Taking down a space-shoggoth is no easy feat, though. FTL-capable vessels are rare as a result, and most of them are colossal carriers that ferry other ships to the edges of other star systems. Jumping too close to a gravity well is forbidden since The Incident.

The oldest ship in the shoggoth hunting fleet is the moby dick. It's been officially marked as destroyed more times than anyone can count, but is always in a salvageable enough state that it can be put back together and set back to work.
Black hole cannons (Creating buffer zones for Humanity), Artificial star generators and terraformers to keep the darkness away for another day
I predict with Humanity as its most advanced level, hedonism would be the new norm for its civilians.
And with cosmic horrors lurking around in the voids of space, this has the makings of a great story.

Humanity still hasn't learned good resource management, and has resorted to tearing apart whole planets for resources to feed it's ever growing populace and infrastructure, using enormous ships that literally tear planets to pieces and process each chunk over the course of a few years. They claim to only do this to barren worlds, but recently an ever increasing demand has led to "mistakes" being made.

Most of the civilian population lives in a post-scarcity economy where technology is advanced to such a degree that all production is automated, society formed by various humanoid races and artificial intelligences. Since the majority of its biological population can have virtually anything they want without the need to work, there is little need for laws or enforcement, and the society is semi-anarchist (there is government and bureaucracy but almost no enforcement and every position is voluntary).
Average life-span is around 400 years, 90% of their time is spend in leisure or creative arts, and hedonism. The player characters are the few who face the difficulty of giving meaning to their lives when intelligent machines can do almost anything better than the biological population can. In their search for purpose, they leave the trappings of their society to unfortunately be eaten/raped/brainfucked/enslaved by cosmic horrors (in other words, most of the setting takes place outside of the society and focus on the fringes of civilized space).
Human scientist asre trying to invent something that will replace the current FTL. So on the crust of the now melted and drained Europa they are building the first ever long range teleporter that will transport ships, and people to many other planets. But in it's current state it is not fit for transporting organic material

To manage the vast shoggoth-harvesting fleets of humanity, and the myriad of colonized space stations and worlds across the galaxy, all of mankind is ruled under the thumb of a benevolent superintelligent machine called the Interstellar Networked Computer, or INC.
INC was activated around the 23rd century, and has seen constant upgrades since then. It doesn't have god-like superpowers, but it can predict the future and manage the entire bureaucratic and logistical systems of humanity by itself.

Forerunners are asshats.
There is Forerunner stuff all across the universe in random locations.
There's at least fifty separate galaxy-spanning networks of jump portals made by different kinds of forerunners, with only some overlap.
About half of all planets has some kind of doomsday weapon, bioweapon, abandoned military outpost or other hidden.
About 275% of all planets and starts have guns and/or other types of weapons pointed at them. There's a gun on earth's moon that was apparently intended to be used against another type of forerunner that probably used to live in earth. Other weapons might be aimed from across the entire galaxy. The distance varies, depending on what kind of jackoffs built which weapon and hated which place, sometimes for purely religious reasons.
Basically, the universe is a fucking minefield, like a third-world country after a proxy war. Except that some of the mines are nuclear or trigger at distance or teleport you into the sun or only explode when it's a holiday or only during major celebrations or are bio-engineered tigers that only hunt communists.
Forerunners are almost never encountered live. The ones that are encountered, often just use thrall species, AI ambassadors or other proxies and tend to be cryptic.
Sometimes the portal systems re-align for apparently no reason and cut off entire planets from vital trade routes.
Occasionally a type of forerunner will barge in and demand rights for an AI species or call for the extermination of an individual or something. Or just kill them/teleport them into safe space.
