My Half-Giant Barbarian has a massive ass family, and a wife he loves immensely, all of them are NPCs that RP with the party during downtime. They all live in a giant fuck off longhouse which doubles as the party base. There was kind of an unspoken agreement that the longhouse is sacred, and the DM isn't the kind of guy that will uproot everything we love to make cheap drama. It's a little weird, but after you get a feel for the actual NPC and get attached to them, thinking of them as an actual character as opposed to a quest giving or information giving robot, you can get into it fairly easily. Lot of stories have arisen from it though.
