You are Ur'shal, Chieftain of the Stonetusk Clan and Warlord of the Wastes. Your clan rings with the clamour of war preparations, your lieutenants and pack leaders whipping your warriors into fighting shape as weapons and armor are prepared for the war with Slaagyr to come. Despite your own position you find yourself with increasingly little to do aside from broad commands to your lieutenants to keep up the good work, and stepping into personally make an example of the occasional troublemaker who takes their brawling too far.

As you await the return of your scouts, and perhaps your spies in Slaagyr's camp, provided they still live, you are in a position to, at least for the moment, relax a little and enjoy yourself. In this particular instance, that means a long overdue hunt with your two old friends, Zo'rok and Dru'ak. Along with your warbeast Raka, you have pressed south into the jungle, in search of worthy quarry to bring you glory and the favor of the goddess of the hunt, Tak'zaya Ska.

With the shifters dealt with, the elves either enslaved or having fled south to the larger enclaves, and the troglodytes suitably cowed, you have a great deal of leeway in the jungle. Unfortunately, this is more due to a power vacuum than your clan truly controlling the territory, as you simply lack the forces to patrol such a wide region. For the most part things have been quiet, the abyssal elves have yet to be seen since your first encounter with them, and your hunters have the borders of the Elder Serpent's territory well mapped to avoid accidentally straying into it. Still, a little cautious may be warranted, as there are still occasional sightings of the strange mosquito-like creatures and their shambling minions lurking in the jungle, not to mention the threat of Xipil's cultists pushing north.

Raka sniffs at the ground, the heavyset bandersnatch clambering through the undergrowth, tearing aside the more troublesome growth with his heavy foreclaws. So far things have been quiet, the trails of a few smaller jungle beasts which might make for a good meal, but nothing worthy of hunting personally.

“Anything over there?” you grunt, looking to Zo'rok as he crouches a little way to the west, palm to the soft earth.

“Some larger tracks, but they're old, beast could be long gone by now,” he shrugs.

“Nothing,” Dru'ak concurs, resting his spear on his shoulder as he lets his gaze sweep the tree line.

“We could head a little deeper, I think our hunters have already scared away a lot of the prey this close to camp,” Zo'rok explains as he rises, scratching at his jaw.

>Start following those old tracks to the west, if you're lucky the beast hasn't gone far

Aw yeah, is it good to be back.
>>46412267
For those who have forgotten, to the west are the abyssal elves, to the south is Xipil and possibly the serpent.
Does Raka understand Ur's speech? If so, tell him to be on the lookout to smells similar to the camp's lamias.
>>Push further south in search of better hunting deeper in the jungle
I don't want to have to deal with abyssal shit on our hunt.
At most we'll find out if one of our enemies has expanded/are daring closer to us, since we aren't horrible at stealth. Might be fun to accidentally bump into a threat on our hunt and for the three of us to clear it out just like that.
Then again, if we run into lamia, we will probably want to retreat, and only other threats would be the mosquitos.

“Agreed, let's head south,” you grunt, gesturing for the others to follow as you press deeper into the jungle, Raka bounding ahead, pausing occasionally to sniff the air.

The jungle grows darker the deeper you go, the canopy thicker and more tangled the further you move from the desiccating influence of the Great Wastes, blocking out the sun, the sounds of wildlife echoing around you.

Raka gives a low snort, stubby tail wagging as he looks around at you, before turning back to sniff at the ground once more, weaving in tight circles. Picking your way through the undergrowth, you catch up with the warbeast, crouching down to investigate the source of his excitement. It's a trail, and quite a strange one at that. Two sets of clawprints, small but deep, pressed into the ground, the tangled plant matter around the prints ragged, as if shredded by countless small blades. Whatever it is, it didn't pass this way all that long ago.

You wave your friends over, setting off after this new creature. You don't recognize the tracks, but from the depth of them, it must be quite heavy despite the small prints, or weighed down by something perhaps. The mystery creature's route takes you on a winding path through the jungle, the sound of running water growing louder as you go, until it becomes almost deafening. The reason becomes apparent soon enough, as you peer out from between the tangled branches to spot a river, the noise coming from a waterfall cascading down a sheer rock face a short distance away.

“Is that it,” Dru'ak whispers, nodding to a strange looking creature as it picks its way up the rocks to the side of the waterfall, scrambling up what look to be an eroded set of carved steps.

It's slightly larger than you, bounding between the water-slicked and uneven stone with two sets of long, wiry legs ending in small, hook-nailed claws. Its body is thin and serpentine, the skin jet black, with patches of dull, purple-blue scales running along the sides bearing an oily look to them. Its head is long and narrow, two sets of tiny beady eyes on each side above a long mouth filled with needle-sharp teeth. More interestingly is the way it carries its cargo upon its back, two bodies, one human, one troglodyte, most likely dead judging by the vicious tears in the flesh. The dangle over the creature's body, hands and feet bound with knotted vines, which suggest that the beast may not be entirely mindless.

It turns its head, letting its gaze sweep across the area, passing right by your hiding place without a glimmer of recognition. Pausing, it angles its head up, the skin on the back of the skull unfurling into a great frill as it opens its mouth to let out a harsh shriek which sets your tusks on edge. With that done, the frill flattens, the creature scampering up a little further on the rock face, pausing at a curious slab of stone which you suspect may once have been a door, and now lies half-crumbled over the collapsed entranceway it covered. Tugging the first of the bodies from its back with its hooked claws, the creature lifts it to the narrow gap, trying to push the body through the space into the chamber beyond, from the way the body jerks, you suspect the beast may have some aid from a creature on the other side, perhaps a whole family of them live within.

“What now? Want to take it?” Dru'ak frowns, watching the thing as it jams more and more of the troglodyte's body through the gap, occasionally pausing to snap a difficult bone or tear off a chunk of flesh which is impeding its passage.

“Wait, let's see what it does,” you grunt, keeping your eye on the creature as it works.

Eventually, it manages to cram the remains of the troglodyte through the gap, before turning its attention to its slightly larger human cargo. Apparently it's got a good enough eye to recognize the fact that the human carcass is too large before it starts, instead settling for pinning it down underfoot and tearing it into smaller pieces with its jaws, before carefully feeding them through the gap one by one.

When its grisly work is finally finished, the creature takes one last glance around, giving a final low, hissing bark, before it puts its claws up to the side of the small and now gore-encrusted opening atop the collapsed door. You watch curiously as it angles its head to the gap, watching bones pop from joints as it squeezes first one forelimb, then the other, through the gap, its oily hide and flexible skeletal structure allowing it to slither through the gap which looks barely wide enough to fit your leg through.

“No way we're following it through that unless we pull the whole door out of the way,” Zo'rok whispers, eyeing the gap.

“Which they'll probably hear,” Dru'ak nods in agreement.

You sigh, pulling out your rough map, marking down the location on it.

“Forget it, we don't know how many of those things are in there. We'll deal with those things another day, we might even be able to use them as something other than trophies,” you grunt, stepping back into the trees and leaving the waterfall and the creature behind.

“Let's keep looking then,” Zo'rok shrugs, the four of you setting off once more, Raka snuffling at the undergrowth as you pick your way further south.

It's an hour later when you finally pick up on something else promising. Unlike the tiny footprints of the creature from before, these tracks are easy enough to spot, great furrows torn into the ground, the branches of trees and even some of the smaller trees themselves knocked aside by the passage of this hulking creature.

“Whatever it is, it's huge, bound to make for a good trophy,” Zo'rok grins, as Raka cocks his head, giving the air a puzzled sniff, turning to glance at you with a questioning look before returning to following the path of your new quarry.

“Provided we can carry a trophy from it back,” Dru'ak grunts, as you set off in pursuit.

The thing is far from subtle, which suggests it must be rare, because if there were too many of these things wandering around, you don't think there'd be much of a jungle left. Dru'ak pauses, frowning as he reaches into the undergrowth, pulling something loose from the roots of a tree with a crack of splintering wood, holding it up for both of you to see.

It looks like a thorn, something you are all too familiar with from the rare, hardy plantlife of the Great Waste. Of course, most of the plant life of the Great Waste doesn't grow thorns some two feet long, and doesn't tend to embed them a foot deep into solid surfaces.

“It's strong, very strong,” Dru'ak grunts, turning the thorn over in his hands, before stabbing it back into the trunk of the tree, the end easily piercing the tough bark.

“So what, we're tracking some walking plant?” Zo'rok asks, scratching his chin as he eyes the thorn.

“Won't make for good eating,” Dru'ak frowns.

You head a loud crack echoing through the jungle, wood splintering at your quarry's passage. Gesturing for your companions to stay low, you creep forward through the undergrowth, Raka stalking along by your side, the heavyset beast moving with remarkable grace when it suits him.

As you peer out through the undergrowth, at first you see nothing, just more of the endless greens, browns and vibrant shades of the jungle, then, part of the landscape begins to move, and you see it for what it is. Hunched over one of the trees, great thorned tendrils wrapped around it, stands a strange beast, near humanoid in shape, its body a mix of tough barky skin and tangled vine-like growths. It wrenches one of the branches of the tree loose, pressing its featureless face up against the stump, the vines spreading apart to reveal an orifice beneath, allowing the creature's small toothy mouth to suckle on the sap dripping free from the damaged tree.

It must be fifteen feet tall, and powerfully built, the thorn you found before most likely coming from one of the growths along the barky skin on the back of the creature's arms. Fortunately, distracted as it is by its meal, it seems oblivious to your presence, even as you creep closer. It seems you are free to make the first move.

“Zo'rok, take this and aim for the head, we'll hit it low,” you grunt, passing Zo'rok your spear as you pull the axe from your back.

You creep forward with Dru'ak and Raka, as Zo'rok hangs back, staking your spear into the ground as he readies his own to throw first. The creature remains oblivious throughout, intent on drinking the tree dry of sap, slurping greedily.

Looking to Dru'ak, the two of you exchange a nod, charging forward from the undergrowth, Zo'rok taking the signal to hurl the first of the spears at the strange plant-beast. The spear bites deep into the softer vine-like growths around the head, digging deep into the side of whatever passes for the thing's skull. The beast, however, seems rather unconcerned by its apparent injury, stopping its feeding to reach up with a tendril, the wooden haft of the spear splintering was it squeezes around it, leaving the tip lodged deep in the plant's flesh.

It starts to rise just as you reach it, swinging your axe for the back of the creature's heel, hacking through vine and bark alike, carving into the springy wood beneath. Dru'ak hits the other leg a moment later, his spear left with Zo'rok, his maul splintering the hardy creature's natural plating as Raka leaps onto the side of the shin, claws leaving great gouges as he scratches and bites.

The hulking beast stumbles, caught halfway to rising by the assault, limbs flailing as it struggles to right itself, tendrils lashing out to seize hold of nearby trees to prevent it from tumbling to the ground.

Still, despite the vicious strikes, the creature seems surprisingly healthy. You aren't entirely sure if it even feels pain, which means you'll need a more efficient way of killing it than simply hacking at it at random.

“Zo'rok, see if you can find a weak point on this damn thing,” you roar, as you lay into the back of the leg, hacking away at the tough wood as Dru'ak continues to hammer at the other in turn.

The thing gives a low groaning roar, the trees creaking as they struggle to hold the creature's weight, its precarious position making it hard for the beast to lash out at you easily, what few tendrils aren't focused on keeping it upright thrashing blindly. You see Dru'ak duck under a clumsy backhand, narrowly avoiding being impaled by thorns near as long as his forearm, but at last your efforts pay off, as with one last swing, you hear a resounding crack, the creature's leg splintering under your assault, sending it tumbling to the ground, cut off at the knee, a cascade of branches coming down with it as it tears down its makeshift supports.

With another groaning bellow, the thing rolls onto its back, you and Dru'ak forced to duck back behind cover as the tendrils thick as your chest lash out, ripping bark from the trees around it as it thrashes in frustration.

Looking at it like this though, you spot something interesting. While the rest of the beast looks to be vines woven around a solid wooden “body”, the creature's actual chest looks rather curious, with vine-like growths spilling out from around the edges of what can only be described as a wooden plate, fastened in place by the plant matter binding it tight. Perhaps behind that you might find the core of this creature. Of course, doing so will require getting very close to those thrashing tendrils, not to mention the creature's massive, thorned arms.

Lordy, maybe we can get it to tangle up its vines in nearby trees or something? Is that something we can try to do? Or just have the other two try to tangle and occupy the tendrils so we can rush in relatively safely?

Oh yeah don't get me wrong it is well drawn. The thinness of Ashuris just threw me off a bit.

She's been described as Voluptuous so the complaint is valid. The picture IS great though.

“Don't get too close,” you call to Dru'ak, as Zo'rok comes out to join you in the attack, staying out of reach of the majority of the tendrils as you begin cutting back the most rampant of the growths extruding off the creature.

It's tiresome work, though you manage to carve away several of the tendrils without more than some minor bruises as you twist to take the glancing blows on the heavier parts of your armor. Raka snarls and barks, bounding around and distracting the creature, ill-suited for the task you've set yourself to.

The creature quickly regains its senses however, another low, echoing groan issuing forth from it, and another, sharper voice half-audible beneath. The tendrils lash out, entwining themselves around the trees within reach, and at first to think the creature means to try and heave itself up to its feet again. As the trees around start to creak, however, you realize it's quite the opposite.

“Move,” you shout, the four of you scattering as the enraged plant creature's strength tears the surrounding plants from their roots, bringing them crashing down around you, and it. Ducking this way and that, the four of you scramble out beyond the range of the collapsing trees, looking back on the new clearing the creature has torn into the jungle canopy.

As the last screech of panicked birds fades away into the distance, the four of you look over the great mound of fallen trees now covering the creature.

“You... think it's dead?” Zo'rok frowns, not that he sounds all that convinced of the fact.

“I doubt it,” you grunt, starting to pick your way closer. Sure enough, you jump back just in time to avoid a tendril erupting from the pile of fallen lumber, more and more following as the thing drags itself free.

(cont)
>>
>>46417552
You notice soon enough what's changed, as it pulls itself back to its feet, its missing leg replaced with a newer knobbly growth of plant matter culled from the collapsed trees. The creature gives another groan of rage, reaching down to seize hold of a massive treebranch, hefting it high overhead.

“Ah shit,” Zo'rok groans.

This could be a problem.

“You three keep it busy,” you shout, your hunting party quickly spreading out around it, Dru'ak diving to the ground to avoid a great arcing swing by the creature's new makeshift weapon, the massive treebranch swinging scant inches over his head. Even tough as Dru'ak is, you doubt he'd be walking it off if that thing hit him, you'd better finish this quickly, before it has a chance to land a solid blow.

As the creature turns, trying to keep track of all three of your comrades as they harry it, you charge forward. You aren't entirely sure if the thing has a blind spot, since it seems to lack eyes, but from the difficulty it had striking you when you were attacking its legs from the back before, you suspect it's not so well suited to defending itself from that angle, especially with the way its newly regenerated limb trembles beneath it with every step.

Trying to stick to the back, you sprint in, dodging around the occasional blindly thrashing tendril as the creature slams its treebranch down just a split second after Raka has bounced to the side, snarling as he hops back out of reach. As it turns to follow him, you spring into action, bringing your axe up from the side, swinging it into the great mass of vines bursting forth from beneath the chestplate, the enchanted steel slicing through the tough, tangled mass.

The thing gives another groaning bellow, once again accompanied by that second, strange and sharp voice, as you carve deeper into it, using the flat of the axe to pry apart the chestplate from the rest of the creature.

(cont)
>>
>>46418326
It drops the branch, intent on trying to swat you away, its arm rising up high as it angles the brutal thorns upon the bark to crash down on your skull, but your friends spring into action, Zo'rok and Raka crashing into the creature's newly replaced leg, staggering it as Dru'ak brings his maul up to meet the downswing of the creature's arm, every muscle in the hulking orc's body straining as he matches power with the arm of the beast.

Wasting no time, you finish your work, ramming a gauntleted hand in to aid as you tear loose the plate, the whole creature starting to spasm as the thick slab of wood comes away from the body, until with a mighty roar, you rip it completely clear, leaving it dangling by some few remaining strands of vine.

You grin, turning to look into the gap you've created to the creature's heart, only to find someone staring back out at you.

A flurry of sharp, clipped speech echoes out from within, as the great mass of vines at the creature's core erupt outwards, winding all around you as you strain against them. You can see the thing within clearer now, female, lithe and slight. Were it not for the verdant green of her skin and the mass of leafy growth cascading down her back in place of hair, you might mistake her for an elf. Was she the thing controlling the beast?

She snaps another few harsh syllables of her strange tongue as she launches herself from the innards of the beast, a chunk of wood clutched in her hand twisting into a vicious thorn even as she lunges at you.

You strain to tear yourself free, but for every vine to snap another takes its place, it's all you can do to get an arm up in time to deflect the blow, the razor sharp thorn sinking deep into the meat of your arm rather than into your throat.

You give a growl of pain as the green elf-thing wrenches the thorn loose, barely kept at arms length as she rains down frenzied stabs on you, slicing skin and carving flesh, splashing you with your own blood as she snarls in her sharp, clipped tongue. Thankfully, your breastplate keeps the thorn from burying itself anywhere two vital, while your raised arm weathers the blows meant for your face. Still, at this rate, the arm is going to give, and then all it will take is one good stab to the eye, and you'll be done.

>>
You've no desire to shame yourself by having to ask for help with the slight green-skinned female, nor do you have any desire for the far greater shame of being killed by said female. With a roar of effort, you tear your other arm free, grabbing hold of the female and pulling her loose of the innards of the gargantuan shell, both of you tumbling free to the ground, where without the added frustration of the vines around you, you easily overpower her, throwing the thorn far out of reach.

Without her to control it, the rest of the larger plant-thing gives one last groan, before it collapses into a tangled heap of inanimate plant matter with a cacophonous crash, the green elf-thing kicking and cursing in her strange tongue as you pin her to the ground.

“Where'd you find that?” Zo'rok asks curiously, as him and Dru'ak circle around the crumbling remains of the plant-beast to look upon your new captive.

“Inside it, I think she was controlling it somehow,” you reply, as she continues to struggle in vain.

Raka pads forward, giving her a curious sniff, cocking his head as he paces around, snorting, stump of a tail wagging. Perhaps she's fey, it would make sense, and Raka does seem to be watching her with something akin to familiarity.

“Not exactly the trophy I had in mind,” Dru'ak grunts.

“Hah, yeah. Shame more things we hunt don't spill females when you crack 'em open,” Zo'rok cackles.

The fey female finally stops her struggling after a few minutes, finally realizing it's futile and settling for glaring up at you in silence as you speak with your friends.

“So what now, Ur? We heading back? Want to take anything else?” Dru'ak asks.

>Harvest the plant-beast's thorns, they were sturdy enough to make good weapons
