For me it's Troyes. I really enjoy the game, but I'm not going to spend $150 on it.

Shit, Troyes is $150?

That's my very favorite board game and it makes me sad more people can't play it.

Blood Bowl's current prices are stupid, a friend of mine had it in the 90s and I loved it, so stoked for the reprint next year.

Headpats for the gamer girl.

>What games do you want to own, but you haven't pulled the trigger yet because the cost is prohibitive?
Quite a few, but the longest I've wanted yet held out on is Trains. It's not $100+ expensive, but it is expensive enough that I struggle to justify the price.

>>46469641
I recognize the bottom right as a Japanese card game. Bottom left seems to be a roll and move game I'm guessing.

>>46458405
In TotAN, you first draw a card, which will show you what table to roll on. You then roll, and referring to the chart you'll get a headline of sorts to describe the general situation you'll get, like Bandits, Terrible Storm, or Strange Artifact. You then choose from a list of options to respond with, which is different depending on the encounter. Then you roll another die to modify the result, and the reader finally reads through your fate.

It is a bit convoluted, but that's because the encounters are the main thing for Tales of the Arabian Nights. You could probably simplify it a lot more, and make the 'area reveal' a lot more flavourful and cinematic if you want to using this. A more recent example using a mechanic like this is Above and Below, when exploring the caves. Not sure how different it is though.

> Can people post good co-op games? Want some "shit is hitting the fan" moments to have with my game group. Looking at Xenoshyft Onslaught right now.

I like XenoShyft, but I can't claim it's a 'good' co-op. There's a lot of randomness to it that can quickly kill a team simply due to bad luck. I'm not sure if they've fixed the balance issues with the newer KS or not.

You might look at Gears of War if you can find it - it's a kick-ass co-op for 1 to 4 players. There's also Level 7's Omega Protocol, but one player controls the enemies actions. Robinson Crusoe is a great co-op that beats you down and comes with a lot of replayability.

On the lighter end of things you've got Forbidden Island and the more challenging Forbidden Desert.

Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Operations

I know it's worth the price and I know I love the game, but it's been hard to justify the pricetag for something you play by yourself.
>>
>>46471348
Doesn't the hornet leader series have a print and play version somewhere?
>>
>>46471414

One of the older iterations has a paid P&P version.

I'd want it on nice materials anyway, so it wouldn't really save much/any money to go that route.
>>
>>46471238
Xenoshyft can be hard, but it's not the most difficult to win game I've played, I have about a 50-60% win rate solo controlling two random lanes (using the phone app). There's a few basic strategy tips that will greatly increase your chances, like how good stromtroopers are in wave 4-6 and keeping a hyperion with armor in the back of a lane on waves 7-9 to protect from deathspurs.

>What games do you want to own, but you haven't pulled the trigger yet because the cost is prohibitive?

I usually don't look much at costs when I absolutely need a game but I don't *need* anything right now.

That said if I had intinite money I'd get (but I'm not getting it now because)

Discworld: Ankh Morpork - I love Pratchett and heard it's a nice game. I don't *need* it because I'm the only one who has read anything from Discworld in my group.

Chos in the Old World - seems like a nice deep game. My group often plays at 6, and we have a lot of people who don't make deep players and I heard that the game is unforgiving this way - a weak player is basically a kingmaker.

RuneWars - I like fantasy and I like grand strategy. My group plays at 6 often, though.

Samurai Spirit - looks like a nice coop but I have Ghost Stories which seems similar.

Expansions to the games I have - LNoE,
Kemet, Imperial Settlers. I don't feel like I need them, though they would probably add taste.

There's proably a ton of other games I'd get with infinite money but these are at the top of the list right now.
>>
>>46475414
The Kemet expansion is lackluster.
>>
>>46472949
I haven't played the App, I was thinking about snagging it on Steam. In the card game version stormtroopers are nice, but getting the credits to afford them fast enough isn't common. I do usually play with 4 lanes - I'll have to try it with 2.

>Deception Murder in Hong Kong is getting the reprint within the next month or so.

I often leave a game setup in my living room in the hopes company that comes over will express interest in trying out a game. No one does, and I sometimes think of playing the game by myself.

I mean, they are open to the idea of games. A lot of casual games like Live Letters, Sushi Go and Resistance they like. Plus, I have been able to get them to play Dead of Winter and Pandemic for the co-op nature and theme alone, but I'll never get them to play anything more complex than that.

I feel your pain Anon.
>>
>>46475427
Hmm saw the review and it looked nice, I especially liked the modularity. I'm mostly interested in the new cards, dawn phase and the black pyramid. Heard it changes the dynamics a bit, though.
>>
>sentinels of the multiverse
>last night on earth

What are people's opinion on these two? I've tried multiple times and I've found both to be incredibly boring to play, but I don't hear them mentioned very often.
>>
>>46476065
Board games are easy to play with any kind of friends, so if you have friends that don't play anything just invite them to hobby. I have never had anyone turn down offer to try out board game. I'd understand if it this RPGs (genuinely hard to find players for them and GMs even harders), but board games have appeal to most people.

Just be brave and ask your friends if they would like to play a game. Do this while you're drinking with friends or something and you're guaranteed to get game going.
>>
So, my LGS installed a bar. In related news, I bought Roll Through the Ages Bronze Age and Sushi Go.

Anyone ever play these? Should I even bother trying to break them out when my friend visits?
>>
>>46476517
I love Last Night on Earth. Only played it three times so far but each one was a blast (well the second time a guy got very salty when playing zombies.

Still - the game is ton of fun of the beer and pretzels variety. We like everything about the game from the porny look, scenarios to the machanics.

It's the antithesis of what I look in a game because it's very luck driven (roll to move, random cards). Sometimes it feels like the characters don't have a chance, sometimes it feels like the zombie player gets buttraped for nothing.

I have much fun each time I play it.
>>
>>46477140
It really depends.

People don't have problem playing casual games and sometimes even a moderatly heavy game like Kemet or Power Grid.

If you to sperg out to something like TI3 or Terra Mystica than you're shit out of luck - you need dedicated players that really want to play board games not just socialize.
>>
>>46477391

Which just baffles me to no end. I adore games like dungeonquest and talisman, which are about as random as you can get. I keep thinking it's just the aesthetics they put into it. I like how they got away from the look in...shadows maybe? Idk, in one of FF recent products they didn't go with the B movie look. Some people think it's charming, it just looks lazy and like they wanted to save money by not having an actual artist do illustrations.
>>
>>46477422
More complex games I personally have done with casuals quite often would be Arkham Horror and Heroquest, but I guess they're not very complex compared to some more hardcore stuff. No idea of titles you mentioned though.

Suburbia or Castles of Mad King Ludwig?
>>
>>46477140
>I have never had anyone turn down offer to try out board game.

>People don't have problem playing casual games and sometimes even a moderatly heavy game like Kemet or Power Grid.

You lucky pieces of shit.
I've had all kinds of people turn down Sushi Go, Love Letter, and other light simple games. The only people I've actually gotten o play board games with me is my old RPG group.

It probably has some to do with the fact that where I am (the ass end of Louisiana), what you're supposed to do for fun is drink, watch football, fish, and maybe tv and movies if you don't have anything else to do. And people will stare at you like you have two heads if they ask what you did over the weekend and you tell them you played board games with your friends (especially if you tell them the name of it and it's not monopoly). Tradition and fitting in is paramount in the south.
>>
>>46478699

Not played Suburbia, but I recommend Castles of Mad King Ludwig. If you do get it, I also recommend picking up the recently released expansion, Secrets, which improves the base game in several ways:

Swans give players an additional way to score points at the end of the game, give the Master Builder more decision with regards to what they choose to price their room tiles at, and provides cash potential cash injection into what is (with the exception of the Outdoor Room completion bonus) otherwise a largely closed system with regards to income.

The moats are also fantastic, greatly reducing your options when it comes to room tile placement (and thus giving the Master Builder more control over how he chooses to price room tiles), but potentially providing lucrative rewards if you can complete your moat and build your entire castle inside it.

Also, the artwork across both is top notch. Great care and attention to detail with the room tiles, with each tile depicting what you'd expect the room to look like. Think Caverna.

>what you're supposed to do for fun is drink
Thing is that mixes pretty damn well with board games (especially those simple ones) and when people are sufficiently drunk they're more willing to game. I personally love drinking some good beer and whiskey with friends while we play board games.

Assuming ofcourse that by drinking you didn't mean that people get so shitfaced that they can't do anything and fall asleep.
>>
>>46479155
>Assuming ofcourse that by drinking you didn't mean that people get so shitfaced that they can't do anything and fall asleep.

This has been my only experience with drinking and boardgames, and has soured my opinion of mixing the two. Drinking with fillers is fine, but for heavier weight competitive games? I want to feel like my opponent is playing at their peak and be challenged, rather than steamroll over them because alcohol is hindering their ability to think critically.
>>
>>46479208
Well, I prefer more casual gaming just for fun, but never had problem with drinking while doing so. It might be also that me and my friends just resist alcohol's effects particularly well since we have managed to have a game of Munchkin when we're so drunk that we couldn't see what cards read very well. Not that I recommend trying that because drinking such amounts is inceribly unhealthy. The key is moderation. Something like 4-6 beers does it to me and my friends without making us too drunk.

>>46479302
>Drunk enough to play munchkin on purpose

>What games do you want to own, but you haven't pulled the trigger yet because the cost is prohibitive?

well, these days I am dirt poor, and my wife isn't the one who splurges on pricey pieces of cardboard, so my dreams of buying new boardgames is about as dead as canadian teams in the NHL playoffs this year.

Someday, I will get Kemet, El Grande, and Theseus. been pumped about those games for years, and got to play Kemet this past winter at a board game cafe, and loved it.

>$95+shipping for a copy
Nnnghhhh I just can't justify it.
>>
>>46481042
Let me help you then:

It's published by Eagle Gryphon Games, which is run by utter scumbags. From never to be delivered kickstarters (Fallen City of Karez) to litigious lawsuits (Brass) to constantly blaming the printer on all their mistakes (Tumbling Dice and others) to intentionally pushing out versions of games that they knew were getting updated shortly anyways (Through the Ages) they're just a right bunch of assholes. Oh, and they try to price fix the market.

So I don't buy shit from them, no matter how appealing it looks. There's plenty of other companies on the market that I do like; I can afford to be picky.
>>
>>46481160
I looked up some of that stuff as well as the shipping scamming for The Gallerist they've done to a lot of people.

Thanks for helping me make up my mind. EGG will go right beside Asmodee on my shelf of 'not buying shit from'.

On the plus side I now no longer have any qualms about making my own Tumbling Dice board.

Well he said 4-6 drinks, which is technically "binge drinking" but in my college days we called that lunch, so I could see it happening.

>>46478823
It's not easy anon, but it's definitely doable, you just have to find games that thematically appeal to the crowd, and start very slow. Any friend of mine who has even slight interest in tg hobbies is 4+ hours away so I've been taking time the last year to work on family and friends that are local and as far from gamers as you get. Here's my best conversion method so far:

Show up at a friend's house, bring beer (a goodly amount) and a simple dexterity game. Coconuts/Rhino Hero/Toc Toc have all worked best, Animal Upon Animal is too cutesy, Hamsterolle is too abstract. When they open the door hand them the case of beer, tell them to drop it in the fridge and pull 2 for each of you. Set the game up on the coffee table in the meantime, kick on whatever sporting event is on, and during commercials take your turns. I did this with my best friend who's fire/medic, made sure he was going to be home on part of his 4 day, and it gave us something to do while watching college football.

After you've done this a couple times, bring over a game that matches the sport you're going to watch. You've got football fans? Go get 1st & Goal. I've been using the current Nascar season to convert my brother-in-law with Thunder Alley after the above trick. It works better if it's a sport/team you're not interested in and they are; let them try to suck you into their hobby while you get them into yours.

>>46481863

Last step is you have to involve the wives/gfs. Find a good double date game, keep it gateway weight, and convince your gf that you need to get together with the other couple for drinks/dinner. Set the game on the table, have some beer/wine, and make something that can be eaten with your hands. Try not to pick anything too cutthroat the first time, the idea is to make it a pleasant experience, so that the significant others see it as a date night and time to spend out. It also appeals to a lot of my friends who want to stay in their wife's good graces without having to spend a bundle or dress up. You've now gone from having a 2s gaming buddy to a full table; it might not be seeing TI3 or TM right away, but you have an option, and as long as you keep it simple to 1-2 games a night (and keep that 2nd game a filler that can be played after there's been drinking) you won't scare anyone off either.

Anon, if you're living in "the ass end of Louisiana" have no friends that you share any hobbies with, no family to draw on locally for gaming, and you're painfully single, it's time to stop fighting it and just become a lonely problem drinker for fun. If that doesn't appeal to you, you're in the perfect part of the country to go hit up churches. Great place to meet girls that are relationship/marriage material, oftentimes will have events for youth/college aged people, and as long as you're not bringing out CitOW you'll prolly be able to interest them in games as a hobby.

How is Chaos in the Old World? Would it be an enjoyable game for people that aren't into GW products?

Simple flow chart for Chaos in the Old World

How many people do you have that would be willing to play it somewhat regularly?

Four: It's a great game of apples to oranges balance, every god feels 'overpowered' has great abilities and unique objectives.

Three: Still pretty good, board can feel a little empty and there can be a lack of combat.

Two: Please don't.

Also in my personal opinion you shouldn't buy Asmodee/FFG products from a retailer. But that's just cause I'm a salty manchild who is boycotting them.
>>
>>46483888
I've never really had any exposure to GW or Warhammer, but I did enjoy it since it's a mechanically solid game on its own. The visual design of the board is pretty shit though.
If you've ever played Rex, it is vaguely similar. They both feature unique player powers that shape your playstyle, and are both area control games. Overall, I like Rex better due to the alliance mechanic, and the combat is also more interesting. They're both great games.
