Actual Elder Dragon nothighlander edition.

I'm going to go ahead and keep the chain alive by telling you to explain why white is the best color. Why white? Because that's the only non-puma, non-craterhoof color left.

How effective are decks like this:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/gahiji-warmongeringgroup-hug-1/
?

I want a change from what I've been playing, which are rakdos combo, big blue fatties, flying men, and reanimator.
This theme of warmongering seems like a lot of fun, but I'm not sure if a deck like this would just be stomped in practice.

Any recommendations?

I have a gahiji deck something like that and it does work better than one might immediately suspect. because you're mostly just doling out damage, rather than something much more substantial, like card advantage from Edric, the group hug-ish strat can play out. actively forcing opponents to attack whether they want to or not(avatar of slaughter and fumiko for example) and big enough effects that don't exempt you (the avatar, again) have a higher chance to blow up in your face, in my experience.

Hey /edhg/ I want your input, how do you feel about tribal decks?
>>
>>46356370
I want to make my zada mono goblins but keep seeing how Krenko would go so much smoother and faster
>>
>>46356370
Aesthetically pleasing, but boring. It's really nice to look at a deck and see the obvious overarching theme, but overall you're sacrificing too much by limiting yourself to a tribe, and the deckbuilding is a lot less involved since your options are extremely limited.

On the flip side, it's an easy way to build a playable deck without having to think too hard about it, and some tribes like elves do offer a variety of possible builds.
>>
>>46356370
cool enough, but my playgroup's forays into them failed to produce decks that were capable of winning without overextending, so back to goodstuff meta for us

SURVEY TIME

Which is your favorite god?
Mine is Erebos because fuck life gain and fuck yeah drawing cards.
>>
>>46358443
Kruphix or Keranos, both of their abilities are really cool
>>
>>46358443
I have lingering attachment to Thassa from her time in Standard. Face damage is always neat, scrying is a nice effect, and as a commander she both 1) comes down early, and 2) has a pleasant color identity
local meta also includes athreos, phenax, and xenagos, none of which i mind all that much
there used to be an erebos around here before that deck was consumed by the encroaching wave of Gx goodstuff
>>
>>46358443
Ephara is the one I built a commander deck around but I'd say Athreos is probably my favorite. It is extremely unassuming, enough so that you can expect it to survive the whole game if you play it T2 or T3, but its effect is nothing to scoff at and it really does add up over a long game. The politics are also great. There's a Sharuum player at the table, you ask literally anyone but him if you can get your Reclamation Sage back and you can be sure it's going back to your hand.

I have a soft spot for those cards that are just inoffensive enough that people don't bother answering them, but that can go on to win the game.
>>
>>46357900
Add more redundancy so you are assured to combo off, also add a win condition.

The win condition are my two infinite mana combos (palinchron+phantasmal image, argothian elder+maze of ith) with tasigur to find my beast within and reality shift to turn all my opponent's permanents into beasts then manifest their libraries. I'm running a good amounts of tutors to find either and control elements to get there. I just hate having dead cards such as freed from the real, or lousy cards such as pretty much any planeswalker.
>>
>>46358684
Agreed
I like Heliod even though his abilities are pretty underwhelming compared to the other gods.
My favorite is Thassa though, partly for the lore, and partly because I pulled her in a prize pack from the first ever FNM that I won at (I had probably gone to 20 or so FNMs before I finally came in first during theros block...I'm so bad at limited).

I wish they printed weapons for the multi-colored gods. For each weapon there's at least 2 people in my playgroup that run it, except for Heliod's Spear. I'm the only one that runs that.

I want you to tell me how you got that high.

Phenax
I have a [mostly] defender mill deck with him at the helm. I can switch out the commanders if I want, but I just like the idea of having a god card at the helm...

There are no official rules about sideboards, they're entirely within houserule territory.

I was thinking about that because once again, I heard someone complaining about Purphoros today. Fucking Purphoros, of all things, in a format with 40 life. That player has decks tuned to beat combo, aggro, stax, literally any strategy, but a goddamn BURN deck attacks him from his blind spot and he suddenly thinks it's unfair bullshit. His deck could very easily beat Purphoros every single time with minimal adjustments, but he won't do any of those adjustments, because maximizing his deck's efficiency in other, more common matchups is more important: he only cares about Purphoros to complain about it, not enough to counter it.

So I was thinking, what if sideboards were a thing? Would people still complain about Purphoros? Would they still complain about Hermit Druid or Boonweaver?

>>
>>46361075
I play limited and edh. Those are the only ways I play magic, because I'm not interested in learning metas and nabbing cards from 14 years ago just so I can play a deck that I want.

Limited keeps the pool to something I can understand, while EDH allows you to be slightly under par while not losing immediately, because of the multiplayer nature of the game.

On the other side, my store doesn't give enough time to properly even look a deck over before the rounds, mainly because the community is cheap and demanding so the store can't afford staying open that long, and there are guys who just happen to have obscene luck all of the time. It's a little dismaying when you look over a pack, everyone at your table opens and one guy says 'Woop, foil Chandra!', and you look at your pack and it's a Serpentine Spike or something.

I'm not saying draft is bad or even that I dislike it, but I prefer just being able to take my time with my own pool of cards that I know are mine right out of the gate.

As for actual feedback, I think things like Damnable Pact and Read the Bones could be replaced by creatures that effectively draw cards (like Grim Haruspex), or mana rocks are more mana is basically as good as drawing cards in Grenzo.
>>
>>46361408
I will usual prefer Sealed when I'm just having an evening of booze and Limited with friends. It's more relaxed overall. If I'm feeling competitive, then I'll favor Draft.

I would still like to try creating an EDH cube, if such a thing is even feasible.
>>

>>
>>46361664

I think I'd rather put lots of legendary creatures in the cube. Something like the legendary cube draft on MTGO, which I never tried but have looked at, and it seems like something like that could be used to build "limited" EDH decks.

Having a commander pack might lead to players locking themselves into a color combination or archetype too early, and the rest of the draft not letting them build something playable.
>>
>>46360626

Stupid question.

Same with the Kamigawa flip cards, this card can't be a commander due to it being a non-creature/legendary for its default card face, right?
>>
>>46361798
that is correct
>>
>>46361798

>>
>>46355635

White doesn't do any strategy on its own really well because card draw is necessary for every single strategy in edh pretty much

The main issue with white is that its good threats too rarely get to provide immediate value, so you're plopping a Kemba or Hero of Bladehold or Stonehewer Giant and just hoping you get to untap with it. Which you often won't. You just spent mana and a card for nothing.

In French, shooting blanks translates to "tirer à blanc", which is basically shooting white. We often use that expression to describe the action of dropping a white threat right before a wrath happens.

Those are workarounds, sure, but they don't fix the issue. Holding up protection means simultaneously lowering your deck's threat density and playing behind curve. Holding threats in hand is sensible but white's threats don't provide so much value or power that they can hold their own on any board.

White really gets a shit deal in EDH.
>>

I deeply regret attending a UC (which I'm doing now) over a JC.

Also I recently build Grixis control, a board wipe-heavy deck headed by Crosis the Purger, and its an absolute blast. You get to run damnation, languish, black sun's zenith, cyclonic rift, evacuate, anger of the gods, blasphemous act and obliterate. I guess I just love removing permanents.
>>
>>46364821
I haven't played EDH in weeks, I just like to complain about it here.
>>
>>46362554
>Ruination is considered a bully

Fuck that. You play a nonbasics heavy (or worse, nonbasics only) mana base and Ruination, Wave of Vitriol, and Blood Moon are the price you pay. I can understand why people don't like 'geddon or smokestack. I disagree, but I get it. But you made the choice to reach for the greedy-ass manabase, you get to live with it

It's like you didn't even read it. Funnily enough, Wave of Vitrol and From the Ashes aren't on the list.

>>46366202

It would be my goal to get Liliana's spectre on the banned list. Removing Reliquary Tower already makes my job that much easier.

Also, you have to make sure that the guy who only had one deck wins the pod so he can't play next week. You kill all but you and him asap, then purposefully play bad so that he wins. Chances are that it will drag for awhile, which is great for making people miserable.

Conversely, do the same thing by using Final Fortune. Kill 2 people and leave the guy with one deck alive. Oops ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm pretty much the same. If you know something's a combo, but don't actually know the combo, yet you're running it, then I'm going to let you eat shit.
But I've seen plenty of times people with things on the field that they didn't know could be used as locks or game-winning combos, so I'll actively tell them how they can win, even at my own demise.
>>
>>46366590
That only works if he is a dumbass.

If you sword the mikaeus in response to his first ping, the triskelion can ping itself two more times in response, and start comboing off again.
>>
>>46366850

Jam a lot of value creatures and solid re animation, throw in Pod, and both enchantments that make 1/1 & 0/1 sac to get 1 colourless mana, throw in good cards for EDH like Defense of The Heart, Lightning Greaves/Swifthoofboots and Accestisisium (spelling i cant do it) and you should be golden, once u have 4 xp counters or more u should just auto win from value recursion
>>
>>46372506
What enchantments do that?
>>
>>46372826
Awakening zone and from beyon.
>>
>>46371877

I meant in response to the last ping, so he has no more to remove you dummy
>>
>>46373294
You exile Mikeus in response to the reanimaton trigger. Trike comes back but they can no longer loop the combo. If you try to kill mike in response to a ping, they'll just kill you on the stack.
>>
>>46373294
>last ping

Then it's already too late.
>>
>>46373294
The way I and most players I know do it is
>Triskelion pings itself
>LET THE PING RESOLVE
>Triskelion then pings whatever it wants to kill
This way, there is no way you can exile Mikaeus or Trike without getting killed in response. If you do it in response to the first ping, Trike will just ping itself again.

You can however always exile Mikaeus in response to the Undying trigger, while Trike is in the graveyard. Stop being dumb and focus on doing that instead.
>>
>>46372506
Do you pronounce it Ass-eat-is-ism or A-set-uh-sism ?
>>
>>46373334

I don't think you understand the situation

They have no sac outlets in play, they have mike and trike

Trike is a 5/5 with 3 counters, it removes one to damage whoever, you let that resolve, now it's a 4/4 with 2 counters, it removes another counter, pinging itself, now it's a 3/3 with 1 counter and 1 damage marked. It removes the final counter targeting itself so it's a 2/2 with 1 damage and 1 damage on the stack targeting itself

You path to exile mike, he can't respond by removing any more counters so he's stuck, Mike is exiled and now trike is a 1/1 with 1 damage on it, it dies and does not come back because Mike is gone
>>
>>46373434
When the fuck
Trike is a 4/4 with 3 counters
>>
>>46373434
No you retard, you have it ping itself first twice.
>>
>>46373407

Oh I see what you're saying, yeah they can insure they have trike in play at the end by pinging trike twice first, then they can kill trike as a state based action by removing the last counter and then yes you'll have to exile mike with the undying on the stack m
>>
>>46373434
That works too. He could doomblade trike in response and still go off though. It's a play safer to try to kill mike while trike is off of the battlefield.
>>
>>46373434
It doesn't work the way you think it does.
>>
>>46373464

>>
>>46373464

>>
>>46373427
>A-set-uh-sism
This
>>
>>46373467

This guy is right, my situation only works against people who haven't seen what I tried before

Once they've seen how a path can leave you with neither trike nor mike, they will ping trike twice first, then you are forced to remove mike but leave them with trike
>>
>>46373497

The only thing in my scenario that "doesn't work that way" is that mike and trike player can play it differently, which I already admitted
>>
>>46373563
That's not the only thing that doesn't work. You had the Trike ping itself, acknowledged that it was now
>a 3/3 with 1 counter and 1 damage marked
and still went on to say that it had no more counters to remove in response the removal spell that came after that. If the Trike has 1 damage marked and it has no counters left to remove, then it's dead and on its way to the graveyard. So you either don't understand how it works, or you explained extremely poorly.
>>
>>46373608
Oh wait, Mike's anthem effect. Right. Then you just have Trike ping itself twice initially. It would be ridiculous for it to ping itself once, PING SOMETHING ELSE, then ping itself again. That's going out of your way to make your Trike vulnerable, you eliminate its toughness before anything else to make sure that the only thing keeping it alive are the counters. I have never, ever seen someone play Trike the way >>46373434 explains.
>>
>>46373498
>>46373507
Actually, i was forgetting that trike is 1/1
Most creatures that enter with counters (or at least the ones I use) are all 0/0
I don't run mike and trike, so I just assumed it was also 0/0
My bad, I've inadvertently becomes a shitposter today
>>
>>46373608

I guess i did explain it poorly

I meant that after its a 3/3 with 1 counter and 1 damage, assuming there's no sac outlet, the trike must remove the last counter becoming a 2/2 with 0 counter and 1 damage, targeting itself with that last counter remove. Before that damage resolves, you remove mikaeus

But again you're right, I've never played with the combo, I'm going off my experience playing vs my friend who runs the combo, and he must not have realized that you can ping trike first which stops my method of working and ensures that you at least get to keep your trike after its all said and done
>>
>>46373654

>i have never, ever seen some play trike that way
