Is poker a game of luck or skill?
>>
>>46479037
Yes.
>>
>>46479037
Both. The skill is in how you react to the luck.
>>
>>46479037
Depends on your local legislative.
>>
I don't play, but from what my bro told me it's a game where unlike most casino games you can influence the odds, so skill in that aspect. However like most things it boils down to luck. He also says it's a surprisingly psychological game as well.
>>
>>46479037
It's a shit game is what it is
>>
It's a game of money.
>>
>>46479384

Justify yourself.
>>
>>46479037
It's a risk management game.
>>
>>46479646
No, that's M:tG.
>>
>>46479061
This. Like most board games which aren't Candyland or Chess, it combines both elements.
>>
>>46479061
Not to mention that you have to manage and account for the way every other player is reacting to whatever luck they may or may not be having.
>>
>>46479037

It's a risk-management game. If you have no idea whats going on you will get stomped.
>>
>>46479691
That's a game of autism.
>>
>>46479037
It's a game of reading the player, just like literally any other good game.
The games that can be played without reading the player - like the games where optimal move can be decided upon using only the board state, like chess, go etc. - are inherently worse than games that require reading the player.

I don't know how to play poker at all, but isn't there strategy element with holding onto cards and choosing when to play them?
>>

Explain

/thread in the first post, as usual.

You win.
>>
>>46480057
No, that's tic-tac-toe.
>>
>>46479037
Don't listen to people in this thread OP. It's a game of cards
>>
>>46480057
Autismoney
>>
>>46479037
Both. Some variants are more leaned towards one side than the others.

Texas Hold'em involves significantly more skill than 5-draw, for instance.
>>
>>46479037
Definitely both.
>tfw consistently cash at tournaments but absolutely horrendous heads-up
Clearly I've got luck without the skill.
>>
>>46480178
No, everyone plays their cards at the end. The strategy is all about when to bet (to increase the pot if you have a strong hand, or to represent a stronger hand to push other players out of the betting), and when to cut your losses.
>>
>>46484715
Also, mind games
>>
>>46479088

this. since unlicensed gambling/games of chance are illegal in many parts of the world, the question of whether or not poker is a game of luck or skill is actually a legal question, not a metagaming one.

check your local civic and state ordinances to determine the definitive answer.

Skill.
theres a lot of luck involved ofc but luck alone can get you far only one hand or two before you opponent finished reading you and stripping you of every single cent you have in your pocket.
Every move in poker is literally made to test you opponents in order to read them. A skilled player can strip a newbie of everything regardless of luck. guess its story time.
>Me and a ciuple of my friends were playing regularly almost every saturday night small games of poker
>since we were broke as shit we played like 5 euros per night-we were REALLY broke.
>then this guy gets invited-lets call him Sean.
>He's the most beta, assface obese retarded I ever saw
>begins telling us how GOOD he is at poker, brags about how easy it will be for him to win for like 20 minutes
>"Sean, where do you play?"
>"I play online!"
>Ohboy.jpg
>we begin
>we change 2 bucks each in chips
>he immediately starts rasising every time
>hes literally smirking
>I mean, he's bluffing so hard you can see it
>we let him win a couple of hands
>then the slaughter begins
>As i said, the MOST we ever paid on one night was 5 bucks, because we kept playing every week with the chips we got on earlier weeks, and at the end of the month we ended it and crowned the winner
>in less than two hours he lost 30 bucks
>he cries all night on bad luck
>I go to sleep because I have to work at 4 am
>fall asleep on him ranting his mom wanting him to go to church
>he's over 30
>mfw

Oh man, I just imagined a movie about a card shark who challenges a judge who adamantly believes that it's all dumb luck, and has to convince him that he can consistently win fair and square, and is thus skilled at this game of dumb luck.
>>
>>46488521
Are you referencing a certain law case against pinball machines?
>>
>>46479037
It's a game built upon luck, but the outcome can be influenced by Skill, like Rock-Paper-Scissors, but less luck-driven.
>>
>>46479923
This. There's definitely some skill to how you play an individual hand, but much of it comes down to the luck of the draw (which is one reason all those James Bond-type movies where the best player always ends up with a straight flush or some shit is stupid). But betting is where most of the skill lies, and understanding how far to go on what hands. Basically, you've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.

>>46488204
>Be drunk
>somehow end up in to a poker game
>1st good hand bet like a motherfucker and win
>7 rounds fold decent- good hands
>8th or 9th game start betting like a motherfucker
>win big with ace high because they "read a drunk like a 90 fontsize times roman" so they expected a good hand
>fuck off because strat has been blown and few dudes were upset and they were strangers.
>>
>>46489746
made me chuckle
drunk games probably are awesome, we once did that but we were ALL drunk and we ended betting no real money
we could barely count our chips, it was so retarded it was one of our best games
We literally "bluffed" most of the time thinking(we were really drunk)we were masterminds and then we get angry when everyone had shit cards and no one folded
10/10

now its been a few years im not playing, lost touch with my friends. Im trying to convince a couple of hotties i know to play strip poker because im acting like i never played and it could be fun for all.
>>
>>46479037
Skill and luck both come into it, but for the vast majority of games, the guy who knows the odds and plays to win is going to calmly grind that game out by making safe, rational bets. It's not this "A strong hand, Mr Bond, but not as strong as my full house!" flashy crap some people think it is.
>>
>>46490025
Depends, these things happens quite often. Literally, everything you do in poker is to make you opponent act in a way you can extrapolate information from.

Oh, and forgot: there's also math, because you have to literally count the chances of cards beign flipped.
this on my guess everyone's talking about hold em? because regular poker is a LOT more based on pure luck. And by a LOT i mean they are two completely different games.
