>Semi-automatic
Why?
>>
>>46377607

>>46377622
Because why would you not want a semi-automatic? There's really not much reason, aside from maybe some reliability and extreme range accuracy, to not make something semi automatic.
>>
>>46377622
RoF is more important in anti-material rifles then the accuracy gained by being a bolt action.
>>
>>46377622
The question is: Why not full-auto?
>>
>>46377622
Because the actual accuracy difference between a bolt-action and a well-made semi-automatic action is effectively non-existent. And if you can increase potential rate of fire and ease of use (since you don't need to change your stance or break your sight picture to cycle the action) at minimal loss of accuracy, then why the hell wouldn't you?

>>46379116
Bro this gun is using the same action as an already-existing anti-materiel rifle, they're just using modified furniture and receivers so that it can be more effectively fired standing up or crouching.

Does the older more traditional rifle-shaped barret tweak your autism as well, or is it just when the gun is designed to be held like an RPG?

And, again, even if you ignore the rate of fire: the accuracy difference is minimal, and in a semi-auto configuration you don't need to completely break your sight picture and move the weapon about to cycle it. Would you really hate to be the guy who missed his first shot, desperately need to take a second because you've been seen, and don't have time to take it because some autismo made it bolt-action when that wasn't necessary?

Your logic is backwards here. The targets of an anti-material rifle are large so there is less of a need for precision and you want a higher rate of fire to cause more damage - increasing repair time - and increase probability of hit on a vital subsystem.

M82A2 guy here. The rifle was actually designed for shooting down helicopters. The main problem with it, was that helicopters are actually hard to hit, even with an accurate rifle. To down a helicopter you would actually need a higher rate of fire. So yeah. Still a lovely gun though.

No, early rifling was intended to prevent fouling by giving the soot and gunk somewhere else to go besides in the way of the projectile. It didn't work and usually had the opposite effect, but that's why you see it on firearms from before conical bullets.

Shotguns don't work in real life the way they do in video games. Even with a sawed off barrel the pellets wouldn't spread enough to hit 4 targets at once unless you were standing quite a ways back, and at that point it loses a whole lot of its stopping power.
>>
>>46377777
>>46377736

Being bolt action or semi automatic doesn't have anything to do with stopping power. That depends mostly on the cartridge. Firing pin strikes the primer, primer ignites the gun powder inside the case, the powder explodes and pushes the bullet out of the case and down the barrel. What the firing pin is attached to doesn't make a difference in terms of power.

It's a Szecsei Double Bolt, it has a double-stacked four-round magazine with each stack feeding into an independent breech and barrel that are worked by a twin-bolt system. This way you only need to pull back the bolt after every two shots, so with two bullets already in the breech, you can fire six times while only working the bolt thrice. Useful if you like double-tapping.

>>
>>46386861
U.S. Coast Guard uses high caliber rifles to disable the motors of small watercraft trying to make it to U.S. shores illegally. Typically the shooter is in a helicopter. Might be what this rifle was built for.
>>
>>46386980

But the shooter shoots from a prone position in the helicopter in those scenarios.
>>
>>46386752
It lets a shooter move and shoot with a .50 cal from a standing or crouching position. And with some practice, prone shouldn't be a problem either. It would be just like shooting an RPG, but with little care for backblast.

Honestly, less "why?" and more "why not?"

Its really not hard if you have a basic understanding of chemistry, some pliers, a couple clean glasses, and can keep a workspace halfway tidy. Most of the fun stuff you can handload with is pre-made in one form or another. All you need to do is mix it together and shove it in a shell. Albeit stuff like ghetto dragon-breath rounds takes a little bit of work to get right - start small and work your way up with the chemical amounts till you're happy.

I paid $750 for that 1911. The one in .50ae was twice that price, plus when you get to that caliber you're paying $2-3 per bullet. .45acp isn't as cheap as .22 or 9mm but I just don't have the cash to throw into regularly shooting anything in .50 cal.

I'm the same guy in both posts.

Anything new on the horizon? Well, I want to unfuck the fuckup of the AK build, which is literally the only thing I have that needs....a more practiced hand than I have. It was probably a lot of factors that lead to the KB of the test fire, so figuring that out won't be hard. But I still need to drill the new receiver, find a press for the barrel, etc. Other than that it's just parts to unfuck one or two other guns I have that need tweaks, mainly aesthetics. I might just buy a goddamn AK, pop the rivets, install a new 80% receiver, and call it a day.

And honestly, I had an interest in /tg/ shit for a loooong time. At one point I tried my hand at building/painting a few squads of ultramarines, which turned out badly in the paint department. Nobody wanted to play a game based on dice, so I was screwed there. And THEN, my parents didn't like the idea of magic in an imaginary setting, so after my first ever game of 3e I was effectively banned from it. Guns just became my hobby because it was safer for my fragile little Christian mother's mind. Or something.

More guns. The Vintorez is pictured. God...what a great gun it would be.

I love the shit out of that wood stock.
I'm mostly into handguns, the only rifles I own are a Ruger 10/22 my dad got me when I was 5 and that nugget I mentioned earlier. I'm looking to get an AR15 soon. I'd like to build one from scratch to pick out all my parts and make it how I like but it seems a little daunting, plus I hear the tools are really fuckin spendy as well. I've become a pretty good shot with my nugget and that's got me interested in long range shooting and I'd like my AR tailored to that specific need.
Also someday I'm gonna make something like pic related...
I got into the miniatures hobby specifically for painting. I own almost $1,000 in 40k minis alone and I've never played a single game. I've got a few hundred into Warmachine minis also and I've played a few games, but don't really have many people to play with. A few FLGSs near me with lots of players but nobody's ever available when I am, and the rest of the time it's a bunch of kids playing MTG.

Won't lie, that is a sexy bitch. I have a...well, it isn't really a brand NAME 1911, but if you paint as well as I think you should be able to, I'd commission a paint job from you for it. Like pic related, but I have other ideas for the scheme.

If you want the AR, go piecemeal for the lower receiver. The parts are so easy to install you can literally do it with a long screwdriver and a pair of needlenose pliers. For the upper....get the upper in one main piece that comes mostly as you want it. If you don't want to spend a shitload on specialized tools that is. I built mine for ~500. Oddly enough, I find myself more drawn to long guns.

I'll be around if you have more questions.

>>46388730
It's called a vierling. Vier being the German word for four. No, it doesn't fire all at once, and iirc, it has a selector that allows you to fire a specific chamber. As for WHY it does that....well, because if you want one gun that does 3 calibers then here you go.

Actually, in a srmiatomatic part of the energy is used to cycle the weapon, which means that this energy is not available to the bullet anymore.
The amount needed is minimal at best, but it is still correct that it reduces the energy.

Do you think that this rifle would take out a tank, or even an APC? No. It was built to shoot at lightly/unarmored vehicles/entrenched positions and not cost as much/ give away the shooters position like a missile does.
90% of a vehicle are not crucial parts to it's actual function, you have to hit the engine with quite the power, or take out the crew to disable a vehicle.

Considering how many gun spergs we have here:

What are the benefits/downsides of a Carbine over a Rifle? Portability/less restrictive when moving?

I'm pondering weapons (Mechanically there is no difference in the game but the character is likely a bit of a gun sperg to it would be nice to have stuff to sperg about.) for a game where the weapons tech is roughly late 1800/early 1900s.

The character in question is an elven ranger who likes to stay mobile and can't be sure to get a heap of distance on his enemies (That and general portability is keeping me away from something fluffwise more in the area of a marksman rifle)
>>
>>46389045

Carbines are just shorter versions of rifles, usually under 20 inches. They were made for soldiers who needed to carry them around in smaller spaces (vehicle operators) and who wouldn't get as much use out of a longer gun because they didn't see as much long range combat.

So yeah I'd say portability and handling in exchange for I guess accuracy. If you're in a setting where bayonets are actually relevant you could also tie that in, as a bayoneted rifle would have a decent advantage over a bayoneted carbine.

Me neither. I googled the difference between carbines and rifles and just told you what I got, so take all of this with that in mind. The definition of what makes a "carbine" apparently changed depending on the manufacturer, but it's generally come to be accepted as any "rifle" under 20 inches long.

I'd say it depends on the technological level of your setting. If you're using old single-shot muskets and shit, the extra ~2 feet on a full length rifle can mean the difference between landing an accurate shot at 100m, and an accurate shot at 300m.

If your scout is typically engaging guys at close-medium range a carbine will probably be just fine. If they're using modern or futuristic weaponry I don't think it would matter at all unless you're talking about extreme ranges of over 700m or something.

>...Yeah, if you frenchies could shoot a german and get a better gun, that'd be great.
I will admit, it did have a good psychological effect.
>>
>>46389045
Carbines were originally developed for cavalry troops. Those cavalry troops were called carabiniers.
When you are riding a horse and you gotta muzzle load, you don't want a long barrel. Mainly because tjis means that you have to lower the stock of your rifle far too low to reach the muzzle effectively, which allows and lowly infantry to grab it and disarm/dismount you, which would be a deathsentence in most cases.

Carbines are still in use, mainly because a shortet barrel means better manouverability in tight spaces such as vehicles, and buildings, but also because you don't have to worry as much about your barrel bumping into shit and bending.

Nah. Unless its in thick brush you'd just give them normal shit. Its mostly for people that will perpetually be in tight area's. Example: the m1 rifle was standard issue but prior to WWII people were asking left and right for a smaller more convenient rifle for the likes of tank operators, radio crew, mortar crews, engineers, headquarter troops, signal crews and more since they were constantly in places indoorish or inside tight compact spaces like planes, tanks, or cars and having a long rifle was becoming an issue since it was heavy and caught on shit like machinery, chairs, brush, and people and while having sidearms like a m1911 or m1917 was great thats still underpowered or inaccurate compared to rifles and rifle calibers and carrying thompsons was inaccurate and damn heavy. This along with germans paraglide paratroop dropping into shit behind lines like support units and communication line area that would have no prior warning but needed an easy to carry always ready rifle made demand soar for the likes of a smaller but still rifle caliber snd usage gun. So they made a minime m1 and called it the m1 carbine even though it used entirely different parts and ammunition. they even made more variants like the m1a1 carbine that came with a metal folding stock for even more versatility though it was less enthusiastically received since you had to actually fold the stock out compared to the previous m1 carbine that came with a full wood stock ready to go.
Long windedness aside the accuracy from rifle to carbine, at least in this example, wasn't to different though there was less power behind each round so dropoff was an issue.

Tl:Dr for people constantly in tight spaces like indoor, on base, in the woods, and people far off the frontlines that still somehow get attacked cause germans are crafty fucks.

Thanks a lot for all this info.

So I'm hearing 'Dwarves would lean towards carbines' (They live perpetually in confined spaces) if I make some extrapolations based on fantasy races. Dropoff isn't as much of an issue for them but maneuverability would be.

Thanks a lot.

Techwise it's about 1890s to 1910s...ish. Like most fantasy settings, kinda fuzzy.

After this all, I'm looking at having my character go with Totally Not A Winchester Model 1895 (I googled guns from that time)

...mostly because Lever Action Rifles have always looked very cool to me but you rarely see them in too many systems that have guns. They always seem to jump from Musket to WWII.

No. Shorter barrels are usually more mechanically accurate, which is also a reason why precision rifles cost an arseload. What you lose in the trade is velocity.

Mind you its a bit bigger than that aince theres about 30 other studies done by various people using entirely different methods that same roughly the same thing which is an issue since its similar to doing 1-2, 2+3, and 4+1 and getting 3 everytime, especially when the actual physicsl results are repeatable. Standing theory is its down to the variant shooters used though some used several to get their results.

This, however is a pistol.

Unless of course the upper receiver was part of a rifle before it was part of a pistol because that would make it always a rifle according to the BATFE, but it if it's a pistol it can be converted into a rifle and back to a pistol legally.

Basically the law isn't written to account for AR-15s so they AR-15 pistols are in a strange place legally.

What the hell is that thing? Also, apparently it doesn't seem to shoot anything. Some movie prop?
>>
>>46392263
it appears to be an underslung grenade launcher converted into a gun
>>
>>46392233
The "law" from the atf means shit, the putting a foregrip on a pistol makes it a abr/aow has been tossed out of court a couple times because they make shit up as they go.
>>
>>46392263
It's clearly mostly C96 with a M4 stock stuck on the front.

No fucking idea what the shit on the bottom of the magazine is though, nor what the front pistol grip came from.
>>
>>46392331
The law specifies vertical grips, a 45 degree grip is exempt.

Not that the ATF wouldn't try to claim it's an AOW, it just wouldn't stand up in court even more than if it had a vertical grip.
>>
>>46392344
Actually it's full auto M712 (I seriously it's based on toy gun because that butchery is just horrible) without any barrel to shoot anything, but I was more interested to know why anyone would do something like that.
>>
>>46392383
No as in the atf took people to court for putting a normal vertical grip on a pistol and the judge/jury said no thats not a SBR/AOW its still a pistol, and bubba got of free.
>>
>>46392263
Of course its a fucking prop. Thats literally an adjustable stock glued to the front of a mauser (please be repro or bbshit pleasepleaseplase)
>>
>>46392422
You know I assumed it was a c96 at a glance because that would have made more sense with no magazine.

>[s]scientist[/s]

You mean Engineer.

Nah engineers are like sorcerers.
They wish they were scientists and are inferior in everyway that matters.

I know it's silly and over-the-top, I realize that its a flawed weapon concept.

but I'm still a sucker for it.
>>
>>46392233
Hey now! It also instantly becomes an illegal short barrel rifle if you touch the 'sig arm brace' to your shoulder.

some of these designs belong in RPG's.

Canada has commit about 3 times more warcrimes compared to nazi's or the japs.
>>
>>46399237
Just because of their deployment of syrup based weaponry.
>>
>>46399398
Nah. They literally didn't get a memo and went crazy. Not even joking.
Fun fact: hitler actually based his POW camps on canadian POW camps but thought it was too cruel so he "improved" his with luxuries like toilets, beds, shelter, walls for said shelter, food, water, air.

What the fuck are you even talking about? I implied that Germany has committed war crimes. I didn't say shit about Canada.
>>
>>46400725
He's compairing the interment camps for the asians in ww2 to the german ones. I don't know where he is pulling the other warcrimes from, his ass most likely.
>>
>>46400321

Seems more Power Rangers to me

>>46400810

I'm just sayin, why did he reply to my post for that? If he just wanted to post a "fun fact" then whatever, but using "germans committed war crimes" as a jumping off platform for "hurr u dont no bout dem canucks" is pretty weak.
>>
>>46391948

I see it. It's ugly as fuck.
>>
>>46400902
The germans have Canada beaten in both quanity and quality of war crimes.
>>
>>46400990

Maybe they have, maybe they haven't. I'm not talking about Canada at all. All I'm saying is that Germans have committed war crimes.
>>
>>46401046
Thats not what germany and poland are saying. And if anybody would know its them.
