Life has made it harder to be close because of how we have to schedule our lives and how a large chunk of our lives will be spent in unfamiliar territory - at college, a new town, ect. I mean, sure, oftentimes the people I play TTRPGs with, I'm closer to than idle friends, since we hang out before and after sessions sometimes and occasionally share other activities. But I've still only known these people for part of a year, and only at odd times of the week. There's been a lot of talking, but never really an opportunity to become close. And even if I had a few years, could I become close friends with these people? Could I do this to the degree that I could play anything I wanted at the table without fear of judgement from my peers? I don't know.
And this gets even worse if you take into account that a lot of people on /tg/ probably play their games online, due to problems finding games in their area or to find people with similar interests even if in different time zones. You don't develop close friendships with online people. Sometimes you can get pretty close, enough to banter and have fun together, but you can never get that closeness and understanding real world friends have.
I guess if you're unlucky like me, and didn't have friends to play tabletop games with until you were at least in high school, you probably lost out. You'll always be playing games with fairly friendly strangers, and you'll always have to play it safe. This might be affected by mindset, of course - I know some people that want to put everything out on the table right at the start, and if people don't like it they can go - but I tend to be reluctant to be more than reserved, and I'm pretty sure a fair chunk of /tg/ is the same way.
