Werewolf drags out for fucking ever because every round is AT LEAST five minutes of "keep your eyes fucking closed until you're dead" and werewolves never agreeing on a target.

Thanks to this game I got to see two Jewish guys screaming "You're Hitler! No you're Hitler! No you're Hitler!" at eachother over and over again over an entire evening, so that was fun.

The best game of it's kind. Compared to Werewolf I gotta say... I always hated Werewolf. You play with 10 people and whoever gets killed during the first round has to sit around for like 45 minutes. What a garbage game. With Secret Hitler once players are being eliminated the game is already approaching the end so the eliminated players' down time is relatively short. 10 minutes tops.

Secret Hitler is the champ of this genre and it's not even close. We play it every weekend for 2-3 hours straight.

Board game design, heck pretty much all game design, is as much about iteration as innovation. Secret Hitler is an iteration on the core concept that's gone through Mafia/Werewolf, The Resistance and other similar games, but IMO? It's the best version.

The pacing of the game, the way you gain and share information and the implementation of the powers and sudden death win conditions does a huge amount to make it a fresh and enjoyable experience.

I'm the nerdier sort of board gamer. I love big complex eurogames and all that crap. But The Resistance was, previously, the game I played with non-gamer friends. Secret Hitler has now firmly replaced it.

Well, the thing behind Mafia/Werewolf is that it's just a party game you can play on the fly without anything required. When you die you go back to drinking and talking. It's kind of a mess mechanically and unfun if you're just playing it for the sake of playing it.

So the game is totally unsuitable if everyone who's present plays because the first one out has nobody to talk to since they are all still playing. I also don't like that you have to have a moderator and that you have to close your eyes all the time. It gets boring and annoying and pushes a game that's fun for 20-30 minutes to almost an hour.

I think the fact that getting closer to the fascists' objective unlocks abilities that even the Liberals might want to utilize is pretty clever.

I think they could have called it anything other than Secret Hitler, though. I get the audacious humor of the name, but it could have been something more eloquent, as the game isn't just about the Nazi party, it's about political inclarity and the temptation to do evil. I wonder what the game will be named if it's ever released in Europe.

The name is intimately tied to the mechanics. From the development process, they built it all from the theme of political maneuvering in the Weimar Republic. They're even including some background materials on the historical political situation in the game. It isn't just an edgy theme for the sake of it.

For instance, you still kill Nazis in Germany's Wolfenstein, and they talk about Nazis, but Swastikas are swapped for other symbols, usually the Wolfenstein logo or a Golden Eagle insignia.

When in doubt, investigate the guy who will be president next. You can either bury him or build trust with him.

Use the fact that someone seems shady and someone else passive to your advantage. Both can be accused of Hitlerism, or discarded as Hitler because it's too obvious.

A liberal playing quirky or casual can throw Hitler off. Just vote with the heart when bullets are involved.
