Maybe they use their artillery in an unorthodox way. Like, firing poison gas shells or just using them point blank into charging enemies as giant field guns.

Arbites are known to make friends with the most loyal and fanatical gangs in hive cities to root out heresy and prevent worse crime gangs from appearing.
The imperial guard is known to give planets to particularly decorated imperial guard commanders(if they survive).

The links im struggling to tie together are

1. A siege regiment that specialises in guerrilla warfare.

2. Elite Gangers that are recruited to serve in the navy.

3. Gangers that join the navy as guerrilla siege specialists.

Surprise attacks on ships/planets. Blitzkrieg siege assaults
>2. Elite Gangers that are recruited to serve in the navy.
Could be pirates. Could be local spacer organizations, like crews or guilds. Could be any sort of group of people, as long as they're territorial and legally dubious
>3. Gangers that join the navy as guerrilla siege specialists.
Maybe their culture promotes that type of warfare?

On a side note:

What exactly defines Light/Medium/Heavy infantry in a modern or futuristic setting.

I get that light infantry are skirmishers typically lightly armed and armoured, used in recon and long range patrols.

Medium I assume would be typical infantry, usually motorised or mechanised.

Heavy infantry is what though? Storm troopers seem like their own thing, so is it the weaponry, armour, or typical tasks that define "Heavy" Infantry. (Or a combination)
>>
>>46361704
I misunderstood siege in that context, I was thinking more of the whole starve them out or mass artillery to blow down walls.

probably something like pic + heavy weapon emplacements. Large guns and lots of armor, basically
>>
>>46361863
Could be that too. Naval blockade of planets, destroying supply convoys to a world, using orbital bombardments to get the people to submit. That's if we want to have this as a force that takes worlds. Could be that they are anti-blockade force too, or are especially good at taking down the insanely large ships that 40k tends to have
>>
>>46361924
But that seems more like the Navy unit rather than the armsmen that would be protecting the vessel.

I do like the idea of an anti-blockade force though.
>>
>>46362039
They having ramming ships and board the main vessels, while the navy takes out the smaller ones? The main problem is getting close enough to do that
>>
>>46361782

In the modern (and thus contemporary) sense, what defines whether a unit is "light" or not actually has more to do with the weaponry they field. A light infantry unit has the men and their rifles and SAWs, plus a few light machine guns. That's the extent of the weaponry they can bring to bear. Usually, yes, they operate in more stealthy roles, or in terrain where heavy equipment cannot easily be transported.

"Medium" as a designation doesn't exist. Mechanized infantry fill a specific role, and that role is to act in support of armor, operating in areas where armor normally goes, and specifically, to bridge the gap in capability when the armor encounters terrain it can't easily handle (e.g., urban environs).

"Heavy" infantry also don't really exist. Heavy weapons, however, do, and any infantry unit will have access to them when the mission calls for it. Exactly how they employ them is also dependent on the mission. A light unit may find themselves manning a FOB for a time and will have to use their M2's for static defense, or they may mount them on some trucks in order to do presence patrolling.

TL;DR: the definition of infantry "weight" in this day and age doesn't really apply, as the infantry role is very fluid.
>>
>>46362198
Thanks, how would that apply to futuristic settings such as 40k though?
>>
>>46362256
Heay = Heavy bolters, heavy flamers, lots of armor
medium = cadians
Light = something like the praetorians, I guess
>>
>>46361863
>>46361924
Applying guerrilla warfare to that definition of siege warfare (Which is technically the actual definition of siege warfare), you'd be doing things like ambushing supply lines, sneaking into places and blowing up power lines/stations, and generally hitting anything that has to do with resources very hard and then running away.

Your regiment is basically an entire regiment of boarding troops that infiltrate enemy ships, go to ground, and then fuck with them.

>Your regiment is basically an entire regiment of boarding troops that infiltrate enemy ships, go to ground, and then fuck with them.

I like that a lot, a group that infiltrates and sabotages the critical components of a ship before escaping. The only trouble is I imagine that would be a lengthy endeavour and I don't know how they would go getting back to friendly forces considering most enemy vessels are alien or possessed of unspeakable evils.

Who said anything about them coming back? One regiment's worth of men are chump change compared to a full-on naval vessel. Men must die so that Man endures, after all. Besides, they're gangers; whose gonna miss them?

If the idea of a suicide regiment doesn't sit well, they could be stationed on a ship with a functioning teleportarium. I mean, if Rogue Traders can get them, I imagine the Navy has some too.
>>
>>46362838
>they're gangers; whose gonna miss them?
They prefer the term 'privateer'

Teleportarium could work
>>
>>46362198 >>46362198
>Thanks, how would that apply to futuristic settings such as 40k though?

Light Infantry would be units without vehicles or a lot of support and only fight with what they can carry i.e. flamers, meltas, rocket launchers, heavy stubbers. Tanith First, Elysians, Harkoni Warhawks, etc.

Heavy Infantry would be something along the lines of Cadians, Death Korps of Krieg, and any mechanized units. Basically any IG regiment that has a lot of heavy vehicles/support so they can hit hard and maintain their strength through the support that they have with/assigned to them.

Well. You got a bunch of gangers scrambling over the remains of a wrecked hive world. The best of the best (those not used for slave work and rebuilding and cleanup) kill each other for a job in the IG cause it means leaving a toxic lifeless rock. Every man's dream is to leave the planet behind so once they are on a ship they do their best to keep the Navy happy. As long as their campaign gets them further away from their homeworld they are happy. They don't carry heavy armor or weapons and are used to stealth warfare cause it's a lot easier to murder somebody in his sleep when you don't cause a landsline of rubble in the ruins you are forced to live in.
Being a Penal Legion is enough for the Sisters to hate them, but on top of that there was a shrine in the worlds capital with a sacred artifact important to one of the sister's orders. Now the sisters think the people of X failed to protect what was most important about the world, while the Xers think the sisters are some holier than thou posers that are just looking for something to blame, cause they were busy crusading somewhere else.

Bam!
