Why would those allow science to progress to a point where normal men can threaten their lives?
In my own excuse of a story science DID actually advance that far once, and then it was forcefully reset by a temporary alliance of the most over-leveled creatures in that world. Rumors say they keep records of the lost knowledge, but there is no evidence and they certainly wouldn't tell anybody about it.
