ITT: Worthless but pretty cards
>>
>worthless
If both of them are on the field when you summon Sanwitch, you get a 2.1k beater and you proc both Sangan and Witchy's effects. It's not a minus, which is decent for older fusions.
>>
>>46295704

Except both of its components are banned, so you can't make that card in any shape, way or form.
>>
>>46295756
>judging older cards by the standards of today
Only witchy is banned, and neither of them were banned when it was released.
>>
>>46295756
Why do they bother making cards, only to ban them?

>>
>>46295801
Because older cards have unintended interactions with newer ones.

It's why Yugioh uses Archetypes now and why other TCGs have set rotations, they don't have to worry about that when designing new cards.
>>
>>46295801
We don't intend to ban them obviously. Sometimes cards are OP, or more often, the community believes they're OP in ways that could not have been forseen

This is my favorite card. I used to actually have it when I was a kid but I lost it somewhere.
Now I only have this image I found on google.
>>
>>46295901
That's pretty, but hardly useless.
>>
>>46295801

Sometimes, when new cards are released, they have synergy with the old ones that break the game in half. Or create infinite/consistent first turn loops that kill your opponent in one go. Or are just too good compared to everything else.

It happens. They're getting better about it. Format hasn't been this good since early 5D's.

>>46295791

Except even back then, older cards were completely retarded. At what juncture do you think Pot of Greed was ever balanced? Or Raigeki? Or Change of Heart? Those were always super retarded. The only reason Raigeki got off the banlist is because almost everything these days has destruction prevention, and it's still a must that everyone runs.

As others have said, unforeseen interactions between old and new cards that are too powerful.

Though one thing none have addressed is planned obsolescence.
You have a certain generation of cards, then you release a new generation of cards. This new generation is better than the last, and to compete you have to buy the new generation. This is further compounded by banning/limiting the usefulness of the older generation, making them non-viable options.

Rinse and repeat for more money.

Yes. If a card with FLIP has its effect requiring it to remain on the field (like Brain Jacker or something similar) it needs to survive the battle that would cause it to flip face up. Something like Man-Eater Bug doesn't need to survive because it doesn't have to be on the field to activate.

That's literally the entire point. It's a source of Spell Counters.

Then they came out with a card that's very nearly a direct upgrade, Spell Power Grasp, which lets you put a Spell Counter on something, then search out another copy of itself.

But actual Spell Counter decks tend to run Toon Table of Contents instead, because it can search out another copy of itself which you can IMMEDIATELY play.

>>
>>46318798
I think using a card name can be done well in games where there are multiple cards with the same name (e.g. Pokemon, Star Wars), but in games like Yugioh it results in cards having effects that change their names.

And archetypes could easily be added as a seperate part of the card.

It's very mind numbing.
>>
>>46319062
There's a running joke amongst fans of the game that your ability to function at high level play is inversely proportional to your ability to comprehend things you've read. TCG judges routinely being retards that couldn't pass 4th Grade English doesn't help.

>>46320544
To be somewhat fair to the shit vanillas, some of them actually WERE playable at some point in time in Japan. When the game was first released there in 1999, Celtic Guardian was the strongest level 4 or lower monster in the game, and was only obtainable by preordering the Starter Box from a movie theater before its release and the best monster status slowly crept upwards until La Jinn was released in the second revision of the Starter Box (the one that the US Yugi and Kaiba starters were based on). There actually was a point when running a Level 5 monster with ~1700 attack if it was the only other thing you had besides Summoned Skull wasn't a horrible idea. That said, there is still no fucking excuse for Shapesnatch.

Let's not forget about Good Ol' Hoban, who hasn't been able to get in the top 32 of so much as a 5-man locals since the Djinn incident.

It seems that despite all of his bluster, he was only really good at cheating and mind games. Once people started being careful around him, he couldn't win shit.

I still find that incident hilarious, because even if Hoban was in the wrong, his opponent was a moron for trusting him.

Explain for those of us that don't follow tournaments.

Patrick Hoban was playing a mirror match, and he suggested to the opponent to side out a specific card in game 2 or 3, I forget which. Both players were running two copies of the card. The other player agreed, and when the game started, the first thing that Hoban did was send a copy of the card to the graveyard from the deck (it needs to be in the graveyard to activate) and then proceeded to use its effect. Turns out fatass had a third copy in his side deck, and sided it in while siding the other two out.

So while it was definitely a scummy as fuck move, he still did nothing actually wrong and his opponent was an idiot for trusting him. If I were his opponent, I'd have sided in my extra one and not sided out my original two at all.
>>

To be fair, generally in tournaments it's a big honor thing when both players agree to side out a card. Hoban didn't do anything against the official rules, but he shot up any trust that tournament players have amongst each other. If this fuck who routinely got top rankings can't be trusted, then what's the point in playing any degree of honestly? Lie and cheat your way to the top whenever you can and fuck everyone else.

>>46321023
During Nekroz format back in March 2015, Hoban and his opponent during some bigwig tournament agreed that the card Djinn Releaser of Rituals was too broken and they agreed to both side out their one copy from the deck between games. Hoban sided in a second Releaser he had in the side deck and used it to win the match. It was a dick move to say the least, even if the "it's too powerful we should side it out" argument is fairly dumb to begin with. If you feel hollow victories from a broken card, then don't play tournaments because that's like 90% of your matches.

Ah, when you said cheating and mind games you had me thinking he convinced an opponent a card worked differently than it actually did.
>>
>>46321178
Oh, he does that shit too.

Most "professional" YGO players are shitstains who gotta fight over them 4 year old iPad prizes.
>>
>>46321178
He's openly admitted to doing just that.
>I used Snatch Steal on my opponent and my opponent asks if using Forbidden Chalice will make the equip "fall off"
>I know that's bullshit and that it won't, but I know that the judge will force him to make the play if he wants the ruling, so I say "I dunno".
>He calls the judge, and sure enough, the judge tells him that he'll have to make the play if he wants the ruling.
>He does, and it fails. I win that game.
This isn't even paraphrasing that much. He does this shit all the time.

>Tourney players don't even know how the game works
That's just sad.

To be fair, even at regionals and YCSs, you still have low-tier shit that's barely above locals level for the first round or two.

Honestly, the low end play is leagues more interesting than the high level play, because you get to see silly shit like Chain Burn and Gladiator Beasts in 2016/2015 tournaments.

And then Jeff "let's take 2 anime casual archetypes and turn them into a meta deck" Jones shows up and makes Break Sword a $50 card.
>>
>>46321280
To be fair, more than a few of the cards have rules and errata text that warrants a doubletake.

>tfw not even Monarch players had outs to it at those tourneys

I went to my locals, and when a Burning Abyss shitter tried to get into a Break Sword thinking he could safely pop things, I simply dropped Caius through Escalation and got rid of all his Break Swords.

Why people even lost to Phantom Knights is beyond me.

TCGPlayer did an interview with Jeff Jones, and he said that Fog Blade and Twin Twister carried the shit out of the deck, but primarily cited "lack of knowledge" as the main reason he managed to get so many wins.

He won because nobody knew what the fuck they were playing against and how to deal with it.

>have friend who goes in blind with Satellarknights because they won Worlds
>he never played against Kozmos or Monarchs
>gets steamrolled
>now runs Raidraptors

Sasuga, Konami.

I want to make a spooky skeleton deck

>Going in blind with a deck that just won Worlds without checking on the current meta.
>Expecting to be anything but steamrolled.
>Now runs raidraptors
Your friend's got good taste but is a complete retard. Tell him to try Raidraptor Kaiju. At the locals level you can fuck people up because there really aren't any outs to Kaiju fucking up boards and then you either Remove Brainwashing or use it as fodder for your Rise Falcon or other ED Birds.

As someone who is getting into MtG as well, that makes sense.

It was basically just a gimmicky rogue deck that was decent but not amazing. MtG players are more used to this type of thing, whereas Yugimon players are more used to players sticking with a single specific archetype. Same reason why HAT was so good, nobody knew what the fuck was going on the first time they saw it.

Had this fucker reach 10k attack while playing against a deck for it in the android game.
I'm a casual, so I won a few times only, once was simply because he ran out of cards.
