Last Time, on Song of Swords:
Band of Bastards released weapons and wound tables
Ruvia
Silly Western art
Missing magic rules

Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fast and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings.

Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

Here's a .rar archive with the newest version of the rules as well as all related current working documents. At this time the latest version is v1.9.9:

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
The room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

The Legend is unconscious.

So, Pauldrons. Stabbing under them was common, and despite what SoS' rules imply, upper arm armor was still common under because of this. So they should, really, have a Weak Point on the arm there, right? Since, well, SoS doesn't have armpits, only shoulders.

>>46408840
Probably something for coup de grace or joint thrust, at the least. It would be silly to have an armpit hit location, so just adding the joint thrust weakness would be an easy fix.

Or maybe add a note on the armor saying joint thrusting damages the side, not the shoulder.

You're correct. But he does describe it as sort of resembling an axe. Chainsaw is the wrong word, but big goofy circular saw axe doesn't sound as cool.

Seriously though. The Dark Watchers? The constant looming dread of the eclipse? The power that powers sorcerer sounds an awful lot like the Earth-Current. What happens when Genosus goes away and doesn't come back?

Nothing, because Zoph Escher has already built a giant laser cannon to fuck Shub-Niggurath with.

That's a legitimate disconnect though. Love doesn't seem to have any power or gravity whatsoever in Tattered Realms. The only case I can think of is Eskarne's thirst for revenge over her dead husband, which has driven her to kill countless innocent people.

Eskarne is a bad guy, make no mistake. She's a serial killer. I'm interested in what her inspiration is, exactly.

Hay SoS, I'm gonna do a fun thing on Friday with gladiators to teach people the game, help myself revise and get them to try different styles.

Do you have any ideas for cool colosseum stuff? Are there any "must use" gladiator types? How would to stat a net?
>>
>>46418112
I will say that most gladiator armor sets DO NOT WORK AT ALL if the TZM and Stance rules are not in play.

Romans got up to some crazy shit in the coliseum. Drive rare species to extinction by gladiator. Mock up large infantry battles. Xtreme chariot races. Flood the interior and do ship battles.
>>
>>46418112
One thing to consider is that gladiators were supposed to toy with each other. Don't overinvest and tell players not to do so. Audience wants a long bloody show.
>>
>>46418112
>>46418200
>>46418382
Also, Gladiators are not supposed to kill each other. However, on the Arena (which means "on the sand" in Roman latin) accidents happen.

>>46418476
I remember suggesting a rule to modulate the STR of a strike you made ages ago, was that ever officially implemented?

I'll probably end up using it either way, it fits the theme.
>>
>>46418658
is that modulation you speak of supposed to represent the strength put into the attack? The CP investiture can also do that, but I don't think that it'll be fun to the players. Holding back like that.
>>
>>46418720
As in you would say "Okay I'm only putting 3 STR into this attack" before rolling the dice so that really good rolls could still lead to accidents.
>>
>>46418798
Why not? Its okay rule if you want to control the deadliness of combat.

Alright frog, you've got initiative. We start at Extended reach, since that's the reach of your glaive. You are using your glaive, right?

In BoB, or Builder, there are no range costs. Instead, when you have the reach advantage, you get +2 CP at the refresh. So your CP is:

7 attributes + 10 proficiency - 1 armor CP penalty + 2 range = 18 CP

My CP is:

8 attributes + 7 proficiency - 3 armor CP penalty = 12 CP

So bring it on. Twelve is all I need to return Alsace-Lorraine to its rightful owners.

>>46422899
You're swinging a glaive at my fully armored belly? I take back what I said earlier, you're as stupid as you look. I'll extend you a little mercy. I'll do an 8d Parry. Yeah, a Parry, not a Block. They'll both use a DTN of 6.

By the way, with my shield, I'm Favoring my Left Arm, my Right Arm, and my Head. Because those areas are Favored, you can't specifically choose to attack them. So stay away from my armpits!

Excellent. Now, I have a few options.

I could Shield Bash, against which your only defense is a Dodge, increasing my chances of retaining initiative. But this lets you do underhanded French tactics like Wrap to attack my unarmored head. Oh, and my Sword & Shield proficiency's Emphasis means that this will be done at Advantage. That means -1 TN.

I could Shield Push. This is Restraining, meaning if it succeeds, any attack you do in response is wasted. None of that sneaky attack business from Song of Swords, it'll be totally negated. And just like a Shield Bash, your only defensive option is a Dodge. I'll also have Advantage thanks to my Sword & Shield proficiency.

I could Wind. You're probably used to the eternally half-completed Hilt Push system in SoS. Well, here, this is how Wind works. Jake Norwood himself said this system of theirs was brilliant.

Since I only have a few dice remaining, I'll do a Shield Push at you with 4 dice.
Remember, there are no range costs. If a Shield Bash/Push succeeds, we'll move to my preferred weapon reach of Long.

You've got 7 successes, on your 10 dice.

But guess what? Dodge doesn't give you initiative unless you pay 2 CP afterwards. And you used all of yours!

We're going to begin Round 2 (or "Phrase" 2, as they call it in Builder) with me having initiative. (Also their word for Action is Tempo.)

Now we are at Long, my range. I get the +2 CP range bonus. Now we're more evenly matched: I have 14 CP, you have 16 CP, and I have initiative.

So this is where we get to BoB's mechanic, something they have that SoS doesn't, at least not formally. The Positioning roll is what you use to do any of the fun narrative things you'd like to do, as well as draw a new weapon or rise from prone. You spend dice from your CP after the Refresh but before Tempo 1 to do these. If anyone decides to do a Positioning roll, their enemy gets to allocate dice to try and stop them. RAW it doesn't look that way but it's been confirmed on their forums that that's how it's meant to be.

For example, if the Unknown Frenchman decides to stand up and spend 3 dice to do so, I can spend some dice to try and stop him. He has to roll MORE successes than me, or else he stays prone.

What will you do, peasant? Stay in the dirt where you belong, or waste dice trying to rise above your station?

4 Strength + 1p longsword + 2 MoS - 3 Stamina - 3 AV mail

Your mail is Metal, which converts my attack into bludgeoning.

That's a level 1 bludgeoning wound. Level 1 wounds in BoB are mostly cosmetic, but they do inflict stun.
Cutting and Bludgeoning wounds inflict 2 stun per level. Piercing inflict 1 stun per level. So, this blow inflicts 2 stun, and nothing else.

Knockout is a lot like SoS. We roll our Knockdown pool (Strength + Agility) and need at least 3 successes in this case.

I have 4 Strength and 4 Agility, so my KD pool is 8 dice.
If I make this check, we'll be in the next Round, and the Frenchman will have initiative again. But worse than that, my Base TN will rise from 6 to 8! This begins the death spiral.

The roll is passed. There's one last thing though, contributing to the death spiral. I've suffered more Impact than I have dice in my pool. In Builder, when you suffer overshock, you lose those dice from your next Refresh. I've suffered 6 dice of overshock, so not only has my Base TN risen to 8, but I also have only 6 CP for the entire Round.

I do have one possible saving grace, and that's that shields do not use your Base TN to Block with. Instead, they used a Fixed TN, which is usually 6. No matter how wounded I get, I can always Block at TN 6.
Also at a Fixed TN is the Disengage maneuver, their version of Flee. Like SoS and Riddle and Bovine this is done at TN 5.

Just about everything else I do is now at a Base TN of 8. So, I'm facing an enemy with three times my CP and a 2-TN advantage.

By the way, the Frenchman used a maneuver called Wrap. That's a special kind of Swing, like a Power Swing in SoS, that lets you attack a normally unreachable area. So, just because I Favored my Head with my shield doesn't mean it can't be struck. It's just going to cost a bit to do it.
Only Swings can do this, which means Favoring is especially useful against thrusting weapons like Spears or Rapiers, things you don't expect cuts with.

ROUND 5
18 CP vs 6 CP, Extended Range
The Frenchman has initiative!

I'm liking what I see of BoB, if you ever see this. I remain skeptical of some choices, like fixed TNs, and still generally prefer SoS, but it's shaping up very well. Good luck to you, and I'll probably be supporting both whenever they are inevitably released.

Also, I just want to say that you guys are very wrong about your assessment of the SoS setting, as you have made the foolish mistake of not following two years of intermittent lore tidbits dropped by an alcoholic on a Chinese Cartoon image board. Instead, you foolishly looked only at the game's book, which is legitimately the worst representation of how the setting actually plays out currently available. How dare you.

Jimmy, when the hell are you going to actually compile this stuff so that people don't just see a horde of elves in the rulebook and run away? I get it's a bare bones mechanical book, but the few snippets in the book paint a terribly boring picture. Until my players started reading the wiki, they thought the majority of the setting was dry, flavorless generic fantasy? Where's the stuff to fire the imagination for people picking up the game? The impenetrable Tenja, the mysteries of Algenburg, the angry hordes of Dace, the ancient decadence of Karthack and Helion? Where's the fun stuff in the lore?
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh5LY4Mz15o

Jimmy, how are mercenaries employed throughout Vosca, and are there any areas currently in conflict? Further, Dace are currently "annexing" the Infinite Steppe for arable land to make rice farms, but do they have any further plans and how do they plan to enforce their newly found borders? And do other states recognize this?

>Just the detailed approach to combat or is it a work derived from SoS?
They both take inspiration from TRoS, their common ancestor. Band of Bastards focuses on quick gritty combat in mundane world. One of the authors checks SoS and OSR threads occasionally.
>>46429380

It's a completely separate thing from SoS with no direct connection between the two. However, it's also inspired by Riddle of Steel just like SoS and BoTits, so it's pretty interesting what approach a different group of devs take to it when starting from the same place.

SoS and BoB, much like BotIT were all "successors" to the game The Riddle of Steel, with the intent of fulfilling Jake Norwood's vision for roleplaying, much as Big Boss, Major Zero and Skullface all saw themselves as The Boss's successors.

So all of the games share a common ancestor, but they are starkly divergent in terms of design philosophy and theme.
Blade is more about Conanesque fantasy.
Swords is more about high fantasy "done right."
Bastards is more about fechty low fantasy done right.

Thusfar only Blade has actually launched, with a degree of success. Swords is probably the most popular overall, simply because the designers are 4channers and /tg/ is an infinite hub of autism. Also because SoS invented the Fecht.. Bastards is sort of an unknown factor, we don't know what their shtick is yet.

They renamed themselves Band of Bastards; we've nicknamed them Builder. They're a much simpler system than us and Bovine. Rather than have all our qualms and worried about how to stat each weapon in the game, Builder decided to let you build your own weapons based on a default statline and a bunch of modifiers. The idea was intriguing and we've been waiting for them to release their rule set ever since.

For their part, they looked at us one time two years ago and said "wow there's a lot of elves here. No thanks." They've also said something along the lines of "you've got to respect that these people looked at Riddle of Steel and said 'this needs to be MORE' complicated.'"

The four Riddle successors are
- Blade of the Iron Throne
- Burning Wheel
- Band of Bastards
- Song of Swords

BoB is particularly influenced by Burning Wheel, adopting their strange notation Obstacle, or Ob, for the mechanic we know as a Difficulty Class or Required Successes.

BoB credits Ian Plumb with bringing the development group together. Ian Plumb was the man responsible for giving Jimmy the name "Laser Whales", from which we have Ballad of the Laser Whales.

Are all of these Riddle of Steel kind of games classless?
I know SoS is Or I think to know it is but what about the others?

>>46432817
>- Burning Wheel
Didn't even know that Burning Wheel and SoS are in the same "family" of RPGs damn.

Guess I learned quite a bit today.

Again, thank you all, that has been very helpfull
>>
>>46432859
They are all classless partly by choice, partly by legacy. TRoS was based on narrative character progression and generation. It fits semirealistic gritty campaigns better than abstract leveling in rigid classes.
>>
>>46432859
The intro to Burning Wheel Gold is written by Jake Norwood. In it he gushed about how much he loves Burning Wheel.

Branching out from Song of Swords, you have Ballad of the Laser Whales.
Branching out from Bovine you have Realms of the Perisphere.

Yes, they're all class-less systems.

Something unique to Song of Swords is John Galt. He's ours alone.

Helion dominates the inner sea because of laser-shooting magic ships, but Old Radovan also has a controlling share, and even supports their interests.

>Old Radovan
>One of the oldest Zells period, and he looks his age due to frequent trips to the land. Radovan is the current King of the Tattered Sea, the only true Zellish Nation. He rules from his "Twirling Court," a massive Zellislava that sits immobile over a permanent whirlpool in the Tattered Isles, ever-spinning, and invincible to assault. Nobody is quite certain which of The Seven Radovan follows, as he hasn't mentioned it, and skillfully evades the question whenever it is posed. This has allowed him to gather a multi-tribal group that has the power to control The Tatters, and thus all trade on the interior coast of Vosca.
>>
>>46440106
It's a narrowing strait near the Tatters and Helion. There should be something of note.
>>
>>46440116
>laser-shooting magic ships
Are those flying ships or semimodern ironclads with lasers? How would they fare against huge Zellislava?
>>
>>46440186
There's probably some zell faggotry that goes down, but zells do their shit all over anyway.
>>
>>46440024
>doesn't mention the void at the bottom of the sea

>>46440235
Men-O-War with giant painted prows that shoot lasers out of the eyes, much as the actual elves do.
They're considered the strongest single navy in the setting, but zells could get an edge one way or another. The eyes lasers would wreck any ship they could fire on, though I imagine large enough zellislava (and there are few) could soak several hits and inflict good damage back on the enemy fleet.

Old Radovan's city-ship could probably contest an entire navy, since its made of about a dozen galleon equivalent vessels united with zell magic (and it is said to be "invincible to assault").
>>
>>46440336
How do elves operate men-o-war if they live on the flying island? Where are their harbors and ports? Do they drop supplies from big flying rock?
>>
>>46440557
There's ways to get up and down Anon, they're not trapped up there.
>>
>>46440557
There's a big island underneath the floating one where all the slaves live, and where presumably they have their ports.
>>
>>46440336
>Men-O-War
Damn, I always pictured them more as classical Galleys.
>>
>>46440557
>The city itself is clearly artificial. It stands on a perfectly chiseled plateau close to a hundred feet above the sea, upon which sits the mighty and eternal city of the elves. Much of it physically floats above the plateau itself, due to the enormous amount of magic funneled into the place, which is essentially the "heart" of the magical leylines that flow through the world.

>Humans and other visitors content themselves with the massive docks that fill the sea around the city, but once upon a time (as evidenced by the remnants found in the Tattered Sea,) the city of Helion may well have encompassed the entire ocean, floating above the water like some terrible city of the gods.

...

>Helion doesn't just have a navy, Helion has THE navy. No other state in the world can match them in sheer size and power, not even the massive Zellish fleets of Rade Sark or Old Radovan. In fact, it is well known that Radovan is in bed (literally) with the Orredin, and will support them even over other Zells.

>The Helian navy is huge, and their vessels are of exquisite quality. The Orredin themselves tend to be great fans of sailing, and boat races are considered a very noble and masculine pastime. As a result, they often spend colossal amounts of money independently to design faster, better, more maneuverable and more sturdy ships for their own use. This investment has bled into their military. Helian vessels are centuries more advanced than their closest competitors, and can fly through the water like birds through the air, brave the stormiest waters of the Tattered Sea, and carry powerful weapons, many of them Sorcerous in nature.
>>
>>46440699
>>46440557
>In the lowest reaches below the city live only slaves, in a district known to locals as the Dark. It is probably the single worst place to actually live in Vosca. Even Dace has certain things recommending it, but the place is a literal mountain of shit and detritus with a constant low-level rain of more pouring down on it.

>This area does have a purpose, however, and the slaves who live there do as well. The logistics of keeping the population of Helion itself supplied with water and food require a massive amount of manpower. Huge systems of pipes, water-holding platforms and pumps allow massive teams of slaves to move the water high up enough that magically-powered systems topside can draw it the rest of the way. Food isn't generally grown on Helion itself (anymore) and so must be shipped in and transported up to a high enough place that be moved onto the island by similar means as the water.

>The island itself is also the de-facto port of the floating city, since boats can't exactly get up there, so there's a lot of trade, and free men do live there, eking a living off of the trade industry. It isn't a very popular location, but traders who want access to Orredin goods and Orredin gold have no other choice but to stop there.

Yeah, overall the naval designs in Vosca are generally pre-napoleonic for the most part. Even the Zells mostly tool around in Cog-equivalents and the occasional Carrack.

Where do the Orredin even get their money? They can't be just living on the savings from when they were relevant, can they?
>>
>>46440862

>Helian vessels are centuries more advanced than their closest competitors

>>46441019
Trade and politics.
>>
>>46441043
But they have nothing much to trade and nobody wants to politic with them.
>>
>>46441019
Why not? Money breeds more money. Even without any resources of their own, they've got easily enough capital to maintain or even increase their overall wealth through trade and the like. It probably also helps that they're in an incredibly central location functioning as a trade hub, and are also virtually impossible to invade.
>>
>>46441019
They do sort of have a commanding position on what must be an enormous trade route through the central sea.
>>
>>46441125
>nothing much to trade
What part of "dominates the inner sea" doesn't scream merchant republic?

>no one wants to politic
Is this a joke? They're frequently described as having fingers in everyone's pie, and they still hold on to to a certain reputation and respect. The setting's varangian guard are all humans who are trying to prove their worth through combat to get that elf pussy.

Yes, basically. But that doesn't prevent the optimal breeding situation from being "each elf male gets a harem of humans, as many as he can fuck" and just making the more elf-blooded humans the preferred choices.
>>
>>46441901
It's been mentioned that most interracial pairings aside from Zells favor the mother's phenotype, so Ohanedin (m) plus Burdinadin (f) result in Burdinadin offspring.

Maybe they have to have a female Orredin as the mother to even have a shot at it working. Then again, women are also allowed in the Purple Guard (I think Gizka was actually a candidate at one time) so they probably have amazon harems as well.

I should like the BoB approach more, since I usually hate high fantasy. If the goal of the Tattered Realms is doing high fantasy right, they are doing something correctly.

Are there other settings, in games or novels, that have the similar blending of high fantasy and mysticism with very humanistic politics and conflicts and historical aesthetics?

I recommend the books by the first author, William King. By the time I was getting used to the second author of the series, Nathan Long, they switched him out and the series just seemed to start going downhill from there.

One of the newer authors also killed off most of the fan favorite returning characters. If remember right.

The first book, Trollslayer, is a collection of short stories about the two that were written by King beforehe was commissioned to write full novels about them. Each short story can be used as a gaming session or two so I would recommend reading them just for that.

I'm reading this Night Land thing because of what you guys said about.

Really fascinating stuff. Did people really used to capitalize nouns at random like this, or is there some hard ruling to it that I fail to understand? Like, if they're referring to something in particular, does that make it a proper noun?

Great read though. It's amazing that this book was written a hundred years ago.
>>
>>46452650
IIRC english used to capitalise any and all nouns until fairly recently, like most other european languages still do today. I'm guessing that particular book ended up in the transitory period between then and now.
