Let's talk about drow and general dark elves.
Post pics of them, pics of their weapons, house items. links to their porn etc.

What aspects you prefer? How did they play out in your games.

Kinda diversrify them by giving them an array of skin pigment ranging from their usual gray to blue tints and purple tints. Hair can be white, black, or dyed.

Also not forced to be chaotic evil or any kond of evil.
Only as matriarchy as America is patriarchy right now in most societies. Might be different depending how far you go down below.

Some mixed blood settlements with whatever the dark dwarves and humans race names are.

Little to no lolith

Our GM had them as mysterious as in we had no idea what the hell they were when we encountered one and we only noticed she wasn't a normal elf from a distance because someone rolled a high spot check. She almost convinced us IC that she was just another elf affected by some magical shenanigan and that she needed help. Luckily another player discovered an attempt to screw us over before she could fuck anything up. He took her ear as a trophy because it was a different color. Kind of an overlooked aspect that makes them interesting from a narrative standpoint if the campaign isn't focused on them and they're only found in certain areas of the setting.

In 3rd and 3.5, you could take a 1st level feat to get rid of it.

In Pathfinder, you can trade Darkvision and Daylight Sensitivity for Low Light Vision.

Drow males are pretty much glorified slaves, if better treated "house slaves" (compared to the slaves that Drow take from other races). They experience greater freedoms in Drow society than other races would, but at the end of the day they are still considered lesser among said society. That doesn't mean that they can't rise to illustrious ranks and have extravagant careers. They just probably won't unless they are very clever.
>>
>>46365284
Whats with all this about Drow, or Dark Elves being an uberly oppressive matriarchal society where women are top dog and men are the shit-tier grunts?
>>
>>46365426
Drow seek to emulate their goddess, Lolth in all things. Her cruelty, her wrath, her chaos, and her spider-like characteristics. Spiders are traditionally seen as feminine in various cultures and folklore throughout the ages for their affinity for home-making and their popular depictions of eating males alive. Furthermore, the way spiders prey on and eat each other is also carried over into their societal values. Also, Lolth is genuinely bug-fucking nuts and actively sticks her claws in everyday Drow business to keep them on their toes and to keep herself relevant. Lolth would probably take over the world if she would just stop torturing her children for a few hundred years.

Drow are a thorny subject for me. On the one hand, evil black feminists who live underground and worship spiders is a hilariously stupid concept for a race. Especially the black skin, which always seemed like a peculiar feature, even with (or rather, especially with) the curse backstory. Plus, so much about Lloth and the whole drow spirituality thing seemed backwards.
On the other hand, sexy black femdom elves. I can appreciate that, and it's the magical realm of preference for a lot of players. Plus, I like the feudal society stuff, and I'm interested in a lot of the drow arcana stuff, even if it seems horribly mangled in practice.

In the past I've had two main settings. One, where I do most of my DMing, the drow basically never show up, but on the rare occasion they do, they're basically maggot elves. Totally transparent skin and hair, a lot of obsession with bugs. This was years before Skyrim, but the Falmer are just about dead on to that setting's Drow. And if players want to play a dark skinned elf with white hair, well, they'll just have to be from Not-Africa, and get some dye or something.
In the other setting, which is more for Erogaming and just messing around, they're straight up regular drow, except with a bit of the lore sorta reversed. Lloth, in this setting, pulled the Svartalfar down into the underdark with her, replaced the melanin in their skin with chittin to make them more like her (and, as a side benefit, give them Spell Resistance), and gifts her most devoted champions with the transformation into a Drider, rather than having it be a punishment.

My next setting is going to sorta combine the two. The Drow are basically mole people who were abandoned by their gods when magic stopped working, then started worshiping a particularly large and long-lived spider beast, and when magic returned, the accumulated belief had some wonky effects. Now, the faithful can end up like classic drow, but the disbelievers are more like falmer.

>>
>>46369004
Damn straight.

In most fluff, Driders are Drow who were punished by Lloth for their sins by forcing them to transform into really cool spider-people with lots of interesting powers and abilities.

A player came to me and asked if her drow could become a drider, and I realized I needed to reverse the whole concept, make it a merit based thing. She had a quest she needed to undertake to corrupt or destroy surface elves, with the final reward being driderhood, but the game fell apart before she could get very far into it.

Shit artists are beholden to their fan's tastes. They have to pander to be appreciated.
Skilled artists will be appreciated for the quality of their work regardless of its content, so their personal taste outweighs that of their fans. Sometimes, their taste is shit.

Basically shit artists fill niches, good artists make their own.

I'm apparently a hipster, so I love the Forgotten Realms aspects of drow most people forget.

Such as the fact that drow have a somewhat further evolved sense of touch, leading to one of the ultimate luxuries of drow society being to give or receive long sensual massages.

That the drow obsession with beauty means many drow artists focus in sculpture, or some sort of craft, always going for the most beautiful of designs. Though this obsession is also why drow enjoy showing off their bodies when they can, and why deformed kids are often killed shortly after birth.

Then you have shit like how despite the fact the priestesses hate sharing power with the merchant houses and their wizards, the common drow is still highly fascinated with magic and enjoys seeing new and flashy displays of it. This is in part because unlike many places in the realms, Drow actually have mandatory schooling for ten-years of your life, where you learn the arcane, the divine, and the martial, while also learning to read proper texts, and the braille that drow use.

That last bit also being why drow communities tend to have big yearly celebrations to celebrate a new graduating class. There are other drow celebrations of course, like the drow coming of age usually involves the young drow getting to venture to the surface with a teacher, where the teacher picks for them a worthy target (usually a humanoid of decent capabilities) and the young drow must kill them. This is in part to make sure the drow doesn't feel weird when they (among the society's adults) are called upon for a "grand revel" which usually means a lot of looting, pillaging, and raping of a surface town that didn't know it was coming.
>>
>>46365637
Of course, this is assuming that Drow society could function without the constant meddling of their deity.

>Especially the black skin, which always seemed like a peculiar feature, even with (or rather, especially with) the curse backstory

It's just a nod toward svartálfar/dökkálfar, who were described as having skin like night/coal/pitch/other black things. How legit those stories are in the canon of Norse folklore is questionable at times, but they're where the black skin thing comes from.

Do they? Drow tech gets retconned every edition. Assuming D&D
AD&D had them making adamantine prosthetics that worked more like sci-fi style cybernetics, with implied magic power arms that could be worn over one's regular arms for feats of strength such as rending the armor right off of someone.
D&D3e removed that and said they can work rubber and rumors abound about them making guns
D&D4e quietly removed all of that
D&D5e who the fuck knows?

They're alchemical reserves. A drow implant can old any number of doses of poison or potion, though particularly arcana-aligned drow can have something implanted that gives them an additional spell slot. The price is that they can no longer naturally give milk, but that's what they have wetnurses for.

A particularly perverse drow matron could have a portable hole implanted, so that large items could be kept in her breasts.

I'll always wonder why they gave him the drow aesthetic. I mean, they're the same company that makes D&D, so they must have known what they were doing.

That doesn't make sense though. If we remove the curse entirely, there are still good reasons why black skin would evolve. The Underdark has a good amount of light in it, from glowing flora and magic. The dark skin doesn't have to be about melanin, it can be about natural camouflage and melting into the shadows when light is present. It can also be because it's a fucking fantasy setting
>>
>>46373423
Yes.

There have actually been a lot of powerful drow males, they just have to have significant inborn advantages. Most drow noble houses aren't going to throw away a male child with innate magical talent unless doing so benefits them somehow. They need as many weapons against their competitors as possible.

The only dark elves in actual RL folklore have dark skin.

So that seems like a dumb rule.

It's not about what's logical scientifically. Drow are black because they're associated with darkness, that's it.

If you want a setting with elves that live underground and are super pale because of it, more power to you. I've done that before. But if you believe that default 'dark elves' should be pale because, I dunno, Warhammer elves did it that way or whatever, you're being a bit silly. Literally the first and only 'dark elves' in mythology have dark skin.

Are you implying the Svartalfar were supposed to have dark skin? Because that really doesn't seem to be the case, in Norse mythology the "svart" appears to be more metaphorical. Dwarfs in general weren't described as dark, so why would the synonymous Svartalfar be different? Aurgelmir didn't actually yell gravel, after all, and the dwarves (i.e. Svartalfar) weren't literally maggots in his corpse – though I suppose one could argue for paleness based upon that.

The Dökkalfar on the other hand were described as being black as pitch, though they appear far less than the Svartalfar in mythology. It's likely that the Dökkalfar were a much more recent concept, though, either influenced by the Christian angel/demon dichotomy or simply a corruption of the similar Svaltalfar.

The argument that the Dökkalfar were actually pale/grey/dusky goes back at least to Grimm (he was almost certainly wrong) – most of the confusion comes from Snorri Sturluson being a Christfag fuccboi anyway, which is why most people see the older Svartalfar as the prototypic dark elves. Either way, the 'original' and more common dark elves were not literally black, while the later and possibly corrupted (and only twice referenced) dark elves were literally black.

So you're both right and wrong. It really doesn't matter, though, because Drow=/=Norse alfar. They're a fantasy race, and explicitly dark skinned at that. "Dark elves" on the other hand can be either/or, it's up to you. You can make them pink mushroom people even, if you're a miserable snowflake hack. Being based on a concept doesn't mean it has to ape it 100%.

>pic related, your dark elves are clearly invalid because they don't look like ugly little trolls like they should
>>
>>46371166
>who were described as having skin like night/coal/pitch/other black things

This is actually up for much debate because those same lines can be interpreted that they're shadowy and dark, not actually black skinned.
>>
>>46373494
Most things in the underdark see with infravision though, and through unexplained means the drow know how to camouflage themselves from it.

In fact one of the old books said that some drow go through light-exposure training so that they can see with normal vision when in lit environments.

'Should' nothing.

They're a fictional race. They can be whatever you want. There's no wealth of pale skinned dark elves in fantasy literature to back up the idea that they should be pale - pretty much all dark elves, after all, are grey or jet black. Maybe this is simply because drow were introduced relatively early and became entrenched, spreading from D&D into other platforms, but... that's just how shit went, basically.

Druchii are probably the only prominent dark elves in fiction with pale skin. Unless you count the Melnibonéans they're partially based on... who are not elves.

Why they couldn't make it so:

>The Common Drider
A bestial creature with the upper half of a Drow, and lower part being a spider. Mindless, savage and dangerous, those are the Drows that failed at something big time and as punishment were turned into these things. Pretty much the equivalent of a attack dog.

>The True Drider
Physically just like the above, yet are larger and stronger, as well as retain their mind and personality. The lesser Driders recognize them and tend to flock to the True Driders as if they were some sort of Alpha Pack Leader. True Driders are much more rare than their more common brethren, for they are Drows that were turned as reward for their service and loyalty.

>The Priestess Drider
The rarest and most powerful Driders. Priestess Driders were once Priestesses of Lolth, but were given the ability to shapeshift from Drow to Drider and vice versa in the same vein as Lolth herself (minus a third form). These Driders also have greater magical affinity that, when combined with Drider physiology, makes them incredibly dangerous to even to most experienced and powerful adventurers.

>>46376452
Yeah, but the way Malus died...even Malekith had chills go down his spine.
>>
>>46376532
Because in the old lore, Lolth said the dark elven form is perfect, the spider is perfect, altering either is an abomination.

Despite later artists drawing Lolth as being like a drider, her "demon spider" form simply replaced the spider head with her own head, and was done mostly for the sake of communicating with the creature she was about to kill. Otherwise she was full spider or full drow.

So a drow who failed their teachings was cursed, their body put into endless pain, their genitalia obliterated, and a spider's body growing out of their lower half.
>>
>>46376532
If you're going to add humanoid parts to a spider, don't make it freaking beastial because it loses the whole point of it. You're better off with just a giant ass spider then.

Driders should be crafty, intelligent, spider-people. They're the idea of the black widow, waiting danger and sexual tension.

Two, you're not attracted to the spider bit, it's the sexy human part on top that's seductive. The slow, graceful movements, long legs, knowing you're in her grasp and she's toying with you with teasing sultry tones A Black Widow in regards to a femme fatale, sexual and dangerous.

I've always liked drow, or at least the concept of drow, elves with black skin underground with spiders and matriarchs and glowy shit. I'm a big fan of elven cultures or subtypes that don't attempt to go all Tolkien, and I like spiders, I like glowy shit, and way back when, having a female dominated (heh) society was cool and new to me.

I even used to be a fan Drizzt, mostly because I got into D&D young, and to a young teenager, he seemed super cool. Nowadays, when I read through the bits where he's being a pussy in Menzoberranzan I'm rooting for his family to kill him, but oh well.

Anyways, drow are one of the more fleshed out evil cultures in D&D, and, additionally, are one of the few that in the more "mainstream" D&D settings (to my mind Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms) have a mostly stable society (although IIRC, the Kingdom of Many Arrows is still kicking in 5th Ed Forgotten Realms).

Reminder.

According to one article in Dragon Magazine, they don't actually have a low birthrate. Normal elves don't have babies very often not because they have low fertility but because pregnancy and raising the child takes a lot of time and effort, and with their long lives there's little need to have large amounts of children. Drow, what's with them being a bunch of backstabbing assholes and all, need to breed more often to keep their numbers up, so they actually have pretty high birth rates.
Apparently Lolth has created incentives for drow to get pregnant by making them have multiple babies that will fight to death in the womb. Apparently this is very pleasurable for the pregnant drow. They even have a word for fetus-deathmatch-induced orgasm (chad-zak, I think). Meanwhile Lolth is pleased as this culls the weak before they're even born. I think there was also something about Lolth giving her priestesses blessings if they get themselves pregnant.

That doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about drow to dispute it.

>fetus-deathmatch-induced orgasm
Why do I have the sinking feeling this is a fetish somewhere?

I get my knowledge from reading the Drizzt origin books. The way Drow schooling works is they all go to an academy that is split into Martial, Arcane, and Divine sections. The women dabble in the martial and arcane just enough to know the basics of what they do and then get to go to priest school to learn about Lolth. All women worth talking about become priests. The men either spend most of their time in the martial school, with their last year or so being taught by journeyman mages on how to fight against magic, or they go to the magic section to learn the basics, become apprenticed to full-fledged wizards, and eventually become journeyman who teach the idiots with sticks how to not die right away.

That is for the nobility, I'm not sure what happens to the commoners. For some reason a book series about a noble family didn't really go into it much... It did hint that non-noble Drow women were shameless sluts, although as it was a House Matron thinking about them like that it could have been exaggerated.

It is a thing. The snake heads are animated and seem alive in that they will often hiss and snap when the wielder is agitated. They are the weapon of choice for a Drow Priestess, often used to poison the shit out of someone who pissed them off, or looked at them the wrong way, or has a dick, or disappointed them. I think it can be deadly if too much is used, but regardless it is horribly painful.

Time to learn how the group feels about rape. Also how do you know they're sexy? Sexy Drow means powerful Drow, so your group is fighting 3 high level Drow?

The other part of it was they became less than people. They were considered tools even more-so than commoners, weren't allowed to live in the city, and for all their potential value as combat units were somewhat considered cannon-fodder.

Remember, kids: it's only a betrayal of thought if they made you want to rape them.

As long as everyone's screaming, no one.

Are there any other civilizations that have a god so involved with them as the Drow and Lolth?
