich first, making them the First Methuselah
> Over Time the Methusalemisation of Society by procreation and breeding gradually succeeded.
> However, the very same Sorcerers who had initially enchanted the Elder Methuselah discovered, that there isn't enough Paradigm to go around. Statistically, there needs to be like a dozen People or so who think about you, in order to remain living.
>>
>>46482928
>as long as the Idea of ( You ) exists, you will keep living.

Here's your (You).
>>
>>46482928
> Very fast the Elder Methuselah decided, that henceforth Magic was the biggest threat to their survival: Casting Spells to manipulate minds into forgetting someone was suddenly the worst thing to be happening.
> At the same time, the Elders discovered the Problem the Wizards had figured out, and they discovered that the Wizards were preparing to undo the Methuselah Sorcery.
> Consequently the Elders struck first and wiped the Wizards from Existance.

> In the subsequent Millenia, with the Methuselah Blood running thinner among the Populace, the Problem increased: Youngones would need a hundred or so people to remember them somewhere in their mind semi actively in order to remain living.
> The Sorcery was inherited, such that on the Birth of someone it was necessary to have a gathering of hundreds of people just to ensure survival of the Infant.

> Truth of the Matter is: There aint enough memory to go around. As in all social cliques, there's those who are outcast, cabals forming and people falling in and out of favour.
> Theres Schisms: People splitting off, creating communities dedicated to some weird Religion or trying to reverse the Process.
(cont)
.
>>
>>46482952
THE NOW:
> Population is steadily declining.
> With thinblooded Methuselah Infertility is rampant, no new children are born anymore.
> All the other Religions and smaller Sects have already died out due to being FORGOTTEN.
> Two major Cabals Remain:

# # The Living Childer of the Elder
These are the ones actively participating in society, running it, working the farms for leisure and luxury foods etc. They live in a High-Magitech Utopia, even though each year marks about a .05% Population De-Crease. The Elders are worshipped as Gods, and the TRUTH is surpressed. Only the Elder know the extent of the Sorceries Mishap. The Elders calculate that they have many dozens of Millenia to go and figure that eventually maybe they can cure these problems:
> With Infertility, no new Humans and thus no new People capable of Magic are Born.
> Without Magicians whom they eradicated, they cannot modify or rectify the CURSE OF IMMORTALITY

# # The Forever Dreamers
Are under a Drug allowing them to lucidly realize their surroundings but live in a Dreamstate. They are arranged in Large Gardens where they are propped up in Stadiums. Each Dreamer is actively seeing the Body of dozens of other Dreamers - this is the way they keep from Forgetting.
THE BOREDOM is what makes Dreamers leave the Theatres, but they will survive far longer than the Living Childer.

Atrmosphere is Bleak. No new Children, no Progress, no Respite, no Optimism. For Millenia you vegetate in an Utopia, and slowly people fade away as there just isnt enough ATTENTION to go around.

Bitches dont know about anthropomorphic personification.

http://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/Anthropomorphic_personification
>>
Undeath only exists as a result of an ancient human empire trying to use magic to make themselves immortal out of jealousy at the unfairness that Elves get to live basically forever.

It worked... kind of. The art of Lichcraft is the first and most ancient form of undeath, one that is almost entirely lost to time and known only to the few liches that still remain in the world. Most successful necromancers manage to make themselves into Vampires eventually, but this means that vampires are something of an evolving process. Each new vampire (and thus any thralls it creates) is a result of personal dark research and tends to have slightly different powers and weaknesses. Vulnerability to sunlight and dependence on blood to survive are the only known constants, but in theory someday a vampire will be created that can walk in the daylight.

Other necromancers, in their attempt to come up with their own solution, succeed only in making themselves into some brand new kind of (often mindless) undead abomination.

Lanarc the Benevolent is the lich considered the most dangerous of all undead that walk the Earth, as he features prominently in the legends stemming from the fall of the great human empire. He was one of the ten wizards that fathered undeath magic, and his still believes that it is the destiny of man to inherit eternal afterlife through necromancy. His research continues, and he sees spreading the art of necromancy, and its blessings, as a form of poorly appreciated altruism.

Magic causes gradual degradation, not to the world around it, but to the caster. The more powerful the magic, the greater the degradation.

The degradation varies, though some swear they can control it. Sometimes you might lose feeling in a finger or a limb might stop working. Sometimes you feel no effect and think maybe you got lucky, maybe its something too minor to notice, but you just got several steps closer to early-onset Alzheimers.

The greatest wizards are those who got lucky and only lost physical mobility. They can craft magical devices to move around whereas there is no luck for the others.

Many wizards build towers to lock themselves up. After all, a senile man with alzheimers and the power to unmake reality would be exceedingly dangerous.

Recognize that the concept of putting an "original" spin on fantasy is the stalest possible thing that you can do.

Run the most-conventional high-fantasy setting possible.
>>
>>46484431
Wheel of time did it, with magic causing insanity and sickness in male users.
>>
>>46482136
All the conventional fantasy races have gone extinct. Mankind lives and scavenges from the ruins of the old races.

Humans can't naturally control magic, save perhaps rare exceptions. In order to use magic normal humans have to channel it through "artifacts" left over from the old races. Even something as simple as a +1 sword is enough to channel some weaker magics. With more powerful artifacts being the only way to access greater powers.

Using artifacts drains their power meaning that there is a huge market to delve into the ruins of the dead races to get magic items to use for channeling magic.

If you like an apocalyptic aesthetic than you can say the thing that caused the old races to go extinct left the world a barely habitable desert, like a nuclear wasteland.

If you don't like that aesthetic than you can just have earth-like biomes.

The Wheel of Time series is a huge ass story. The reason why male magic users go insane is because the male half of the magical source was tainted. Any man that touched the source went insane.
>>
>>46484898
Pretty good, if fairly standard heroes journey with an incredibly detailed setting. Skip book 10, and only read the last hundred pages of 9. Everything else is great.

In a previous era, male magic users united against the devil and tried to imprison him. Because women magic users were too busy being bitches to help, the attack against the devil was flawed, but still successful. This resulted in its temporary imprisonment, but also a magical curse on all male wizards that drives them insane the more magic they use. This resulted in all male wizards going insane and spending the next couple hundred years arbitrarily rearranging continents. Thousands of years later, humanity has turned into a female dominated society, and it's up to three men to fix everything.

Actually got a whole thing from Dark Souls and "souls are currency" system.

>Medieval setting, humans only, low magic
>Populace is relatively unaware of magic as its few users are kept under strict control/watch by the monarchy, they're treated essentially as part of the royalty though so long as they serve the ruling family so its aight
>The immortality question inevitably pops up and the mages get to work
>Figure out how to make reincarnation work, apply the target with a particular spell and kill them, they will reappear to the nearest+strongest radiation source
>Typically this will be an open fire
>It works but having your body reformed at the center of a fire is hella painful and pretty disfiguring, if the initial shock doesn't break the targets' sanity then the rejection from society will
>More experiments are done trying to perfect the process, as well as on the "rejects" to gleam any useful info
>This info is that souls are essentially the source of magic, and if you glob enough together you will get better effects
>The first magical creatures are born this way, but they typically go batshit insane from having conflicting minds and bodies
>Theoretically, mentally stable creatures can be made if the souls are of "like minds"

>A perfected version of the reincarnation spell is turned into a plague and those affected only have a small burn mark notifying the process after they die the first time. They are practically the same as they were before dieing, in mind and body.
>The PCs are the first successful Dark Sign

>Making chimeras and crazed zombies are fun, but the reincarnation process isn't perfect yet due to the whole "fire is incredibly painful" thing, and no one knows what to really do with the chimeras outside of circus attractions
>Along the way, with more experimental murders and horrific chimeras, the mages figure out they can actually USE the increases in magical power
>When a creature reincarnates in the flames, the energy emitted by the fire becomes magical in nature, but only during the reincarnation process
>GetTheOvens.jpg
>Furnaces and forges are specially made to be large enough to attract souls to reincarnate, but small enough so that they will quickly die after they are reborn from their own flames
>The first magical artifacts are made this way, their power is related to the number of souls used by the furnace
>The royal family takes particular interest because these magical items can be used by anyone, and can technically be made by anyone so long as they possess a soul-furnace
>As for the poor souls trapped in these things, "Dying to Death" becomes a thing and their sanities quickly deteriorate in their own personal hells, the sanity loss is compounded by the fact that each artifact removes portions of their souls permanently
>In addition, they merge into even stronger, and more monstrous chimeras than what was originally intended, the sounds of the soul furnaces can be deafening and nightmare inducing
>Thankfully, these super-monsters are contained so long as the furnace walls are gradually updated, and magical items keep getting produced to reduce the power of whatever lays inside

The plot can pretty much go anywhere from the last post. Although leaving the 'no guns' mode-

>Centuries later, the world now parallel to ours in terms of scientific advancement

>The first nuclear reactors are developed
>Intentionally or otherwise, the reincarnation spell goes haywire as the new conditions were never anticipated by those original mages from hundreds of years ago
>The reactors cause immediate insanity and attract souls from immense distances due to the sheer power emitted
>Critical mass is reached from millions of souls essentially being locked in a single furnace, eldritch gods of incomprehensible power are born from these reactors
>Ironically, they pose only an indirect threat to humanity as they have gone so insane that their actions and behaviors are entirely ambivalent to the existence of anything else. Many details are unconfirmed, but they seem to be on an entirely different plane of thought and morality, some of these beings simply leave Earth or even stay inside their reactors
>The true threat is from humanity itself once again, armed with weapons of equally incomprehensible yet terrifying power, the world is in a permanent state of Cold War with all nuclear capable countries, and less advanced ones are desperately trying to acquire the secrets of nuclear fission to create their own monstrous gods
>The end of the world seems to be possible at any moment, with global politics constantly on the brink of unleashing their magical WMDs or an eldritch entity deciding that the world would look a lot nicer if it was on fire
