So how much rage will there be when the Orks get nerfed?
>>
>>46348954
The patch hasn't even been applied yet but the rage would make Khorne proud.
>>
>>46348954
I predict moderate rage. The players that can adapt and continue to win will be even more smug.

On another note, what do people make of escorts? Initially I was fairly put off them but as the game has gone on I've started taking them in place of a light cruiser or 2 to gain some maneuverability and harass enemy carriers.
>>
>>46348996

Depends on the faction. For Orks I absolutely follow a strength in numbers approach where I may have one capital ship and the rest as escorts that can be sacrificed as needed.
>>
>>46349005
What about Imperials? Sufficiently upgraded sword/firestorm squadrons can seriously screw up the plans of a cruiser or even put the enemy on the defensive.
>>
>>46348996
3-4 escorts can easily take out stations in Breaktrought missions while your main fleet distracts theirs.
Otherwise you can get a few in other missions and "split" them from your main fleet to make the enemy chase the wrong one and hit their flank with your actual ships. The escorts will be fast enough to rejoin you and "close" him hitting them in the rear if he's playing like an ass
>>
>>46349005
Do you have problems with insubordination due to losing escorts?
>>
Looking for general tips on playing the game...

Does anon prefer to use action groups to actually group ships together? Or assign each ship to its own group for easy access? Or does anon prefer to click?

I set the preferred battle behaviour of each ship though I don't turn on the automatic behaviour toggle, should I? When is it best to carefully manoeuvre a ship without right clicking the enemy ship?

As soon as I identify a ship I switch on tactical cogitators and pick priorities and target systems, I used to go for engines but more recently I've been hitting reactors, what's best?
>>
>>46349153
That's often how I play, anyway. At the very least, your escorts can be a nice distraction.
>>
>>46349392
Personally I'm a micro maniac. I like to direct everything myself. I never use the auto targeting because I feel like I can do it better myself. I get the most enjoyment out of doing it like that anyway.
>>
>>46349392

Personally I give each cruiser and up their own group for easy access since micro is extremely important to get maximum effectiveness out of them.
Escorts are then tasked into groups of 3-4 and used as "shark packs" to harry, harass, and annoy.

Going for engines is usually best, everything else can be dealt with later but if you knock out their engines at the beginning of a fight then they are seriously crippled in almost all situations.
Gives IN more time to broadside, lets Chaos run in circles around them, and lets Orks chase them down more easily.

They really need to add different weapon effects for different types of weapons, even if it will only make the game more interesting. A plasma cannon battery should fire different shots than a regular macro cannon. Light/medium/heavy variants should have different effects as well.

>>
>>46353918
What escorts would you want them to add?
>>
>>46353918
Chances are the Space Marine one ought to help in that regard.

I mean, we've got the Battle-barge (B-B?) in the battleship slot, the strike cruiser (SCC?) for the cruiser slot (duh), and then as well as the rapid strike vessels they use, there's all the destroyers and frigates they have as well.

Hopefully they'll implement them.
>>
>>46353954
It's less about additional ships, and more about implementing stuff like squadrons, or escort specific skills.
>>
The Chaos torpedo Battleship seems utterly shite, am I wrong?
>>
>>46354078

I'd love for you to be able to name squadrons. You choose the squadron name, and as you take more and more escorts the game assigns them a suffix. <Squadron name> Primus, Secundus, Tercius etc
>>
>>46354078

What I said in here links to that.

I would love to see escorts being more than just fodder

This was why I was asking about warping escorts and before you say it yes I hate myself for getting involued with the forums but I had to say something
>>
>>46354238
Allowing squads to coordinate torpedo salvos would be great. Giving them some sort of escort mode to provide cover for larger ships would help as well.

>>
>>46357950

Well those are just add ons to IN and space marines, not necessarily their own lists.

>>46357968

Yeah nids desu
>>
>>46358006
yea it totally is. nids are probably hard to implement, dark eldar only have like 3 ships so they'd have to make more from scratch
admechs are basically IN but more advanced, and IQ/GK would have to be fleshed out a lot
>>
>>46358398
Nids would also be adding ANOTHER close combat assault faction.
>>
>>46358398

Well Inquisition/GK are literally three extra ships to put into the IN and Space Marine fleets. That's all they need to be.

Nid tentacles would have to have some different mechanics though

The Tau and Crons would be awesome.
A dark eldar expansion for the eldar would be pretty neat. Chaos space Marine would also be a good expansion. Nids would be amazing too.

>>
>>46358652

Yes they essentially have to micro their non hive ships otherwise they'll go off and do their own shit
>>
>>46358652
Yeah, maybe on the tabletop. They have to differentiate upgrades and skills more before they will be that different on the vidya
>>
Is it a waste of time to upgrade into lancers for Imperial?
>>
>>46358749
I imagine it will be a lot more hordey than orks with a multitude of escorts and cruisers frantically protecting a hive ship.

Don't know how you balance it with the progression system that is present atm. Maybe you Hive ship starts off small but you can grow it in size(moves up the weight classes at the cost of renown) until its a BB or you have like 3 slots so you can have 2 smaller ones if you want or something like that with all other ships being expendable. I would play the shit out of that.
>>
>>46358849
its good for Gothic and Mars in my experience

>>46358849
Lance upgrades are a must for the Gothic. Most other ships mix armaments a lot more so it depends on how you use them.

Playing data capture missions against Orks as the IN are a nightmare.

The big ships (which are always the ones that start with/grab the data) can soak up fire until the end of time without getting any crits hit, and can always out-pace my ships with the BRB.

What am I doing wrong, guys?
>>
>>46364204
As an ork player, I say just have fun and destroy as many ships as you can until the patch. It's really unfair at the moment, you can hope to outplay them with taunts and stasis fields, but it's unlikely with the shok attaks.

I usually just rush in, whether I'm holding the data or not, and duke it out with the guy. They are so focused on the data that their ships just melt away and their engines get destroyed

>>
>>46364290
Apparently Shok attacks can't hit through shields anymore.

The biggest thing now though is that taunt got a range nerf, so Orks can't just taunt spam the data carrier into oblivion as easily. A lot of Ork players like to bunch up their fleet at the start too, so slap the data onto a light cruiser and fly off into the sunset because the orks aren't going to catch a light cruiser with the speed upgrade, especially if it's chaos.
>>
>>46365906
>aren't going to catch a light cruiser with a speed upgrade
Says you.
And Shok attacks are gonna not steal data anymore, they should still be able to go through shields. I still think taunts are gonna be really effective if you lay your trap right, the best thing this patch will do is get rid of the skrub orks who win every match and think they are good.

for nids you could have them be escort only like the vanguard fleet list at low teirs. As they level up they get the smaller 10 hp 4 shield Hiveship as a BC, with their BB being the 14 hp 6 shield monstrosity you can do with the upgrades on the TT.
Instinctive behavior replaces insubordination, setting all their abilities too autocast and overriding their auto engage settings. All you can do is steer them around at that point (because losing all control would just be too unfun)

Bah, any Kaptain complaining about these completely justified rebalances ain't a real Ork.
Anyone who's played Orks in any 40k medium for an extended amount of time learns that you gotta roll with the punches, same as always.

Now whether or not this is too big of a swing in the other direction we shall see in time when the patch comes.
Not that most people will stop complaining anyway but whatever.

But the ship itself isnt entirely biological...just partly...Like a daemonic parasite living symbiotically with the vessel

Are escorts incapable of warp-jump in the fluff/the tabletop like in Armada? How many escorts can you deploy per cruiser?
>>
>>46369488
I doubt they have any. From what little fluff we have, it seems they were confined to their own planet (a gas giant with landmasses made from floating rocks; probably not the best place to built a spacecraft) before the Tau showed up and uplifted them.
>>
>>46369675
Warp jump as in capable of warp travel? Yes, everyone but the Tau's
Jump as in the Picard maneuvers you see in the game? No, fluffwise things like that is downright impossible and or suicidal.

As for how many, your average imperial cruiser costs around 180 pts with the average imperial escort ticking in at 35.
(light cruisers are between 90 and 120 normally)
>>
>>46369675
yeah escorts are warp capable.
On TT escorts are for the most part unlimited, it's just generally not a good idea too only take escorts.
>>
>>46369675
Nah, usually Escorts are capable of doing warp jumps on their own, and most factions can just bring as many escorts as they like and have the points for. System ships that can't leave their system are listed separately.

The one exception are Tau, who can't into warp travel properly. They need to bring in their escorts attached to gravitic hooks on their capital ships, which limits them to usually 2-3 escorts per cruiser or thereabouts.
>>
>>46369675
Most races escorts can warp. The Tau have some small escorts that are towed by their capital ships (I think they still have FTL drives, because even the Manta is supposed to have one, but they're too small to let the cross any but the shortest interstellar distances).

Non-warp capable Imperial ships tend to be orders of magnitude smaller than even the smallest escorts, as the warp drives are huge machines that thake up enormous amounts of space.
>>
>>46368206
I'm not sure how we can deal with chaos or Eldar forever dancing away with the taunt nerf.

Still orks neva lose, we just wants a good scrap like
>>
>>46369778
Stasis bombs, regular bombs, torpedoes, assault boats, lightning strikes (reminder that Eldar have no shields and can be LS'd at will), terrain, shock kannon, traktor kannon, etc.

The main thing is that no ship can fire backwards. So while those other factions can outrun you in a straight line, sooner or later they'll have to turn to be able to actually shoot at you (particularly Eldar, being short-ranged and forwards-firing). That's when you use all kinds of exploding things to constrain their movement and go right at them.
>>
>>46369778
In small point matches I imagine it will be an absolute bitch but I've found the map seems a lot smaller the more ships are present. I guess when using orks people will have to get good at boxing their opponents into the corner.
When playing chaos against orks at the moment I often find myself very nearly stuck in the corner as I'm trying to keep all of my ships out of range but also within the firing arcs. I'm pretty certain that against someone who was actively trying to push me into those corners I would be annihilated.
>>
>>46369778
I still think taunt will be an effective strategy, you'll jut have to push the big red button more. With upgraded engines and combustion, you'll catch up to Chaos in the long run, especially if you are constantly using area of denial torpedoes and bombs.

I know for a fact this works because I usually blow my taunts to make sure one ship stays dead and then I destroy the fleet before the cooldown ends.

Is Armada worth purchasing? Seeing as how the DLC will be included free of charge after the launch I don't really see a reason to take the risk of pre-purchasing into the beta (I got burned by Space Hulk and Warmachine: Tactics)

The game does look awesome though, and I haven't heard anything bad about it thus far.
>>
>>46370387
There's plenty bad, such as the atrocious spelling and grammar (because of French people), but ...

I'm having a blast, and there's a great attention to details. The voice acting from what I've seen so far is good and very atmospheric, and it hits my personal spot.
I do not regret buying it, even though it still needs work until it comes out in late April.

Of course I wish for a few more features, but so far I'm impressed.
>>
>>46370387
It's buggy (beta), and like the other anon said the spelling, grammar needs another pass (the tooltips i particular can be hard to decipher), but the core game is pretty fun.
>>
>>46370364
>using stasis bombs as direct assault weapons

You're using them wrong. Cut off escape routes, force the enemy to maneuver and reveal himself, make him waste his micro warp jump, etc....
>>
>>46369018
I want one of those.
>>
>>46370364
Like all bombs as well as torpedoes, the point of it is not necessarily to actually hit the enemy with them (though you can engineer situations where that's unavoidable). The point is you put it somewhere, and suddenly there's a pretty huge area that the enemy can't go into, which is obviously pretty great to have when trying to catch up with a faster enemy.

Say you're up against Chaos and you're currently crossing their T, trying to get closer. You put a bomb and/or some torpedoes in their current path, and set a stasis bomb on their far side. In that situation their only options are to either burn retros, to take the hit, or to turn towards you to evade, any of which works out in your favour.
>>
>>46371417
>Say you're up against Chaos and you're currently crossing their T,
Whoops, that was supposed to read "they're crossing your T". As in, they're in front of you, you off to their broadside.

I took a comparably long break from the game and only saw yesterday we had Orkz now.

I played them.

Holy shit they're so much fun, at least in AI skirmishes. Spamming boarding torpedoes and boarding actions, then ramming the motherfuckers to the depth of the Warp and back is so absurdly satisfying. I actually managed to ram a highly damaged ship into an asteroid field and I think they were even trying to teleport. I nearly came from the experience of seeing a ship trying to escape then being hurled into certain death.

They voice acting on "Orkz is best" always gets me, as well. He says it with such a certainty that it goes into the complete opposite of the typical comic OVEREXCITEMENT that the orkz usually have that it's even more funny.

Hey guys, anyone looked at the achievements on the steam page?

"Purge the Unclean: Get rid of the heresy in a most definitive manner", "Burn the Heretic: Right your wrongs", "Fighting the Death Guard: Destroy the Terminus Est", "Herald of Pleasure: Destroy the Torment", "Hoarder: Do not let the enemy acquire the Artifacts" and finally "Machine Spirit: Win an alliance mission with the Adeptus Mechanicus".

What do you think of that, then?
>>
>>46373061
The last one ties in with that interview where they said the SP campaign would have you fighting cooperative battles together with Marines and Mechanicus. I guess if the mechanicus gets their own ships, that might also make them a contender with that additional free faction they've promised to make up for the delayed release.
>>
>>46373246
I really don't mind giving these guys my money. That's pretty rare at this point.
>>
>>46371417
Using stasis bombs against Chaos Isn't really the best way of going about things unless you're able to dump plasma bombs on the ship once it hits stasis.

Chaos can usually turn having ships stasis'd into a good thing, to the point where using stasis bombs on their own ships is frequently a viable tactic. On top of that, stasis bombs work so well with Chaos that unless proven otherwise, you should assume that any given fleet can out-stasis bomb you if you try something like that.
>>
>>46373284

Buy the game twice then. Lord knows, this is a niche title, they need it.
>>
>>46373374
>Chaos can usually turn having ships stasis'd into a good thing

You're kinda gonna have to elaborate on that. Besides, having Ork ships managing to close in on you will generally outweigh whatever advantage you might get out of it.
>>
>>46373246
If I had to guess, I'd say Mechanicus ships are just going to be Imperial Navy ships with the Adeptus Mechanicus favour on all of them.

>The rest of the chaos fleet can fire through the stasis at whatever is muckin about waiting for stasis to drop
>Unless the ship got caught on the edge of the stasis bomb, a chaos ship can out maneuver an Ork ship HARD with even a small amount of space between them
>Chaos fleets usually have at least one ship with ordinance bays if torpedoes are presenting an actual threat to the ship
>Ships are more often then not safe while stasis is still up unless the opponent is Chaos
>To add to the above points, Chaos fleets should be tripping over all the stasis bombs they have, and can reapply stasis to their own ship if enemy ships are focusing on it
>Not a universal issue, but Chaos ships can have ridiculous boarding resistance if they want to. If the fleet has any, they will be trying to ensure these are the ships playing stasis tag with you.

Chaos fleets can make trying to take advantage of ships of theirs in stasis a bad idea. Of course, I'm not saying Chaos is the one true master of the stasis and you should never try to use any against them, but it is worth noting that Chaos more then other factions can end up being the ones taking advantage of you when you use stasis bombs.

Never played that (yet another thing on the list that makes me wonder if I have a place with the gamers of yesteryear), though I heard someone mention it a few threads ago.

Said something about it having all three dimensions?
>>
>>46378403

Yeah, Homeworld has vertical movement but people hardly ever used it in multiplayer to a really great extent. The main reason you'd actually go up or down was for collecting resources on the map, not for any grand strategy.

It mostly just extended time-to-kill. You'd travel up, move across the map, then travel down to brilliantly attack your enemy! Except because the game is so slow-paced, it took forever to get there and now your enemy has out-competed you in the arms race.

Not worth it in Homeworld, to be honest, and verticality would contribute next to nothing to BFG, since BFG is all about broadsides.
>>
>>46378661

Oh and I can't forget ramming. BFG is about broadsides and ramming.
>>
>>46378680
I pulled off a good one of those against an Ork ship yesterday. He was trying to ram a weapons platform, but I did a micro-warp jump to right in front of him, and just as my ship was about to jump, hit All Ahead Full.

Hit him right amidships at a perfect 90 degree angle. Shunted him out of the way of the platform, but barely did any damage to him at all.
>>
>>46378661

I should add, though, that vetical positioning in Homeworld was important with regards to ship formations (which don't exist in BFG: A). You could set up your escorts into sphere formations and have these floating murderballs that would destroy anything that came near them.

BFG already has positioning as an important gameplay element, but only on a 2D plane, because we're basically playing a Napoleonic Age of Sail game with a space skin applied to it.

If BFG was not a faithful RTS adaptation of a tabletop game, and say was instead a Fractured Space clone, then verticality would be a great tool to have, but it wouldn't be particularly faithful to the tabletop, which was the dev team's main goal.
>>
>>46378791

He'd probably already clicked Brace for Impact in preparation for his own ramming attack
>>
>>46378841
I've seen loads of people talking about how impressed they are by the vidya's gameplay and all that, and I'm curious sometimes as to how much of that is a result of just being based off of one of gee-dubs (in my experience) better rulesets.
>>
>>46378875
That'd explain it.
>>
>>46378925

I am completely and totally biased because of my history with BFG. I am not going to lie about that. But I've also been playing Homeworld since around the same time I started tabletop BFG, and I am very happy to keep the two gameplay styles very separate from each other.

If I try really hard to distance myself, then I'd have to admit the game probably doesn't have enough meat on its bones to satisfy every different RTS gamer out there. It is definitely satisfying to play, especially for RTS players who love micro. It just remains to be seen if the devs can polish up the last couple of quirks here and there, and in future support the game with more content.

I certainly wouldn't recommend this game to everyone. Just 40K fans, because it is probably the most enjoyable 40K game since Relic stopped making Dawn of War.
>>

Do you know if armour works the same against ramming damage as other damage? So a side ram against an Imperial ship would have a 50% chance to do damage (30% if braced, assuming the brace bonus is simple additive).
>>
>>46381712
The damage calculation seems to be more complicated than that, taking ship class, speed, angle of impact, and armor into account.

Ramming seems to always do some damage, but it gets reduced by armor, instead of rolling to be negated entirely.

Cultists only affect your resistance to assault (getting lightning striked or boarded), doesn't improve your chances on the attack. You need Khorne/Space Marine favour or additional teleportorium for attack.

Man the tooltips suck for this game.

Obviously for the bigger carriers the gunnery crew can be good and bigger ships have more skills so slaves become really useful. I never both with the insubordination upgrade and I've never had too much trouble with insubordination.

Troop values are like armour, a percentage chance to block. In this case they block assault actions rather than attacks. All the assault upgrades (Khorne, SM, tellyportas etc.) just give you more rolls to beat the troop value.

Nurgle ships with high cultist crew levels are nearly impossible to board.

>hit the blue button to cancel it
>the prompt immediately changes to mutiny
>clicking like a motherfucker on that blue button now but nothing is happening and the opposing fleet is getting really fucking close
>after thirty seconds of of not making the slightest movement the ship is destroyed
>this then triggers the same to happen to another ship in and endless cycle.
I just lost a battlecruiser and two cruisers to this in one match

There's a bug that kicks in when you execute the captain to stop warp jumps, makes your ships stand there like lemons

>How would you advice I can expand my bits box for BFG and orks in particular . I looked thought the paste bin and found some good stuff but it was very IN/Chaos focused. Properly going to use a set of cheap proxy ships and then ork them up if they turn out to be good sizes
I'm still looking for other bits, I'll slap them in the next thread alonf with what I've found rummaging through the Evergreen Plastics catalogue.
One good one I've found is the 2e-era Imperial Servitor #2, with the long "jaw" arm, makes for great parts for an Ork escort. There's also the guy who did the Skrap-fleet; the ex multi-melta and rhino hatch/searchlight ones on the bottom here look really good.
