It's practical, I only wear one knee pad when I go out to paintball and nerf wars since I always hold my gun one way (you know, main hand on the trigger). I imagine with melee weapon its the same thing so you always have the same shoulder facing the enemy.

That's a big one. Unless your character is a red headed blind midget with hemophilia who falls out of bed every morning, he's a mary sue.

Playing as any kind of magic user. Magic only exists as a masturbatory wish-fulfilment tool and every game would be better with it removed.

I once played a drow in a one-shot who was a low-born arrow fodder male. He was a soldier who saw an opening to the surface world, and decided he'd rather risk trying to make a life up there than stay in the Underdark and get killed as a soldier or spider sacrifice. He worked with the party as a mercenary. At one point in the game, the GM had a hag take the shape of a Drow priestess. I did what any Drow would do: immediately dropped to a knee and begged forgiveness. I got wailed on by the hag, but shit was fun.

Did I do good, anon?

Good point. I really meant more of the "natural streaked hair" a lot of mary sue characters have as opposed to actual streaks from natural causes like aging or injury. Shit like Yugi in Yugioh having literally four different kinds of color in his hair, including metallic gold, and they're all apparently natural. That shit's retarded.

Well some cultures did not mind homosexual acts. For instance I think Julius Caesar or some other roman guy, wrote that the celts were fine with it.
>>
>>46364122
Romans themselves were fine with it as long as you were giving the shaft and not taking it. Masculine dominant double standard, as long as you were doing the fucking that's alpha as fuck lmao. Taking the dick or sucking it is the 2nd most homo thing a dude can do though

The most homo? Eating a woman's pussy.

>>
>>46363960
Unless you're playing a historical setting, it's probably easier to just make your fantasy setting just progressive enough to keep any quests for social justice from occurring. Like some people may not be too fond of of gay people, but they ain't dumb enough to piss off the god(ess) of love, who controls or at the very least has a say in nearly every church that does weddings on the plane, and has paladins and clerics that can basically fire beams powered by love and everyone knows that love is the most potent power in fiction.
>>
>>46364192
Romans had a view similar to the Greeks. It was okay to fuck cute little fuccbois.
So long as you were the pitcher, as it were.
Having homosexual relations with older men, was looked down upon. Unless you were one of the cute fuccbois.
>>
>>46364106
That's not even the important reason, if we're talking about gay marriage specifically.
The concept of sexual orientation as this innate immutable aspect of your identity that dictates your actions, as opposed to a temporary description of your actions, is less than 200 years old. I'm not saying it's untrue, but in ancient Greece for instance there were rules about gay sex, who you could fuck and how, and most of the men who did it weren't actually gay.
So it's not unusual for a fantasy setting drawing inspiration from history to have no concept of "that guy is gay", he just does gay things. Asking for gay marriage in such a culture wouldn't be seen as evil, it would be seen as absurd, like you're putting random words together due to brain damage!

I'll agree to this if it's a fully decked out character that purposefully forgoes wearing armor. However, I do love the aesthetic of a scrappy young fighter who has little more than a few copper to his name that has to make due with a random assortment of asymmetric misized bits of metal strapped to himself that he's scavenged from the handful of fights he's witnessed.

To start, not all adventurers can afford a suit of plate.

If I was a low-wage sword and shield adventurer, I'd definitely want more than just a sleeve of chain on my swinging arm, because that's likely to fly up when I rear back for a slashing maneuver. All you need besides the arm plating is the gambeson or padding underneath and a gorget to attach the pauldron or spaulder to. I'd probably also invest in a gorget that has a bevor attached to it for added cheap neck protection.

You're a faggot for thinking this is Mary Sue. the only time it would be is if the player in question accentuates this style without having accurate knowledge on WHY he's wearing it like that, and it's your job to correct him if he's doing it wrong. For example, if he was toting in on his guarding arm to look cool, tell him he's wasting protection because his shield is supposed to do the protecting for that side. If your character is a savvy fighter, save his novice ass from getting his swinging arm lopped off by an ogrilon and teach him instead of OOC calling him a Mary Sue.

The only correct answer is when the character is an obvious vehicle of wish fulfillment who is in no way designed to work in harmony with other characters and share the spotlight. They're not a rounded character, they're an idealized fantasy - and it's important to note that this metric is relative to their setting.

A mary sue is not a trait, or a collection of traits. None of these trats guarantees that a character is a mary sue, and there is no trait that guarantees a character isn't one. Instead, the traits a mary sue has are a direct result of their player's personal tastes.

A mary sue is an expression of an attitude. It's a character who is nothing more than their player saying "It's all about me." It's about their impact on the setting, not which traits they have. What traits they have will vary based on their player's personal tastes and also the setting.

Mary sues are about standing out. They're about subverting the natural flow of attention around the table so they're always the one in scene. They're about getting attention for the player and what they value, or think, or want to do.

>>46363011

Man I've played two blind characters before and lemme tell you, that shit is a roleplaying goldmine up to the bitter end. I'm debating playing a third.
>>
>>46362972

I almost had a character join the group with this. I figured occasionally, as DM, NPC's would be talking to her and start swaying their look from eye to eye and start forgetting what they were talking about, only to bluntly ask what the fuck was going on with the player's eyes. It wouldn't happen all the time, but enough to remind her.

She never was able to make it, though.
>>
>>46369021
Well then you have to ask if a character can even be mary sue in the average TTRPG. The GM controls the world, and can do things to shut down the mary sue, where in most cases where the person in charge of a mary sue controls the world, the world bends to the will of the sue as needed.

I feel as if your description of a mary sue is the sort of mistaken ideas that a first-time player might come to the table with. He won't yet understand how the game is a social activity, and think along the lines of single player videogames where it was all about him. Being inexperienced, he'll just make a character strongly based off of himself, and try to be the leader (because why would he let someone else be the leader in his adventure)?
>>
>>46366917
Scars tend to be more on the white side then red.
>>
>>46365420

And your character has some form of motivation to make that choice despite inner conflict.

I was thinking of shit like in Force Awakens where Rey decides to not sell a droid for basically a month's supply of food when she has known nothing but to fend for herself on a shithole planet that doesn't careif she lives or dies.
>>
>>46371416
Maybe she has moral qualms - it's obvious the droid would be taken apart for scrap and salvagable parts. In that wasteland, a working droid would be beyond valuable, let alone the info it's carrying that Rey doesn't know about.

I think the movie had some plot holes and problems, but that at least is explainable.

If your character isn't a middle-agedd white man with short brown hair, brown eyes, brown clothes, no strong attachment to anything and doesn't go so much adventuring but rather mercenary for purely self-interested reasons, you're a /tg/ Mary-Sue.

Also, a fedora, a weeb, an edgelord, a SJW and a munchkin, all deep in the magical realm.
>>
>>46370798
>can do things to shut down the mary sue
Typically he doesn't.
>>
>>46362873
But anon, it makes sense for archers to only have one pauldron.
>>
>>46370798
If a Mary Sue - or ANY player or character - is ruining the game, the GM is partially to blame for having allowed it.
>>
>>46373947
Butthurt much? /v/ is over there

>Middle Aged
'round these parts you see all types. Child prodigies are often frowned upon but believable. Starting a level 1 D&D character? It's highly possible they'll be pretty young, though. And then Old Man Henderson is a /tg/ favorite

>White
Fuck, man, you think that shit matters when we've got elves and dwarves and space mutants?

>Male
Crossplaying can get awkward as hell real fast in the hands of an unskilled gamer who will play up gender as an issue. Since we're all elegan/tg/entelmen here, this means you'll see more male PCs as some of us are uncomfortable rolling up females and some more want to over think it. A few are period autists, and a few are sexists like tumblrinas such as yourself wish to believe all are.

>Muh Phenotype
I have never, not even once, seen anyone complain about an RPG character with a phenotype inside standard canon. Anime hair and heterochromia, sure, but nothing core human.

>Doesn't care about anything anymore
Do you even /tg/? Murderhobos aren't sues, but they're pretty looked down on.

>TLDR
Your test came back negative for sue, fedora, weeb, edgelord, munchkin, and magical realm but I'm afraid the SJW is terminal.

Thought so but figured I'd ask anyway.

To anyone who watches the show, would Xavier be a decent INT, low WIS kinda character since he spews shit advice but eventually solves whatever problem he caused? Also high CON because of all those beatdowns. In fact, I mostly hope to use him as a distraction in battle than a fighter or caster.
Besides he'd probably be some sort of lame diviner anyway.

It's a D&D thing. In 3e (Less so/not really in 5th, dunno about 4th because I recognized it for the shitstorm it was before buying any books), "Barbarian" is basically Hulk as a character class: Big, Green (Half-orc iconic at least), super-stronger when angry, and incapable of comprehending complex diction.

no you idiot, your shield arm is protected by a shield, so you need LESS protection for it.

Your weapon arm is the one that should be tougher because you are exposing far more in swinging a weapon.

Although whether the extra weight and encumbrance on your weapon arm would be worth it is up to debate.

>>
>>46377252
They come illiterate as default in 3e, while every other class has reading and writing standard as part of knowing a language.

If you want to be a choleric nobleman or classic sir lancelot, you can go barbarian for a lot of levels to get strength from rage, but you want to start in something that's not barbarian: a level or two of fighter for bonus feats is typical.

But part of me wonders if the lack of response to OP's bait is ignorance of historical armor from the "practical armor" wankers that show up in every fucking thread with armor. I couldn't find any better examples of this same idea of armoring one shoulder in a later historical period. Jousting armor heavily reinforced one shoulder compared to the other.

this.

this is exactly how they wore armor.. and it is very practical.. You do not want your thrusting arm to get fucked so you armor it while the other is tucked behind the shield. this was very common at the time.. and more efficient than even battle armor used in wars.. Some of you on here need to read a fucking book.
>>
>>46382024
you are stupid af.. one arm is armored because it peeks over the shield when thrusting the sword. This is very functional and allows for more agility. the shield covers half and the unarmored arm so in a sense it is armored. notice that the parts of the body that are exposed are armored such as shins, thrusting arm, head... like do you fucking think or just type?
>>
>>46384774
It's a matter of historical debate how much of gladiatorial combat was showmanship and how much was combat. Wounds were certainly given and lives lost, but was a realistic and practical display of martial prowess put on for the crowd or did it prove that something exaggerated and silly can still be injurious/lethal/at least somewhat protective? We don't have the time machines to find out.

That's why, in my settings, there are whole communities of non-evil or at the very least, tolerant evil, Drow.
If people want to do the whole Drizzits thing, they can, but they can't pull 'the only gay in the village' act without a handful of Drow telling them off for it.
>>
>>46367582

>>
>>46372873
That's similar to my Character a while ago.
She ran from the Underdark to save her skin after she pissed off a High Priestess but otherwise was still evil.
She ended up with a group of adventurers because they were willing to take her along and despite still being an evil Drow, didn't go out killing babies and burning down towns because that would be detrimental to her long term goal of not getting killed.

She often dreamed of heading back to the Underdark and at one point was even made an offer, kill the Sun Elf Cleric of the party and bring back her head, or even better, lure her down there to become a sacrifice, and she'd be forgiven for her prior actions.
She decided she'd much rather stay with people who looked out for her then head back to a world where even a friend would stab you in the back if it benifited them.
